After a decent opening weekend, the box office collection of Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao’s film, which is India’s official entry to Oscars, ‘Newton’ has dropped on Day 4. According to reports, ‘Newton’ has earned Rs 1.40 crore on Monday, taking its total box office collection of 4 days to Rs 8.30 crore. ‘Newton’ has seemingly got a push after it was declared India’s official entry to Oscars and the word of mouth has helped the movie too.

'Newton' box-office collection Day 4: Rajkummar Rao's film dips on Monday
Rajkummar Rao in ‘Newton’

According to a report in Boxofficeindia.com, director Amit Masurkar’s ‘Newton’ slowed down on Monday after having a good jump in its collections over the weekend.

‘Newton’ clashed with Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film ‘Bhoomi’ and Shraddha Kapoor’s ‘Haseena Parkar’ on Friday. If the opening weekend collections are any indication, Rajkummar Rao’s satire seems to be the audience’s pick among the three Bollywood releases. While it did open on a weak note on Friday, the Amit Masurkar-directed black comedy showed an exponential rise over the following two days. With collections of Rs 2.52 crore on Saturday and Rs 3.42 crore on Sunday, it enjoyed a strong opening weekend of Rs 6.90 crore.

While Shraddha Kapoor’s biopic lagged behind at Rs 6.1 crore, Sanjay Dutt’s father-daughter drama managed to garner Rs 7.48 crore over the first weekend. What is noteworthy though is that ‘Newton’ showed higher collections than both films on Saturday and Sunday. It can’t be denied that Newton’s selection as India’s official entry to Oscars raised the audience’s interest in the film.

‘Newton’, however, has courted controversy amid reports that the film has striking similarities with an Iranian movie ‘Secret Ballot’. ‘Newton’ director Amit V Masurkar says he was completely unaware of the Iranian film ‘Secret Ballot’ and that people should watch both the films and compare to find out if they are copied.

‘Newton’ has been chosen as India’s official selection for Oscars 2018. A day after this news was announced, several reports came out claiming that the film has been inspired by a 2001 Iranian movie titled ‘Secret Ballot’, helmed by Babak Payami. It focuses on the life of a ballot officer who visits a barren and desolate place to plead with voters to cast their votes and take part in the elections.

‘Newton’ had its world premiere at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival and won the International Confederation of Art Cinemas Award for best film in the ‘Forum Section’.

Newton‘, which stars National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao, revolves around a government employee who struggles to supervise voting in a forest area of Chhattisgarh, controlled by Maoists.

Producer Marco Mueller feels that there was not even a hint of plagiarisation in Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Newton’, amidst claims that the movie has been inspired from his 2001 Iranian film ‘Secret Ballot’.

On Monday night, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, in a Facebook post, shared Muller’s opinion after watching ‘Newton’. The filmmaker praised the Amit Masurkar-directed movie. Kashyap also took a dig at those claiming the movie was inspired by Babak Payami’s 2001 directorial venture.

“Newton is as much a copy of Secret Ballot as The Avengers is of Watan Ke Rakhwale. Newton is an award winner from Berlin Fest and I can promise you those curators watch more films in a year than the rest of us do in a lifetime,” Kashyap wrote.

Actor Ranveer Singh, who has been locked to play Kapil Dev in a movie on the 1983 cricket World Cup, will meet the team which won the trophy that year. The former India skipper will be part of the meet on Wednesday too.

In 1983, India won its first cricket World Cup against the West Indies. Dev served as the captain of the Indian cricket team then.

The film is being directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Phantom Films. Its scripting is finished.

“It’s a great feeling to start work on this incredible story of the Indian cricket team of 1983. We are feeling very blessed that we are starting this journey along with the heroes of 1983. We are thankful to all the players for taking out time from their schedules and joining us for this event,” Madhu Mantena, co-founder of Phantom Films, said in a statement.

The venue of the meet is yet to be finalised.

Apart from Ranveer, no other cast members have been announced so far, but the announcement of the project has piqued the interest of cricket fans as well as movie buffs.

Well, ‘Newton’ is India’s official entry for the Oscars. Since its announcement, people couldn’t contain their excitement. The film has already gardened great review—both from the critics as well as the viewers. In fact, it even beat ‘Baahubali- The Conclusion’, to be selected as India’s entry for the Academy Awards.

While on one side people couldn’t stop raving about the decision of the panel, on the other hand, ‘Newton’ was also declared to be quite similar to a critically-acclaimed Iranian film ‘Secret Ballot’, which was released in 2001. Oh boy! That already doesn’t sound very good.

Apparently, the premise of both the films is very similar to each other. When Secret Ballot was released, it had already won the Silver Lion Award for Best Director at Venice.

One of the basic differences between the two films is that Secret Ballot had a female protagonist, while Newton has Rajkummar Rao playing the lead. And few alterations are made in the script keeping India in mind.

Secret Ballot(c) Twitter

This piece of news went viral on the social media within no time, once India declared ‘Newton’ as its official entry to the Oscars. Many might call the plot being similar as an inspiration; many might also think of it as a remake of someone else’s work. Either way, this doesn’t make a good picture for our entry at the Oscars.

But this ain’t the first time. A similar event occurred when Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi’ was sent as our official entry to the Awards and later it was said to be adapted from Charlie Chaplin’s comedies and Hollywood sources.

Now that certainly doesn’t keep us in a good place. Especially when it has happened once, wouldn’t it be wise to do our homework rightfully before declaring our nominations?

Being said that, the director and co-writer of Rajkummar Rao starrer Amit Masurkar said that ‘Newton’ is as original as it can get and is just inspired by the Iranian film. With all the controversy going around, one thing can be said for sure that there will be an uproar about it going for the Oscars.

Now wouldn’t it be interesting to see where does Newton’s law of gravity take this film?

NewtonDirector Amit Masurkar’s political satire “Newton”, starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead role, will be India’s official entry at Oscars 2018, the Film Federation of India announced today.

The Hindi film was the unanimous choice of FFI’s selection committee, headed by Telugu producer C V Reddy. “‘Newton’ has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars. It was unanimously chosen from 26 entries this year,” FFI secretary general Supran Sen told .

The decision to choose the film, which was released commercially today, for the Oscars was the proverbial “cherry on the cake”, said actor Rajkummar Rao. “It is a really honest film and we are already getting an overwhelming response. We will put all our energies to take the film forward,” the actor told .

Director Masurkar added that it was a double celebration for the team.”We are really happy. The fact that the film is releasing today doubles the happiness. We hope that people will now really head to the cinema halls to watch the film,” the director told .

The film is a political satire revolving around an honest election officer’s attempt to conduct a free and fair poll in a conflict-hit area of Chhatisgarh. It also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Raghubir Yadav and Anjali Patil.

“Newton” is Masurkar’s second directorial venture after the 2014 indie “Sulemani Keeda”.

For anyone and everyone associated with the film industry, winning the Academy Award aka the Oscar is the ultimate goal. The Indian Film industry obviously doesn’t like lagging behind either.  Every year, The Film Federation of India appoints a committee to choose one film among those released that year to be submitted as India’s official entry to the Academy as the nomination for the “Best Foreign Language Film” category.

This year too, the FFI nominated one movie for the category and unsurprisingly, it’s the Rajkummar Rao starrer ‘Newton’.  The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India, who said the movie was selected out of 26 contenders.

The movie is a political satire and follows the story of Newton Kumar, a government clerk who is sent on election duty in the conflict-ridden jungles of the Chhattisgarh, reflecting the political reality of that area.

The film was premiered earlier at Berlin where it won the CICAE (International Confederation of Art Cinemas) award for best film in the forum section. It also managed to win a jury prize at the Hong Kong international film festival.

However, in India the movie has just released today and has already received positive reviews from both critics as well as the audience.

The news about the nomination was confirmed by Rajkummar Rao on his Twitter page.

Very happy to share this news that #NEWTON is India’s official entry to the #OSCARS this year. Congratulations team.

— Rajkummar Rao (@RajkummarRao) September 22, 2017

Director Amit V Masurkar, in an interview, expressed his joy over the news, “We are really happy. The fact that the film is releasing today doubles the happiness. We hope that people will now really head to the cinema halls to watch the film,” the director told PTI.

In a matter of a few hours, Twitter was buzzing with tweets of proud Indians who were on cloud nine after hearing the news.

Over the years, India has bagged three Academy Award nominations in the foreign-language category; first in 1957 with ‘Mother India’, followed by 1989’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ and 2002’s ‘Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India’, however, the country has never won an Oscar.

This year, Newton will face serious competition from a number of movies from across the world- Ruben Ostlund’s ‘The Square’ from Sweden, Fatih Akin’s ‘In the Fade from Germany’, Angelina Jolie’s ‘First They Killed My Father from Cambodia’, Sebastian Lelio’s ‘A Fantastic Woman from Chile’, Farhan Alam’s ‘Sawan from Pakistan’ and Robin Campillo’s ‘BPM: Beats Per Minute from France’, among others.

We’ve got our fingers crossed as we hope that ‘Newton’ does make it to the Oscar nominations and maybe, even manages to win.

Arjun Kapoor. (Right) Kapil Dev holding the 1983 World Cup trophy

Whether one was a witness to the moment or not, the memory of Kapil Dev lifting the World Cup trophy at London’s Lord’s stadium in 1983 is etched in the mind of every Indian. It’s surprising that in a time when fact is picked over fiction by scriptwriters, and biopics are the flavour of the season, India’s first historic win on a global platform hadn’t caught the fancy of Bollywood directors. That is until now.

Filmmaker Kabir Khan is set to create a cinematic adaptation of team India’s first World Cup win, 35 years after the men in blue defeated West Indies. A source tells mid-day, “A mammoth event is being planned to announce the film on September 27. The makers hope that the Indian players who brought the cup home will grace the occasion.”

Former secretary of the Hyderabad Cricket Association, and manager of team India during the 1983 World Cup, PR Man Singh tells mid-day that he will accompany the 14-member team to the Mumbai do.

The news has already piqued the attention of industry folk, with rumours about the casting having created a buzz. Although Ranveer Singh and Hrithik Roshan’s names are being tossed around, it appears that Arjun Kapoor, fresh of the success of his last release, Mubarakan, is emerging as strong contender for the part of Kapil Dev, then captain of the team. An official announcement is expected at the event.

Tentatively titled World Cup 1983, the film is being jointly produced by Phantom Films and Vishnu Vardhan Induri, founder and managing director of the Celebrity Cricket League. It will be written by National Award-winning director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan.

Arguably one of the most popular and consistent batsmen in modern-day cricket, Virat Kohli has won accolades and continues to grow his fanbase in every corner of the globe. The Indian captain has undeniably been the driving force behind India’s meteoric rise in cricket over the past few years.

Whether it’s limited-overs or Test cricket, the Indian batting sensation has developed a knack of decimating the opposition bowlers with his majestic batting display. Currently ranked No. 1 in both ODIs and T20Is, only a handful of batsmen can match the influence Kohli tends to have on the opposition in international cricket.

Owing to his exploits, it’s only fair that the 28-year-old is probably the most sought-after cricketer in the country. From politicians to celebrities, Kohli’s aggressive batting has clearly floored us all. And, we bet, that’s probably one of the things that helped Kohli to woo Bollywood hottie Anushka Sharma.

While Kohli and Anushka continue to set new relationship goals for modern-day couple, another Bollywood actress has become the latest addition to the Indian batsman’s fan club.

Kareena, who is celebrating her 37th birthday today, confessed her love for the swashbuckling right-handed batsman. During a recent interview, she showered a lot of praise on Kohli and claimed that he is her favourite batsman.

“I love the way Virat plays. He is my favourite.” When asked if Virat Kohli is soon to become the next Sachin Tendulkar, she stated, “Isn’t he already the next Sachin Tendulkar? After all, he’s the reason why we are winning so many matches in succession,” she said.

Kareena is married to Saif Ali Khan – son of the legendary Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Known as the ‘Tiger’, Pataudi will always be remembered for his contribution to Indian cricket.

At a time when the caste-system had over-ridden the field, the Nawab of Pataudi – despite coming from a family of royals – took it upon himself to unite people to play together as Indians rather than playing in accordance to their respective castes.

Taking over the reins of the Indian team at the age of 21, barely months after being involved in a car accident that would impair the sight in his right eye forever, he led India in 40 of 46 Tests he played in, and won 9 of them.

But more than anything else, he led Indian cricket out of its morass of defeatism and instilled in his fellow cricketers a belief that winning was possible. Under him, India achieved their first overseas Test victory against New Zealand in 1967.

Our very own ‘Desi girl’ has managed to grab headlines not just in India but across the world and it isn’t just about walking the red carpets or her appearances at award shows, anymore. Priyanka Chopra is making sure that she uses her power as a global star for the benefit of the society by urging the global community to come forward and help those who are in dire need.

Adding to her list of achievements, PeeCee recently got behind the production wheel of ‘Pahuna – The Little Visitors’ that even received a standing ovation at Toronto International Film Festival 2017.

‘Pahuna’, which is considered India’s first film in Sikkimese language, talks about the insurgency that forces people in a Nepalese village to flee to Sikkim. It’s the story of three children facing extraordinary circumstances.

Priyanka Chopra Apologises For Her Comments On Sikkim© Purple Pebble Pictures

Though the movie is being critically acclaimed, an interview about it has landed Priyanka in a major controversy. In an interview with an international entertainment website, Priyanka made some comments about the state of Sikkim which paint a rather false image about the conditions in the state. She said, “This is a Sikkimese film. Sikkim is a small state in the North East of India which never had a film industry or anyone who made films from there. And this is the first film ever that’s come out of that region because it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations. I’m very excited,” Priyanka said.

She further talked about the movie’s theme, “This is a film about two kids and their perspective on the refugee crisis, on being moved from one place to another without understanding why they’re suddenly packing bags and leaving. So it speaks about all of that with kids’ perspective.”

Here’s the interview:

But after Twitter and rest of the world lashed out at her, PC has finally apologized to the Sikkim government, while her mother Madhu Chopra spoke to Ugen Gyatso, the tourism minister of Sikkim to apologise for the comment.

Gyatso sought an apology from the actor for her irresponsible remarks, and here’s a copy of Priyanka’s apology:

“I’m sorry I have to write to you under these circumstances.. but I needed to clarify my stance in regards to the situation which has arisen due to a comment of mine during an interview for my film Pahuna, which was misunderstood.

As you are aware, I hold the Government and the people of Sikkim in high regard and have in addition to Pahuna been looking to tell more great stories from Sikkim.

From the moment I heard the script of Pahuna, I knew I wanted to share this story with the world. It is important to me because no one else was willing to take a chance on a film like this, that deals with the refugee crises which is an issue that is being dealt with across the world as it is being in Sikkim.. Pahuna is a film that brings a message of hope and positivity.

My comment, made during an interview at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival 2017, where Pahuna made its worldwide debut, was misconstrued. I was talking about the Sikkimese film industry and also the subject of the film, where I mentioned how Sikkim was grappling with the refugee situation caused by insurgencies.. I had meant by the ‘neighbouring countries’ .. I am fully aware that Sikkim is an incredible host nation (sic) to so many refugees and our film shows exactly that through the children’s point of view…

I understand that the statement I made in the interview was open to interpretation. I should have been clearer with my intention. We’ve made a beautiful film that would not have been possible without the support of the government and people of Sikkim. In no way did I intend to offend or hurt anyone’s sentiments and for that I apologise.

I appreciate all the support you have shown me and my team and I wanted to clear the misunderstanding with you directly.”

Since her statements about Sikkim being a troubled state were inaccurate, Twitter users didn’t spare a moment to bash the actress. The fact that she is the brand ambassador of Assam added fuel to the fire.

While her fans came to her rescue and argued that her messing up like this was a one-time occurrence, people of Sikkim are of the view that if the actress is producing a movie which is meant to release worldwide, the least she could do was get her facts right.

Dear Priyanka Chopra, Sikkim is a peaceful place and #Pahuna is not the first film from the region. Plz get the facts right about NorthEast.

— Biswatosh Sinha (@biswatosh) September 14, 2017

In case you aren’t familiar with what the real conditions in Sikkim are, the state is known for its peace-loving situation and many news reports, in the past, have stated that Sikkim is actually the only state in the North-East that isn’t affected by insurgency.

Bollywood and its experimental nature has resulted in some great work out there. However, there’s one theme that no one has dabbled with, something filmmakers are wary of doing and even the society sweeps it away under the carpet. It’s the whole issue of dealing with incest. Just because a major part of our upbringing has been about not addressing it, doesn’t mean that the elephant is not in the room. However, that is going to change now with a new movie called ‘I Am Roshni’.

This Movie Is India's First Attempt At Dealing With Incest© crescendo films

The movie is India’s first major attempt at dealing with incest and before you jump on the car that leads your brain to some kind of judgement, calm down. The trailer gives us a peek of what the makers have tried to do. A perverted uncle, an insensitive mother, a weird boyfriend and a violent father are some of the characters which are actually a reflection of the people around us. How they and a bounded life pushes Roshni (the lead) to get intimate with her brother is what the story is all about.

This Movie Is India's First Attempt At Dealing With Incest© crescendo films

The movie is produced by Crescendo and the nature is nowhere sleazy.

The movie has a strong social message that urges families to identify all kinds of abuses and have an open relationship with their kids. The movie stars two newcomers in the lead.
