As reality drama India’s Next Superstar receives flak for allowing Angela Krislinzki as contestant, those involved say it’s ‘about making it big’

While it was meant to pave the way for better roles, a supporting act in the recently released 1921 has turned out to be a thorn for Angela Krislinzki. Cinephiles heading to watch the Vikram Bhatt venture, featuring Zareen Khan and Karan Kundra, were quick to notice Krislinzki’s familiar face. The Polish model, they realised, is also a participant on the reality show, India’s Next Superstar, supposedly judging “newcomers”. It is now learnt that Krislinzki has several gigs to her credit, with her debut dating to 2008.

Portals were quick to slam the talent hunt show for promoting an existing Bollywood artiste on a platform that was supposed to give “fresh faces” an opportunity. However, casting director Mukesh Chhabra, who apparently scouted for the participants across 20 cities following auditions, finds little merit in the criticism. Talking about the format of the show, judged by Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty, he says, “We have shortlisted people on talent showcased in auditions. Krislinzki was brought aboard after we found merit in her craft.”

Asserting that an artiste playing smaller roles has the authority to better her prospects in the industry, Chhabra adds, “The concept of the show is to launch people in lead roles, so I don’t see an issue here,” he says, his statements strongly contradicting that of Shetty, who had reportedly said that the show was indeed for “newcomers.” “I think the channel would be in a better position to answer this,” Chhabra says dismissingly. Krislinzki reiterated Chhabra’s claim, stating, “The show isn’t for debutantes alone. I don’t want to do small roles and will work hard to enter the big league. This is a brilliant platform, one that allows me to hone my skills.” Channel Star India refused to comment.

Who is Angela Krislinzki?
Polish-Indian model Krislinzki was seen in the first season of the reality show, MTV Splitsvilla. This was followed by turns in Telugu and Tamil cinema, where she was seen in item numbers and smaller roles. More recently, she featured in the acclaimed 2017 Telugu/Kannada film, Rogue. In the Bollywood film, 1921, Krislinzki appears as the antagonist.

In April last year, Krislinzki had also courted attention for her statements about Hrithik Roshan, who she featured with in at least two commercials. When she referred to him as a mentor friend, Roshan took to Twitter to question: “My dear lady, who are you and why are u lying (sic).” Krislinzki later apologised asserting that she merely implied he inspires her.

As first reported in mid-day, Padmaavat makers cite Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan as precedent to overturn state governments’ ban

It was a victory of freedom of expression as the Supreme Court yesterday cleared Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat for release, by staying the ban imposed by the governments of several states including Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, the bench said it is the duty of states to maintain law and order and that the creative content is an inseparable aspect of Article 19 (1), freedom of speech and expression.

As told to mid-day (January 18 edition), the producers’ counsel cited the example of Prakash Jha’s caste-reservation drama Aarakshan (2011), which was banned in certain states until the SC overturned the decision. Using that as precedent, the legal team argued that once the Censor Board has certified a movie, no state can ban it. It also argued that the makers had complied with the changes recommended by the Censor Board.

For an industry that largely shied away from commenting on the Padmaavat issue through Bhansali’s months-long battle, it welcomed the SC decision with open arms. Shabana Azmi, one of the few actors to initiate a petition asking PM Narendra Modi to offer protection to Deepika Padukone, said, “I welcome the decision. But there remains the unresolved matter of no action being taken against those who placed a bounty on Deepika’s head. Immediate action needs to be taken against these criminal elements so as to send out a clear signal to the country that the dignity of women is supreme and neither abusive language nor violent threats will go unpunished.”

Director Hansal Mehta reiterated how the banning of a film that has been cleared by the CBFC in the first place, is unconstitutional. “It’s a good sign that the Supreme Court has upheld the decision. The entire team of Padmaavat can heave a sigh of relief.”

Raza Murad, who plays Jalaluddin Khilji in the magnum opus, described it as a “victory of democracy.” “I think true change can be brought about when the government deals with people who create nuisance with an iron hand.”

Actor Maniesh Paul, who has made his singing debut with the song “Harjai” along with Romanian TV presenter Iulia Vantur, says superstar Salman Khan has been very supportive of whatever he does

maniesh paul

Actor Maniesh Paul, who has made his singing debut with the song “Harjai” along with Romanian TV presenter Iulia Vantur, says superstar Salman Khan has been very supportive of whatever he does.

“Salman sir has been really supportive every time in whatever I have done. Yes, I had a song (in mind) and generally spoke to him and he said, ‘Yes, you should sing professionally. Why not’ … He’s bhaijaan and he is always there in whatever I do. He is very supportive.

“I do share a lot of things with him and he is always there for me,” Maniesh told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

“Harjai”, presented by T-Series, is composed and penned by Sachin Gupta.

Talking about his equation with Iulia, he said: “Singing with Iulia was amazing. I think Iulia is a great singer. The notes she can touch goes really high. It’s amazing.”

Maniesh says recording a song with Iulia, who is rumoured to be in a relationship with the “Dabangg” star, was a “lot of fun”.

How did he come up with an idea to come out with a single?

“I used to like singing. I used to sing for my school and college. I won a lot of competitions there… I never thought taking it up professionally, but yes, I thought why not give it a try. Everybody has been saying that I should sing. So I was like ‘Okay, here I am’. I am not a trained singer. I sing passionately,” he added.

abhishek kapoor

Abhishek Kapoor successfully launched Farhan Akhtar and Sushant Singh Rajput as film actors. The director, whose next movie “Kedarnath” will mark Sara Ali Khan’s debut, says he chases his characters instead of actors.

“Newcomers have an infectious energy and unpredictability and give the audience a surprise. Having said that, it’s not that I mind working with established actors provided they are as excited about portraying the characters that I would like to see brought to life. I can only chase my characters, not my actors. Sometimes it is not possible to do both,” Kapoor said in a statement to IANS.

Sara is the daughter of actor Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, and her debut is much-awaited with “Kedarnath”, a love story set against the holy temple town of Kedarnath.

Kapoor, whose maternal uncle is veteran actor Jeetendra, said: “I have gone through my share of struggles and have understood that it does not matter whether you start as an ‘insider’ or as an ‘outsider’. What matters is who you are and what you bring to the table in terms of your creativity and your work ethic.”

He said his journey to make films was his own choice.

Often one to refrain from being spotted with a particular camp, Kapoor said: “When I was growing up, my mother’s brother Jeetendra was a major Hindi movie star, and we do know a lot of people from the movie business. But as with everyone, the decision to be in films and my journey in film was my own, and has been a fairly challenging one too.

“Knowing people is not an automatic all-access pass to success. Very early on, I saw a lot of failure, so any sense of entitlement I may have had about my place in the business, was quickly knocked out of me.”

Having directed “Rock On!!”, “Kai Po Che” and “Fitoor” earlier, Kapoor is now looking forward to “Kedarnath”.

On how the film happened, he said: “In my house, spirituality has been a guiding principle. I am a big believer of Shivji and the cosmic forces that oversee us.There are two kinds of people in the spiritual world. Those who are believers and and those who are seekers. A believer has trust in the universe and a seeker is one who isn’t, but is trying to gain that trust.

“I have made many trips to Vaishnodevi, and I have seen people trekking up mountains on these pilgrimages, on these arduous trips to find God. What I have observed is that on their journeys to seek God, they usually experience God at some point along the way.”

The flash floods that wrought death and destruction in the Hindu pilgrim destination Kedarnath in 2013, left an indelible impact on Kapoor.

“The incident of the floods in 2013 also could not leave my mind, due to the stories that came out of it — devastating and remarkable in equal measure. I had to go ahead and develop a film set against that backdrop. I believe it is one of the most important stories I can tell for modern India,” Kapoor said, without divulging anything more on the movie.

vikram bhatt

Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt is looking forward to launch musical drama “Spotlight 2”, and says the story focuses on the “loneliness that stardom brings along with the glitz and glamour in the life of a superstar”.

Viu, a video-on-demand platform by Vuclip, on Thursday announced the launch of “Spotlight 2” following the success of “Spotlight”, read a statement.

Presented in association with writer and director Bhatt, the theme of the franchise is a running series that captures the rise, fall and resurrection of a music superstar.

“When ‘Spotlight’ was a success, I was confident I will make another one. ‘Spotlight 2’ chronicles a musician’s journey as he falls to fame, and then, strives to make a comeback. A story that encapsulates the loneliness that stardom brings along with the glitz and glamour in the life of a superstar,” Bhatt said.

“And the story is very apt for the digital platform. Today, the first screen of preference is the cell phone, so it was only natural that I present this franchise to the audience on the web,” he added.

The series is being directed by Siddhant Sachdeva and will feature Karan V Grover along with Aditi Arya and Ruhi Singh. It will feature more than seven originally composed tracks brought to life by Harish Sanganay, Ankit Shah and other popular artists. The show goes live on Viu from January 26.

Manasi Sapre, Head of Programming, Viu India said: “With ‘Spotlight 2’, we celebrate the great journey we have taken on with Vikram Bhatt. We are excited to launch the Spotlight franchise and in the upcoming months, you will see a lot more original shows from Viu that will surely going to excite the audience.”

The 13-episode series will mark the launch of the twelfth original series by Viu.

In the wake of sexual misconduct allegations, Golden Globe award-winning actor James Franco is reportedly reaching out to his ex-girlfriends to clear the air.

According to a magazine, the 39-year-old actor has been calling his former girlfriends for the last month to know about his behaviour at the time of the relationship. “He knows this was coming and is trying to get ahead of the story,” said a source.

During a recent appearance on a talk show, the actor addressed the sexual harassment allegations made by a number of women on Twitter. He said, “There are people that need to be heard. I have my own side of this story, but I believe in these people that have been underrepresented getting their stories out enough that I will hold back things that I could say, just because I believe in it that much.”

ranbirFor a long time now, stories about Mahira Khan and Ranbir Kapoor dating each other have been making rounds. Their closeness grew when they were shooting together last year. Their regular public outings added fuel to the fire.

Later, when Mahira was being slammed in her home country Pakistan for smoking and wearing revealing clothes, RK stood in her defense and gave his piece of mind to the media and the people. He lending his support for Mahira then made the speculations even more stronger.

Even though none of the actors chose to speak about their relationship, their actions proved that there’s smoething brewing between the two. Their fans too were happy to see them together!

However, what Mahira recently said about love and she being in love or not, has shattered her fans’ dreams!

Recently, during a media interaction, the Pakistani actress was asked “if she is in love”, to this she replied, “No, actually.” She added, “No, I have been, I was. Now, I realise that love is peace. Love is when you are with somebody and it’s okay and you don’t have to talk. Their presence is important.”

akshay-kumar-sonamAkshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor along with their team of “Padman” had organised an “Innovation Conclave” to honor all the innovators of India who have helped the society with their nature friendly innovations.

So, during the event, Sonam was asked about a particular invention, that was an automatic cooking machine, if she loved it or not.

To this Sonam replied that she doesn’t know to cook and even her mother didn’t know to cook. But, her father, Anil Kapoor always encouraged her mother that it’s not your job to be in the kitchen.

“My mother does not know to cook. So my father used to tell her That you are my partner you help us you don’t have to go to the kitchen and cook.”

Sonam further added, “I can’t cook but Akshay Sir can cook.”

That’s when Akshay turned to Sonam and her: “Sonam I would like to ask you. Are you getting married this year?”

Surprised by Akki’s question, Sonam was all smiles and then he continued and said that: “If your are getting married this year then I can buy you this machine and give it to you as your wedding gift or maybe give it for your husband so that he can cook for you.”

And Sonam was left speechless! But, she did put up a smile and nodded.

padmavatFor a long time now, the team of “Padmaavat” has been having a tough time batting the odds to get a smooth release for their film.

This morning, the Supreme Court’s judgement came as a big relief for the makers and the team. The SC stayed the operation of orders banning the release of the film “Padmaavat” by the Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana governments.

Staying the “notifications and orders” banning the release of the controversial film by the three states, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilklar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said that the remaining states will also not issue orders banning the screening of the film.

Referring to its earlier judgement, the court said that it was incumbent upon the state governments to ensure the maintanence of law and order.

The court order came on the plea by the producers of the film — Bhansali Productions and Viacom18 Motion Pictures — challenging the ban on the screening of the film by the Gujarat, Rajasthan nand Haryana governments.
