Huma Qureshi turns to celebrated desi couturiers for turns on French Riviera

Having returned to the French Riviera for the 71st Cannes Film Festival yesterday, Huma Qureshi has chosen to make Indian designers’ names part of the whispers that fill the red carpet. After having sported a white Varun Bahl creation at the festival’s India Pavilion inauguration ceremony yesterday, Qureshi will slip into designs crafted by Manish Malhotra and Falguni & Shane Peacock for the upcoming events on the international shore. Celebrity stylist Mohit Rai, the man behind her Cannes turns tells mid-day that they were conscious in picking Indian names for her look.

“For several years, Indian artistes have been wearing international designers at the Cannes red carpet. The idea [this time] was to showcase Indian talent on international shores. The younger, cooler designers [in this case, the Indian designers when pitted against international labels] never make it to the Cannes,” he says.

For Huma Qureshi, the designs, he says, will be subtle. “We wanted to create beautiful looks, keeping in mind a muted palette. We chose to create [the look of] a strong, bold woman. Huma stands out, and we wanted her to express her individuality.” Qureshi will slip into a lavender Falguni & Shane Peacock creation for tomorrow’s proceedings. Falguni tells mid-day, “With Huma, we wanted to create a sharp look. We’ve designed a pewter suit with power shoulders and a cape.”

A Bandra birdie chirps about the curious case of casting Saqib Saleem for Race 3. Though there were several names tossed around, the actor was apparently selected thanks to sister Huma Qureshi’s proximity to the Khandaan.

She is a regular at Galaxy Apartments and at bashes hosted by Sallu and his sisters. The Mere Dad Ki Maruti (2013) actor is looking at being part of a top grosser and the Race franchise might give him the much-needed push.

Sonam Kapoor and Huma Qureshi have come out in support of designer Masaba Gupta, who has been trolled and been called names like ‘B*****d child’ or ‘illegitimate West Indian’ for supporting the ban on firecrackers. Masaba responded to the trolls by saying that she is a product of two legitimate personalities and is a proud Indo-Caribbean girl.

Masaba — the daughter of actress Neena Gupta and cricket legend Vivian Richards — on Wednesday, took to her Instagram to share an open letter. She wrote, “Recently, I re-tweeted in support of the firecracker ban by the Supreme Court and like every other issue in this country, big or small… The trolling and bashing began.”

“By calling me names like ‘B*****d child’ or ‘illegitimate West Indian’ only makes my chest swell with pride. I’m the illegitimate product of two of the most legitimate personalities you’ll find and I’ve made the best life, both personally and professionally… Out of which I am proud of,” she wrote.

The designer added that she is “immune” to this as she has been called these names since she was 10. “My legitimacy comes from the work I do and what my contribution to society has been. And you can try but you will not be able to raise a single finger on either of the two,” she added.

Masaba also says she is proud of her roots. “So, please if you must…go ahead and continue calling me these names if it makes you feel glorious. But know this… I am a proud Indo-Caribbean girl who doesn’t know how to shrink and crumble in shame of something you or your society cannot handle. It’s just in my ‘illegitimate’ genes,” she said.

Huma Qureshi is known to keep her distance from the media. Perhaps to avoid some unwanted, sticky questions.

So it came as a surprise to see her personally call media folk for the screening of Partition: 1947. When a film is releasing, stars do anything and everything.

As part of her audition for Gurinder Chadha’s film, Partition 1947, Huma Qureshi had to enact a scene of drying clothes. Huma made a video and sent it across to the filmmaker in London. Just one glimpse of Huma was enough for Chadha to cast her in the film.

Those who thought drying clothes was a mundane task, better know that it may sometimes also land you a film.
