Mathura: With the Supreme Court asking the Centre to make its stand clear on the Leader of Opposition issue, BJP on Saturday said confrontation between judiciary and Parliament is not good for democracy and that the latter should be allowed to do some work independently.

“The Parliament runs on the basis of the Constitution as well as some set norms. However, few political parties take the issue to courts in its attempt to make it controversial. Parliament should be allowed to do some work independently,” national spokesman of BJP Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said here while talking to reporters today.

“Confrontation between judiciary and Parliament is not good for the sound health of democracy. Democracy will not be in peril if both are allowed to work independently,” he said.

“Congress is passing through a stage of dejection as it has not been allowed to sit in Opposition by the voters. It is upset as it is not getting any chance to commit corruption,” he alleged.

Attacking the SP government in Uttar Pradesh, Naqvi said there is “anarchy” in the state.

“Steep rise in crime rates shows that criminals and unsocial elements have taken over UP government,” he alleged.

Naqvi said BJP will contest the upcoming state elections on the issue of development.

“No government can be formed without the support of BJP in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

Bollywood Buzz, Happy New Year | August 16, 2014 at 10:15 am

abhishiek_srkShah Rukh Khan whose Happy New Year trailer has become the talking point among the junta and media, ever since it was launched yesterday, said his male co-stars in the film — Abhishek Bachchan, Vivaan Shah, Sonu Sood and Boman Irani — were all as different from one another as chalk and cheese. Even their work attitudes differed.

According to him, Boman was the cool one while Sonu was hardworking. As for the two star sons – Abhishek and Vivaan, SRK joked on how both the boys seemed distracted sometimes. “I thought I would sit them down and have a chat with them about getting serious,” said the Bollywood superstar.

“However, when I realised that both were sons of legends (Abhishek being Amitabh Bachchan’s son and Vivaan, Naseeruddin Shah’s son), meri bolti bandh ho gayi. Honestly, I could hardly lecture the sons of legends!” he jested. However, SRK is sure that if he makes a sequel to HNY, he will cast Abhishek and Vivaan in it.

Carolina: World number one Serena Williams stormed into the semi-finals with a 58-minute thrashing of Jelena Jankovic but men`s third seed Stan Wawrinka was stunned by Frenchman Julien Benneteau at the Western & Southern Open on Friday.

Williams, bidding for her first title at the Cincinnati, Ohio hardcourt tournament, romped to a 6-1 6-3 victory over her Serbian opponent.

The unseeded Benneteau, meanwhile, overcame Swiss world number four Wawrinka 1-6 6-1 6-2 to reach his first Masters semi-final.

Williams needed just 25 minutes to claim the first set against Jankovic. She fell behind 2-1 in the second with an early break, but won five of the next six games, closing out the match with back-to-back aces.

“She`s beaten me several times, so I knew today I just had to be focused and do the best I could,” Williams told reporters after claiming her 10th win in 14 matches against Jankovic.

“It didn`t seem fast,” Williams said. “I was just trying my best. And she played some great points. I was just trying to not make many errors, stay focused and do the best that I could.”

The top seed wound up with as many winners as unforced errors at 22-22 while the eighth-eeded Jankovic finished made five winners and 24 unforced errors.

Williams is bidding for a first title in six attempts at Cincinnati. The five previous failures are her second-most attempts at a WTA tournament without winning it. She has played the Sydney event six times without lifting the trophy.

Benneteau belted nine aces and broke serve four times in his 80-minute win as he earned his second victory over a top-10 opponent this year and became the first Frenchman in 14 years to advance to the Cincinnati semis.

Once world-ranked number 26, Benneteau lost the first set in 27 minutes. But he found a new head of steam and broke for a 2-0 lead in the second before claiming 12 of 15 games behind an impressive display of defence, winning 25 of 37 points and hitting 19 winners.

“It`s my best result in a Masters 1000,” Benneteau told reporters. “The Masters 1000 are very, very difficult tournaments . . . . It`s top 45 players in the world on every tournament at this level. You don`t have a lot of opportunities to make a very big result.”

He was joined in the semi-finals at the U.S. Open warm-up by Canadian fifth-seed Milos Raonic, who breezed to a 6-1 6-0 triumph over 15th seed Fabio Fognini of Italy in 57 minutes.

Aamir-naked-PKThe Supreme Court Thursday junked a petition seeking a stay on the screening of Aamir Khan starrer ‘pk’ for alleged obscene scenes and scenes with a potential to stir ill-will among people practising different faiths.

While throwing out the plea, the apex court said that the facets of religion should not be brought into art and entertainment.

“This is art and entertainment. Don’t bring religious facets in it. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Let others watch,” said an apex court bench of Chief Justice R.M. Lodha, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Rohinton Fali Narimam as the counsel for NGO All India Human Rights & Social Justice sought a ban on its screening in India and abroad.

The NGO had objected to two scenes relating to alleged semi-nude appearance of Aamir Khan, and a rickshaw puller, appearing like Lord Shiva, pulling a cycle rickshaw in which two burqa clad woman are seated.

The PIL said that “this is hurting religious sentiments of followers of Lord Shiva and it is a criminal offence punishable under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code (deliberate effort to outrage religious feelings).”

It contended that “the scene shall probably create a communal tension among the two major communities. It is surprising that the film censor board has permitted its exhibition in cinema halls likely next Tuesday.”

Asking the counsel Nafis Ahmad Siddiqui if the film has been through the Censor Board, Chief Justice Lodha said, “Others have a right to watch the movie. How is your legal and constitutional right affected.”

“India is a mature society. They know the difference between entertainment and other things,” Chief Justice Lodha said as counsel told the court that there was anguish throughout the country and it (the film) was spoiling youth.
To this, Chief Justice Lodha said, “It is an age of Internet. What will you hide? Youth are very smart these days.”
Taking a dig at the counsel pointing to generation gap, court asked him, “Why you are talking about your youth and mine. It is 50 year old.”

Colombo: India on Thursday thanked President Mahinda Rajapaksa for releasing all Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka’s custody as a goodwill gesture ahead of India’s Independence Day.

India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, YK Sinha, called on Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees to convey his gratitude.

“Mr Sinha expressed his appreciation for the President’s gesture to release Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody on the occasion of India’s Independence Day that is celebrated tomorrow,” Rajapaksa’s office said in a statement.

Sri Lanka has released 225 Indian fishermen since the Narendra Modi government took over in May this year.

A total of 93 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were still in Sri Lankan custody.

The fishermen issue continues to be a major irritant in the Indo-Lanka ties.

Last month, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wrote to Prime Minister Modi urging him to take immediate steps to get all 93 fishermen released along with 62 boats that were confiscated by the Sri Lankan navy.

New Delhi: Slamming Pakistan, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday came to the defence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he had said nothing wrong about proxy war emanating from Pakistan.

“I do not think what the Prime Minister has said in itself is inappropriate or wrong,” the former Union Minister of State for External Affairs said.

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused it of indulging in a proxy war against India, Pakistan today hit back by dubbing it as “baseless rhetoric” and said both countries should focus on resolving issues instead of engaging in blame game.

Stating that Pakistan is suffering because of terrorism within that country, Tharoor said that terrorism turns back and hits like a monster.

“I have seen the Pakistani response. We all understand that Pakistan has suffered and Pakistani civilians suffered from terrorism greatly from within that country… When you encourage, finance and nourish terrorism, it can turn back and hit you just as a monster escape the control of creators and that’s what happened in Pakistan,” he added.

Tharoor also attacked Pakistan of not taking action against some LeT members.

Mumbai: Director duo Sajid-Farhad, who is stepping into Sajid Khan’s shoes to direct “Housefull 3”, say the former has been trashed enough and it is time to let him be.

Ever since Sajid Khan’s latest directorial venture “Humshakals” hit the screens, not just the critics, but the film’s cast including Saif Ali Khan and Bipasha Basu, too panned him.

Sajid said that “it’s getting too much for Sajid Khan… it’s enough… just let him be now.”

“Everybody has to face downfall and the same goes for us as well. If he has given two flops, one should not forget the three hits that he had delivered.

“We should stop criticising Sajid and move on. It’s just a bad phase (for him), that’s it,” he added.

After a fruitful start with “Hey Babyy”, followed by successes like “Housefull” and “Housefull 2”, Sajid Khan had his first set back when his “Himmatwala” remake bombed and now the failure of “Humshakals” has added to his woes.

Sajid-Farhad, who directed Akshay Kumar starrer “Entertainment”, will direct “Housefull 3”, but say they have no issues with Sajid Khan.

Farhad said: “Just because we are directing ‘Housefull 3’ that doesn’t mean there is any tension between us. In fact, we got a call from (producer) Sajid Nadiadwala to direct the film. We will start shooting from early next year and since it’s a big brand, we will not take it for granted.”

“Housefull 3” will feature Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh among others.
