Sharmila-Tagore“His death has still not sunk in,” says Sharmila Tagore on the demise of her “Aa Gale Lag Jaa” and “My Love” co-star Shashi Kapoor, whom she describes as the “most handsome man” she had ever seen.

“I don’t think I enjoyed working with any co-star as much as I did with Shashi Kapoor… His death has still not sunk in. Even as I’ve been busy with various things during the past few days, my mind has been going back to all the wonderful times I shared with Shashi,” Sharmila said.

The actress recounted her special bond with Shashi, who died on Monday. He was 79.

“While I shared only a professional rapport with my other co-stars, with Shashi I also socialized. We did meet over dinner and drinks. And it was always a pleasure to meet Shashi and his really wonderful wife Jennifer.

“They complemented each other perfectly. Seeing Shashi and Jennifer together was so gratifying. I don’t think Shashi ever got over her death. It broke him and turned him reckless about his life. He became suicidal. It was sad to see him let himself go… I still remember how handsome he was. My God! He was the most handsome man I had seen.”
Her first meeting with Shashi was when he visited the location of her first Hindi film “Kashmir Ki Kali”.
“We were shooting the song ‘Isharon isharon mein’ with Shashi’s brother Shammi. I couldn’t concentrate on my romantic poses with Shammi.

“The director Shakti Samanta had to ask Shashi to leave. The funny thing was, before I could confess I was a fan, Shashi started telling me he was a fan of my work, having seen me in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Apur Sansar’. That charm completely won women over,” she said.

Sharmila said she counted Shashi among her close friends.

“We got a lot of opportunity to work and spend time together as most of our films were shot outside Mumbai over a lengthy period of time. I remember we were all together for ‘My Love’ in Nairobi. Likewise, my other films with Shashi which were shot in places as far-flung as Rajasthan and Canada.

“I remember we were shooting ‘Paap Aur Punya’ in Rajasthan. Shashi’s children and my son Saif were all there. Saif, who was very small, became very fond of his Shashi uncle. In a sequence where Shashi was being hung by a noose by the villain, Saif, unknown to the camera and crew, toddled up to the villain and bit him for hurting his favourite Shashi uncle.”

She says his charms worked with the young and old alike.

“We did a lot of films together, some of them like ‘New Delhi Times’, ‘Aamne Samne’ and ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’ were good, some really awful. Not too many of them worked at the box office, which is a pity, because among all my co-stars, it’s Shashi I enjoyed working with the most.”

Kapoor was born as Balbir Raj but his mother did not like the name and began calling him Shashi – or moonbeam – since he was obsessed with the moon and spent long hours watching it

Do you know how Shashi Kapoor got his name? Kapoor was born as Balbir Raj but his mother did not like the name and began calling him Shashi – or moonbeam – since he was obsessed with the moon and spent long hours watching it. Shashi Kapoor was born to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Kapoor on March 18, 1938 in then Calcutta. He was given the name Balbir Raj – in keeping with the Kapoor family tradition of adopting the word ‘Raj’ (or ‘king’) in its many variations. But Ramsarni was less than happy with the name Balbir and thus changed it to Shashi.

This nugget of information extracted from the book “Shashi Kapoor: The Householder, The Star”, written by Aseem Chhabra and published by Rupa Publications last year. Shashi Kapoor died in Mumbai yesterday at the age of 79 due to a kidney problem.

The book also says how Raj Kapoor used to call his brother ‘taxi’. Raj Kapoor used the word ‘taxi’ to describe his brother when he was desperately trying to get dates from Shashi for “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”.

While actors were queueing up to play the lead role in the film, Raj strongly felt that only Shashi could play his younger self in this somewhat autobiographical tale. So he looked at his brother¿s schedule and coolly appropriated all the dates he had given other filmmakers. His frenetic lifestyle, which made a car his semi-permanent address, led to the nickname, “taxi’, the book says.

According to Chhabra, Jennifer Kendal Kapoor maintained a strict watch over her husband’s diet when she was alive. “This is the reason why, unlike the other Kapoor men, Shashi Kapoor stayed slim for the longest time. It was also why a lot of those around Shashi would feel sorry for him,” he writes.

“I remember, when I worked with him, I would look at his food and say, ‘What’s wrong with you, Shashi Uncle?'” he quotes Neetu Singh Kapoor as telling him. “One orange he would have and thoda sa dahi (a little bit of yogurt). That was his lunch. And he would say, ‘My wife will kill me if I eat anything more!'”

Chhabra says the early works of the 1960s and 1970s established Shashi Kapoor as a star of Hindi cinema, and then, several key films formed a part of his legacy. “There is no actual count of how many movies he acted in. Many – such as ‘Sammy and Rosie Get Laid’, ‘Jinnah’ and ‘Side Streets’ – never got theatre releases in India, and a few – such as ‘Siddhartha’ and ‘Heat and Dust’ – have been forgotten today. But the landmark films – ‘Deewaar’, ‘Kabhi Kabhie’, ‘Junoon’, ‘Kalyug’, and even one of his first works, ‘Dharmputra’ – are still part of Hindi film history, and are definitely worth revisiting, if only to find the terrific, nuanced actor lurking inside that very attractive man!” he says.

SRK-dancing-on-a-mashup-of-Shah Rukh Khan has already begun shooting for his next film with Aanand L Rai. The actor will be seen playing a midget in the movie that also stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

We had already told you earlier that SRK’s team at Red Chillies VFX is working on the special effects of the film and will be using the same technology as was used in Hollywood movies like The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. This is surely going to change the use of technology in Indian cinema.

Now, if latest reports are to be believed then Shah Rukh will also be seen dancing on a hit song of Shashi Kapoor in the film. A MidDay report suggests that the film will have a special revisited version of Shashi Kapoor’s popular track Humko Tum Pe Pyar Aaya. A source close to the film’s development informed the tabloid, “SRK will be seen dancing to the classic from Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965). It’s an amusing sequence.”
