Ahead of his Goa gig, American musician Derulo on his love for Indian culture

“I’m bringing the biggest party to Goa,” exclaims American musician-dancer Jason Derulo, who will take the stage at Timeout 72 in Goa on December 27. Considering it’s his first performance in the country, he has pulled out all stops for his Indian fans. “I’ll play some of my biggest hits including Swalla, Talk Dirty, Whatcha Say, Wiggle and Get Ugly. I have my best dancers and musicians coming along with me, so it’s going to be a grand theatrical show.”

The musician says that his visit will also give him an opportunity to get familiar with Indian music – something he has been keen to explore. “I have heard of Indian music. Unfortunately, I don’t know the names of any artiste. But I’d love to see how I could collaborate with some Indian musicians and work on a Bollywood project someday,” he says. Excited about his trip, Derulo is looking forward to exploring the culinary treats that the country offers. “India is known for its cultural diversity and I’m excited to experiment with some Indian food. I always wanted to try the naan and curries.”

The It Girl hitmaker is known to be vocal about his fight against racism – earlier this year, he had accused an American airline of racial discrimination. He feels it’s important to question the ill practice. “Seeing the tough times around the world, I’m glad I decided to lend my voice and use my powers to fight [racism]. I will continue to do my part. I’ll always stand for what’s right,” says Derulo, adding that he encounters discrimination even today.
