Arguably one of the most popular and consistent batsmen in modern-day cricket, Virat Kohli has won accolades and continues to grow his fanbase in every corner of the globe. The Indian captain has undeniably been the driving force behind India’s meteoric rise in cricket over the past few years.

Whether it’s limited-overs or Test cricket, the Indian batting sensation has developed a knack of decimating the opposition bowlers with his majestic batting display. Currently ranked No. 1 in both ODIs and T20Is, only a handful of batsmen can match the influence Kohli tends to have on the opposition in international cricket.

Owing to his exploits, it’s only fair that the 28-year-old is probably the most sought-after cricketer in the country. From politicians to celebrities, Kohli’s aggressive batting has clearly floored us all. And, we bet, that’s probably one of the things that helped Kohli to woo Bollywood hottie Anushka Sharma.

While Kohli and Anushka continue to set new relationship goals for modern-day couple, another Bollywood actress has become the latest addition to the Indian batsman’s fan club.

Kareena, who is celebrating her 37th birthday today, confessed her love for the swashbuckling right-handed batsman. During a recent interview, she showered a lot of praise on Kohli and claimed that he is her favourite batsman.

“I love the way Virat plays. He is my favourite.” When asked if Virat Kohli is soon to become the next Sachin Tendulkar, she stated, “Isn’t he already the next Sachin Tendulkar? After all, he’s the reason why we are winning so many matches in succession,” she said.

Kareena is married to Saif Ali Khan – son of the legendary Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Known as the ‘Tiger’, Pataudi will always be remembered for his contribution to Indian cricket.

At a time when the caste-system had over-ridden the field, the Nawab of Pataudi – despite coming from a family of royals – took it upon himself to unite people to play together as Indians rather than playing in accordance to their respective castes.

Taking over the reins of the Indian team at the age of 21, barely months after being involved in a car accident that would impair the sight in his right eye forever, he led India in 40 of 46 Tests he played in, and won 9 of them.

But more than anything else, he led Indian cricket out of its morass of defeatism and instilled in his fellow cricketers a belief that winning was possible. Under him, India achieved their first overseas Test victory against New Zealand in 1967.

Divya DuttaDivya Dutta

Divya Dutta had to overcome her fear of claustrophobia while shooting for Kushan Nandy’s Babumoshai Bandookbaaz. One of the scenes required the actor to be buried neck-deep in mud.

The scene was shot in an open land in Lucknow in the scorching heat of summer. Divya stayed put for over three hours till the shoot wrapped up. Hope she managed to overcome her  fear of closed spaces.

Not many know that Neetu Chandra and actor-singer Karan Oberoi are buddies. Karan recently rendered her favourite track Yeh Moh Moh Ke Dhaage from Dam Lagake Haisha (2015) and sent her a video link.

As Karan was tied up with his film, Strawberry Point, he was unable to catch up with Neetu and also missed her birthday bash last month. So this was his way of making up. Are they just friends? Hmmm…

The Big Picture

This could be a momentous Test match. From England’s point of view, a win or a draw would secure a series victory in India for the first time since 1984-85. For a new captain, Alastair Cook, that would be a herculean achievement, especially given the various issues he has had to deal with in the early months of his leadership.

Then there is India. It would be foolish to write them off despite the margins of defeat in the last two matches, but there is a feeling of significant change being on the horizon. Although a series-levelling win could buy key figures some time, (despite papering over cracks being dangerous) it is not inconceivable that a series loss will see the end of MS Dhoni as captain, the end of Sachin Tendulkar and the end of Duncan Fletcher as coach. That ‘perfect storm’ scenario is unlikely, but even the fact it warrants discussion highlights India’s predicament.

As has been the case ahead of each Test in this series, the pitch has been the focus of much attention although, sadly for comedic effect, there hasn’t been the sight of a groundsman being in the middle of a row. What do India think is best? England have shown over the last two matches that they are comfortable on a variety of surfaces. It was the slowest, lowest, pitch of series, in Ahmedabad, that caused them most problems.

It’s a sign of the problems England have had in 2012 that defeat in this Test would make it the most losses they have suffered in a calendar year. However, some big lessons have been learned and there is a sense that the team is back on track. Finishing with a series win in India would be substantial proof of that.

Watch out for…

Test match No. 194 for Sachin Tendulkar. Could it be his last? Nobody knows what he is thinking about the future, but his powers are waning. There is a series against Australia next year, so maybe that will be time when he goes, but sooner rather than later the day will come for India. Does it need to be dragged out to a bitter end? This is not to say he can’t score runs – he fought doggedly for his 76 in Kolkata – but this is not the Sachin Tendulkar who has entertained the world for more than two decades.

James Anderson produced one his finest overseas performances in Kolkata and even three wickets in each innings did not do justice to the skill he showed. He may well need a similar return in Nagpur and it is looking as though he’ll have an even greater burden on his shoulders after the emergence of Steven Finn’s injury. There is also the opportunity for one last duel with Tendulkar. The pair will not meet again at Test level.

Team news

There will be at least two changes for India after Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh were dropped, but such is the state of chaos around the team it is not clear which way they’ll go. It might be back to three frontline spinners, meaning a recall for Piyush Chawla, and Ajinkya Rahane, who averages 63.35 in first-class cricket, could debut at No. 6. The other options include Ravindra Jadeja as an allrounder at No. 6 with a balanced attack. Ashok Dinda and Parvinder Awana were both playing Ranji Trophy until yesterday so have not had much time with the squad.

India (possible) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Virat Kohli, 6 Ajinkya Rahane, 7 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Pragyan Ojha

England have been hit by a significant blow with Finn suffering a back injury, which makes him very doubtful. Stuart Broad is ruled out, so Tim Bresnan appears favourite to replace him, despite a poor year in Test cricket, although Graham Onions would also have a strong case. There are suggestions that Samit Patel’s spot at No. 6 could go to Jonny Bairstow. Patel has not looked out of his depth, despite not converting starts into a substantial score, and it would be a harsh omission.

England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Nick Compton, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Samit Patel, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar

Pitch and conditions

“White and dry,” was the basic description of the pitch on the eve of the Test. It had not been watered for two days so it will spin, the question is how much and how soon. The weather won’t be an issue with daytime temperatures in the low 30s.

Stats and trivia

If Alastair Cook has another successful Test he could rise to the No. 1 batsman in Test cricket. England have not had the top-ranked batsman since Michael Vaughan in 2003.

Only three England batsmen have scored four hundreds in a series – Herbert Sutcliffe (twice), Wally Hammond and Denis Compton

Jason Krejza, the Australia offspinner, made his memorable (for right and wrong reasons) debut on this ground in 2008 ending with match figures of 12 for 358. Two years later, Dale Steyn took 7 for 51 after finding considerable reverse swing.

Quotes

“We have kept it really close, and the good thing is we are enjoying cricket, which at times you don’t tend to do when you go through a rough patch. When it comes to dressing-room atmosphere, it’s looking great.”MS Dhoni insists everything is fine off the field

“Everyone knows how important this game is, but as a player you’ve got to take that emotion out of it. We’ve got to continue on the same path. We know how hard we’ve worked over these last couple of games, and we’ve got to do it again.”Alastair Cook does what he does best. Keeps it simple

Players/Officials: Mohinder Amarnath | MS Dhoni

Mohinder Amarnath, the former India selector, has said it was the BCCI president, N Srinivasan, who overruled the selectors’ unanimous call for sacking of MS Dhoni as captain after the two whitewashes in England and Australia. “The Board President did not approve the unanimous decision to replace Mahendra Singh Dhoni,” Amarnath told CNN-IBN.

Post the Test debacle in Australia, Amarnath said, the selectors wanted to appoint a young captain for the triangular one-day series that followed, but their decision was overturned.

“We selected the team for the triangular series, selected 17 players but we did not select the captain,” he said. “The captain was selected by somebody else.”

Asked whether he questioned the decision, Amarnath said, “When you respect a person you don’t ask questions. But my question is, you have a selection committee those who think what is best for Indian cricket then why they are not given a free hand.

The selectors thought about stepping down then, Amarnath said, but decided against it as they, “did not want to create a big stir there as the team was playing abroad and the series was going on there.”

There was massive speculation that this was the reason Amarnath’s term as a selector ended abruptly when he was actually expected to be the new chairman of the selectors. When asked about that, all Amarnath said was: “I don’t miss it.”

Amarnath was asked to clarify a rumour doing the rounds that he was cited the BCCI constitution that stated he could not sack Dhoni without the higher-ups clearing it. “Neither will I say yes nor will I deny it, okay,” he responded. “I know the facts, and I will tell you the facts when I feel the time is right.” He did go on to say, though, that he was not aware of the constitution. Clause 13(a)(iv) of the BCCI constitution states that: “The President shall approve the composition of a team, selected by the Selection Committee.”

“When somebody becomes a selector, I don’t think you are aware of the constitution of the BCCI,” he said. “I was not aware. I don’t think even the current committee is aware of the constitution.”

According to the Indian Express, Amarnath, Narendra Hirwani and Raja Venkat, during a meeting in January this year for selecting the squad for the CB Series in Australia, wanted to sack Dhoni.

“Sanjay Jagdale, the BCCI secretary and convener of the national selection committee, consulted BCCI president N Srinivasan who shot down the proposal. Srinivasan made it clear that though the majority of the selectors felt that Dhoni didn’t inspire confidence as Test skipper the time was not right to remove him,” a selector told the paper.

Why does Amarnath think Dhoni doesn’t deserve a place in the Test side? “If you see his track record for the last one year as captain, I am talking about Test matches, not one-day, he hasn’t done anything,” Amarnath said. “You give a run to a guy. I am not saying you should remove a guy overnight, but if you see a guy is failing again and again, I don’t think it is going to be possible to continue with the same guy.

“I think he should be replaced in Test cricket. I am not talking shorter versions. He is an asset there, he has done very well, he is a match-winner, but with the technique he has I don’t see him do any wonders in Test cricket.

“You have to look at contribution of the players, where you are playing and what opposition you are playing. We have to move ahead with times, and we have to look forward. People who have contributed to the game, we respect them, we adore them, but what is important is future of Indian cricket and not to live in the past. Cricket has changed, age has everything to do in life. We have to look ahead.

“I believe in fresh blood. I was looking forward for a guy like Virat Kohli to take over as captain in one day cricket. I think he is a fantastic player, he is the future.”

When Amarnath spoke about moving forward, he was asked about Sachin Tendulkar and what his future should be. “Sachin has been a great cricketer, a great ambassador, he has achieved everything but I think they way he is playing we see a shadow of Sachin Tendulkar,” he said. “And I don’t accept him to play in the same fashion as he has done in the past. Age is a factor. He is not alone. Look at all greats. Once you cross mid-30s, things become little bit difficult, a little bit more demanding. He is no exception. He has to take it very seriously, and I think the selectors have to have a word with him, what are his plans. Then they should take a call and then decide.”

Dropping non-performers is correct decisionRajkot: Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Tuesday backed the selectors` decision to drop Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh from the team for the fourth and final Test against England but is hopeful that both will make a comeback in the squad.

“The selectors` decision to keep non-performing players out of the team is proper,” the former skipper told reporters when asked about the axing of the off-spinner and the stylish batsman.

“Not only these two but all those who are not performing should be rested,” he said.

The cricketer-turned-politician, who is currently a Congress MP, was here to campaign for his party in the Gujarat Assembly election.

He, however, said Harbhajan and Yuvraj are good players and they would surely come back in Team India. “They have plenty of cricket left in them and would surely come back in the national side.”

Asked about Sachin Tendulkar`s retirement, Azharuddin said “Sachin is a great player and let him and selectors decide about his future.”

“The selection committee is the proper body to decide about who should play and who should retire,” said the veteran of 99 Tests and 334 ODIs.
