 Priyanka Chopra and Salman Khan
Priyanka Chopra and Salman Khan

Priyanka Chopra’s absense from IIFa Awards 2017 was quite surprising and it did not go unnoticed from the prying eyes of the audiences and media. Priyanka, gave the reason that since she was celebrating her birthday and promoting her Marathi film as a producer, she decided to skip the 18th leg of IIFA Awards. According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, Piggy Chops did not attend the ceremony because she was offered less remuneration. Furthermore, the report stated that she was irked even further, when her remunaration was said to be less than that of Salman Khan.

The organizers wanted to Priyanka Chopra to perform, just the way she had performed last year and walked with an award, but talks failed through when she found out that she was offered lesser pay than a male superstar. Rumour has it that the male superstar in question is Salman Khan. At the IIFA press conference in New York, the actor had said, “I don’t receive awards, I just perform on stage. If they want me for such a bad performance that they are paying me for it, I’m more than happy.”

On the workfront, Priyanka Chopra will be next seen in two Hollywood films, ‘ A Kid Like Jake’ and ‘Isn’t It Romantic’?. Speculations are rife that she is being offered to play ‘Amrita Pritam’ in the biopic on poet Sahir Ludhianvi, a film which will be helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

salmanHe rules the roost as far as the Bollywood box office is concerned, but Salman Khan feels no one should lose any money even if a film doesn’t do well. HT caught up with him around his film, Tubelight’s release to talk about box office pressures, being on Forbes’ list, and more.

What goes through your mind around a new film’s release?
Towards the end [of the shooting] of a film or when it’s about to release, we concentrate on getting the right length and ensuring that the right product is delivered. So, whatever goes on in my head is when I’m signing a movie or hearing a script. Making a decision to do a film is the most difficult part. If I don’t like a script, no one can convince me by saying, ‘kar le yaar’ (do the film). But once I’ve made that decision, I am sorted, because I know I have taken the right call.

So, what’s your criterion to choose a film?
I only choose films that I would be interested in watching myself. Even if it was somebody else’s film and I saw the promo and liked it, I should want to go to the theatre and watch it. Also, if someone sees a poster or a song, one should be curious about that film’s release.

With so much expectation from you, do you ever feel pressure?

Everyone wants [their films to do] big numbers. We all want our films to make Rs 500, Rs 600 or Rs 700 crore, and one should aim for that. But if you don’t make such numbers, then the most important thing is that no one should lose any money. My principle is also the same: if a film does such numbers, it’s very good, but no one should lose any money.

Recently, you were featured in Forbes’ list of the world’s most-paid actors. How much does money matter to you?
Money matters to everyone, but I don’t know on what basis they included me in the list. There are billions of people who have a trillion times more money than I could ever have. As for me, I am still falling short [of money] to buy a house. Earlier, I would fall short by a few lakh, and then it became a few crores, then it reached Rs 20-25 crores, and now, by a few more crores, so, I always fall short.

Rumours suggest that you are going to buy a new place…
Yes, let’s see. We are still checking out some places. Ghar toh le lunga (I’ll buy a house), but this [Galaxy Apartments] will always be home. Even today, whenever Sohail (Khan; brother), Arbaaz (Khan; brother), Baby (Alvira Agnihotri; sister) or Arpita (Khan Sharma; sister) say they are ‘coming home’ or tell someone to ‘come home’, they mean Galaxy. Everyone knows that ‘home’ doesn’t mean where Baby, Arpita, Sohail or Arbaaz live.

Recently, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion did the kind of numbers that your films usually do…
For Baahubali’s success, the credit goes to the writer and the director. It’s written by the same writer, KV Vijayendra Prasad, who also wrote Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and he is a phenomenal man. His son, SS Rajamouli, is one of the best directors that we have in our country. Having said that, it’s amazing that the Hindi film audience accepted a regional film and made it such a big hit. It means they truly love cinema. They want to go to the theatre and watch a good film, no matter if it is a Tamil, Telugu or English film.

But isn’t it a good trend to have set in?
Absolutely, also it’s our audience’s large-heartedness that they watched Baahubali 2 repeatedly, appreciated it and helped the film achieve such numbers. If it wasn’t releasing in Hindi, it wouldn’t have done so well. So, the credit goes to the director, the writer, and a huge amount of credit goes to Hindi cine-goers, who weren’t biased towards Hindi films. It’s all about watching a good film.

In the recent past, a few of your comments have created controversies. Is that frustrating?
Everyone shares their opinion but when somebody like me says something, it’s twisted around. Then, a [TV] show runs [the comment], and it gets good TRPs. But if it’s their business, let them do it. The other option for me is to just stop talking. I hate doing interviews, and I get bored of them but I do them because if a fan of mine picks up a newspaper or a magazine; or watches a TV channel, he should know that a certain film of mine is up for release. That’s all.

But hasn’t the intense media focus become part-and-parcel of being an actor?
Till before Jaan-E-Mann (2006), I never stepped out of my house for interviews. When did I do any publicity for any film? The films would still run and became big hits. But now that a precedent [of doing interviews] has set in, so it’s going on. Now, if I go on a TV show (for promotions), it feels good if their TRPs get boosted. Also, through that show, my fans will get to see me at home for free. That’s the only intent of doing all of that. But then, a lot of times, journalists want a reaction about something because either their bosses have asked them for that or they want to make a name for themselves. But that’s wrong journalism, which I don’t appreciate at all.

Coming to films, what’s your personal take on the power of cinema?
I believe that when people watch good cinema with noble characters — featuring their favourite stars or even not so favourite ones — those films work and influence people’s hearts and minds. Those people turn into better human beings once they are out of the cinema halls. Cinema is the only medium wherein one goes inside a theatre and comes out a better and different person in two-and-a-half hours. I totally believe that. In such a case, even if a film stars someone’s not so favourite actors, they become favourites if they play that character well.

And what about negative roles?
Even when you watch a negative character being played by an actor, who is performing really well, you would still never want to be that person. You want to see him getting beaten up and die. But, in a way, that negative character also changes you. So, the audience thinks, ‘I don’t want to be like this. I want to be like the hero.’

What are your upcoming projects?
There’s Tiger Zinda Hai followed by Remo’s (D’Souza) film, and then, there is Dabangg 3. For the time being, I am doing only these three.

Are you excited about going back to being Chulbul Pandey?
Yes, I am very excited. We have got a very good script too that has the same characters but this will be on a different level altogether.

Is Prabhudheva directing it?
Yes, we are in talks [with him].

Salman-Katrina-IIFAActress Katrina Kaif tasted her first Bollywood success opposite Salman Khan and she said meeting the superstar was the most memorable moment of her life.

The 33-year-old actress made her film debut with Kaizad Gustad’s 2003 movie “Boom”, which was a failure. Her first hit was 2005 Salman-starrer “Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?”, directed by David Dhawan.

When asked what was the most naughty or memorable thing she did at the age of 18, Katrina replied, “I was 18 when I met Salman and that is the most memorable thing.”

To which Salman jokingly added, “There is nothing naughty that I did. And there is nothing memorable that I have done.”
Salman and his former girlfriend, Katrina, will be performing at the 18th edition of The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards here.

When posed the same question, actress Alia Bhatt said, she was giving her exams and was also doing workshops for her debut film “Student of the Year” at the age of 18.

The 24-year-old actress said she was both nervous and excited about her debut performance at IIFA.

“I have not been part of the IIFA so far and I think everything happens for a reason. It had to be in New York and it had to be when I was nominated for two of my films – ‘Dear Zindagi’ and ‘Udta Punjab’. It is special. I am excited, enthusiastic and nervous.”
Katrina quickly added, “I hope Alia wins both the trophies and gives one in charity.”

Salman-Akshay-Teaser-1-1Earlier this year it was announced that Salman Khan and Karan Johar would collaborated together and produce a film which would star Akshay Kumar. Obviously, Bollywood buffs couldn’t contain their excitement.

However, it looks like that excitement was just short-lived. If rumors are to be believed, Salman Khan, who was supposed to co-produce the film has opted out of the project which was supposedly based on the ‘Battle Of Saragarhi.’

Apparently, the reason behind it is Salman’s alleged fallout with his manager Reshma Shetty, who is now Akshay Kumar’s manager and also the failure of his recent film ‘Tubelight’. And now Salman doesn’t want to do another war based film. Furthermore, some reports even claim that the film is shelved.

This is not the first-time reports of Salman backing out of this project have come up. Earlier, when Ajay Devgn announced a film based on the same subject, it was heard that given Salman’s equation with Ajay, the ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ actor had opted out of the film.

However, at that time Salman took to his twitter and wrote, “Don’t follow rumors. follow me. ek baar jo maine commitment kar di toh phir……vry much doing film with @akshaykumar.”

Well, we are waiting for one more such tweet from the ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ star to rubbish off this news.

Katrina Kaif may be busy promoting her upcoming film with former lover Ranbir Kapoor, but it’s the opportunity to work with the top three Khans of Bollywood that has her excited and feeling fortunate.

“It’s a coincidence that I am working with all of them around the same time,” says the actor, adding, “I am shooting for ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’. Salman is an amazing co-star to work with. I am comfortable around him. Recently, I wrapped up the shoot for ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ with Aamir in Malta. His approach is meticulous, he is dedicated to his craft. And next is a film with Shah Rukh.”

Putting her failed relationship with Kapoor behind Katrina Kaif, she wishes to now focus on her work. “Over the last year-and-a-half, people have spoken more about my personal life. But I wish that the focus now shifts to my work. It hasn’t been easy to get back to the grind, but I am enjoying it,” she says.

Kaif’s last two Bollywood outings, ‘Fitoor’ and ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ (both 2016), didn’t fare well at the box office, and she doesn’t deny that failure bothers her. “When a film doesn’t do well after all the hard work [you put in], there is heartbreak. It’s not a good feeling. I’d love to experience box office acceptance.”

tapaaseActress Taapsee Pannu has wrapped up shooting major portions of her upcoming film “Judwaa 2” and is now looking forward to shoot with superstar Salman Khan.

“Judwaa 2” is a sequel to the 1997 hit film “Judwaa” which starred Salman in a double role. In the second installment, Varun Dhawan reprises the role of the superstar.

When asked how is the film shaping up, Pannu told reporters, “The shooting is going good, it’s about to get over. Two songs and a scene with Salman are left. We will shoot that soon… I am very excited to meet him, it will be my first time, and to share screen space with him.”

The actress recently shot two songs for the movie which were retained from the original, “Oonchi Hai Building” and “Tan Tana Tan”.
“It was so much fun shooting ‘Oonchi Hai Building’ and ‘Tan Tana Tan’, I didn’t want the shoot to end. These are the songs I grew up listening so I can dance on them for days,”

she said at Sportsperson of the Year award event here last night.

Pannu said if not a movie star, she would’ve loved to be a sports personality as she admires them a lot.

“I feel if I had gotten a chance or had some sports skills, I would’ve definitely tried to be a sports star instead of an actor. I am a sports lover and admire it very much, because the way they play under pressure, with no retakes, representing the country, all of them are big heroes for me.”

salmansrk_1080x1070_51499256829The Khans might as well just make a film together, you know. There was a Shah Rukh Khan cameo in Salman Khan’s Tubelight and now, expect a Salman Khan cameo in Shah Rukh’s film with Aanand L Rai, in which he has been cast as a dwarf. Well, that’s not all. According to a report in Bollywood Life, Shah Rukh also surprised Salman with a brand new car, for agreeing to come on board for the movie. The Dabangg Khan reportedly squeezed out time from his busy schedule for filming a cameo, which is said to be a song in the yet-untitled film, on short notice. Salman has recently been spotted in the Yash Raj Films studio, where SRK’s film is reportedly being shot. Dressed in black casuals, the bhaijaan was photographed walking away from the vanity van along with Shah Rukh and the director.

The details of the vehicle are not known but the Bollywood Life report states that Salman is the only owner of the newly launched model, courtesy his Karan Arjun co-star. “When Salman Khan came to shoot for the song, Shah Rukh surprised him by gifting him a brand new, luxurious car. The car is newly launched and no one owns this mean machine currently. Salman was shocked as he wasn’t expecting this at all. But because he had managed his dates and agreed to shoot for the song on such a short notice, SRK wanted to gift him something to show his love and appreciation,” Bollywood Lifee quoted a source as saying.

Tubelight was Salman Khan’s Eid offering this year, which has collected Rs. 200 box office crores worldwide so far. Ahead of the film’s release, Salman said hardly any persuasion was required to convince Shah Rukh for the role of a magician named Gogo Pasha in Tubelight. Fans were delighted to see Salman and Shah Rukh together when the Kabir Khan-directed film released.

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan is busy with promotional duties for Jab Harry Met Sejal, also starring Anushka Sharma. After wrapping his portions for SRK’s film, Salman Khan will shift focus to Tiger Zinda Hai, which will also see Katrina Kaif reprise her role from 2012’s Ek Tha Tiger.
