madhubala_Watching our favourite actors perform on-screen is one helluva experience. The perfect faces, the wide smiles and the beautiful expressions almost always leave us asking for more. And the deeper we delve into their lives, the more we appreciate their acting.

And more often than not, even as sadness colours their life off-screen, they go on performing perfectly well onscreen. One such irony-clad actor is none other than Madhubala, a heroine who was regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the world during her time and arguably, even in today’s time.

Madhubala, one of the most beloved romantic actor of the Indian film industry, was born on February 14th 1933, Valentine’s Day. Her life, however, was anything but a smooth sail. Her father, Ataullah Khan, who lost his job as a worker at the Imperial Tobacco Company in Peshawar, Pakistan, shifted to Bombay. The family was struggling to make ends meet and Ataullah would often take the young girl to film studios in search of work.

At a tender age of 9, Madhubala, then known as Mumtaz Begum, was signed in for the film Basant in 1942. It was only a matter of time that Madhubala shot to fame and her work in the 1949 film Mahal got her the success she rightfully deserved. She was just 16.

Now, picture this- it was 1954 when the gorgeous Madhubala was shooting for SS Vasan’s film Bahut Din Huwe and during the shooting, she vomited blood, reportedly, for the very first time. She resumed shooting soon after being treated and everybody presumed that she was perfectly alright until she fainted while shooting with Raj Kapoor for the 1957 film Chalack.

Sadly, the film never saw the light of the day.

As it turned out, she had a serious condition of cyanosis and poor oxygen perfusion, colloquially referred to as a “hole in the heart”. And it’s our collective loss that during that time, the medical community’s understanding of the condition was in its infancy and there was no available treatment.

Isn’t it ironical that the beautiful and charming leading heroine of Indian films, who was growing into a vibrant and serene actor, accumulating recognition around the world, was also slowly and simultaneously degenerating into a fragile being, who’s plight was only known to a few.

Her life compels me to recall a stanza from an Emily Dickinson poem:

“Hope” is the thing with feathersThat perches in the soulAnd sings the tune without the wordsAnd never stops at all.”

I believe, Madhubala’s feathers, regardless of her terminal ailment, still had some flight left in them. She resumed work after a month’s rest as opposed to three month’s prescribed to her after she fainted during the shooting of Chalack. Her hope and grit prevailed and she completed every project she signed on during the ten years it took to complete her last film, the classic Mughal-E- Azam.

On one hand, she was fighting for her life and doing justice to her art, and on the other, she was traversing and struggling with her personal life. Madhubala was engaged to the legendary actor Dilip Kumar. However, their relationship reportedly went south because Madhubala’s father wasn’t happy with it.

Madhubala left Dilip Sahab soon after and subsequently, married Kishore Kumar. Well, things were looking up for her but the doctors soon informed her that she won’t live for long. The tragedy only deepened with Kishore Kumar buying her a house in Mumbai, only to leave her alone.

It is tragic that Madhubala spent her last days in depression and loneliness. What was once the most beautiful face to ever grace the silver screen, full of freshness, vibrancy and youth, was left alone to perish. With a vivid palate of emotions, she could make us laugh with her work in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and move us to tears with her performance in Mughal-E-Azam.

Her talent mixed with her indomitable spirit motivated her to venture into direction with a film named Farz Aur Ishq. However, during the pre-production stage of the film, Madhubala succumbed to her illness on February 23rd, 1969, and passed away, leaving behind a timeless remembrance, full of beauty, grit and ‘feathers’.
I can almost hear her sing, ‘Kisi din ye tamaashaa muskuraakar hum bhi dekhenge,’ even today.

Not only this, she has also restricted Tiger from interacting with his female co-stars.

“This is Tiger’s first relationship and he’s crazy about Disha. She, on the other hand, keeps a tab on his moves. She has also told him that she doesn’t appreciate him liking another actress’ pictures on Instagram.”

Her strict rules and regulations for Tiger has left him with a very handful of friends.

salman-khan-arijit-singhTwo years after singer Arijit Singh hinted that owing to a discord with Salman Khan, the superstar got his version of “Jag Ghommeya” dropped from Sultan, to replace it with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice, there are reports that the actor has got the numero uno playback singer’s track replaced one more time from upcoming film, Welcome To New York.

Arijit, in a Facebook post in May 2016, revealed he had rubbed Salman the wrong way with his behaviour at an awards show, where the star was also present. The singer also apologised in the long post and requested Salman to “not remove the song that I sang for you in sultan. You want anyone else to sing this song, absolutely fine but keep a version at least. I have sung enough songs sir. But I want to retire with at least one song of you keeping in my library. Please do not take away this feeling.”

Salman, on his part, replied that the decision to use the track depended on the director and the producer of Sultan and people should not make a big deal out of the fact that it was Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, whose version was being used in the film’s final cut and not Arijit’s.

Today, fresh reports have emerged suggesting that in Sonakshi Sinha-Diljit Dosanjh starrer Welcome to New York, which has a special appearance of Salman in a song, Arijit’s voice has been dropped, with the reason being the Tiger Zinda Hai actor’s long-standing issue with the singer.

The film’s team is yet to give any official response on the rumour, but a source close to the movie refuted the report, while sharing with, “Salman sir hasn’t interfered with the project at all.”

Also starring Karan Johar and Riteish Deshmukh, Welcome to New York will arrive in theatres on February 23.

Salman_RamSometime ago IANS had reported that after Rani Mukerji backing out of appearing at Ram Kapoor’s show Comedy High School due ill-health, it was Salman Khan who was going to fill in her place. And well that did happen, as per reports in DNA, Salman recently visited the Comedy High School show set as a special guest.

The show is hosted by Ram Kapoor and will be going on air from tomorrow on Discovery JEET. While the makers decided to have Salman for the pilot episode, they also paid a huge price for the same suggest reports. As per what the source told DNA, despite being unwell Salman had a blast on the show and also performed a Karwa Chauth act on a song from Shah Rukh Khan’s DDLJ, in one take.

However, for a 4-hour shoot, Salman Khan charged the makers a whopping Rs 4 crores. “The makers paid the superstar Rs 4 crores and he completed the shoot in four hours,” a source from the show told the daily. Earlier, even Priyanka Chopra had made a demand similar to this. The actress had demanded Rs 5 crores for a 5-minute performance on Zee Cine awards.

While earlier reports were doing rounds that Rani dropped out last minute, the spokesperson from the channel denied the report by issuing a statement that said, “There has been speculation in the media that Rani dropped out at the last minute from the shoot of Comedy High School because of ill health and we replaced her with Salman Khan. This is to clarify that like a true professional, Rani informed us a day prior that she would not be able to make the shoot as her back injury needed some more time to heal. Salman Khan was always scheduled to shoot the launch episode of Comedy High School. We are delighted to hear that Rani is absolutely fine now and will be making an appearance on the show soon.”

Comedy High School is a light-hearted take on society, culture, education and current affairs through a classroom-based setup. It has theme-based episodes. The show’s cast includes Ram, Gopal Dutt, Paritosh Tripathi, Krishna Bhatt, Jasmeet Bhatia and Deepak Dutta. It begins on February 17.

Now, with a stalwart like Salman launching the show, we guess it is something surely to look forward to. Salman is currently in Bangkok shooting for Race 3 and also has another film Bharat coming up. He will also be soon returning to the TV with his game based reality show 10 Ka Dum.

Madhuri-DixitHaving taken things slow on the professional front over the last decade, this year sees Madhuri Dixit-Nene moving ahead with gusto. Apart from having a show based on her time in Denver, the actor is making her debut in Marathi cinema with Bucket List and turning producer with another Marathi project. She is also reuniting with Anil Kapoor and her favourite director Indra Kumar for Total Dhamaal, which also stars Ajay Devgn.

Point out how she has her plate full and she says, “I didn’t take up too much work earlier because my kids were young. My priority was my family then. It still is, but since my kids have grown up now, I decided to do more work.”

The mother of two, who has become the brand ambassador of Mortein, says that even now, she designs her shoot schedules in a manner that allows her time with her kids. “I work my schedule around them. I always make sure that I am at home on time, so I can be with them,” she says before adding, “Also, I have always agreed to do something only when I feel strongly about the project. That was the case with Total Dhamaal and Bucket List, so I agreed to do them.”

As an artiste who would juggle two to three shifts a day in the ’90s, Dixit is glad that shoots have become more organised now. Talking about the positive changes in the industry, she says, “The best part is that everything is ready when you reach the sets. From the costumes to make-up, it’s all so well-managed. This makes our work so easier.” However, she is quick to point out a change that she is yet to adapt to. “I find film promotions a little boring. In the past, we didn’t have to promote a movie so aggressively, but I guess it’s the need of the hour.”
