After a long hiatus, Saif Ali Khan will finally be seen shining on the silver screen.  His ‘chef’ avatar was loved by everyone back in ‘Salaam Namaste’, remember? The Pataudi royal is ready to impress the audience with the official remake of ‘Chef’. He’s of course, playing the titular role. The movie tells the story of a fancy chef who is desperately trying to strike a balance between his professional and personal life.

Saif is essaying the role of Roshan Kalra , a celebrity chef whose professional commitments have taken a toll on his personal life. Padmapriya is playing the role of his wife, Radha, who is constantly asking him to spend time with his son. The trailer shows the fun food trail that the father-son duo take in order to spend more time with each other.

Eventually he quits his job and opens his own food truck to be closer to home, and above all, to be there for his son.

The movie was initially scheduled to be released in July but has been shifted to be released on October 6th. Saif was last seen in ‘Rangoon’ opposite Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor. The original ‘Chef’ has John Favreau play the lead role and the movie is in fact also written by him. The movie was a hit and struck a chord with the audience. Saif definitely looks promising as a confused father.

rakesh-and-hrithik-roshanActress Kangana Ranaut, who got involved in a legal battle with Hrithik Roshan last year, says their fight is still not over as she deserves an apology from the actor and his father Rakesh Roshan.

Kangana opened up on the controversy once again on CNN-News18’s show “Now Showing”, read a statement by the channel.

The actress says the senior Roshan had tried to fix a meeting between her and Hrithik, but that is yet to happen.

“I’m still waiting to meet him face-to-face and exchange two words on this and sort this out, but he’s been running and hiding from me,” Kangana said.

“He (Hrithik) and his father have made fools of themselves, they should apologise to me in public. Even if they don’t, I will clarify to the world what happened to the case. The case has not died down. They couldn’t prove anything,” she added.

Issues between the two began when Kangana hinted at Hrithik being her “ex-boyfriend” when she said in an interview that she fails to understand “why exes do silly things to get your attention”. The actress lodged a legal complaint against Hrithik for “misusing” the confidential emails and photographs of the time when they were together.

Hrithik later filed a complaint with the cybercrime cell, claiming an imposter had been emailing Kangana from a bogus email ID, pretending to be him.

“For me it’s important that he (Hrithik) claimed many things, but couldn’t prove anything. You can’t go about slapping notices on people. He had been preparing all this for two years. He used to send himself emails from my account because he had my password,” Kangana said.

“I stayed quiet till now because I needed time to understand what all they (Roshan family) were doing… Of course it was all lies, but I didn’t know what they would do next. I was scared. Look at what happened to the Malayalam actress because she went and complained to the actor’s wife.

“They got her raped… Of course that was much after my case, but I was scared. So many things happen to women. The media would call me, or my sister and say, ‘You are not safe… You guys should move to a safe place or go in hiding’.”

Without naming anyone, Kangana said she used to get calls from people from the industry who told her, “You should apologise, they are powerful people.”

“He (Hrithik) and his father claimed they would expose me and shock the world, but they couldn’t prove anything. He (Hrithik) slapped a notice saying she caused great harm to my reputation because she called me a ‘silly ex’… I am the silly ex. But, he couldn’t prove it. So, he changed his stance and said… She’s right, she had an affair, but that wasn’t me, it was an imposter. But, he couldn’t prove that also,” Kangana said.

The show featuring the “Queen” actress will be aired later on Thursday.

When it comes to horror movies, most of them never fail to frighten and entertain us, at the same time. With the onset of filming dreadful plots along with a captivating storyline, the filmmakers have used every opportunity to scare the audience. The essence of fear and what might go wrong is in itself, a thrilling experience. With a reliance on special effects and 3D sound effects, such movies can be extremely potent film forms, tapping into our dreams and invading our nightmares.

Director David Sandberg is here with his new film ‘Annabelle: Creation’, another terrifying story to the paranormal demon-hosting doll franchise. ‘Annabelle: Creation’ is the third time the doll has been on the silver screen, after a guest appearance in ‘The Conjuring’ (2013) and as the lead in ‘Annabelle’ (2014). In many ways, this film is probably the scariest of the lot.

Back in 1940’s, a doll-maker and his wife, played by Anthony LaPaglia and Miranda Otto living in the demonic bungalow in the suburbs, suffers the loss of their only daughter in a tragic accident. The wife, Esther Mullins is a simpering loner and Samuel Mullins is in a bizarre state of lament. Still grieving the death of their daughter, they both decide to open up their California farmhouse as an orphanage to young girls.

The couple don’t realise that they are giving the demon exactly what it wants, more hosts! Finding the house open to the victims of its terrifying tricks, the doll starts terrorizing the youngsters using jump scares, deafening audio stabs, flickering bulbs and more supernatural events. As it is in most movies, the evil doll preys on the weak first, and this one is no different.

Mr. Mullins seems to be a good man but his wife is more discreet, injurious and bed-ridden. The focus falls on Janice, who finds the damned doll in an abandoned room and feels connected to the dark side. The possessed doll tries to contact her and preys on her. Before they know it, souls are being fought over and crosses are being subverted everywhere. It is revealed later in the film, the same doll was in the hands of their little daughter when she died. Her tormented spirit is hijacked by the demon who uses the same doll to get a foothold on Earth. The movie shows a trail of monstrously awful instances affecting the lives of those girls and their family.

However dark or primitive the plot may be, viewers are always attracted to the horror genre. And, for the most part, ‘Annabelle: Creation’ keeps the fear alive.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha Movie Review‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ poster

‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’
U/A: Satire/Drama
Director: Shree Narayan Singh
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar
Rating: 4/5

There is a point of no return in the plot when we, the audience, become so immersed in the protagonist’s crusade for a better tomorrow that we are cheering and stomping our feet in encouragement for that bright sunshine-drenched tomorrow of which Sahir Ludhianvi dreamt in ‘Pyaasa’ and ‘Phir Subah Hogi’.

Our protagonist Madhav’s battle is not really reformatory in the way the great heroes of our times meant it to be. In Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Satyakam’, when the protagonist Dharmendra marries the rape victim, he does it with the least amount of self-congratulations. In ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’, Akshay Kumar’s mission to build a toilet for his wife is compared with Shah Jahan building the Taj Mahal for his wife.

I wonder who should feel more affronted by such flamboyant self-glorification: Moghul history or Modi politics. Either way, there is much too much self-congratulations and heroic hurrahs playing at the foreground of this eventful drama, accompanied by an over-punctuated background score.

Akshay Kumar means business. This film is not so much a vehicle to promote the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat campaign as to promote Akshay Kumar, period. He milks the film for all his trademark chuckles and giggles, making Madhav seem like a Basu Chatterjee hero with a certain sly and smooth sinewiness to his heroism.

It is debutant director Shree Narayan Singh who proves you don’t need extra sinewiness to shine in every frame. He is the Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee of our times. He makes hygiene and sanitation seem humorous without trivialising or tempering the issue. The sorority evidenced among the village women as they troop off in the morning for nature’s call is captured with a respectful laugh.

Here is proof that a film can make a social point without wearing a constantly sullen demeanour.

Throughout the lengthy film, the director maintains a kinetic momentum. He has his character’s feelings on his fingertips. He digs into the high-points in the drama with the disarmed delight of a kid scooping into a bowl of ice-cream. He negotiates the dips and curves in this bombastic tale of a man who must fight ‘sanskaar’ (no no, not the kind favoured by the censor board) to build a toilet for his newly married wife.

A warm earthiness and a nimble wisdom pervade the storytelling. The plot is a pyramid of high-pitched drama captured in the basic colours of nature’s components by cinematographer Anshuman Mahaley (he had shot the first ‘Jolly LLB’ film using an equally gritty palate). That the director is also the editor, helps him to remain on top of the commodious material. But the film could have been shortened post-interval where some of the toilet-building drama gets repetitive and shrill.

Though the high-pitched propagandist tenor and tone of the narration become overpowering after a point — as does Akshay Kumar’s exaggerated humanism — the film keeps us absolutely close to its heart as Madhav and Jaya’s love story acquires a universality by dint of their intimate affinity to the grassroot level of existence.

Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar play against one another in sparring spasms, their age difference notwithstanding. They look like a couple. The real performing sparks fly when the supporting cast — Sudhir Pande, Divyendu Sharma, Anupam Kher — are around to lend heft to the socio-political argument on how women in rural India need dignity before empowerment.

This is essentially a cause-without-pause melodrama set at an opulent octave. Happily, director Shree Narayan Singh counterbalances those shrill notes of self-righteousness and propaganda with just the right doses of warmth, humour and irony.

Don’t look for subtlety in the storytelling in ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ and you will come away a happy viewer with some relevant thoughts on how non-metropolitan India exists without caving into a depression.

dilipLegendary actor Dilip Kumar’s recovery from kidney-related problems is a miracle, says his wife and former actress Saira Banu, for whom it was a “nightmare” to deal with the sudden deterioration of his health.

Dilip Kumar, 94, was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital on August 2.

Saira, who has been married to the actor since over five decades and is 22 years younger to him, accompanied Dilip Kumar when he was wheeled out of the hospital here.

She told the media: “He is in good health now. All of it felt like a nightmare… How he suddenly fell sick. I am thankful to the Almighty… This has been a miracle.”

Saira thanked the management, doctors and staff members of the Bandra West facility for taking care of Dilip Kumar, and even expressed gratitude for fans who prayed for his well-being.

“The prayers were accepted by Allah and he is feeling well now… I can’t tell you how grateful I am to God that we have come out of this.

“It was a terrible thing that happened. Within a few days, he fell so sick that we just didn’t know what to do.”

She hoped that “after going home he will feel even better soon”.

Ajay Kumar Pande, Vice President, Lilavati Hospital, on Wednesday had said that Dilip Kumar was “critical” when he was admitted to the hospital over complaints of dehydration and urinary tract infection.

High potassium and creatinine levels had raised concerns that the actor may have to be put on dialysis. But doctors had decided against it after he started responding well to treatment.

Pande called Saira a “sati Savitri” for her dedication to her husband.

Saira laughed and said: “If a woman’s husband is India’s ‘Kohinoor’, why won’t his wife be ‘sati Savitri’. All wives love their husbands and it’s no big deal. Whatever I am doing I won’t say that I am taking care of him… It is my love for him and I am ready to do it 100 times more for him.”

Last seen on the big screen in “Qila” in 1998, the actor was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. He is known for films like “Devdas”, “Mughal-e-Azam” and “Karma”.

SRKShah Rukh Khan

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan feels earlier his family used to feel awkward by the paparazzi culture, but now they consider it a part of their lives. He says his family has sold their souls for photographs.

“(Being photographed is) the part of stardom that we all have accepted…I think everybody in this day and age is fair game. We’ve sold our souls for selfies,” Shah Rukh told CNN-News18.

Shah Rukh, who is married to Gauri Khan, has three children — Aryan, Suhana and AbRam.

In a video gone viral last month, Suhana, 17, looked helpless and uncomfortable as she tried to hide her face and turns around to escape shutterbugs while she waited for the doors of an elevator to open at a theatre’s basement.

“I think the kids started feeling awkward with all the paraphernalia. Every time I go out in a public place, I don’t take them with me. My wife doesn’t come, my children don’t come. I go to functions alone or post they have gone,” Shah Rukh said.

To avoid such occasions, Shah Rukh said he made few adjustments for his family.

“Some adjustments have to be made…one of them was that I sent them abroad to study. Not because of the scrutiny, but because they were feeling a little awkward with all the attention they have,” Shah Rukh said.

“I’m happy they’ve gone. Where they’re studying, to a large extent people don’t know me. (But) I’m Okay with them being photographed.

“I understand photographs (need) to be taken, I’ve explained it to my kids also that listen, if photographers come, stand, do the picture and say it, ‘Please can I go now?’ And they’ll listen to you. I’ve known them for 25 years,” he added.

Shah Rukh says his children feel that being “photographed doesn’t make you important.”

“More often than not they’ll tell me how to behave with the paparazzi. They’ll say, ‘Papa, now don’t lose your temper. There will be too many people.’ I think they’re quite mature about it,” he said.
