Rajkumar Hirani his making one of the most ambitious projects of his film career- the Sanjay Dutt biopic. Ranbir Kapoor has stuck out his neck for portraying Sanjay Dutt on the big screen and trying to humanise him. Ranbir has undergone several physical transformations as well. Even Sonam Kapoor shot for an extensive portion in New York for the film. She is touted to play the role of Madhuri Dixit, who had a torrid affair with Sanjay Dutt in the 90s. However, one person is clearly a bit salty about her role and portrayal. That happens to be Maanayata Dutt, third wife of Sanjay Dutt.

According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, we hear that Hirani has not intimated her about the screentime her character will get, or what role she will play in the film. A nervous Maanyata, we hear, has been calling all and sundry (including Ranbir Kapoor), trying to get more info on the movie. The part of Maanayata Dutt will be played by Dia Mirza and ironically she only has good things to say about her role. “I believe Maanayata is someone who has a strong sense of self. Ranbir has transformed himself into Sanjay totally but I don’t think others need to do the same. I have interacted with her over the years and I think she is the anchor in Sanjay’s life. But I have perceived Maanayata through the wonderful writing (by Abhijat and Raju) that’s been written about her.”

The Dutt biopic has a stellar star cast comprising of Manisha Koirala playing Nargis Dutt, Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt and Vicky Kaushal as a close aide of Sanjay. The film is set to release in 2018. Sanjay Dutt has led quite a controversial life right from being accused of holding illegal arms and ammunition in his home during 1993 Mumbai blasts to battling drug addiction and multiple marriages.

Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay DuttRanbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt

Ranbir Kapoor says the upcoming biopic on Sanjay Dutt will deal with both the highs and lows of the actor’s life.

Ranbir says Dutt has been very gracious in providing insights about his life story in an honest way for the biopic being helmed by Rajkumar Hirani. “He hasn’t been a hypocrite about it (his life). So it’s not a propaganda film trying to portray him as God or something. “We are trying to show a very human side of Sanjay Dutt, his perils, his downfall, his will to fight, his time in jail, terrorism charges, his drug phase, how he handled his mother’s death two days before the release of his debut film, his relationship with his father. These were human conflicts in
his life,” Ranbir told PTI.

Ranbir, who plays Dutt in the movie, says doing the biopic was daunting initially. “He is such a relevant person even today. He is so much
loved even today. He is controversial. But when you have Rajkumar Hirani as the director and Abhijat Joshi as the writer and the character like Sanjay Dutt, you are somewhere cushioned,” he says. From getting into the skin of the character to getting the body language right, the ‘Jagga Jasoos’ star had to put in a lot of hard work to get every aspect of Dutt correct. “Getting the look right is very superficial, it is easy as you have help from make-up and computer graphics. To show Sanjay Dutt as a human being, as a biopic only works when you show the human side of a person, and not the glories but the downfall as well (was not easy).”

Though Ranbir seems to have got the look right, he is extremely nervous about the film. “I don’t know if I have nailed it or not (referring to
the film). I was very inspired (doing this film). We have a few days left now for the film. It’s a very new me, so I am excited to see how the audience reacts. It should be out on March 30 next year,” he says. There were rumours that the ‘Khalnayak’ track will be
recreated in the biopic but Ranbir says that’s not true. “We have not touched upon the ‘Khalnayak’ phase. This film doesn’t talk about Sanjay Dutt the hero, but Sanjay Dutt’s life. We have touched upon his few films like the first one ‘Rocky’, ‘Munnabhai MBBS’,” he says.

The film also features Manisha Koirala as late Nargis Dutt, Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt and Dia Mirza as Dutt’s present wife Maanayata Dutt

manisha-7591Developments, major or minor, in Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanjay Dutt biopic continue to pique the curiosity of cinephiles. The casting has been equally talked about, especially after recent paparazzi shots of Ranbir Kapoor looking a replica of Dutt. Another highlight is Manisha Koirala, who has romanced the actor in films in late ’90s, featuring as hislate actress-mother, Nargis.

“I hope to do justice to the role,” Manisha tells mid-day with noticeable excitement. “I have always been a fan of Nargisji (Sanjay’s late mother). I am nervous to play her character. The memories of her life and films are still fresh in people’s minds. It’s a challenge.”

The 46-year-old actress has begun prep for the part by reading Sanjay’s sisters, Namrata and Priya’s book, Mr and Mrs Dutt: Memories Of Our Parents. “I am also planning to meet Priya to learn more about Nargisji. We did several look tests to replicate her appearance, from the time she had short hair till she grew them longer.”

Playing mom to Ranbir hasn’t been a cause for apprehension, she says. As for the selection of the protagonist, Manisha believes there couldn’t have been a better choice than Ranbir. “I am his admirer. He is the finest actor of this generation and I don’t think anyone could have played the part better. I saw his photographs [in the get up], and he reminded me of Sanju.”

Rajkumar had reasoned Manisha’s selection was fitting, given that she, like Nargis, was a cancer survivor. Manisha, who has just collaborated with the Nargis Dutt Foundation and Richfeel to spread awareness about the disease, had quietly hoped to work with the director. Ask her what her former co-star from the 2000 film, Baaghi, thinks of her in the role, and she says, “I haven’t had a chance to speak with Sanju, but I will meet him soon.”

sanjay-dutt-biopic-01We all know that Ranbir Kapoor is playing Sanjay Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming biopic on the mercurial actor’s life and is supposed to have six different looks, signifying the important phases of Dutt’s life.

While pictures of Ranbir sporting long locks, like the ones Sanju baba sported in the 90s, had sent everyone in a frenzy, Ranbir’s latest pictures have literally broken the internet and have left us speechless.

The recent pictures that have surfaced on the internet has Ranbir sporting a beard and grey hair, and we have to say that the ‘Jagga Jasoos’ actor has nailed Sanjay Dutt’s look completely.

Apart from this major transformation, the ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ star has also mastered Sanjay Dutt’s mannerisms and body language for the biopic, which is tentatively titled as ‘Dutt.’ Recently, Ranbir astonished every one when he perfectly imitated Dutt’s walk at an award show in Mumbai.

Talking about the film Ranbir said, “The movie is 60 per cent complete and soon it will get over. It feels very proud that I’m doing the Sanjay Dutt biopic and I’m very thankful to Vinod sir (Vidhu Vinod Chopra) and Sanjay sir specially.”

Ranbir will be next seen in ‘Jagga Jasoos’, which is finally slated to release on July 14.

Sanjay DuttSanjay Dutt

He can pull off a ganji [vest] in style and make it look cool,” says Navin Shetty, who has been Sanjay Dutt’s stylist for nearly two decades. As the actor readies himself to make a comeback with Omung Kumar’s Bhoomi, there’s talk about his new look for the film. He has been seen on the set of the film in Agra in a kurta pyjama with a cropped, short mane. Dutt is one of those few actors who undergoes a metamorphosis for every one of his films. His looks have become iconic since his debut in Rocky (1981).

Navin Shetty
Navin Shetty

Navin says that there’s something unique about Dutt as he can effortlessly slip from playing a brooding gangster to a heartwarming hero. “He isn’t different in real-life either. The guy is all-heart with the DNA of a rockstar. There is an intrinsic aura to Sanju Sir. He commands awe the minute he walks on the set. You don’t need to fuss over him, you just know a superstar is in the vicinity.”

Setting a trend
The stylist says Dutt has always been a trendsetter. In the ’90s, he was the first to sport long hair in films like Khalnayak (1993) and Saajan (1991) before other actors like Saif Ali Khan and Bobby Deol went on to ape it. As Navin puts it, “His long hair was a rage among the girls.”

The first glimpse of Ranbir Kapoor sporting long hair was leaked from the set of the biopic on Sanjay Dutt a few days ago. RK plays Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani’s film. It was natural to ask Navin which would be the most challenging look for the makers to crack.

“Khalnayak (1993) and Kaante, (2002),” he answers promptly while saying, “Sanju Sir never interferes with the work of any stylist. If he has anything specific in mind, he makes suggestions beforehand. His faith in me has always been steadfast. Once I have got him ready, he doesn’t look into the mirror. His confidence sets him apart. Not every actor can wear what he does and look good in it. One of the advantages of working with him, is that he allows you to experiment. Anything you give him becomes an extension of his personality,” Navin adds. One of his toughest tasks was to get the right look for Dutt in PK (2014) in which he played a Rajasthani character. “Once he was in costume, he was comfortable.

Even in churidar and kurta, he rocked the look.”

Though Naveen isn’t the man styling Ranbir for the biopic, he says he is keen to see the young actor replicate Sanjay’s look in Musafir (2004). “He was ultra whacko in it. He wore a blue lens in one eye and green in the other. He had spiked hair, done differently and a toned beard. That is his most loud film and everything in it was outlandish. It will be fun to see Ranbir do that and I have no doubt he will ace it,” he quips, adding, “There was a specific pair of trousers for that film that he had his heart set on. It was the only time in so many years that he’d insisted on something so strongly.”

Another look that will be an uphill task for Ranbir, according to Navin, will be from Agneepath (2012). “He looked bulky and menacing with a shaved head. I am not sure what the biopic includes, but if he has to look anything like Kancha, it will require a lot of work.”

Reference point
Since Navin has worked with Sanjay and Rajkumar Hirani in the Munnabhai franchise, he understands the preparation that goes into a regular Hirani film during pre-production. Quiz him about the film’s stylist needing help in referencing from him, and he says, “I know that for the biopic, Raju sir would’ve already decided the looks he wants to incorporate in the film. A few rounds of rehearsals would’ve already been done on them. His style of working is methodical.”

Gangsta rap
Of all the feedback that has poured in for his work over the years, he says the gangster look has been a unanimous favourite with all. “Leather jackets, accessories and boots are his all-time favourites. That’s the one time he loves dressing up. Beads on the neck, earrings, sometimes leather wristbands. Unlike other actors, he doesn’t obsess about branded stuff. Since he can render class to anything he picks up from the street, he has a few local haunts which he frequents.”

Accessorise it
Navin, who has worked with Sanjay since Plan in 2004, says, “Sanju has a fetish for watch and sunglasses. He picks up a new one every time he likes something and has an enviable collection. Usually actors ask their stylists for suggestions on their personal collection, but he is inherently stylish, he doesn’t need it. He could be a little possessive about his stuff, but when it comes to photoshoots, he uses his own clothes and looks classically Sanjay Dutt.

While merrily lashing out at “competition” (read: Deepika Padukone) Anushka Sharma also took a snipe at Sushant Singh Rajput , stating rather unnecessarily, “Sushant has only eight days of work (in Raj Kumar Hirani’s PK)…he is just a small chapter in my life.”

Taking deep umbrage to what is being seen as an attempt to undervalue the newcomer, a source says, “Isn’t Anushka pissed off about her colleagues trying to downplay and downsize her stardom? Then why is she doing the same to another colleague? Why is Anushka commenting on the length and breadth of a co-star’s role? How does she know the size of Sushant’s role? No one except probably Aamir has read the full script.”

Setting the record straight, the source says, “Yes, it’s a relatively small role. At a time when he’s playing the lead in a Yash Raj film, Sushant has agreed to do the role in PK for one reason only, Rajkumar Hirani. It was Sushant’s dream to work with Raju. When he was offered the role, Sushant was over the moon. Raju warned him it’s a small but important role. Sushant said, ‘Doesn’t matter, Sir, even if you ask me to walk from one side of the frame to the other I’d do it’.”

Apparently, Sushant has not charged a single penny for the part. Says the source, “Raju gave Sushant Rs.20 as signing amount, and asked him what he’d like as his fee. Sushant refused any payment, got the Rs.20 laminated and has framed the same on the wall of his living room. That’s the kind of regard Sushant has for Rajkumar Hirani.”

The source informs that Sushant Singh’s role in PK would be billed as a friendly appearance. “He will be seen at the beginning of the film. His character then disappears and reappears at the end,” informs the source.

“Anushka wants her colleagues to stop commenting on her roles. She should follow what she preaches,” the source adds.

Sushant Singh Rajput remained unavailable for comment.
