As she kicks off 2018 with a hit, Sonam Kapoor on teaming up with Anil Kapoor after a decade in Bollywood and being in a ‘happy space’ professionally

“It has taken me 10 years to work with my father,” says Sonam Kapoor, overjoyed to be sharing screen space with Anil Kapoor in Shelly Chopra’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. The actor recalls watching him enact scenes when she would visit his film set as a child, never pausing to think that she would share the frame with him someday.

Having already shot for a week in Patiala, Sonam says of her father-cum-co-star, “I’m more excited than nervous to be working with him. We never interacted in a professional capacity, not even during the shoot of our productions Khoobsurat (2014) or Aisha (2010).”

Considering the years of experience Anil brings with him, one can’t help but wonder if he gives her advice after a shot or helps her better a scene. “My father is never critical of me. My mother is [critical], but not him. He thinks Rhea [Kapoor, sister] and I are the best, and loves the way we handle our work. Dads are usually like that with their daughters,” she smiles.

The opportunity to perform with her father aside, Sonam has much to cheer about — her latest outing, Pad Man, has set the cash registers ringing. But the actor says that success, to her, isn’t just about box-office numbers. “To me, it’s the satisfaction of a job well done. Not many people get to live their passion. I have that privilege and have never taken it for granted. It is an amazing experience to be someone else for the camera, to make someone else’s mistakes, and empathise with their joys and sorrows. I am in a happy space currently.”

She insists that her championing the cause of menstrual hygiene doesn’t end with the film’s release. “I’m grateful to the viewers for coming out in such numbers to watch a film based on a subject that is considered a taboo in India. It signifies that we are ready to talk about things that have not been easy to discuss for ages. That is what movies do. If my voice can bring attention to a cause, I will gladly use it.”

Sonam Kapoor and sister Rhea Kapoor set to launch collection inspired by the decade, under their clothing label

Sonam Kapoor with sister Rhea

With their previous collection featuring fun prints of stationery items and Phantom cigarettes, Sonam and Rhea Kapoor showed us that when it comes to fashion, quirky is cool. Now, the resident fashionistas of Bollywood are all set to bring back the magic of ’80s with their latest line under their high-street fashion label, Rheson. Known as ‘The 80’s Collection’, it will feature prints of elements that are reminiscent of the decade — from the now-forgotten walkman to board games like snakes and ladders.

“We are focusing on ’80s fashion as both Sonam and I were born during that time. It was a time in fashion that has been inspirational. We always saw our mother [Sunita Kapoor] dress in an incredibly cool way during those years,” says Rhea, pointing out how fashion icons then “took risks but had fun at the same time, with their clothes.”

A little over a year since they launched the label, the duo already paid homage to the ’90s with a ‘Nostalgic 90s’ collection. The new line, Rhea says, will be “more expressive”. “We have evening pieces, cocktail dresses and a lot more separates. We are playing with many bold colours this season.”

The Kapoor sisters launched the label with the idea of making fashion affordable. In an earlier interview to mid-day, Sonam had mentioned that she hopes that the brand makes a mark on a global scale. “We always have foreign brands coming here, but this is our own brand which is available on global platform. Our attitude has always been to be authentic and original, and our aim is to provide a high street fashion brand at an affordable price. It has just been more than a year since we launched the brand and the response has been phenomenal.”

Padman’s makers have said the film’s January 25 release date will not change amid speculation that Padmavati may hit theatres the same day

Putting all speculations to rest, the makers of Padman have said the film’s January 25 release date will not change. Speculations were rife that Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed Padmavati may hit theatres the same day. B-town is abuzz that Padmavati, which has been making headlines due to its plot line, is set to release on January 25 – the same day as the Akshay Kumar-starrer Padman. The producers of the film, however, said they have no clue about Padmavati release or the possible box-office clash between the two films.

“I am clueless what is happening… with clash. I have no idea about it. Even we have heard about it. All we know is Padman is releasing on January 25. Akshay announced it officially. Padmavati is a very important film. It’s a beautiful film and it should release soon. I am also looking forward to seeing it. It depends on Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions to decide on the date,” Prerna Arora, one of the producers of Padman, told PTI.

Asked if the makers will push the release date of Padman to avoid any potential box-office clash with the big-budget period drama, Prerna said, “We are coming on January 25.” Sources close to the team of Padman said no one from the team of Padmavati has had any talks about the possible clash. Some reports even suggest that Padmavati might come out on February 9.

Anushka Sharma’s next home production venture Pari and director Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, starring Kartik Aaryan, are slated to release on February 9. “I see no sense in clashing with a big film like ‘Padmavati’ and harming the best release my film can get. If ‘Padmavati’ comes on February 9 I will change the release date of my film,” Luv Ranjan told PTI.

“We are coming on February 9, we are waiting for the official announcement on ‘Padmavati’ release date, so till then we cannot comment,” said Prerna. Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions remained unavailable for comment regarding the speculation over the release date of Padmavati. The film, which was earlier scheduled to hit cinema houses on December 1, features Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the lead.

Recently, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decided to give the film a U/A certification along with some modifications and suggested change of the film’s title to ‘Padmavat’.

Seems that Bollywood is smitten with Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s wedding. Another report of celebrity couple getting married is coming our way. It’s none other than fashionistaSonam Kapoor‘s wedding with rumoured beau Anand Ahuja. The couple is likely to get hitched in coming summers.

Sonam and Anand will marry this summer in what is going to be a small, private wedding with 300 odd guests.Although the couple has warded off all rumours about getting married saying celebrity watchers were mistaking the family’s preparations for her cousin Mohit Marwah’s upcoming wedding for her own nuptials but they can barely hide it any longer,” informed a source to the publication.

Although Sonam has never been vocal about her personal life, her adorable Instagram posts with Anand Ahuja are proof enough about their relationship. In the wake of sexual harassment cases in West, Sonam Kapoor says similar discussions in India should be encouraged

Sonam Kapoor
Sonam Kapoor

Close on the heels of the mounting cases of sexual harassment reported against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, India awaits a wave that will expose the miscreants in Bollywood as well. Among the growing league of female actors cheering their kind to speak up against abuse meted out to them is Sonam Kapoor, who rejoices that today, social movements can cut continents and spread like wildfire.

“The world has become so small that if a movement starts, it’s like a [pack] of cards. It starts tumbling. It’s amazing that it’s not only in the West, but everywhere [that the effects of Weinstein’s sexual scandal were felt]. People are talking about things that are relevant, and [which] give them a sense of self,” the actor tells Elle magazine in an interview for its January issue.

That the “men in power have a tendency” to intimidate women, makes such expressions more important, says the actor. “[Men tend to] divide and rule [women]. It’s about pitting one woman against the other. The one thing that’s [resulting from such movements is] that women are standing together instead of against each other. Subconsciously, we have a tendency to compete with each other, because of the way we have [been brought up].”

In the wake of the ongoing discussion, actors have also vociferously spoken about other issues plaguing them. Among them, the most prominent ones to find voice are gender pay disparity, and ageism. Kapoor says she is optimistic that the discussions will translate into something constructive. “I’m optimistic about this dialogue about female empowerment, and people speaking up for what they deserve; whether it’s the way they have been treated at work [or] equal pay for equal opportunity. For all these years, especially in our part of the world, Asia and the Middle-East, women have not had much of a voice.”

With films like Neerja, and the upcoming Padman to her credit, the actor is certainly deviating from films that may at best be termed ‘masala flicks’. That her contemporaries are also encouraging such deviations is a good change, she opines. “I’m optimistic about the kind of films that are doing well in India. The audience is more intelligent than we give them credit for.”
