Prosthetic artist Dr Suresh Murkey on how 35-year-old Ranbir Kapoor transformed into 58-year-old Sanjay Dutt for Sanju

Days after Ranbir Kapoor unveiled the teaser of Sanju, prosthetic specialist Dr Suresh Murkey has been showered with praise yet again. The renowned artiste has been credited for his finery in films like Guru (Abhishek Bachchan), The Dirty Picture (Vidya Balan), and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (Kangana Ranaut). This time, however, a solo film has enabled him to create four distinct looks for Kapoor, so that the latter can resemble Sanjay Dutt over the years.

One assumes it must have taken multiple meetings with Dutt for Murkey to have memorised such nitty-gritties of his appearance. However, the artiste says that an interaction with the actor is still pending. “Rajkumar Hirani [director] gave me some photographs of Dutt through different stages of his life. It was based on the pictures that I designed Ranbir’s prosthetics. I took four sets of measurements of Ranbir’s face in order to minimise any scope of error,” says Murkey.

In a bid to replicate a young Dutt from the ’90s, Murkey worked on the lower half of Kapoor’s face. “I needed to make Ranbir’s jaw bone look different to resemble Dutt’s, and make his cheeks look puffy, especially near the lips. In order to add age to his face for the latter part of the film, prosthetics were worn on the upper part of his mouth so that his cheeks could look fuller near the nose and below the eyes,” he says, pointing out that his cue was the Bhoomi actor’s look when he was leaving jail. The prosthetics, he informs, were made out of acrylic and a mix that is used in dentures.

Gurmeet Choudhary never dreamt that he would be playing a soldier on screen. His father was determined to make him one whether he became an actor or not

Gurmeet Choudhary

Gurmeet Choudhary is over the moon these days after bagging a pivotal role in JP Dutta’s upcoming war drama Paltan. The actor heaps praise on the filmmaker stating that he captures the real emotion of army life and war effortlessly in his narrative. Gurmeet identifies with the emotion of the story since he hails from an army family himself. He was born in an army hospital.

Gurmeet thus says with complete conviction that no Indian filmmaker can weave such an intricate story like JP Dutta on such a topic. JP Dutta has directed war films like Border and LOC Kargil.

Gurmeet Choudhary never dreamt that he would be playing a soldier on screen. His father was determined to make him one whether he became an actor or not. Gurmeet reveals he passed the running test during the recruitment drive and was selected for the medical test 2-3 days later but left for Mumbai instead. He says father was furious about this saying that very few people pass the running test, yet you decided to abandon it.

Gurmeet called his dad upon getting a part in the film and the latter was overcome with joy as he is a fan of the filmmaker himself. The actor clarified that Paltan isn’t based on the 1962 war but the one that took place on 1967.

Gurmeet Choudhary said that JP Datta treated him and his co-stars as army personnel during the filming of Paltan. They were required to eat together and and travel together in one bus, which took them from their hotel to the sets. This he says was done to build camaraderie between them. Paltan is set to hit theatres soon.

Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor’s effortless performances, coupled with their intoxicating screen presence make 102 Not Out worth watching

102 Not Out
Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor in a still 102 Not Out

102 Not Out
U/A, Comedy-Drama
Director: Umesh Shukla
Actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Jimit Trivedi
Rating: Ratings

“You know this happens often? I know of somebody who went through the same experience,” a woman said to her friend in the theatre. I heard a similar conversation at the preview screening of director Umesh Shukla’s 102 Not Out. Obviously, I wasn’t the only one getting emotionally involved with the tale unfolding on screen.

102 Not Out‘s tale is as old as time. It’s about the sacrifices parents make in order to give their children a good life, only to be rejected by them in their old age. What makes this film different from others based on the same theme is the camaraderie between the two lead actors – Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor. Having played many memorable roles in their long, illustrious careers, the veterans are back together on the big screen after almost three decades, and they are like a house on fire.

Dattatraya Vakharia [Bachchan] is a 102-year-old fun-loving and free-spirited man, who wants to break the world record of living for 118 years, a record held by the Chinese man Wong Chong Tung. On the other hand, Babulal Vakharia [Kapoor] plays his 75-year old son, who is uptight and follows a mundane life. Because of his morose life, Dattatraya decides to send his son to an old-age home, but Babulal disagrees. Dattatraya agrees to stay with him on condition that his son will fulfil a few tasks.

Shukla tries to keep the film breezy, yet high on emotions. The screenplay by Saumya Joshi, who also penned the eponymous Gujarati play that inspired the film, feels patchy at times. Despite some unconvincing moments in the plot, 102 Not Out keeps the viewers involved all the way till the climax. Though the tempo drops considerably in the second half, Shukla ensures that the story doesn’t lose its charm. Admittedly, it does get preachy and you find yourself shifting in your seats when Babulal makes the big climactic revelation to his son that feels forced.

The beauty of the film is that none of its pitfalls eventually matter. The movie wins you over with its innocence and simplicity. Actor Jimit Trivedi, as the errand boy, deserves a special mention as he provides some of the film’s lighter moments with his over-the-top acts. But Bachchan and Kapoor’s effortless performances, coupled with their intoxicating screen presence make this movie worth watching.

The trailer of Naseeruddin Shah’s next film, Hope Aur Hum, was released a few days ago. After releasing the title track of the film, the makers have now released a new song from the film, Acche Bacche Rote Nahin. The song has been sung by Sonu Nigam, music has been composed by Rupert Fernandes and the lyrics have been penned by Saurabh Dikshit.

Watch the song here:

Talking of the earlier track, Hope Aur Hum, that song has been sung by Bhoomi Trivedi and Suraj Jagan. The cast of the film includes an incredible array of talent including Naseeruddin Shah, Sonali Kulkarni, Naveen Kasturia, Aamir Bashir, Kabir Sajid and Virti Vighani. The film has been written and directed by Sudip Bandyopadhyay and produced by Samira Bandyopadhyay.

The story is a reminiscent tale of a family in Mumbai whose lives are explored through an endearing cinematic journey. The plot revolves around the Srivastava family whose lives are affected by the senior most member of the family, Nagesh (Naseeruddin Shah) whose obsession with his traditional copying machine, called Mr. Soennecken, starts to take a toll on the relationship of the entire family. It’s a simple story of human emotions explored through the intertwined lives of each family member. With the family revolting against Nagesh’s old ways, the film tells the tale of the transition between the old and the new, explored through the ideas and idles of three different generations.

It’s a shame really that Omerta lacks depth, never giving an insight into Omar’s criminal designs

Omerta
Rajkummar Rao in a still from Omerta

Omerta
U/A, Drama
Director: Hansal Mehta
Starring: Rajkummar Rao
Rating: Ratings

In a scene in the final act, Hansal Mehta laid open the pivotal reason why he attempted a movie on Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh. A bunch of Pakistani officers who have to arrest Omar for killing Wall Street Journal scribe Daniel Pearl, put it perfectly – You have the making of leader; you are an educated man who can command respect unlike scores of illiterate Jihadis. Which I believe would have been the trigger point for Mehta to consider making a movie on the man. Tracing the journey of this London School of Economics graduate, Mehta walks us through the incidents that could as the highlights of his eventful life – Bosnian genocide, his arrest in India after a failed attempt at kidnapping foreign tourists, his involvement in Kandahar attack, 9/11 and eventually the brutal execution of Pearl. It would have been dreadful if Mehta staged it as a cautionary tale; understandably he didn’t want to glorify Omar. But it isn’t the best thing that at the end of the film, you don’t quite know who Omar is. A large part of the problem lies in the fact that Mehta or his writer Mukul Dev never delve into how a seemingly well-raised, educated man turned to fundamentalism. But skimming through incidents is how Mehta approaches the character. Omar’s ideals are never elucidated; his involvement in 9/11 and Kandahar are conveyed in background narration, sans dialogues, and his marriage to a trophy girl from the creme de le creme of Pak circles is gratuitous. Mehta makes no effort to analyse the psyche of this dreaded criminal. In a folly, I even assumed that Omar was smitten by the rush of power when he tells his Abba (father), how much people respect him.

A fair share of work is, thus, on the shoulders of Rajkummar Rao. You buy into how earnestly committed he is to his part. Never rising above the script, but filling large loopholes of the screenplay with his nuanced act. He demands one to remain invested in the film. The turn of the character from a naive boy consumed by hatred, indoctrinated into Jihad by training to an icy, cold terrorist is reflected in Rao’s demeanor. Of course, he nails it in the scene where he murders Pearl. With a cannibalistic thirst, Rao thrusts the body with a shovel, eventually beheading the scribe and holding up his cut head with a visible satisfaction, will make chills run down your spine.

It’s a shame really that Omerta lacks depth, never giving an insight into Omar’s criminal designs. As a thriller, it’s pacy and yet, distinctly half-baked and stiff. I assure you, this movie could be about one of most dreaded men of our times but this film tells us nothing about the man that a quick google search wouldn’t. As for Rao, a friend rightly puts it – He was good even in Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana; what’s special about this then?

Throwing a contemporary twist to term distastefully hurled at differently-abled, Vishal Dadlani collaborates with band to rehash Dil Toh Pagal Hai track

After celebrated names like Sonu Nigam and Asha Bhosle lent their support to Y-Films and Karan Johar’s band of young musicians last year, the group’s second edition has found its first supporter in Vishal Dadlani. The recently-created band, 6 Pack Band 2.0, a music group comprising teens with special needs, has created a contemporary version of the celebrated title track from Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997).

The remixed version has been rendered by Dadlani. “It means the world to feature in a song with the band. These kids have taught me about life, courage and overcoming obstacles,” Vishal Dadlani says of the children, including Ananya Halarnkar, Anjali Ramesh, Maitreya Matale, Paarth Padhye, Prerna Agarwal and Rishaan Patil. Ashish Patil, creative head, Y-Films, chronicles the reason behind choosing the two-decade-old track.

“The ignorant refer to special needs as pagal. But with this band, we’re driving on the fact that if listening to your heart is madness, then, we’re mad. The lyrics have been rewritten. The chorus hopes to establish that the heart knows what head hasn’t figured out yet. We’ve introduced a modern groove to make the song relevant.” Patil adds that the track was shot at a special needs school, featuring 100 people comprising students, faculty and staff members.

“It’s a dramatic song. We are eyeing a mid-May release.” A teaser released yesterday sees the musician lead the pack of six in a thumping rock concert. A source says, “Vishal’s heart beats for specially-abled children. He has gone the extra mile to support Y Films’ initiative. He hasn’t charged a penny for this venture. He saw some of the work of the members and was mesmerised by their talent.”
