Ali Fazal to open cultural venue in hometown where artistes across fields can display their skills

The Lucknow leg of the shoot of Ali Fazal’s upcoming venture, Milan Talkies, doubled up as a work trip for another project too. The actor tells mid-day that he met with theatre owners to understand the kind of performing art outlets the city houses, given that he intends to open one soon. Since Lucknow — also Fazal’s hometown — is known to breed talented authors, poets and dancers, the actor hopes a cultural hub can serve as that platform where artistes can display their skills.

“Given that I belong to Lucknow, I wanted to give back to my hometown, the place where I grew up. This is my passion project. The city is so rich in culture,” says Fazal, adding that he will soon zero in on a location. The venue will have both, an indoor and an outdoor space, where events, workshops and panel discussions will be held. Musical gigs, like open mic sessions will be conducted at the open space, while plays and dances will be held at the auditorium.

“The venue will be divided in two parts. A larger space will accommodate a group of 90 people, while another outlet for intimate gatherings can house about 30 people. The open space can also be used for workshops for children during their school breaks,” Fazal says. The actor’s venture will be distanced from the influence of any government body. “It’s a private project and I intend to keep it that way.”

Salman Khan was rumoured to feature in a special dance number for Isabelle Kaif’s debut film, Time To Dance. However, it has been learnt that the superstar has decided to sit it out.

The Stanley D’Costa-directed movie will see Kaif as a ballroom dancer to Sooraj Pancholi’s street dancer. A source reveals, “The protagonists will be seen performing various dance styles including waltz and Tango.”

“Salman is not comfortable with these dance forms. Also, he wants to focus on his Da-Bangg Tour, and then, Bharat. Since the movie will demand most of his time, Salman decided to bow out of the commitment.” Khan’s team remained unavailable for comment.

Actor Jackie Chan’s estranged gay daughter and her partner claim they have been homeless and have been sleeping under a bridge “due to homophobic parents”. Etta Ng, 18, and her girlfriend Andi Autumn posted a short video to YouTube last week claiming that they have run out of options because their friends and family have refused to offer them support, reports people.com.

“We have been homeless for a month due to homophobic parents. We pretty much slept under a bridge, and other things,” Ng said. “We have gone to the police, we have gone to the hospitals, the food banks, the LGBTQ community shelters and all of them just don’t give a s***,” she continued. Autumn added: “We will have to be split up if we go to any kind of government facility.”

“We don’t know what to do at this point,” Ng continued. “We just want to let people know what’s going on because at this point it seems ridiculous that no one can help. I don’t understand.” Ng is Chan’s daughter with former beauty queen Elaine Ng, with whom the actor had a relationship with while married to his current wife Joan Lin.

The actor, who made $49 million last year according to Forbes, has not spoken publicly about his daughter but has acknowledged he had an affair. Elaine denounced her daughter’s claims, saying she needs to find a job.

“I feel that if they have no money, they should go find work,” she said. “They shouldn’t film a clip telling others they are broke and who Etta’s father is. People all over the world work hard and don’t rely on someone else’s fame to get money.”

According to multiple sources who spoke to US celebrity website TMZ, celebrated DJ and music producer Avicii took his life in Muscat. The musician’s body was found on April 20 in Oman. While no reason was given for his untimely demise at 28 then, reports of his frail health caused by excessive drinking since 2016 began to hit headlines again.”

However, the website described in some detail the alleged circumstances that led to his death. Multiple sources reportedly said that Avicii, whose real name is Tim Bergling, committed suicide using a shard of glass “that caused massive bleeding”. Two sources said the shards came from a broken liquor bottle. The development comes close on the heels of the statement released by Avicii’s family last week, wherein they had alluded that he could have taken his life. Bergling’s family said that he “could not go on any longer” and “wanted to find peace.”

He had retired from touring in 2016 citing a series of health concerns that included acute pancreatitis, in part due to excessive drinking. In a documentary titled Avicii: True Stories, released in October last year, he also repeatedly warned that the touring lifestyle was going to kill him, but he was still being pressured to continue. An official police report and cause of death have not yet been released, but Police in Oman said is they found “no criminal suspicion” in the case.

Sanjay Dutt has resumed shooting for Girish Malik’s Torbaaz in Kyrgyztan. After a stint of shooting last year in the central Asian country, there was buzz that the film was riddled with production issues. The project is now back on track. Dutt has been posting snapshots from the shoot on Instagram. He celebrated the birthday of one of the child actors, Wahib Iqbal Kapadia, on the set recently.

With the teaser of Sanju having released last week, Ranbir Kapoor‘s seamless transformation into Sanjay Dutt has been appreciated by his fans and naysayers alike. While director Rajkumar Hirani was convinced that only Kapoor could do justice to the multi-dimensional character, the actor revealed that he was initially hesitant about taking up the role.

“When Raju sir [Hirani] told me about this film, my first instinct was that I won’t be able to do this. I felt I didn’t have the courage and the acting chops to pull off this role. This is not just an acting gig for me. I took up this film as an opportunity to be part of a story of someone whom I consider my icon,” said Ranbir Kapoor of the project that will arguably go on to become one of the landmark films of his career.

Although he knew Sanjay Dutt socially, Kapoor said the script brought to the fore the different facets of the star that he was otherwise unaware about. “As a family friend, I have always known a different Sanjay Dutt. As his fan, I knew him as a style icon, knew his mannerisms and his swag. But when I read the script, it shocked me. From his drug [abuse] to his terrorism controversy, from his equation with his father [Sunil Dutt] to how the passing away of his mother [Nargis Dutt] affected him, everything shocked me.”

The biopic, which also stars Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Paresh Rawal and Manisha Koirala in prominent roles, sees Kapoor sport six different looks as he traces Dutt’s journey from a 22-year-old debutant in Rocky (1981) to his release from jail in 2016. Talking about the physical transformation that he had to undergo for different portions of the movie, Kapoor said, “The shooting of the film was spaced out, so we had enough time to prepare. After every segment, I almost had a month to prepare for the next avatar. So, in that sense, it wasn’t difficult at all.”

The film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Madhuri Dixit-Nene. Earlier, Karan Johar revealed the poster of the film. With several ruins and offset colours, the poster gave off major old-world vibes.

Helmed by Abhishek Varman, the epic period drama is going to be set in the 1940s, around the hard times faced by India and Pakistan. Produced by Fox Star Studios, Dharma Productions, and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the movie is slated to release on April 19, 2019.
