An excerpt from Yasser Usman’s Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy makes some interesting revelations

Sanjay Dutt

Sanjay Dutt had not cried when his mother Nargis died and for three long years his wounds were festering when suddenly he got tapes of his mother’s dying wish and finally burst out crying.

This is among many anecdotes about the ‘original bad boy’ of Bollywood mentioned in a new book on him.

In Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy, Yasser Usman tells Sanjay’s story – the good, the bad and, at times, the disastrously absurd, the conflicts, the mistakes, the many heartbreaking tragedies, and the overwhelming triumphs.

The book, published by Juggernaut, talks about Sanjay’s ladies, his craziest moments like doing drugs, drinking the blood of a monitor lizard and shooting inside his home one unhinged night.

Nargis died on May 3, 1981 of cancer just before the release of Sanjay’s film Rocky.

“Sanjay had not cried when his mother died. It had been three long years since Nargis had passed away but Sanjay’s wounds were still festering,” Usman writes.

Sanjay was at that at a drugs rehab centre in the US. Father Sunil Dutt sent him some tapes of Nargis talking during her final days so as to help him in his rehab.

“When Sanjay got the tapes from Sunil he had no idea what was on them. He pressed play and suddenly the room was filled with Nargis’s voice. He remembered his childhood, when his mother’s voice would reverberate through the Dutt mansion,” the book says.

His mother’s voice was weak, broken and in immense pain.

But Nargis still spoke of her dreams for her beloved son, and gave him some gentle advice.

“More than anything, Sanju¿ Keep your humility. Keep your character. Never show off. Always be humble and always respect the elders. That is the thing that is going to take you far. And that is going to give you strength in your work¿,” Nargis said.

Sanjay heard his mother’s voice and realised how much she loved him and cared about him.

“I burst out crying and I cried and cried¿ I cried continuously for four days . . . I think till then I hadn’t grieved for her when she passed away. So her voice and those tapes changed everything in my life,” the book quotes Sanjay as saying.

“He knew that he had to rebuild his life. For a moment he felt his mother had come back from the dead to save him. The incident was a turning point in Sanjay’s life. His mother’s weak yet loving voice cast light where there had been darkness. Confident that his mother was watching over him, Sanjay started to take his treatment seriously. The healing truly began,” Usman writes.

According to the author, Sanjay’s life is a story of epic proportions.

He goes to describe other titbits like almost a decade before the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, Sanjay was involved in a shooting spree in posh Pali Hill for which he was even arrested. Also he once smuggled heroin into the US and at the height of his addiction, one evening he hallucinated that his father Sunil was melting, and on another occasion that his sister Priya was a gurkha.

Mum about directorial duties, Pooja Bhatt says Sadak 2 with Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt in the works

After months of speculations, it was revealed late last year that Mahesh Bhatt was indeed planning a sequel to Sadak (1991) with Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt reprising their roles. There was also talk about Alia Bhatt joining the duo. Now, we hear, the script has been finalised and the film will roll early next year in all likelihood.

A trade source says that while the makers were keen on shooting the sequel this year, it had to be pushed due to Alia’s chock-a-block date diary. The source also hints that though Dutt has loved the script, he hasn’t signed on the dotted line yet. “Sadak 2 has been written for Sanjay Dutt keeping his earlier character, Ravi, in mind. While Sanju is looking forward to working with Pooja and Bhatt saab again, his remuneration is still under consideration. Once that is finalised, they will announce the film.”

While buzz suggests that Pooja is all set to helm the sequel, the next few weeks will see the Bhatts taking a call on the matter. “Though Mohit Suri is in contention, Bhatt saab is keen that Pooja direct the film. It will be interesting to see her act in, and direct the movie as well.”

When mid-day reached out to Pooja Bhatt, she was tight-lipped about the possibility of directing Sadak 2: “I can’t say it’s true neither can I say it’s untrue. All I can say right now is that we roll in February, 2019, and it will be a start-to-finish schedule,” she said.

Well, this is one relationship that we don’t often hear about, the special bond between ‘Munnabhai’ and Amitabh Bachchan. The duo is a die-hard lover of watches and has awesome international collections of it. Whenever one of the people travels abroad, without fail they have to get a watch for the other person. Dutt’s respect for the megastar is such that once he was smoking a cigarette and watched him come towards him, the former immediately crushed the already lit cigarette in his hand.

They have worked in films like ‘Kaante’, ‘Viruddh’, ‘Department’ and ‘Hum Kisise Kum Nahin’.

Diljit Dosanjh, whose Hindi film “Soorma” will lock horns at the box office with Dutt biopic, says he is looking forward to see the movie as he is a huge fan of both Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt

Diljit Dosanjh

Diljit Dosanjh, whose Hindi film “Soorma” will lock horns at the box office with Dutt biopic, says he is looking forward to see the movie as he is a huge fan of both Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt.

“Soorma” and Dutt biopic are scheduled to be released on June 29. “The film is based on my favourite superstar Sanjay Dutt sir and my favourite actor Ranbir is playing his role and it is directed by my favourite director (Rajkumar Hirani). “All my favourite people are in a one film so I am very excited to see it. I will definitely go and watch the film,” Diljit told PTI.

When asked about the clash, the 34-year-old star said, “I don’t know if it is clashing or not. The producers are ideally the best people to talk about it. They are the owners they will talk about it.” Diljit, who will be seen as former Indian hockey captain Sandeep Singh in “Soorma”, said it was a difficult film to make.

“I have not played any games so far. I feel hockey is a tough game. I am very happy that in the second year of my acting career in Bollywood I got to do a biopic. We all have worked really hard.” “Soorma” tells the story of Singh, an Indian professional field hockey player and an ex-captain of the national team. He was grievously injured after he was hit in an accidental gunshot in a train in 2006 but he did not give up and continued playing.

The “Udta Punjab” actor says despite the doctors giving up and losing all hope, the hockey player bounced back. According to Diljit, the makers of “Soorma” have tried their best to present an authentic story of Singh on screen. The actor-singer was trained for almost two months by Singh, who used to be present on the sets most of the time. Talking about the film’s title, Diljit says, “‘Soorma’ means someone who does something that is impossible. It’s the perfect title.”

Sanjay_amitabhBollywood actor Sanjay Dutt’s wife Manyata Dutt, named among those in the ‘Paradise Papers’ accused of parking their wealth in tax havens abroad, says all her financial dealings are above board.

Dilnashin figures among the 714 Indian links named in the ‘Paradise Papers’, said the Indian Express in a banner story done as part of a global probe carried out by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

Her spokesperson said in a statement: “As per the requirements of provisions of Income Tax Act, 1961, all the properties, company or body corporate or shares in any company are declared in the balance sheet.”

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been named as part of the leaks, regarding shareholding in a Bermuda company acquired before the 2004 Liberalised Remittance Scheme kicked in.

A day before the big story broke, Amitabh had penned his thoughts on being named in the Bofors scandal and the earlier Panama Papers leaks.

“Tomorrow there could be more… And the process of our cooperation shall continue,” he wrote in a blog post on Sunday.

On the Panama Papers of last year, he wrote: “We were asked for reactions, for responses, for justification or not, for replies to their investigative queries… Two instant replies were given out by us… Of denial and misuse of name. They were printed… but the questions continued.

“The fullest cooperation has been extended at all hours as dutiful citizens.. And even after, if there is any more query that needs to be addressed, we shall comply.”
