Arshad Warsi has put to words a notion that has, until now, only circulated in the media circuit through hushed whispers. “The [Bigg Boss] show is down market,” he says, alluding to the Salman Khan-hosted reality series that is now in its 11th season. The poor quality of the programme, which sees celebrities reside in a specially-constructed house for approximately 90 days, has been topic of discussion over the past few years.

“People on the show, I hear, are tacky,” says Warsi, who hosted the first season in 2006. “I haven’t seen this season, but I’ve heard about it. The channel is attempting to boost the ratings by showcasing the things that sell. And thus, morality is taking a backseat,” he says, alluding to the recent crop of participants, who, inarguably, turn to violence and misbehaviour to garner attention. Warsi calls the makers of the controversial show “businessmen”, who are not attempting to make the world better with their offering. Joining the likes of several actors and producers in blaming the audience for the worsening quality of content on TV, Warsi says, “People enjoy watching crass, and the channel is merely serving it. The content showcased on Indian television is regressive. The day people change, their taste [in content], the narrative of the shows will also change. If the world wants to see sensible people in the house, the channel will oblige. The audience wants to see dramatic people, those who fight, hit and abuse.” The suggestion, however, may seem debatable, given that the downfall of the show came to fore last week, when it failed to procure a spot on BARC’s top five TV shows, which saw Amitabh Bachchan’s Kaun Banega Crorepati ace the list.

An adaptation of the British sitcom, Big Brother, the Indian version, Warsi says, was not created with the intention of merely drawing attention. “The concept back then was to understand the psyche of people and notice the developments that occur when they are made to reside in a house, isolated from the world. No one wanted to cause any trouble. There was no nudity or violence demanded in the clause.”

Given that the drama unfolded only towards the latter half of the series, the makers decided to rearrange the format, Warsi suggests. “When you meet new individuals, you can be cordial for a week. Then, you discover their traits. When good behaviour wears out, the dynamics change. It takes time for people to reach that stage. But, now the channel wants immediate TRP success, so they are consciously sending nutcases into the house.”

deepikaBraveheart diva Deepika Padukone came out in the open and publicly discussed her battle with depression last year on a TV channel. While the actress is at the peak of her career with back-to-back hits in her kitty, DP recently spoke at India Economic Summit and addressed her fear of depression relapse. Terming her past struggle as “such a bad experience”, the Padmavati actress always carries a fear of relapse.

The 31-year-old actor was interacting on the stigma surrounding mental illness at India Economic Summit. “I don’t think I can say that I’m completely over it (depression). There is always a fear at the back of my mind that I might have a relapse because it has been such a bad experience for me,” Padukone said. When quizzed if her mental condition cost her movie roles, Dippy opened up saying,”Maybe there are people who haven’t offered me films because they think I was depressed and I can’t act. Maybe, I don’t know. I’m in a good space because I can choose the movies that I want to act in, but I don’t think everyone has that luxury of where they want to work or when they want to work,” she said.

She started the ‘The Live Love Laugh Foundation’ to help those like her to cope up with depression. As she gears up for the release of her upcoming period-drama, a report by Cosmopolitan suggests Deepika sought medical assistance while the shooting the climax scene of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. Rumor has it that the 31-year-old was extremely disturbed by the self-immolation scene (Jauhar). The suicide scene transported her back to the time when the actor was herself battling depression. Well, it isn’t just Dippy but her rumored beau Ranveer Singh too got seemed to have taken his portrayal of the merciless Khilji way too seriously. So much so that he was advised by his friends to visit a psychiatrist. However, both the stars completed their shoot with an unsettling impact on their minds. If these reports are anything to by, one can only imagine the level of brilliance the Ram Leela stars have put in to step into the shoes of their characters.

Stressing on the importance of inculcation of mental health in school curriculum, Deepika said, “A large part of the stigma comes from the fact that we (just) talk about physical education in schools. I had physical education in my school, but we didn’t have anything to talk about mental health. It’s not a part of the curriculum. If we included that in the curriculum and introduced the idea or the importance of mental health at school level, there will be no stigma.”

Unlike others, Dippy didn’t shy away from owning her issues. Elaborating on her decision to go public with her depression battle, she said, “I didn’t think about the repercussions. The idea really was to change the way people in India and the world see mental illness”.

On the work front, Deepika Padukone will be next seen in SLB’s Padmavati alongside Ranveer and Shahid Kapoor. The trailer of the magnum opus was released some time back and while Deepika, Shahid put on a great show, it is baddie Ranveer to watch out for!

During the launch of Ted Talks India, Shah Rukh Khan was asked about competition with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar who are quite successful on TV as well. To which he simply said he isn’t competing with anyone.

And it was amidst all of this when a journalist addressed him as ‘Salman’ and not just once but a couple of times. However, she immediately corrected her mistake and apologised for the goof-up. But SRK being the king of wit had a hilarious response leaving everyone in splits.

Most people of our generation have given up watching TV and it’s not even surprising anymore. We have Netflix when we chill in bed, we stream everything on our laptops, we save movies to our iPads for that long cab drive and basically screens have replaced the good old binge watching TV on the couch, with a wonderful plate of fries while our parents sat with us watching ‘Malgudi Days’. Save heart, for our favourite dramas from the 90s are all set to make a comeback in our lives.

I don’t mean to say that they are being remade, but what I mean is that they will be available for our viewing real soon. Remember those days of watching DD and witnessing some great storylines with no scheming ‘saas bahu’ drama or no ‘Crime Patrol’ being shoved into our eyes. I am talking about shows like ‘Circus’, ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ and even ‘Fauji’ which catapulted Shah Rukh to fame.

“Some material from the archives has been put on our official website for sale. The next step is to be able to syndicate some of the popular content and make them available through on-demand platforms like Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime. We have set up a separate social media team that has been asked to individually reply to those writing to us on Facebook or Twitter. Live updates of events, matches or shows are now being done that has made a lot of difference”, said Shashi Shekhar Vempadi, CEO of Prasar Bharti.  We want to watch things at our convenience and having nostalgia available on Netflix or Hotstar would guarantee a visual treat. DD is currently going through a major revamp and is redesigning all social media strategies. After all, old is gold right?

In a career spanning over 4 decades, Tom Alter worked in as many as 56 films. One of the finest actors Hindi cinema ever saw, Tom Alter was excellence redefined. With his demise at the age of 67, Indian cinema has lost a precious gem. As people poured tributes over social media mourning the passing of the legend, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar remember the time he first met Tom Alter. You know when BBC comes out with a TV series; it’s going to be good. But this time with the release of the trailer for ‘Blue Planet 2′, they have exceeded our expectations (which by the way were set really high).

In case you aren’t familiar with what ‘The Blue Planet’ is then we assure you, you are in for a treat.

Blue Planet is a nature documentary series which was created and produced by the BBC in 2001. It is narrated by veteran broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough.

The Blue Planet series was called “the first ever comprehensive series on the natural history of the world’s oceans” comprising eight, 50-minute episodes, each of which examined a different, never-seen-before aspect of marine life.

The series went on to win a number of Emmy and BAFTA TV awards for its music and cinematography.

Now 16 years later, the makers are back with the second part which is essentially a ‘prequel’.

The trailer for ‘Blue Planet 2′ has been released and it gives us a preview of what we can expect from the full series and it is nothing short of stunning.

The series will not only be narrated by Sir David Attenborough, but will also feature a song made in collaboration between Radiohead and legendary film composer Hans Zimmer who has scored over 150 films including Gladiator, The Dark Knight trilogy, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

They have reworked the track “Bloom” from Radiohead’s 2011 album The King of Limbs, re-recording the composition with BBC Concert Orchestra.

“Bloom was inspired by the original Blue Planet series so it’s great to be able to come full circle with the song and reimagine it for this incredible landmark’s sequel,” singer Thom Yorke of Radiohead said in an interview.

From spitting dolphins to ‘dancing yeti crabs’, sea dragons, giant cuttlefish to walking starfish- you’ll find the footage of every aquatic animal that you’ve ever known about in this series, that took 4 years to make.

But from what we see, the results are worth it!

The visuals are so stunning that one can even compare them to Pixar stories. At least that’s what Producer Mark Brownlow says. “You’re meeting little tusk fish that can pick up shells and smash them. You’ve got an octopus that can disguise itself from a shark attack. The level of characterization we’re getting from our animals, they are almost like real life Pixar stories,” he said in an interview.

If you still aren’t convinced, then spare 5 minutes and watch this beautiful trailer:

The exact release date of the series hasn’t been released yet however it definitely will hit our TV screens in 2017, on BBC One.

The countdown to the eleventh season of Bigg Boss has begun and the excitement is increasing with each passing day. The show that goes on for a period of 3 months definitely keeps the audience glued to their TV screens. Why you ask? Because firstly, it is hosted by the ever-so-stylish Salman Khan and his die-hard fans cannot resist the opportunity to catch a glimpse of him on their TV screens. And second, the show has everything one could want in a reality show- fights, mind games, controversial couples and of course, lots of gossip.

With a very interesting yet confusing theme of ‘Neighbours’, it was revealed that the contestants for this year’s season would have a good mix of common people and celebrities.

But the names of the commoners have finally been revealed and we have to say, it includes an interesting bunch of people:

1. Sapna Choudhary

You might recognize her from a few dance videos that went viral for all the wrong reasons. Sapna Choudhary hails from a middle-class family of Haryana. She first made headlines with her ‘Haryanvi Ragini’ song which hurt the sentiments of a particular caste. In fact, it even landed her in legal trouble and the final verdict on the case is still pending. Later, it was her ‘hot’ dance videos that went viral over the internet and made her a social media star of sorts.

2. Zubair Khan

Zubair Khan is a Bollywood producer but with very strong underworld connections. He is Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parker’s son-in-law and was the producer of the Shradha Kapoor starrer ‘Haseena Parker’.

However, he doesn’t like being linked with the mafia  anymore and wants to establish a name for himself in the filmmaking industry. In an earlier interview he revealed, “I moved out of this area in 1997 and have been part of the film industry for 15 years. I have a production house called Garbage, which produces ad films along with my partner Chandrapal Singh.”

3. Shivani Durgah

Shivani reminds us of last season’s infamous contestant Om Swami as she too is a self-proclaimed god woman. Surprisingly, Shivani holds two PhDs from Chicago University and hails from Noida. But currently, she is based in Mumbai and addresses herself as ‘Singh Vahini’.

4. Jyoti Kumari

Honestly, she is the only one who we can consider as a commoner in its truest sense. The girl hails from Patna and is the daughter of a clerk. She is currently a student in Delhi and has been a topper in her 10th, 12th grade and the UPSC exams.

While the verdict is still out on who would be the celebrity contestants, this list of commoners has managed to garner the nation’s attention and piqued our curiosity as well.
