He’s Bollywood’s man with the Midas touch. Almost a month after his Diwali offering, ‘Golmaal Again’, released, the film is still enjoying a run at cinema halls across the country, and raking in the moolah. Interestingly, more than the actors in the franchise, Shetty has grown to become the stellar attraction of the film. Inarguably, his persona plays a pivotal role in pulling the audience to theatres. Shetty is a star in his own right.

The comic caper, which crossed the R200 crore mark in net domestic box-office collections last week, has now hit R300 crore at the global market. It is being upheld as among the top 10 Hindi films of all times. But even as the film appears to surpass records with its numbers, the director-producer has not stopped counting. “Every morning, I wake up to a new figure,” says Shetty. “We are still keeping track of the numbers. I am elated, but more than me, the guys in my office [are excited]. There is a spring in their step. Seeing them smile and laugh is the most heartening thing for me.”

Even though his faith in his outing was evident when he shrugged off questions about the film clashing with Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar, Shetty admits the success has exceeded his expectations. “When I first saw the final edit, I knew it would do well; but I didn’t expect it to do so well. I have been watching the film with the audience at different theatres in Mumbai. I quietly slink in when the auditorium’s lights dim. Seeing viewers roar in delight gives me a high. And when people say they are seeing it for the second and third time, I tell myself, ‘Man, you got it right!'”

Not known to be party-hearty, he has been celebrating with unit hands and family by treating them to dinners, even agreeing to a visit to expensive places of their choice. “When I am not working, I am at home. I am made like this, what to do?” he sheepishly admits.

Whenever we grab hold of Shetty, he is quick to attribute every success to his crew. Filmmaking, he says, is always a team effort. “From the star to the spotboy, every member plays a part in the success of the film. I can’t take all the credit.” Neither is he taking the acclaim, nor a well-earned break. “But, perhaps in December when my son [Ishaan] has a break from school during Christmas and New Year, we might go on a vacation. I don’t know where [we will go]; Ishaan decides the destination.”

Until then, it’s still all work and no play for Shetty. He has begun the pre-production work for his next, the remake of the Telugu film Temper (2015). The piles of papers scattered on his office desk are testimony that he has already sunk his head deep into the project. “We are working on the script. The film will roll by the end of April,” he says simply of the film, which marks his first Bollywood collaboration with Ranveer Singh.

The “awesome” actor, Shetty had alluded to, would fit the bill of the corrupt cop well, and tells us now that his preference to cast artistes based on their suitability for the role gains precedence over favouritism. Even though he has collaborated with Ajay Devgn several times since his first outing, Zameen (2003), he avoids fuelling the industry’s camp mentality. “Why should I? I don’t live in a camp. I live in a seven-storied building,” he jokes, as we thank our stars that he used better judgement while picking puns for the comic caper. Shetty is known to complete his projects in a start-to-finish schedule. He credits the detailing that goes into the pre-production for his ability to pull them off in time. “The technicians have worked with me for years, so they know exactly what I want. We work in tandem.”

A still from the film

His small screen outings since he debuted nine years ago, have made him a household name. He’s teaming up with Karan Johar for a reality show to find the country’s next superstar. But fans of the stylish filmmaker are hopeful that, like his contemporaries, Shetty too would give acting a go. The answer is a firm, “No.” “I’d rather remain behind the camera, but I have driven cars in my films during action sequences in blink-and-you-miss-it roles.”

After a spate of disappointing box-office releases, Rohit Shetty appears to be having the last laugh. The director’s latest comic caper, Golmaal Again has hit jackpot by earning Rs 200 crore within 24 days of its release. The figure marks the highest secured by an Ajay Devgn-starrer, with the actor’s Shivaay (2016) and Drishyam (2015) too, securing only Rs 100.3 crore and Rs 91.97 crore respectively.

An ecstatic Shetty tells mid-day, “I am overwhelmed with the response that the film has received and want to thank the audience for appreciating it.” Shetty’s Diwali release hit the marquee on October 19, along with Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar, which has approximately earned Rs 60 crore till date. The positive word-of-mouth means the film continues to draw viewers to cinema halls.

“Production has been on my mind for a while,” says Tusshar Kapoor, as he shares with mid-day his love for stories. While the prospect had lingered in his mind in the past, he is now considering it earnestly.

“The idea is a concrete one. There are a few stories on my mind that I wish to produce, but production is a full-time job. It can be exhausting. I am committed as an actor, and do not wish to leave acting to pursue production. So, striking a balance will be necessary,” says Kapoor. He adds that while he isn’t certain of when he will make his debut, the idea of venturing into production is playing on his mind “all the time.”

Given that sister Ekta has made a mark as producer, both in films and television, one might assume that Kapoor could benefit from collaborating with her. However, the actor talks about starting out alone. “I want an entity that’s entirely mine. Ekta and I have distinct tastes, and equally strong opinions. We live under the same roof, so, I think it’s okay to have separate work identities. Of course, we always have each other’s back.”

Kapoor returned to acting after a paternity break following the birth of his son, Laksshya, in June 2016. He was certain to take his tiny tot on the sets of Golmaal Again, as soon as he was old enough to accompany him. “He was excited to see the colours and hear the music,” Kapoor says.

Reprising and recreating of old chartbusters is the latest trend in B-town. From ‘Kala Chashma’ to ‘Tamma Tamma’, many 90s hit tracks have been rehashed lately but not every experiment is successful.

Remember those famous lyrics, “Neend churayi meri kisne o sanam….Tu ne”? Well, every kid born in the 90s has grooved to ‘Neend Churai Meri’ from the cult film ‘Ishq’.

Anu Malik’s music, Kumar Sanu, and Udit Narayan’s voice were all that was needed to create a Bollywood hit number during those days. The song not only ruled the music charts for weeks but also become everyone’s favourite song.

And finally, Rohit Shetty has released the reprised version of 90’s hit song in his upcoming flick ‘Golmaal Again’. This is the first time that the same actor is seen in the recreated version of his own song. 20 years ago, this song debuted in the Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla starrer ‘Ishq’ and now the same track has been reprised in ‘Golmaal Again’ as ‘Maine Tujko Dekha’. Though, after listening to the new track we wish what happened 20 years ago was left untouched.

Sadly, Rohit and Ajay had a different plan. What Anu Malik created once, has now been crushed by the same hands. Nor do you get Kajol’s and Ajay’s peppy chemistry and neither does the song leaves a real impact. This new track is an utter disappointment and makes you wonder why the track was even remade in the first place.

The song focuses on Parineeti Chopra as Ajay tries to woo her, and I so wish I could say this song didn’t destroy those memories, but I just can’t. Growing up listening to this epic song is one thing that will stay with many kids who were born in 90’s. Even today, when the song comes on, one can’t refrain from grooving to its beats and sing along, exhausting our vocal cords. That was the magic of that cult song!

How Golmaal Destroyed Our Memory Of ‘Neend Churai Meri'© Ajay Devgn FFilms

There is nothing new that this song offers. You are presented with Ajay’s trademark steps and a train to sequence from ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’. It seems like producers these days are hell-bent on ruining every old song.

Ajay and Rohit, congratulations on royally messing up yet another 90’s song.

golmaal-againThe much-in-news trailer of ‘Golmaal Again’ is here and it looks bigger and better than all the other installments of the franchise. This time however with Ajay Devgn, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Tabu, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Kemmu and Parineeti Chopra, the story has an added twist of horror.

The three-minute-long trailer that was unveiled post a trailer launch in Mumbai sees the story unfold for the fourth installment. Ajay Devgn and Shreyas Talpade set the base for the audience as the trailer opens to a howling background score. What follows is a series of supernatural events that set the tone of a paranormal existence in the house where all these characters reside in the film. Parineeti is the fresh female face in the film and looks breathtakingly beautiful in each frame, Tabu as Rukmini, on the other hand, does an impeccable job with her acting chops.

The fourth film boasts of a huge star cast including Parineeti, Tabu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sanjay Mishra and Johnny Lever while retaining the usual suspects – Ajay, Tusshar, Arshad, Kunal and Shreyas. The film is scheduled to release on October 20, 2017.

When the first installment of the ‘Golmaal’ released over 10 years ago, no one could have predicted the amount of success it would achieve. Since the first installment managed to leave everyone in laughing fits and of course, nobody minds a good laugh, the movie went on to became everyone’s favorite. So the directors and the producers decided to jump on the success by releasing more installments in the ‘Golmaal’ franchise and that’s pretty much what the audience needed.

Although the next two parts didn’t fare as well as the first one in the box office, fans of the series eagerly awaited the next part. The fandom is so strong that ‘Golmaal’ is the seventh highest grossing film series in Bollywood.

If we talk about the gist of the movie series, the story revolves around the lives of four (five from the third film) friends Gopal, Lucky, Madhav and Laxman who some way or the other, happen to have a ton of comical incidents taking place in their life which usually ends with something dramatic and insane!

Yesterday, Ajay Devgn shared a few posters of ‘Golmaal Again’ on his Instagram, putting an end to the misery of the fans as he said that the trailer would release the next day.

The posters provided us with a hint of the fourth installment being a horror comedy. And now judging by the trailer, we can see that it stands true to the film’s tagline–“Iss Diwali Logic Nahi Sirf Magic”.

Starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Parineeti Chopra, Kunal Kehmu, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade and Tusshar Kapoor, Golmaal Again is all set to make our Diwali better.

Have a look at the trailer:

Back with its witty dialogues and star cast, the movie sure looks like a blockbuster.

Apart from the new storyline and the cast members, there’s a twist in Shreyas Talpade’s character too. In the last film, his character Laxman, stammered and this time his character will be seen with a lisp. Shreyas said an interview, “Considering all of us are getting extra sensitive about little things… this time, he is not stammering. There is another quirk to his character. He’s got a slight lisp.”

In case you are still worried that the fourth installment might not be as hilarious as the previous ones, Arshad Warsi has promised new jokes in the fourth film. “Had they been boring I would have been fed up. Here there’s no space to feel like that. This time too we have new jokes and skits.”

The wait for ‘Golmaal Again’ will end next month as the movie is set for a Diwali release i.e. 20th October.

The trailer of the fourth installment of the ‘Golmaal’ series, ‘Golmaal Again’ is all set to wow the audience with its trailer on Friday. Director Rohit Shetty is known for his twists in the activities that he does. Be it planning a prank with Ajay Devgn on the film’s sets or anything in general. So, how could he not add any exciting element prior to his film’s trailer launch?

He’s charged the audience for a laughter riot by releasing three exciting and quirky posters of the film, which has the entire star cast doing random and illogical things. Shetty is known for not leaving his crew and cast, and therefore in all his ‘Golmaal’ installments, we get to see the same faces, and we aren’t complaining.

However, in ‘Golmaal Again,’ Parineeti Chopra has replaced Kareena Kapoor Khan and Tabu is a new addition to the mad Golmaal family. Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu and Shreyas Talpade have remained consistent. As one of the posters itself says, “Iss Diwali Logic Nahin Sirf Magic!”

Ajay Devgn is said to have given dates reserved for the shoot of Indra Kumar’s ‘Total Dhamaal’ to Rajkumar Gupta’s ‘Raid’. Sources say the actor felt as ‘Golmaal Again’ is slated for a Diwali release, he could avoid diving into a comic caper back-to-back. Makes sense.
