After making beautiful appearances at the red carpet of Cannes Film Festival, Bollywood divas- Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor have returned to the Bay, after spelling their magic at the French Riviera. Along with these stunning beauties, Pakistani actress Mahira Khan also made a mark at the prestigious festival.

Mahira Khan made her Cannes debut this year and chose vibrant colours to represent her brand. The actress walked the red carpet for cosmetics giant L’Oreal Paris. To end her Cannes trip, the Raees actress wore a pastel saree with a ruffled border, black sleeveless blouse with diamonds cut on it. Hair tied in a fish-tail braid, she looked ethereal.

She captioned the picture as, “I don’t know how kids these days post so many pictures so quickly.. this is killin’ me! (in a good way, in a good way..) Thank you @menahelandmehreen @alieljewellers P.S this was from last evening.”

Earlier, she had worn a black off-shoulder dress after the ensemble she was due to wear got stuck at the customs and didn’t turn up in time. “I’m nervous,” she wrote before making her red carpet debut, but her confident demeanour was a head-turner at the gala, where she and Sonam walked one after another. Mahira dedicated her representation at Cannes as an “ode to the people I have loved so much…. and have inspired me since I was a little girl. Starting from my Ama to Minaal and Rooha… down to all my girls back home in Pakistan”.

The actress excitingly had taken to her Instagram account to make her Cannes announcement. Adding some humour to her post, she had written, “My name is Cannes and I’m not a (sic).”

Not only Indian Cinema but even Pakistan’s film industry is mourning the tragic and untimely death of actress Sridevi

Mahira Khan
Mahira Khan, Adnan Siddiqui, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and others mourn Sridevi’s demise.

Pakistani stars like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Mahira Khan and Ali Zafar on Sunday condoled the sudden demise of veteran actress Sridevi, saying that she will live in their hearts and memories forever.

“So grateful to have grown up and lived in the times of Sridevi. Thank you for the movies, thank you for the magic. You shall live on forever… Great artistes… we cry for them without ever really knowing them, we mourn them because they helped us know ourselves,” Mahira tweeted on Sunday.

People from across the globe started their Sunday on a sad note with the news of the sudden demise of cine icon Sridevi, 54, due to cardiac arrest in Dubai. She passed away on Saturday. Sridevi was in Dubai to attend the marriage function of actress Sonam Kapoor’s cousin Mohit Marwah, along with husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi.

Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who is facing a backlash for singing the song titled “Ishtehar” — a soulful rendition — for Indian film production “Welcome To New York”, also condoled her death. “My condolences to Boney Kapoorji and the Kapoor family. Deeply saddened to lose an icon like Srideviji,” Rahat tweeted.

The actress is remembered for her performance in some of the iconic Bollywood films like “Mr. India”, “Nagina”, “Sadma”, “ChalBaaz”, “Chandni”, “Khuda Gawah”, among many others in different Indian languages. The Padma Shri recipient, who made a comeback to Bollywood in 2012 with “English Vinglish” after a long break of 15 years, was last seen in “Mom” in 2017.

Her “Mom” co-star Sajal Aly also wrote: “Lost my mom again”. Sajal was seen as her daughter in “Mom”.

Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui, who played her onscreen husband in “Mom”, wrote: “Life is so unpredictable. A lady with not just extreme talent but also a beautiful soul, Sri Devi Kapoor leaves us heavy-hearted. So many memories attached while shooting ‘Mom’ with her, just a couple days back I met her at Boney Kapoor’s nephew’s wedding and who would have thought that it is the last time I am seeing her. “I am still in a state of shock and out of words to describe my feeling! May her soul rest in eternal peace hereafter.”

Actor-singer Ali Zafar said: “You have left us with great memories of joy and tears.” Sharing an image with the Indian actress on Instagram, Saba Qamar wrote: “R.I.P legend. We’ll miss you.”

Actor Imran Abbas was in shock. “The ‘Sadma’ of losing this ultimate superstar is heart-wrenching. Her smile, beauty, acting, aura and those ‘Nigahen’ will be missed forever,” wrote the actor, who has featured in Bollywood projects like “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” and “Creature”.

Mawra Hocane also said that Sridevi will “always have our hearts, grateful to have met the legend that you’ll always be”. Her mortal remains are expected to be flown to Mumbai on a chartered flight on Sunday evening for the last rites, which will reportedly be held tomorrow morning at Pawan Hans crematorium.

There have had been rumours about Ranbir Kapoor and Pakistani actress Mahira Khan being a ‘thing’ together. Latest, we hear is that they have parted ways and are no longer together

Ranbir and Mahira
Ranbir Kapoor and Mahira Khan’s pictures that went viral in October last year.

There have had been rumours about Ranbir Kapoor and Pakistani actress Mahira Khan being a ‘thing’ together. Latest, we hear is that they have parted ways and are no longer together. What added fuel to the fire were their ‘leaked’ pictures of smoking together from New York which went viral and sparked something more than just friendship. However, a latest report in DNA says that Ranbir and Mahira’s relationship has fizzled out. Apparently, they decided to call off their alleged relationship just before New Year but will remain cordial considering the kind of person they are.

A source told the daily, “Their friendship has fizzled out. Ranbir and Mahira will always remain cordial but that’s because of the kind of people they are.” What could have triggered this move according to the publication is their pictures going viral in October 2017, in which, according to the moral police of social media, the ‘Raees’ actress was dressed ‘inappropriately’.

It all began when a noted from Hindi cinema introduced Khan to the ‘Rockstar’ actor, they hit it off immediately. Later, they kept collecting air miles to meet each other at foreign locations of New York, Dubai, and London. They even attended an award function together in Dubai and a video of theirs fighting like ‘lovers’ had also surfaced the Internet.

In one of the recent interviews of Mahira Khan, she was asked if she was in love. To which, she said, “No, actually.” She then added, “No, I have been, I was. Now, I realise that love is peace. Love is when you are with somebody and it’s okay and you don’t have to talk. Their presence is important.” Was she indicating towards hers and Ranbir’s fizzled relationship?

On the other hand, the grapevine is abuzz with Ranbir Kapoor’s growing proximity with young actress Alia Bhatt. The latter is often spotted at the former’s residence. Alia has openly confessed her feelings for Ranbir as a fan and is glad to know him more through their film ‘Brahmastra’ by Ranbir’s close friend Ayan Mukerji. They brought in the New Years in Israel together, where they had gone for their film’s recee. Speaking fondly of Alia, Ranbir has said that the ‘Highway’ actress is the brightest actress of Gen Now.

ranbirFor a long time now, stories about Mahira Khan and Ranbir Kapoor dating each other have been making rounds. Their closeness grew when they were shooting together last year. Their regular public outings added fuel to the fire.

Later, when Mahira was being slammed in her home country Pakistan for smoking and wearing revealing clothes, RK stood in her defense and gave his piece of mind to the media and the people. He lending his support for Mahira then made the speculations even more stronger.

Even though none of the actors chose to speak about their relationship, their actions proved that there’s smoething brewing between the two. Their fans too were happy to see them together!

However, what Mahira recently said about love and she being in love or not, has shattered her fans’ dreams!

Recently, during a media interaction, the Pakistani actress was asked “if she is in love”, to this she replied, “No, actually.” She added, “No, I have been, I was. Now, I realise that love is peace. Love is when you are with somebody and it’s okay and you don’t have to talk. Their presence is important.”

While Mahira Khan has been promoting her upcoming film, Verna, the movie won’t release in Pakistan. It has been banned by the censor board due to its “controversial subject”. The Raees actor took to social media to express her disappointment. “Tonight I realize how powerful artists are, not those in power. We are. Why else do we get banned?

Why else do our films pose a threat to them?

In this game of power — we will always win. Art/love/truth always does! #PowerDiGame #verna (sic).” She also wrote, “May the power of the voices of the people be stronger than a few in positions of power.”

Pakistani actress Mahira Khan’s upcoming film ‘Verna’ has reportedly been banned by Pakistan’s Censor Board for allegedly portraying rape and violence. In the film, Mahira plays a rape survivor who is out to seek justice. The film stars Mahira Khan and Haroon Shahid in leading roles. Produced by Shoaib Mansoor, the film was scheduled to release on November 17, 2017.

Mahira Khan's film 'Verna' banned in Pakistan for rape scene?
Mahira Khan in ‘Verna’ poster

While speaking to Images, Pakistan CBFC Chief Mobashir Hasan said, “We are looking into the ‘unanimous objections’ raised by a panel of CBFC on Verna after the preview under the relevant laws.”

He added, “The Board will review the decision if the producer files an appeal against the decision of the panel. If [there is no’ appeal from the producer then the decision of the panel will be final and implemented.” The website also quotes Mobashir Hasan as saying that ‘Verna’ team has 15 days to file an appeal, or else the Board’s decision will be final.

The report further states that according to ‘Verna’ producer Shoaib Mansoor’s official press statement, the director has appealed to the CBFC ‘for the urgent relief of Verna.’

The reports of Mahira Khan’s ‘Verna’ being banned has left people outraged. Twitter users took to the micro-blogging website to voice their opinion on the subject. Here are some reactions:

#Verna ban is preposterous, the movie is very timely IMO and banning it is a huge blow to our industry thats still trying to find its feet.
CBFC is repeatedly scaring potential movie producers from investing in quality content #futureseemsbleak

— Jawad Ali Khan (@Jawadaay) November 15, 2017

So according to the Censor Board having rape prevalent in your country is not a problem but talking about it is? How about banning the filth movies that objectify women instead of banning one that empowers them. This is insanity #Verna

— Laila (@fizakhawar) November 14, 2017

The ban on #Verna is itself a rape of growth of pakistani film industry, Authorities are banning the movie instead of controling the crime. I strongly condemn the act & m standing with @ShoManOfficial
I demand #Verna should be released on its release date
RT if u agree with me pic.twitter.com/SiiH5BkxrK

— Haseeb Ur Rehman (@ItsHaseeb_) November 14, 2017

Movies promoting violence against women are okay? e.g. #ChainAyeNa but #Verna is problematic because it talks about a ‘social taboo’ aka rape? If this is what’s happening at the censor board, it’s worrying. Also want to know how many female official members does the board have?

— Quratulain (@quratulain_s) November 14, 2017

I question to CBFC,
What message are you sending when you ban a film that stood up against violence?
You let the powerful win again.#Verna

— Aftab Iqbal (@_AftabIqbal) November 14, 2017

When they can’t bear the truth, they try to destroy it. Banning a movie like Verna is tantamount to destroying the truth. Truth be told as it. #Verna#VernaBanhttps://t.co/CVgRUZwlSY

— Muhammad Murad (@MuradKanrani) November 14, 2017

Ban on #Verna is imposed to make those powerful people happy who don’t want masses to know what they do to maintain their hold on public

— Khurram Zia Khan (@KhurramZiaKhan) November 14, 2017

So #Verna has been banned by the usual idiots on the Islamabad censor board who appar think topic (rape) should not be talked about. Was cleared by Sindh. Going into full board appeal today.

— Hasan Zaidi (@hyzaidi) November 14, 2017

Maybe it was banned for not having enough item songs, vulgar dialogues, and other cheap titillation. Such a mature content seems to have offended a few… #Verna

— LubNaa (@LubnaSabir1) November 14, 2017

Standup for #Verna

— Adeeb Ahmad (@adeeb_ahmad1) November 14, 2017

Its just stupid..Mahira Khan and Shoaib Mansoor are the two people reviving your film industry at Intl Level and you end up bringing them down again and again #Verna

— Imran Khan #Verna in 2 days (@imran_vk) November 15, 2017

Censor board can ban #Verna in Pakistan.
Bt they can’t stop d wave it hv already created.

.@davidakaye#censorship in Pakistan touching heights. Censorship Board bans movie #Verna on the issue of rape. Perhaps they believe rapes are not crimes #VernaBan#FoE

— ھارÙÂ?ÙÂ? بÙÂ?ÙÂ?ÚÂ? (@advertbalcha) November 15, 2017

The speculated ban on #Verna has done exactly what the film makers wanted to do – people have started talking about rape & gender injustices. Power di game cannot silence people!

— Harinder (Heer) (@harinder_virk) November 15, 2017

In many rape cases the state turns a blind eye and sides with the rapist. #Verna is highlighting this very important issue #VernaBan

— Roshaneh Zafar (@RoshanehZafar) November 15, 2017

The cast & crew of #Verna must be proud. Only master pieces get banned in Pakistan. @TheMahiraKhan very proud of you and I hope you know regardless I’m watching this movie in cinema

— Shahbaz Taseer (@ShahbazTaseer) November 15, 2017

Parading women naked, raping 3 years old, raping women’s dead bodies is okay but the theme of film #Verna that is trying to address this issue is not ok. Are we a shamless nation. Uncut Verna shd b passed. @Razarumi@MaryamNSharif@Gulalai_Ismail

— Dr. Fouzia Saeed (@FouziaSaeed) November 15, 2017

#Verna banned cos a PM’s.son is shown as a rapist.. a pathetic move by censor board definitely..
On the other hand was just thinking
why our movie makers would never show an army captain raping a doctor somewhere in balochistan…?!

— Amira. Yunis (@ay_yunis) November 15, 2017

Ban on #verna needs to be lifted.Women can no longer be suppressed by power. These issues need to be talked about #UnbanVerna@TheMahiraKhan@HaroonsMusic@ShoManOfficial

“#Verna is about violence against women. Did they expect Mahira to dance with Haroon in a wedding to raise awareness about this subject? Or do they honestly expect a film about violence against women to be shown without showing violence against women?” https://t.co/eu1t6rS2ld

— Mahwash Ajaz (@mahwashajaz_) November 14, 2017

what the hell is on the minds of these people banning #Verna and promoted content like Mehrunisa V Lub U? do they really want to progress? is this how you treat good content and a masterpiece. Team doesnt deserve this @TheMahiraKhan

A month ago, pictures of Mahira Khan smoking with Ranbir Kapoor outside a London restaurant surfaced online and they went heavily viral. She was slut-shamed for smoking publicly and wearing a white short backless dress. Both Ranbir and Mahira gave their respective statements about this matter. On one side, where Mahira termed her meeting with Ranbir as “personal”, Ranbir came in defence of Mahira stating it “unfair” for the way she was being “judged” on social media. There were also rumours of the two allegedly dating each other post they appeared together on the red carpet of a Dubai-based award show. A month after Pakistani actress Mahira Khan and Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor’s smoking photos went viral and created furore on social media, Mahira has now finally broken her silence on the controversy. In September, Ranbir Kapoor and Mahira Khan were spotted together in New York and the photos of the two went viral, triggering dating rumours. Soon after the photographs went viral, a lot of people started slamming Mahira for smoking and wearing a short dress.

Now, Mahira Khan has finally spoken out and given an epic response to her haters. According to reports, Mahira Khan gave her opinion on the issue at the trailer launch of her upcoming film ‘Verna’ in Pakistan.

Mahira Khan said, “Through the times of turbulence, through the joys, through the ups and downs, through the mistakes we make and all the success we get, let nobody… nobody’s opinion define who you are. And if anybody defines who you are, let it be yourself. Because including me and all the women out there, we’re all worth it!”

Mahira also spoke to TV channel SAMAA TV and said, “I am a very careful person otherwise. People ask me that I do not do this in films (probably she meant smoking), I say I do not want to. Why should I do anything to show the world?”

She further clarified that meeting Ranbir Kapoor was a personal thing. “It is my personal life and it is very normal for a boy and girl to hang out. This one incident has taught me a lot.”

Popular Pakistani actors like Ali Zafar, Humaima Malick, Mawra and Urwa Hocane lent support to Mahira Khan. Ranbir Kapoor, too, issued a statement following the furore over the pictures. He issued a statement that read, “I’ve gotten to know Mahira in a personal capacity over the last few months. She is somebody who I admire and respect, for her achievements and even more for the person she is. It is very unfair the way she is being judged and spoken about. What is also sad is the inequality in judgment just because she is a woman. I request you to stop the negativity and move on with your beautiful god gifted lives. Peace and love.”
