Meanwhile, in Mumbai, the makers of Padmaavat have approached the police for Special Task Force protection in city theatres, multiplexes

Even as the makers of Padmaavat have requested police protection in Mumbai and other places, Rani Mahendra Kanwar of Bassi, Chittorgarh, has said that Bhansali is fooling people and would have consulted the Maharana of Mewar if his intentions were honest.

With less than 48 hours to go before the paid previews of Padmaavat on January 24, the protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s drama only seem to be getting more intense. A day after 200 Rajput women held a protest march in Rajasthan, Rani Mahendra Kanwar of Bassi, Chittorgarh (vice-president, Jauhar Smriti Sansthan) told mid-day that distributors have assured her that the film won’t be screened in the state.

“The distributors have promised us they won’t showcase the film. They, too, do not support Padmaavat in any way,” said Kanwar, pointing out how Rajput women have ratcheted up the pressure with memorandums to government officials to give them permission to end their lives, in the event of the film’s release. “We are holding peace protest march every day. But our women have threatened to commit suicide if the movie hits screens.”

The Supreme Court is slated to hear the pleas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh today, seeking recall of its January 18 orders allowing the film to be screened across the nation. However, Kanwar said that the Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor-starrer won’t find a place in Rajasthan. “We respect the law, but can’t have anyone dishonouring our community.” When pointed out that the makers had made the necessary modifications recommended by the Censor Board, she said, “Bhansali is saying that it’s a work of fiction. Then why has he named his characters Alauddin Khilji and Rawal Ratan Singh? Bhansali is fooling people. If he had honest intentions, he would’ve sought permission from the Maharana of Mewar, Arvind Singhji.”

A distributor based out of Rajasthan, on the condition of anonymity, revealed that his peers have indeed decided to wash their hands off the film. “Many fringe groups are protesting against it; we don’t want to burn our fingers by going against them. It’s better to earn less than to incur damages,” he said. While protests continued in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh yesterday, Karni Sena founder Lokendra Singh Kalvi agreed to watch the magnum opus on Bhansali’s invitation before its release.

‘Padmaavat’ just cannot stop with all the controversies. And all we are wondering is when will it end? Even though the highly anticipated movie finally got a clearance from the censor board recently, it still hasn’t been an easy ride.

There are still a bunch of people who are protesting against it and Sanjay Leela Bhansali is struggling with different aspects of the movie now as well. They are still trying their best to not offend anyone, but everyday some new problem crops up. So many cuts and the change of the name wasn’t enough, everyone just keeps finding new problems.

Deepika Padukone's Midriff Had To Be Covered With CGI

And, the latest one to join the long list of objections about the movie is Deepika Padukone’s midriff.   Basically Deepika’s 3-inch bare mid-riff from the song ‘Ghoomar’ has been edited out using VFX effects, as per the instructions of the CBFC and the protests by Karni Sena. Why? Because showing any kind of skin is ‘unsanskari’, obviously. How can people control themselves after seeing Deepika’s stomach? It would have been just too much to handle.

Thank God they caught it in time, otherwise there would have been chaos in the theatres after seeing Deepika’s midriff. Just look at the unedited version, there’s just so much skin.

Now, look at the new version which is so much better. No skin, nothing to distract people. So what the song had to be edited so much that it is 2 minutes shorter now? It’s very ‘sanskari’ and that’s the main thing.

I honestly can’t believe we live in a country where someone’s midriff is a very important issue, I don’t know whether I should laugh or cry.

Well, it seems like I’m not alone in this confusion. Here’s what people on Twitter are saying.

Welcome!

So Deepika’s midriff has been digitally covered in the new version of #ghoomar!!!
Welcome to Saudi Arabia !! #Padmavat #Padmavati #KarniSena #Fringe

— Amar Butala (@amarbutala) January 19, 2018

How to make a big issue out of anything.

Watched Ghoomar and honestly can’t understand what’s the fuss about till they had to edit Deepika’s midriff. Of all things to find fault, that slight skin showing got them worked out till the need to edit it? pic.twitter.com/vPmr4v2Mub

— diwaniladki (@diwaniladki) January 20, 2018

Thankfully, it was changed before the release.

happy to announce that Hindu culture has been saved. the video of ‘Ghoomar’ on YouTube has been replaced by one that uses CGI to ‘cover up’ three inches of bare midriff. bee em kay jay. https://t.co/zehHZ1AiBf

— I’m CONCERNED about the environment (@schmaltzdisney) January 19, 2018

Just release the movie, please.

Pretty confident Padmavat will not release on Jan 25. Various chief ministers imposing bans, historical and geographical references muted, vfx to cover Deepika’s midriff, those Karni morons continuing to holler… Shameful, but the idiots are winning.

— Raja Sen (@RajaSen) January 13, 2018

Yes, it’s a personal attack.

This is the right thing to do. Deepika Padukone’s midriff always offends me when I look down at my ownhttps://t.co/i3Uf3uo3BU

— Veena Venugopal (@veenavenugopal) January 13, 2018

When will this end?

They literally covered Deepika’s midriff with the help of CGI effect. Hadh hai matlab !! #padmaavat pic.twitter.com/2qUfSPyIQB

— LOLendra Singh (@LOLendraSingh) January 19, 2018

Well, that’s one way to look at it.

Thank god they covered up Deepika’s midriff. It was giving me a major inferiority complex.

— Shilpa Rathnam (@shilparathnam) January 19, 2018

Same.

OH MY GOD THEY COVERED DEEPIKA’S MIDRIFF I AM SAD BUT THIS IS HILARIOUS MY COUNTRY IS SUCH A JOKE https://t.co/MtZXTJCzUE

As first reported in mid-day, Padmaavat makers cite Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan as precedent to overturn state governments’ ban

It was a victory of freedom of expression as the Supreme Court yesterday cleared Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat for release, by staying the ban imposed by the governments of several states including Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, the bench said it is the duty of states to maintain law and order and that the creative content is an inseparable aspect of Article 19 (1), freedom of speech and expression.

As told to mid-day (January 18 edition), the producers’ counsel cited the example of Prakash Jha’s caste-reservation drama Aarakshan (2011), which was banned in certain states until the SC overturned the decision. Using that as precedent, the legal team argued that once the Censor Board has certified a movie, no state can ban it. It also argued that the makers had complied with the changes recommended by the Censor Board.

For an industry that largely shied away from commenting on the Padmaavat issue through Bhansali’s months-long battle, it welcomed the SC decision with open arms. Shabana Azmi, one of the few actors to initiate a petition asking PM Narendra Modi to offer protection to Deepika Padukone, said, “I welcome the decision. But there remains the unresolved matter of no action being taken against those who placed a bounty on Deepika’s head. Immediate action needs to be taken against these criminal elements so as to send out a clear signal to the country that the dignity of women is supreme and neither abusive language nor violent threats will go unpunished.”

Director Hansal Mehta reiterated how the banning of a film that has been cleared by the CBFC in the first place, is unconstitutional. “It’s a good sign that the Supreme Court has upheld the decision. The entire team of Padmaavat can heave a sigh of relief.”

Raza Murad, who plays Jalaluddin Khilji in the magnum opus, described it as a “victory of democracy.” “I think true change can be brought about when the government deals with people who create nuisance with an iron hand.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali breathes free as the Supreme Court clears release of the historical drama using the film Aarakshan as precedent; Bollywood veterans critique two-faced government

The Supreme Court this morning cleared Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial period drama, Padmaavat, by suspending the ban orders of six states – Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. A bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud considered the submission of the counsel of Viacom 18 and other producers of the film that the plea be heard urgently as the movie was set for all-India release on January 25.

The court said it is the duty of states to maintain law and order and that the creative content is an inseparable aspect of article 19 (1), freedom of speech and expression. CJI Dipak Misra said in his comments that the states can take a call in case violence erupts after release, but cannot preempt reaction or ban a film before release. The bench was hearing a writ petition filed by Agarwal Law Associates on behalf of Viacom 18 and Bhansali Productions, seeking the quashing of a ban on the release of the film.

The producers moved the top court through senior lawyer Harish Salve and advocate Mahesh Agarwal and submitted, in the petition, that the movie has undergone changes including in its title and the Ghoomar song as suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They cited the example of Prakash Jha’s controversial 2011 film, Aarakshan, which looked at caste reservation in education.

It was considered anti-Dalit and banned across several states, before the SC cleared its release. Using that as a precedent, the legal team argued that once the Censor Board has certified a movie, no state can ban it. Salve said, “If states are banning a film, then it [ban] is destroying [the] federal structure. It is a serious matter. If somebody has a problem, then he or she can approach the appellate tribunal for relief. [The] state can’t touch the content of a film.”

A source close to the production house told mid-day, “The Supreme Court has passed an order upholding the freedom of speech and directing the states to maintain law and order relying on Prakash Jha’s case of Aarakshan. This is another landmark case, where the Apex court has upheld freedom of speech and expression again, recognising that the state is duty bound to maintain law and order when the CBFC has certified a film. The principle laid down in the case of Aarakshan has been upheld.”

Padman’s makers have said the film’s January 25 release date will not change amid speculation that Padmavati may hit theatres the same day

Putting all speculations to rest, the makers of Padman have said the film’s January 25 release date will not change. Speculations were rife that Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed Padmavati may hit theatres the same day. B-town is abuzz that Padmavati, which has been making headlines due to its plot line, is set to release on January 25 – the same day as the Akshay Kumar-starrer Padman. The producers of the film, however, said they have no clue about Padmavati release or the possible box-office clash between the two films.

“I am clueless what is happening… with clash. I have no idea about it. Even we have heard about it. All we know is Padman is releasing on January 25. Akshay announced it officially. Padmavati is a very important film. It’s a beautiful film and it should release soon. I am also looking forward to seeing it. It depends on Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions to decide on the date,” Prerna Arora, one of the producers of Padman, told PTI.

Asked if the makers will push the release date of Padman to avoid any potential box-office clash with the big-budget period drama, Prerna said, “We are coming on January 25.” Sources close to the team of Padman said no one from the team of Padmavati has had any talks about the possible clash. Some reports even suggest that Padmavati might come out on February 9.

Anushka Sharma’s next home production venture Pari and director Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, starring Kartik Aaryan, are slated to release on February 9. “I see no sense in clashing with a big film like ‘Padmavati’ and harming the best release my film can get. If ‘Padmavati’ comes on February 9 I will change the release date of my film,” Luv Ranjan told PTI.

“We are coming on February 9, we are waiting for the official announcement on ‘Padmavati’ release date, so till then we cannot comment,” said Prerna. Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions remained unavailable for comment regarding the speculation over the release date of Padmavati. The film, which was earlier scheduled to hit cinema houses on December 1, features Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the lead.

Recently, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decided to give the film a U/A certification along with some modifications and suggested change of the film’s title to ‘Padmavat’.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not suggested any cuts in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmavati”, but has asked for five modifications for the movie to get a U/A certificate, censor board chairperson Prasoon Joshi clarified on Saturda

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not suggested any cuts in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’, but has asked for five modifications for the movie to get a U/A certificate, censor board chairperson Prasoon Joshi clarified on Saturday. Uncertainty has been looming large over the movie’s release since a few months, but on Saturday, CBFC — following a examining committee meeting — said it has decided to give a U/A certificate to the movie subject to modifications.

Setting the record straight, Joshi told IANS via email: “There are no cuts suggested in this film by CBFC, only five modifications.”

He said they have asked the makers to change the disclaimer “clearly to one that does not claim historical accuracy”.

Regarding the film’s title “Padmavati”, Joshi said the discussed change is to “Padmavat” as the filmmakers have attributed their material/creative source as the fictional poem “Padmavat” and not history.

CBFC has also asked the makers to modify the song “Ghoomar” to make the depiction befitting the character being portrayed.

That apart, they have demanded modification in the “incorrect/misleading reference to historical places”, Joshi said.

Additionally, they have asked the makers to “add a disclaimer which clearly makes the point that the film in no manner subscribes to the practice of Sati or seeks to glorify it”.

Joshi said these suggested changes “are completely in agreement with the filmmakers — the producers and director of the film”.

“Padmavati”, backed by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, is directed by Bhansali and features Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapur in lead roles.

The film, which was to release on December 1, has been embroiled in controversy over alleged distortion of facts regarding Rajput history, with Rajput outfits and some backed by the BJP, actively protesting its release.

A Parliamentary committee summoned Bhansali in November to resolve the issue, and the filmmaker had clarified that the “controversy over the film is based on rumours”.

“I have not distorted facts. The film is based on a poem by Malik Muhammad Jayasi,” referring to the 16th century Indian sufi poet’s epic poem “Padmavat”.

The CBFC then set up a special panel to watch the movie. The screening was held on December 28.

Joshi was present along with the examining committee members and the special panel, which comprised Arvind Singh from Udaipur, Chandramani Singh and Professor K.K. Singh of the Jaipur University.

“A long discussion ensued post which the filmmakers were met as well. The members of the panel had insights and also some reservations regarding the claimed historical events and socio-cultural aspects which were duly discussed at length,” Joshi said.

He said a special panel was set up “considering the complexities and concerns around the film” and “to add perspective to the final decision of the CBFC official committee”.

Joshi said the filmmakers, Bhansali Productions, “in a written communication to CBFC had themselves too requested for a special panel of historians/academicians and members of the Rajput community to view the film”.

Having a special panel was not a new precedent set by CBFC.

“(I) Can cite two examples; ‘Aarkashan’ wherein an eminent panel representing a concerned group was created and also in case of ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ wherein historical experts were called in.”

Overall, Joshi said giving the movie U/A certification “was an unprecedented and tough situation”.

“I am glad that following a balanced approach, we resolved the task at hand in a pragmatic and positive manner.”

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has decided to give a U/A certificate ‘along with some modifications’ to Sanjay Leela Bhansalis controversial film “Padmavati” and has asked the filmmaker to “likely” change the movies title to ‘Padmavat

Deepika Padukone in PadmavatiDeepika Padukone in the movie ‘Padmavati’

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has decided to give a U/A certificate ‘along with some modifications’ to Sanjay Leela Bhansalis controversial film “Padmavati” and has asked the filmmaker to “likely” change the movies title to ‘Padmavat’. The film was also asked to give a few disclaimers — one of them regarding not glorifying the practice of Sati and also relevant modifications in the song “Ghoomar” to befit the character portrayed, a CBFC statement said.

The decision was taken after an examining committee meeting was held on Thursday in presence of CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi. The special panel consisted of Arvind Singh from Udaipur, Dr Chandramani Singh and professor K.K. Singh of Jaipur University.

According to the CBFC, the film was approached with a “balanced view keeping in mind both the filmmakers and the society”. The board asked for several cuts, and a name change, before giving the film the certification for showing in theatres in India. According to some reports, 26 cuts were ordered.

Considering the complexities and concerns around the film, the requirement for a special panel was felt by CBFC “to add perspective to the final decision of the official committee,” the CBFC said.

The final 3D application of the film was submitted to CBFC on Thursday (December 28).

The certificate will be issued once the required modifications are carried out and final material submitted, the board said.
