The audiences, Denzongpa believes, are more diverse now and want to see characters from real life

Danny Denzongpa
Danny Denzongpa

He has the restless soul of a nomad and calls himself aloof but Danny Denzongpa, the unlikely star of India’s glamour industry, finds a sense of belonging not just in his serene homeland Sikkim but also in bustling Bollywood. With one foot in Sikkim, where he runs a successful brewery, and another in Bollywood, Danny has been a Hindi film regular since 1971, averaging a film a year even now when he is 70.

Danny Denzongpa, who is getting ready for the release of ‘Bioscopewala’ where he plays the title role, says the key to a rich and fulfilling life lies in staying aloof from the “filmy” aspect of the industry. “I’m like an alien in the film industry. I have come from a far off place, Sikkim. Despite being in the industry, I have never been a ‘filmy’ kind of person. I have been aloof. I just do my job,” Danny told PTI in a phone interview.

The iconic villain of many a film who went on to play a variety of roles shares a deep connect with his birthplace in Sikkim and loves to spend time on his farmhouse when he is not shooting a film. “Monotony is something that disturbs me. I try to diversify by painting, carving, singing and writing. That keeps one alive. I never plan things. Whenever I have felt like I should stop acting, I have done that. That could be the reason I survived for so long,” he said.

Danny believes his birthplace and his upbringing have a lot to do with his ease of being, and keeping him detached from the trappings of glamour. Born in West Sikkim’s Yuksom village, Danny describes his home state as a magical place full of hills, forest and meadows. “My village is the last village after which there is no house only a forest, which leads to a beautiful meadow, perfect for longs walks. I have named my brewery after Yuksom and my Mumbai home is named after the meadow, Dzongri.”

The actor says he is still surprised by his journey in films from one of the remotest places in India but it has helped him keep things in perspective. “I remember, it used to take two days of walking to catch a bus to my school hostel. We would either travel on foot or on horseback in those days. I have seen all that. I tell my son that when I came to Mumbai from the Pune Film Institute, I had Rs 1,500 in my pocket and if today, I lost everything, my shoes would still cost more than the money I came with. I credit my parents and teachers for my upbringing and Buddhism. People call it a religion today but it is really a philosophy. I try to find peace in my work. I never rush into things.”

The actor says he is surprised that people embraced him despite his different looks, language and religion. “When I came here, my face was different, my language and my religion were different but they accepted me. I have played Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha’s brother. I myself was not convinced in the beginning when producers came with these roles. I would tell them ‘How can I look like their brother? Don’t cast me, your film will not work’.”

The actor, still known for his portrayal as a sadistic husband in “Dhund” and the cruel Kancha Cheena from “Agneepath”, says his sensibilities are more aligned towards realistic cinema. That’s what attracted him to “Bioscopewala”, an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s classic short story “Kabuliwala”. The film, directed by Deb Medhekar, releases this Friday.

He believes the beautiful portrayal of the loneliness of the migrant and his bond with a little girl in Kolkata city, who reminds him of his daughter in Afghanistan, is behind the timelessness of the story. “Though there are changes from the original story, the soul of the story is intact and that’s what attracted me to this film. They have changed the time period and have set it in the early ’80s and I have become a bioscopewala instead of the dry fruit seller that Tagore wrote about,” says the actor.

Danny says he only accepts roles that interest him now. “In the industry, people know everyone’s temperament and I believe in being honest rather than keeping people waiting. If I don’t like the script, I tell them, ‘I’m so sorry, the script is not good’. If I know the person, I tell them, ‘Yaar, please don’t make it’.”

Besides acting, Denzongpa also directed the 1980 film “Phir Wahi Raat”. If the mood dictates, he says he might just find himself behind the camera again. The space for the larger than life villain has shrunk with realism making an entry into the commercial arena. “The cinema of ’70s and ’80s was about action and revenge. For a script like that, you needed a strong villain and a strong hero. When we started, it was the era of romantic and family films but with the rise of Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan), came the phase of action films, which lasted for almost three decades and then it changed again in ’90s with Salman and Shah Rukh as romantic heroes.”

The audiences, Danny believes, are more diverse now and want to see characters from real life. “What used to worry me and still does is that our quality is still not great. We are the largest film industry in the world and make over 1,200 films but there should be at least one film that earns name and fame globally. This is still not happening. But the time is right for that to happen.”

Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan’s wry sense of humour is often on display on social media. Big B also chides the younger lot of actors on the platform. Yesterday, he seems to have taken a dig at Varun Dhawan.

Big B wrote on Instastory, “Double glasses and ready for the gym. No, you will not follow me there… it is too embarrassing, follow Varun (sic).” Of late, the October actor has been flooding his social networking handles with workout videos and pictures. The actor has been chronicling his every move in the gym. Is this Big B’s way of telling him to calm down?

On Sunday, 102 Not Out earned Rs 7.60 Crore, and Monday it minted Rs 3.02 Crore. After continuing a decent five-run at the Box Office, the film has finally earned Rs 22.50 crore

Moviegoers turned up in abundance to watch Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor reunite on screen after 27 years in 102 Not Out. The comedy raked in approximately Rs 9.05 crore (Rs 3.52 on Friday and Rs5.53 on Saturday) since its release.

After five days of its release, Amitabh Bachchanand Rishi Kapoor’s film remains strong on Tuesday and garners Rs 2.83 crore at the box office. 102 Not Out is set to have long legs at Box Office.

On Sunday, the film earned Rs 7.60 Crore, and Monday it minted Rs 3.02 Crore. After continuing a decent five-run at the Box Office, the film has finally earned Rs 22.50 crore.

While fans are appreciating the camaraderie between Amitabh Bachchan andRishi Kapoor in 102 Not Out, music aficionados are celebrating the movie’s soundtrack. Composed by Salim–Sulaiman, the film, which was earlier supposed to be song-less, features three tracks that have an old-world charm.

Talking about their vision for the music, Salim Merchant says, “While composing the tracks, we reflected upon a dialogue that Mr Bachchan says in the movie, ‘Mujhe duniya ki har nayi cheez pasand aati hai, par music puraana pasand hai.’ That triggered the idea that we make vintage music for the film — music that’s reminiscent of the ’60s and ’70s.” The duo enjoyed liberty while composing the songs because their vision coincided with that of the makers. “Umesh [Shukla, director] and Saumya [Joshi, screenplay writer] needed songs that touched the heart and were close to the character sketches . We were happy to hear that brief because that was our vision too. We didn’t face any challenges while working on the film.

The makers loved what we made them listen to. There was mutual respect and trust,” says Sulaiman Merchant. Considering music plays a pivotal role in determining a film’s success, one would anticipate that working on 102 Not Out, which marks the on-screen union of Bachchan and Kapoor after 27 years, would have been taxing for the composer duo. But they refute the notion, stating, “We consider composing music a serious, yet passionate art form. And pressure is challenging. The stress is more when the star cast is new or a film marks a director’s debut, because the music plays an important role in the initial success of such films,” says Salim.

Most music directors who compose the soundtrack of a film usually like to work on its background score too, 102 Not Out’s backing music was helmed by George Joseph. “But we were a big part of the score. Initially, the movie was to release on a previous date. But since it got delayed, and we were committed to perform at concerts overseas around the time allotted for the creation of the background music, we thought of getting someone else, someone who is good, who would work with us, and still get the screen credit,” says Sulaiman.

Prakash Bharadwaj says that his film, featuring Rituparna Sengupta and Priyanshu Chatterjee in lead roles, is a result of his learnings from Aamir Khan over the years

Aamir Khan

His box-office record is proof that Aamir Khan is a whiz when it comes to films. So, it’s not surprising that Khan’s speech and acting coach Prakash Bharadwaj is keen that the superstar be the first one to watch his directorial debut, Colours Of Life. Bharadwaj, who trained the cast of Thugs Of Hindostan — including Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh — has organised a special screening of his English film for the team.

Confirming the same, he told mid-day, “We have booked the preview theatre in Yash Raj Films for the screening of my film, on May 14. So far, the entire cast and crew have promised their presence. Since Aamir sir has been on choc-a-block schedule he hasn’t had the time to watch the film yet. I can’t wait for Aamir to see it.”

Prakash adds that the drama, featuring Rituparna Sengupta and Priyanshu Chatterjee in lead roles, is a result of his learnings from Khan over the years. “He is a masterclass by himself. I have made this movie from everything that I have learnt from him on the job.”

Slated to release on July 6, the film explores two themes — the impact of technology in our personal lives, and women empowerment.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, one of the most widely followed Indian celebrities on Twitter, has once again written to the micro-blogging platform’s management requesting them to increase the “number” of followers. Big B on Friday tweeted that he has been posting a lot and even asked them if something else needs to be done to increase the number of followers.

“Arre yaar Twitterji. Yaar ab toh hamare numbers badha do (At least now increase my number of Twitter followers). Kab se itna kuch dal rahe hain (I am posting so much)… Kuch aur karna ho, number badhane ke liye to bolo (Let me know if I have to do something else to increase the number followers),” Amitabh Bachchan, 75, wrote.

That time, the fan following of Big B quickly dropped from 33 million to 32.9 million. It led a team of officials from Twitter to met him. On the film front, Amitabh will be seen in “102 Not Out” along with veteran actor Rishi Kapoor.

Asserting that his love for his craft is enough, Rishi Kapoor says he will “never” explore direction again

Rishi Kapoor
Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor is not one to evade questions, but he does tire of repetition. “How many times can I answer the same questions over and over again? It’s either about the role or the film? Ask me kuch alag.” So we ask him “kuch alag”. We ask him to reflect on his past ventures, like, maybe, Ranbhoomi (1991), also starring Jeetendra and Shatrughan Sinha. “Why are you reminding me about it,” he groans. “It was an awful film, which is better forgotten. Ask me something else.”

Seated with the veteran at a Juhu hotel, we’re instantly reminded about how this place was once the hotspot for stars, including him. “Yes it was, years ago. This was the happening place. Today, every memory of my life is at least 30 to 40 years old. This generation refers to me as Ranbir Kapoor‘s father. That’s fine. I live in the present. I’m not one to keep saying, ‘Hamara bhi zamaana tha.’ You must move on with the time.”

Playing father to Rishi Kapoor in the upcoming venture 102 Not Out
Playing father to Rishi Kapoor in the upcoming venture 102 Not Out

Moving on in his career, however, has landed Rishi Kapoor back in time. His recent venture, 102 Not Out, sees him collaborate with an artiste he shared screen space with 27 years ago. “Amitji [Amitabh Bachchan] has played my step father-in-law, brother and buddy. Now, I am playing his son. I have been working with him for 44 years. It is not that I haven’t met him throughout these years. We catch up at social gatherings. He is a challenging and delightful actor. I consider myself a student of cinema, so I continously learn from him.”

Even though their collaboration has given the industry masterpieces like Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Naseeb (1981) and Coolie (1983), among others, Kapoor singles out Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) as a film that’s special. “People tell me today that [even] children love watching it. It is a timeless film, it is like watching Charlie Chaplin. You can watch it over and over again.”

Amitabh Bachchan has previously been seen as his brother in Amar Akbar Anthony
Amitabh Bachchan has previously been seen as his brother in Amar Akbar Anthony

Kapoor not only gives credit to audiences’ sensibilities when appreciating the films the like, but also points out that they are too evolved to accept poor content offered to them by filmmakers. “In the past, every film had the underlying lost-and-found theme. Every actor had at least four films that followed the ‘bachpan mein bichad gaye’ theme, and those films worked. At that time, the audience was forgiving. Today they will not accept anything. There is so much exposure,” he says, pointing towards the inevitable competition they face from Hollywood. “Viewers want chic films, interesting stories, the best popcorn and top amenities at the multiplex. Their demand is justified, given that they shell out R400 for a ticket.”

While the veteran loves to entertain those turning up at cinema halls with his acting prowess, he says they will “never” be witness to his abilities as director again. After wielding the directorial baton in 1991 for Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Aa Ab Laut Chalen, he confesses he’d rather “leave the stress” on set when working on a film. “An actor is a king. People will do salaam to you when you enter and exit the set. Directors or producers have to endure many hassles. I don’t want to go through the stress of acquiring great box office collections. I am 65 and have been working for over four decades. Why would I take on something more challenging than I can handle?”

Friend in Coolie
Friend in Coolie

Acting he says, is his passion, even if he never permitted his parents to notice how excited he was when he first harboured the thought of being an actor. When his father, the late Raj Kapoor casually spoke about including a young Rishi in his project, he was thrilled. “I ran into my room, took a sheet and started practising signing autographs. Cinema has his own charm. Movies are magical.”

It’s probably this admiration that he has for the industry that keeps him going. Even at 65, he has his hands full with his projects. He recently wrapped up Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk, and Leena Yadav’s Rajma Chawal, and will soon kickstart work on Malayalam director Jeetu Joseph’s Bollywood debut. He is also invested in the stage play based on his autobiography, Khullam Khulla.

“I have done shows in Dubai, Hong Kong, Bahrain and London. Most of the audience comprises people who are above 45 years of age, that’s a lot that has grown up watching my films, ones who know me.” But Kapoor’s is a name known across age groups. The young folk on Twitter know him as the man who can’t stop ranting. The actor has mastered the art of tackling trolls. “I keep taking panga on social media,” he smirks, adding, “But, what I tweet is straight from the heart.”

Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor’s effortless performances, coupled with their intoxicating screen presence make 102 Not Out worth watching

102 Not Out
Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor in a still 102 Not Out

102 Not Out
U/A, Comedy-Drama
Director: Umesh Shukla
Actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Jimit Trivedi
Rating: Ratings

“You know this happens often? I know of somebody who went through the same experience,” a woman said to her friend in the theatre. I heard a similar conversation at the preview screening of director Umesh Shukla’s 102 Not Out. Obviously, I wasn’t the only one getting emotionally involved with the tale unfolding on screen.

102 Not Out‘s tale is as old as time. It’s about the sacrifices parents make in order to give their children a good life, only to be rejected by them in their old age. What makes this film different from others based on the same theme is the camaraderie between the two lead actors – Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor. Having played many memorable roles in their long, illustrious careers, the veterans are back together on the big screen after almost three decades, and they are like a house on fire.

Dattatraya Vakharia [Bachchan] is a 102-year-old fun-loving and free-spirited man, who wants to break the world record of living for 118 years, a record held by the Chinese man Wong Chong Tung. On the other hand, Babulal Vakharia [Kapoor] plays his 75-year old son, who is uptight and follows a mundane life. Because of his morose life, Dattatraya decides to send his son to an old-age home, but Babulal disagrees. Dattatraya agrees to stay with him on condition that his son will fulfil a few tasks.

Shukla tries to keep the film breezy, yet high on emotions. The screenplay by Saumya Joshi, who also penned the eponymous Gujarati play that inspired the film, feels patchy at times. Despite some unconvincing moments in the plot, 102 Not Out keeps the viewers involved all the way till the climax. Though the tempo drops considerably in the second half, Shukla ensures that the story doesn’t lose its charm. Admittedly, it does get preachy and you find yourself shifting in your seats when Babulal makes the big climactic revelation to his son that feels forced.

The beauty of the film is that none of its pitfalls eventually matter. The movie wins you over with its innocence and simplicity. Actor Jimit Trivedi, as the errand boy, deserves a special mention as he provides some of the film’s lighter moments with his over-the-top acts. But Bachchan and Kapoor’s effortless performances, coupled with their intoxicating screen presence make this movie worth watching.

Amitabh Bachchan rules Bollywood and even he knows that, but age has its own ways to mess with your head. And Sr. Bachchan seems to be going through some sort of a similar crisis now.

Mr. Bachchan, who is one of the most respected celebs in the movie industry, often wishes his co-stars on their birthdays over a personalised text message.

Well, that’s indeed an amazing thing, but what happens later forms the crux of the story. Turns out, he doesn’t like being ignored when he wishes someone. Well, no one does really, but Big B particularly hates it. Not responding to him, or even responding late to his messages irks him like nothing else. To put it simply, not responding to him has repercussions. Severe repercussions.

And this leaves him with no option but to simply tweet and remind the guilty people to do the deed. Basically, it is like watching his classic movie ‘Baghban’ come to life. Respect your elders y’all!

On Tuesday, Big B messaged Anushka Sharma who was in Bangalore celebrating her birthday with husband Virat Kohli. The actress, in fact, posted a picture on Twitter thanking the Indian Skipper and wrote, “Best birthday with the bestest, kindest, bravest man in the world. Love you for making it so special my love!”

A post shared by AnushkaSharma1588 (@anushkasharma) on May 1, 2018 at 12:09pm PDT

Her Twitter was flooded with warm wishes but Bachchan was truly disappointed and had something serious to say: “@AnushkaSharma .. Anushka .. this is Amitabh Bachchan @Srbachchan .. wished you on May 1st via sms .. no response .. checked they said you changed number .. sent greetings again .. love and wishes .. you looked radiant at the IPL game last night.”

While Anushka had a genuine reason, she replied to him as she saw the tweet and said, “Thank you so much Sir, for remembering my birthday and sending your kind wishes! (Responding to your sms as I tweet this)” wrote Anushka.
