Drenched in patriotism, the new teaser of Akshay Kumar’s ‘Gold’ is finally here, and it is giving everyone goosebumps and a surge of patriotism as well. Saying that we are impressed would be an understatement because by far, this is the best movie teaser we have seen this year.

With every movie, Akshay Kumar keeps setting the benchmark higher and this teaser only proves that he can give any actor a run for their money. If you haven’t seen the teaser yet, get ready to feel a rush of emotions.

The teaser begins with a statement which says, “Please stand up for the national anthem”. While most of us wait to hear the familiar strains of our National Anthem, it begins with the British anthem ‘God Save The Queen’ instead. First few seconds and we are already unsettled.

The 54-second clip clearly sets the fact straight showing how for 200 years, Indians were being forced to stand for the British national anthem, taking us back to colonial India and the British oppression.

Soon we get a glimpse of Akshay Kumar and we just can’t help but whistle. With a burning passion in his eyes, he is seen taking out the Indian national flag and that gives us an idea of his goal. The teaser then focuses on ‘one man’s dream’ that ‘made the British stand up for our anthem’.

Despite us already knowing the basic theme of the story, which is freedom from British oppression, there still is a sense of mystery as to how this one man will get the gold for India.. The teaser ends with “Vande Mataram” leaving us with millions of thoughts and unsaid emotions.

For those of you who don’t know what ‘Gold’ is all about,  it is the story of a Bengali hockey player, who wants to win a gold medal for India, during the British rule.

Taking to Twitter Akshay Kumar shared the new teaser on the public’s demand.

If the teaser alone has managed to shake us to our very core, we can only wonder what the trailer has in store for us.

Directed by Reema Kagti, the film traces the journey of a hockey player and talks about what it meant to be patriotic during the pre-independence era. This will also be TV actor Mouni Roy’s Bollywood debut.

Earlier, it was being said that ‘Gold’ is a biopic on former hockey player Balbir Singh Sr. However, clearing the air, Producer Ritesh Sidhwani stated in an interview that, “It is not a biopic. It is a completely fictional story but it is set against a real backdrop between 1933-48 India about what the country was, the sports…about hockey. It is not based on any character.”

Gold, even though was rumoured to have deviated from its release date, seem to be on schedule. The film has retained its release date, August 15, marking the occasion of India’s Independence Day. Well, owing to the patriotic theme of the film, it is an apt date chosen by the makers for the release of the Akshay Kumar, Mouni Roy starrer.

Readers may be aware that Gold is a sports drama revolving around the real life incident of India’s first hockey win post-Independence. Not surprisingly, there is an emotional value attached to the film and it is not special only to the makers but also every Indian. Explaining the reason behind it, Reema Kagti stated in reports about how India had won a gold medal even in the past. The director of Gold revealed that India had won a gold medal way back in 1936 during the Berlin Olympics. However, the then India was under the British Rule.

But, the win of 1948 in London was after India became an independent nation. Speaking one of those special moments from her film in recent reports, Reema Kagti reminisced about a sequence where Akshay Kumar pulls out the Indian National Flag in the locker room to boost the spirits of his teammates. Apparently, the flag was then banned in Germany and yet the moment is iconic because it inspired the players as they saluted it.

The emotions of patriotism, according to Reema, is one of the driving forces in Gold. The film also will have both the iconic matches as a part of the film – the 1936 and the 1948 matches. Reema maintained that even though the characters in the film are not completely based on real life individuals, they have been inspired by the memorable ones. Like, the filmmaker mentioned that the role of Akshay Kumar is partly inspired by the assistant manager of the Indian hockey squad during the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He had actually risen up the rank by the time India won its first match in 1948 in London.

On the other hand, elaborating on the prep for Gold, Reema Kagti maintained that she wanted a professional for her and the cast to understand the game. So she got Michael Nobbs on board, who has not only played in the 1948 Olympics, but has also coached the Indian hockey team for two years since 2011. She further added that her team too underwent prep beyond just learning the game. They had to understand the sport when it was played in a different era, that is the 40s and the rules, even the sticks used then were different.

John Abraham, who will be seen donning army uniform in his upcoming film “Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran”, says he stands by his actor friend Akshay Kumar’s decision to auction the naval costume he had worn in “Rustom”

John Abraham, who will be seen donning army uniform in his upcoming film “Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran”, says he stands by his actor friend Akshay Kumar’s decision to auction the naval costume he had worn in “Rustom”. Akshay and his wife Twinkle have been served legal notice and are accused of “playing with the sentiments” of the armed forces by putting up for auction a naval costume from his film “Rustom”.

“I am not going to be politically correct but I stand by him,” John told reporters here. The director of “Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran” Abhishek Sharma said Col Brijmohan Sharma helped the team with the research for the film. “Col Brijmohan Sharma was on board, he is retired now. He was in charge of the orientation test. He made sure everything from the army camp to the uniform and behaviour was taken care of,” Abhishek said.

“He did not care if someone was actor or not, he would just pull us up, saying, what is this? He was clear he wanted things to look clear,” John added. The 45-year-old actor-producer decided to go solo with “Parmanu…” after his production house John Abraham Entertainment terminated partnership with Kriarj Entertainment over material breaches and bad reputation.

Kriarj Entertainment, accused JA Entertainment for not fulfilling their commitment to finish the project. “At one point I called up Abhishek saying this is too much happening and he would tell me, look at the positive side, there is publicity. We would motivate each other as we have not done anything wrong, we are honest and it will happen right way. “It is difficult when someone points finger at you, at your company, you don’t like it. This film is like my child, you feel like turning around and tearing apart. I am not being violent. It has all ended well. My producers, cast and team is here and it is important to me.”

“Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran” was earlier scheduled to release in December 2017 but reportedly got delayed to avoid a clash at the box office with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmaavat”. The release was later postponed thrice owing to the dispute. And now it is set to arrive in theatres on May 25. “It is a fantastic film and I want audience to see the film. It is about your credibility and what you stand for. So we fought our way. Abhishek is a legal person and he stood by me. Everyone forgets controversies and everyone is going to talk about the film and its quality that will speak for itself. “If its good people will talk about it and if they don’t like they would not talk about it. We think we have made a good film. Thank you media for support. We don’t have the luxury of time but we have the luxury of fantastic subject,” John said.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar recently announced on social media that the naval uniform that he wore in his 2016 film Rustom will be auctioned and the proceeds will be donated for the welfare and protection of animals. Akshay received the National Film Award for Best Actor at the 64th National Film Awards for his performance in the film, which also starred Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta and Arjan Bajwa. It was a period thriller based on the real life incident of Naval Officer K. M. Nanavati and businessman Prem Ahuja.

Last week, Akshay Kumar and Union Minister Rajnath Singh launched the app and website ‘BharatKeVeer’ where he lauded the Government of India for making his dream come true and providing a platform for everyone to help the next of the kin of slain soldiers financially. The portal is an IT based platform, with an objective to enable willing donors to contribute towards the family of a braveheart who sacrificed his/her life in line of duty. The amount so donated will be credited to the account of ‘Next of Kin’ of those Central Armed Police Force/Central Para Military Force soldiers. Kumar was the Guest of Honour during the function.

In addition to this Akshay Kumar is affliated with several good causes. He is currently filming for Kesari, a historical film based on the Battle of Saragarhi. There was a fire on the sets of the film in Satara last week. Akshay has spoken out in support of self defence for women on numerous occasions. He stated that women must be able to protect themselves against incidents of harassment and sexual misconduct based on a recent spate of crimes against them.

Blast on location in Wai as elaborate war sequence goes horribly wrong, cast and crew of period drama escape unhurt

Akshay Kumar has been shooting for Kesari, which is based on the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi, in Wai over the past four months. The unit of the period drama was in for a shock yesterday when a massive fire broke out on the location in the early evening.

A source says, “Anurag Singh [director] was filming a war sequence on location when one of the bombs, being used for the scene, exploded. Within a matter of seconds, the entire set was gutted. Most of the lighting equipment and cameras were lost in the fire. Fortunately, not a single person of the 100-member-strong unit was hurt.”

Kumar, who usually shoots through the day in Wai and flies back to Mumbai on his chartered chopper in the evenings, had left for the day around 3.30 pm. “None of the primary actors were required for the shoot. Akshay filmed his portions by late afternoon and then the director proceeded to can the war sequence with the additional artistes,” adds the source.

With the set now destroyed in the fire, the team has the challenge of recreating the Gulistan Fort — one of the key sites of the battle. “Since a 10-day shoot is yet to be covered, a new set will need to be recreated. Though it’s too early to say, the makers are now considering building the set in Film City in Mumbai.”

Confirming the news, the police officials of Satara said, “The fire department of Bhuinj and those of surrounding areas were alerted [about the incident]. By evening, the fire was brought under control.”

Akshay Kumar is one actor who has been constantly starring in socially relevant films for quite a while now. Be it ‘Jolly LLB 2’ or ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’, he went on to make the audiences rethink on a lot of social issues. And with his latest release ‘PadMan’ focussing on menstrual hygiene, he went on to garner a positive response from all over. The actor is always ready to go that extra mile for his role. The latest news reports cite that Akshay, who was shooting for his upcoming film ‘Kesari’ in Wai in Maharashtra’s Satara district, went onto injure his ribs while he was shooting the action-heavy climax sequence of the film.

Needless to say, he was reportedly advised complete rest but the actor refused to take rest and apparently retired to an accommodation in Wai despite the chopper being available at standby. According to reports, the actor will rest for a while and will then decide on the further schedule of shooting.

On the work front, the actor is awaiting the release of ‘Gold’ and Rajnikanth starrer ‘2.0’.

Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika may lock horns with Kumar’s Gold on I-Day weekend

Akshay Kumar may have slim chances of banking on holiday weekends in 2018. After pushing the release of Pad Man from the Republic Day weekend to make way for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, Kumar may not be able to entirely cash in on an Independence Day release for his next, Gold, either. The development stems from buzz that Kangana Ranaut is also eyeing the August weekend for her Rani Laxmibai biopic.

Pointing out that a take on the warrior makes for a fitting Independence Day release, a source says, “Principal shooting for Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi will wrap up by March. However, an elaborate post-production schedule will follow. There are opulent war sequences and fight scenes, hence, abundant VFX work will be done on the film. The makers estimate a minimum of three to four months to complete it.”

While Ranaut too would have preferred a solo release, the source says that the holiday weekend will permit sufficient room for both the films to flourish. Given that Gold is also a patriotic tale, inspired from India’s historic Olympic hockey win in 1948, it also makes for an appropriate I-Day release. While a trade analyst had alluded to the change in the release date, producer Kamal Jain had said that an official announcement hadn’t been made.

Kumar to pull off high-octane sequences involving sword fighting, Gatka and artillery for Kesari’s elaborate two-month Wai schedule

Akshay Kumar
Akshay Kumar

With his recent outings edging towards social issues, fans of Akshay Kumar have missed watching him pack in a punch on screen. Fortunately, they will be treated to his bravado yet again in Kesari, which will see the actor slip into the role of Havildar Ishar Singh, the leader of the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi. The Khiladi has often put his martial arts skill on display for cinephiles, but he will now be seen pulling off fight sequences involving traditional artillery, sword fighting and Gatka.

The unit of the Kumar and Karan Johar co-production has already set base in the picturesque Wai, Satara, where the large forts of Saragarhi and Gulistan can be recreated. A source reveals that the schedule is crucial, given that filming the action sequences before summer arrives is essential. Talking about the Lawrence Woodward-choreographed stunts, the source adds, “The war sequences are currently being designed. Most of them will feature Akshay, so the action is being created while keeping his physicality in mind. The fight sequences primarily involve the use of traditional artillery. Although the hand-to-hand combat scenes are few, the team is contemplating roping in pehelwans from the akharas of Punjab to lend authenticity. Their presence on set will also ensure that Akshay’s demeanour is aligned with his character.”

Akshay Kumar in Kesari
Akshay Kumar in Kesari

Professional Gatka trainers, says the source, are also being appointed to train Kumar in the form. “Since it is the oldest form of self-defence that Sikhs resorted to, it is fitting that the makers showcase it in the film. Akshay has allotted 15 days for training. It involves the use of wooden sticks. It will be mixed with sword fighting,” says the source, adding that a unique pressure point striking technique is also being included in the film. “The team is also sourcing Indian weaponry like gandasas and bhujs for the elaborate scenes.”

While the actor can pull off stunts with panache, the source suggests that replicating ease in traditional action methods is difficult. “Further, the scenes also involve the use of heavy costumes, which can make them difficult to pull off. Wai offers the space that a shoot of this nature requires. The set is currently being created.”
Kumar will join the unit after wrapping up promotional work for his upcoming film, Pad Man, in mid-February. He will be stationed in the mountainous region for two months to wrap up shooting in a start-to-finish schedule.
