Indian cinema caters to the entire world; public has a huge appetite for our powerhouse and B-town has some wonderful people who make some stellar movies that don’t always compete with a Karan Johar movie at the box office, but leaves its mark on the world map. Film festivals are an amazing platform for such critically acclaimed work and here are some of the Indian movies which are making their mark and shining bright at the Toronto film festival:

1. The Brawler – Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Mukkabaaz’ tells the true story of a boxer who is trying to make his ends meet and also follow his passion to make it to the Indian National Boxing Championship.

2. Pahuna: The Little Visitors – Produced by our ‘desi’ girl Priyanka Chopra, the movie has received a standing ovation at the festival. The movie follows the lives of three Nepalese kids who make their way through Sikkim in search of their parents.

3. Village Rockstars: This one also has the flavours of the North East. The story tells the tale of a 10 year old girl who harbours a simple dream of making her own rock band.

4. Omerta- This is the brainchild of Hansal Mehta and tells the stark tale of Omar Saeed Sheikh, the man responsible behind the kidnapping and killing of famous journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002. Rajkummar Rao is the lead so you have no doubts about the credibility.

5.Azmaish: A Journey Through The Subcontinent – This is a unique combination of a Pakistani director and Indian actor Kalki Koechlin. The movie has Kalki interview the commoners in both the countries and draw parallel of how life is in both the places.

6. The Hungry- This is Bornila Chatterjee’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Titus Adronicus’. Starring Naseeruddin Shah and Tisca Chopra, the movie tells the tale of greed, revenge and murder.

And when this happens, ‘Cheap Thrills’ becomes Sasti Masti, Harry Potter becomes Hari Puttar, Tyrion Lannister becomes Chotu Mama, and Jon Snow becomes Jagannath, ‘Hangover’ becomes ‘Oh Raat Sasuri’ and ‘Avatar’ becomes ‘Kasam Pandora Maiyya Ki’. Well, for those who still didn’t get the gist, we are talking about hilarious Bhojpuri titles, and other regional translations. Having said that, we don’t think there’s anyone who will disagree when we say that South Indian songs are one of the trippiest and peppy dance numbers, you just cannot stop yourself from grooving to it. And ‘Jimmiki Kammal’ from Mohanlal starrer ‘Velipadinte Pusthakam’ is one such number. Unless you were living under a rock, you would have definitely heard this song and slyly danced on it too. Well, you are not the only one who is tripping on it, American talk show host Jimmy Kimmel seems to love this song too. Here’s the official video of the song.

The ‘Purge’ franchise has earned a lot of flak for its bold moves but gained a lot of success, thanks to its extensive blasphemous use of political allegory in the movies. James DeMonaco is coming up with ‘Purge: The Island’, the next instalment in the series and the best part about this is that it will pick up right from where the first one ended. More like a prequel to what actually happened before the purge night. This movie will tell the story of the first ever purge, which could mean more violence.

You know what’s even better? Monaco is also working on a TV show which will be set during seven years after the first purge. The series tackles larger issues like social and class division in a very dark manner. For those of you who are not familiar to the whole gruesome concept of the series, ‘Purge’ is set in a hypothetical world, America namely, where an annual ‘purge’ night is held. This means that all criminal activities are legal and allowed in a 12 hour window and the government doesn’t intervenes.

Well, the revised version of 90’s favourite song ‘Oonchi Hai Building’ from ‘Judwaa 2′ is finally out and people seem to love it. It’s just been three days and the song has garnered over 10 million views on Youtube and is still trending.

Just like the original tune, the song is sung and composed by Anu Malik with Neha Kakkar joining the team, making us all nostalgic about Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Rambha. Man, that was one hell of a song and it still makes us groove.

Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu star in the latest version and are damn entertaining.
