Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the 2018 union budget, where the Government is expected to try to woo rural voters and small businesses as the country heads to a season of elections

Kajol

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the 2018 union budget, where the Government is expected to try to woo rural voters and small businesses as the country heads to a season of elections. The entertainment industry too has some expectations from the budget, as they want the high taxes gone from the industry and want it to be ‘tax free’. Expressing her thoughts on the budget as an actor, actress Kajol said, ‘I ideally want the entertainment industry to be completely tax-free. But since that is not going to happen, I will leave this upto the government to do as they see best.’

Bollywood actress Richa Chadha also supports the ‘tax free’ comment and says that she is worried about the country’s economy going down. ‘As an actor, I want to say that as of now the entertainment tax is too high. People like me pay 33 percent tax and 15 percent GST, so I want something in return too. Amenities like Education, Electricity, Water and Health should be free. We can’t really be free till the time, we don’t give these basic amenities to everyone in that nation.’

She also said that such high taxes in the industry is killing cinema and it needs to be modified. Meanwhile, ace choreographer Terrence Lewis says that making entertainment industry ‘tax-free’ is not the right choice. ‘Entertainment industry is not a social service. We are doing for our own personal agenda. So, yes, taxes can be reduced but not fully diminished.’ This will be the last full-fledged budget of the Narendra Modi-led government and the first post the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Actress Manjari Fadnis, who believes she is one of the “best kept secrets of Bollywood”, says she does not know how to develop a professional network and that is affecting her career growth in the film industry

Manjari Fadnis

Actress Manjari Fadnis, who believes she is one of the “best kept secrets of Bollywood”, says she does not know how to develop a professional network and that is affecting her career growth in the film industry. She started her career in 2004 with the film “Rok Sako To Rok Lo” but found visibility with her performance in “Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na”. However, even after spending over a decade in Bollywood, she believes her potential has not been utilized enough.

“Since I started very young, I never knew how to market myself and in this industry that is important. I am not good at small talk or approaching directors by showing my interest to work with them. “I think that is why the growth in my career is very slow. But I think this is the time I gear up to grow,” Manjari told IANS in an interview. The actress added: “I always believed that my work will speak a volume. But it did not happen. I think I am one of the best kept secrets of Bollywood.”

In her latest movie “Nirdosh”, Manjari plays a vulnerable housewife in the Arbaaz Khan starrer. Since it is a suspense thriller, Manjari said it was quite emotionally draining to shoot some of the scenes, but she enjoyed the journey of the character. “This is the fourth film I am doing with Arbaaz Sir and our relationship has evolved with time. I am happy that even though I have no film background, the industry has accepted me and I am getting good work — whether it is my short film (‘The Cot’) or feature films.

“I am getting work based on my merit and that is a good thing.” Asked about her wish list of directors, Manjari said: “I so want to work with Rajkumar Hirani and Ashutosh Gowariker because I admire them not just as filmmakers, but also as human beings, they are wonderful.”

As reality drama India’s Next Superstar receives flak for allowing Angela Krislinzki as contestant, those involved say it’s ‘about making it big’

While it was meant to pave the way for better roles, a supporting act in the recently released 1921 has turned out to be a thorn for Angela Krislinzki. Cinephiles heading to watch the Vikram Bhatt venture, featuring Zareen Khan and Karan Kundra, were quick to notice Krislinzki’s familiar face. The Polish model, they realised, is also a participant on the reality show, India’s Next Superstar, supposedly judging “newcomers”. It is now learnt that Krislinzki has several gigs to her credit, with her debut dating to 2008.

Portals were quick to slam the talent hunt show for promoting an existing Bollywood artiste on a platform that was supposed to give “fresh faces” an opportunity. However, casting director Mukesh Chhabra, who apparently scouted for the participants across 20 cities following auditions, finds little merit in the criticism. Talking about the format of the show, judged by Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty, he says, “We have shortlisted people on talent showcased in auditions. Krislinzki was brought aboard after we found merit in her craft.”

Asserting that an artiste playing smaller roles has the authority to better her prospects in the industry, Chhabra adds, “The concept of the show is to launch people in lead roles, so I don’t see an issue here,” he says, his statements strongly contradicting that of Shetty, who had reportedly said that the show was indeed for “newcomers.” “I think the channel would be in a better position to answer this,” Chhabra says dismissingly. Krislinzki reiterated Chhabra’s claim, stating, “The show isn’t for debutantes alone. I don’t want to do small roles and will work hard to enter the big league. This is a brilliant platform, one that allows me to hone my skills.” Channel Star India refused to comment.

Who is Angela Krislinzki?
Polish-Indian model Krislinzki was seen in the first season of the reality show, MTV Splitsvilla. This was followed by turns in Telugu and Tamil cinema, where she was seen in item numbers and smaller roles. More recently, she featured in the acclaimed 2017 Telugu/Kannada film, Rogue. In the Bollywood film, 1921, Krislinzki appears as the antagonist.

In April last year, Krislinzki had also courted attention for her statements about Hrithik Roshan, who she featured with in at least two commercials. When she referred to him as a mentor friend, Roshan took to Twitter to question: “My dear lady, who are you and why are u lying (sic).” Krislinzki later apologised asserting that she merely implied he inspires her.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali breathes free as the Supreme Court clears release of the historical drama using the film Aarakshan as precedent; Bollywood veterans critique two-faced government

Deepika Padukone in Padmaavat

The Supreme Court this morning cleared Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial period drama, Padmaavat, by suspending the ban orders of six states – Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. A bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud considered the submission of the counsel of Viacom 18 and other producers of the film that the plea be heard urgently as the movie was set for all-India release on January 25.

The court said it is the duty of states to maintain law and order and that the creative content is an inseparable aspect of article 19 (1), freedom of speech and expression. CJI Dipak Misra said in his comments that the states can take a call in case violence erupts after release, but cannot preempt reaction or ban a film before release. The bench was hearing a writ petition filed by Agarwal Law Associates on behalf of Viacom 18 and Bhansali Productions, seeking the quashing of a ban on the release of the film.

The producers moved the top court through senior lawyer Harish Salve and advocate Mahesh Agarwal and submitted, in the petition, that the movie has undergone changes including in its title and the Ghoomar song as suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They cited the example of Prakash Jha’s controversial 2011 film, Aarakshan, which looked at caste reservation in education.

It was considered anti-Dalit and banned across several states, before the SC cleared its release. Using that as a precedent, the legal team argued that once the Censor Board has certified a movie, no state can ban it. Salve said, “If states are banning a film, then it [ban] is destroying [the] federal structure. It is a serious matter. If somebody has a problem, then he or she can approach the appellate tribunal for relief. [The] state can’t touch the content of a film.”

A source close to the production house told mid-day, “The Supreme Court has passed an order upholding the freedom of speech and directing the states to maintain law and order relying on Prakash Jha’s case of Aarakshan. This is another landmark case, where the Apex court has upheld freedom of speech and expression again, recognising that the state is duty bound to maintain law and order when the CBFC has certified a film. The principle laid down in the case of Aarakshan has been upheld.”

Hrithik RoshanHrithik Roshan

Patna based mathematician Anand Kumar says he is confident that actor Hrithik Roshan, who has been locked to reprise the genius’ story on screen, will be able to do full justice to the part.

There was speculation around the casting of the biopic of Kumar, who is the founder of educational programme Super 30. But producers have made it official that Hrithik has been signed to play the math genius.

“I have full faith in his capabilities,” Kumar said in a statement.

“I am very happy because he is the best choice for the role. I’ve seen his work and the kind of versatility and range that he exhibits as an actor is very strong. I am a rooted guy, so I feel some level of emotional quotient is required to live my life on screen. I have seen that in Hrithik — on and off screen,” he added.

The biopic, which is being helmed by Vikas Bahl, will showcase the life of the mathematician, who trains 30 deserving, economically backward students for IIT-JEE — the entrance exams of IIT — each year, with a commendable success rate.

“I can totally trust Vikas Bahl with my life’s story as I’m confident he will make a heartfelt film out of my story,” Kumar said.

Well, I think we all will have to scratch our brains to remember when was the last time we saw Aamir Khan attend an award show, that too, in public glare.

Yes, it happened! On Friday evening, the ‘Dangal’ star attended GQ Men Awards and was seen mingling with the energetic and charismatic Ranveer  Singh.

Dressed in tuxedos and suits, the men looked dapper.

Known for his crazy antics, Ranveer got the otherwise silent Aamir to be a part of his antics.

Ranveer clicked selfies with the ‘perfectionist’, while the latter flaunted his pierced nose, for which he endured so much pain.

At the award show, Aamir was bestowed with the award of ‘Creative Maverick,’ while Ranveer walked with the title of ‘Entertainer of The Year.’

Overwhelmed with joy, in one of the frame Ranveer was seen planting a kiss on Aamir’s face.

Others, who walked with various other titles, were Anushka Sharma (Woman of The Year), Rajkummar Rao (Actor of The Year), Konkona Sensharma (Excellence in Direction and Acting), Rahul Bose (Agent of Social Change), Sridevi (Excellence in Acting), Karan Johar (Producer of the Year), Irrfan Khan (Outstanding Achievement), and Sidharth Malhotra (Most Stylish Man).

While receiving the award, Ranveer congratulated Sidharth Malhotra for receiving the ‘Most Stylish’ trophy and gave a heartfelt speech.

He said, “If there is one thing that I can actually do decently well, is entertain. I like making people happy and putting a smile on their face. I feel like being an entertainer is my calling. And winning this award in front of Aamir Khan, my original idol and one of the main reasons why I wanted to become an entertainer, is such a huge honor for me.”

Well, their camaraderie was bang on, and it’s a rare sight to see a senior actor and actors from the current generation bond so well.

Can we see them in a movie together?
