Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor, who was suffering from a prolonged illness, breathed his last on Monday at 5:20 pm at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital

Shashi Kapoor, 79, breathed his last at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Monday. The veteran actor has been ill for the longest time now and was admitted on Sunday afternoon to the hospital. The legendary actor known for his films like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’, ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ and many such super-hit films to his credit, started off in Bollywood as a child artist and did 19 films as a child artist. He made his debut as a lead actor in ‘Dharmputra’ in 1938 and went on to do more than around 116 films. The actor is survived by his three kids Karan Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor and Sanjana Kapoor.

Bollywood fraternity still is unable to fathom the fact that the thespian has passed away. 

Talking about what kind of a person Shashi Kapoor was, Aamir Khan spoke about his gentle nature, his contribution to theatre and many other things. Aamir also passed his heartfelt condolences to Kapoor’s children.

Senior actress Poonam Dhillon, who has worked with Shashi Kapoor on several films including, ‘Deshwasi’, ‘Bepanaah’ and ‘Trishul’ amongst others also offered her condolences.

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who shares a very thick bond with the Kapoors also remembered him by writing, “#RIPShashiKapoor …the most charming and enigmatic actor ever…a gentleman movie star! His legacy in film and theatre is exceptional…thoughts and prayers with the family….his work will always live on…”

Senior actor and politician Raj Babbar, who worked with Shashi ji in films like ‘Kalyug’ and ‘Jaaydaad’ also passed his condolences.

Actor Kay Kay Menon also paid his tribute to the actor and wrote, “That effervescent smile, that infectious charm!. We will miss you Shashiji! RIP #ShashiKapoor #legend(sic).”

Former Bollywood actress Simi Garewal, who also shared screen space with Kapoor, is taken aback by this sudden news and wrote, “The last of that Kapoor generation has gone.” She has worked in films like ‘Ahsaas’, ‘Siddhartha’ and few other films with the star.

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who worked with the thespian in two films said, “I worked with him in two movies. Gautam Govinda n Krodhi in late 70 s. N learnt a lot from him like work ethics discipline time planning, compassion,Humble to lowest rank person and above all his love n passion for good cinema n theatre development in india.  Handsome gentleman with beautiful mind n heart. An inspiring institute himself. RIP (sic).”

Actor Shekhar Suman also remembered the ace actor and said that he owes his entire career to Shashi Kapoor. He stated, “Saddest day of my life… Shashi Kapoor ji passed away. The man to whom I owe my entire career. I am grateful to him for all my professional achievements, for giving me my first and the biggest break as a lead in “Utsav” opposite Rekha. Will miss you every moment of my life. Shashi Kapoor was the most handsome man the film industry has ever seen. A ladies man, a gentleman, a great actor and a passionate producer. I grew up imitating him and trying to look like him. I can’t bear the thought that he is no more. I’m heartbroken.”
