sri_funeralEnd Of An Era As B-Town Celebs And Fans Come Together To Bid Final Adieu To Superstar Sridevi

She had a knack for bringing us together – every time she appeared on the big screen, we, in unison, would be left captivated by her charms. And she did it yesterday again – brought the country together as it bid the final goodbye to India’s first female superstar, Sridevi.

A sea of fans had gathered outside The Celebration Sports Club in Andheri from as early as 4 am yesterday, waiting to catch one last glimpse of Sridevi. The mortal remains were kept at the club, minutes away from her Lokhandwala home, so that fans could pay their last respects to the star who had enthralled them for the past four decades. More than 200 policemen were present at the venue to keep the teeming crowd in check. The hall had three entry points – one each for VIPs, the media and the public.

Inside the hall, Sridevi’s mortal remains were draped in a red Kanjivaram saree with a bindi on her forehead. Sonam and Rhea Kapoor were by daughters Janhvi and Khushi’s side as the two were inconsolable, while Boney Kapoor put on a brave front. Anil and Sanjay Kapoor received the guests. Rani Mukerji, who has often expressed her admiration for the superstar and shared a deep friendship with her, lent her support to the family.

Bollywood came out in full force to pay homage to the actor, who left behind a legacy that very few will be able to match. Madhuri Dixit Nene, who enjoyed a healthy competition with the superstar in their heydays, was one of the first to arrive with husband Sriram Nene.

From yesteryear actors like Hema Malini, Rekha and Rakesh Roshan to the current crop including Ajay Devgn and Kajol, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, B-Town celebs grieved the loss of one of the brightest talents.

Jaya Bachchan walked in with daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai while an emotional Vidya Balan came to bid adieu to her idol. Manish Malhotra, who considered Sridevi his muse and his closest friend, is said to have broken down in the final moments.

At the end of the condolence meet, the icon, who was conferred with Padma Shri in 2013, was given state honours as the Mumbai police offered her the Guard Of Honour and draped her body in the tricolour.

The actor began her final journey as mourners kept jostling for space to catch a glimpse of her cortege as it slowly made its way through the city to the Vile Parle crematorium. Some of the fans even tried to break through the barricades, forcing the police to resort to lathicharge. The body of the 54-year-old, who died in Dubai on Saturday, was taken in a hearse that was bedecked in white flowers. Her filmmaker husband, along with Arjun Kapoor, and other family members were beside her in the hearse.

Several stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Rohit Shetty and Farhan Akhtar came to the crematorium for the last rites. The surging crowd made it difficult for the stars to reach the venue. In fact, Sonam too had a tough time to reach the crematorium. After a few rituals, Boney preformed the mukhaagni [last rites] bidding the final adieu to his wife.

As an important chapter of his life came to an end, Boney issued a statement saying, “I am blessed to have the support of Arjun and Anshula [Kapoor, Boney’s children], who have been such pillars of strength for myself, Khushi and Janhvi. Together as a family we have tried to face this unbearable loss… To the world she was their Chandni, but to me she was my love, mother to our girls… She was the axis around which our family ran… Rest in peace, my love.

salman_ranveerDecember 2018 already seems to be jam-packed with many big ticket films vying for a release. Shah Rukh Khan’s film ‘Zero’ is already slated for a Christmas release and Ranveer Singh’s ‘Simmba’ is also not far behind. Now, it looks like another big film has joined the list which might lead to a major box office clash.

According to reports, Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg 3’ might clash with Ranveer’s cop film ‘Simmba’. Salman has reportedly said that he would not like his film to be released on Christmas as he would not like to clash with SRK’s film. So if his film is pushed back by a week, then it will clash head-on with ‘Simmba’. Meanwhile, there are apprehensions that since both ‘Dabangg 3’ and ‘Simmba’ are cop films, it might become an overdose for the audience.

However, filmmaker Rohit Shetty who is helming the Ranveer Singh starrer is confident that such confusion would take place as both films are quite different. Meanwhile, Arbaaz Khan who is bankrolling ‘Dabangg 3’ is mum about its release date and has said that it would be revealed by April.

sridevi_sonamVeteran actress Sridevi’s untimely demise has left everyone reeling in shock. She was not only a talented actress but also had many other skills up her sleeve. One of them was painting and the actress had taken up the art in the last few years. In fact, she had made a beautiful painting of one of her B-town co-stars, Sonam Kapoor.

Apparently, Sridevi made a painting of the actress from her debut film ‘Saawariya’ where Sonam was wearing a bright blue dress. In fact, this piece of art was going to be auctioned in Dubai for which the veteran actress had stayed back after attending Mohit Marwah’s wedding. Unfortunately, she accidentally drowned in the bathtub in her Dubai hotel room which proved to be fatal. pariHindi horror films have often got the rap for being unintentionally funny with their terrible acting, overload of creaky door sounds and evil men parading in bad prosthetic make-up.

Pari, the supernatural thriller starring Anushka Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee with an 18+ rating in the UAE, doesn’t suffer from those near-fatal flaws.

Be warned though, it’s heavy on the gore with its bloody twists. But it doesn’t bore you. As far as atmospherics go, the incessant grey pallor with heavy rains throughout the film create the perfect setting for doom and gloom.
Directed by newcomer Prosit Chatterjee, the monster-meets-mortal romance begins on an innocent note with Parambrata Chatterjee’s introverted character subjecting himself to an arranged marriage set-up where he’s getting to know the prospective bride. But on their way back, their car, driven by his father, hits an old woman, and that sets the film in motion.

sridevi_lateSridevi is a very popular actress and not just in Bollywood but down South too. She has delivered some impressive performances over the years. From films like ‘Chandni’ to ‘Sadma’, Sridevi has won accolades for her work. The actress has also been a part of several Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies. In a career spanning three decades, Sridevi took a sabbatical and returned to Bollywood with ‘English Vinglish’. In her remarkable career, Sridevi has also turned down several films and here’s a list of films which she rejected.

Darr
In 1993, Sridevi was offered a role opposite Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Darr’ which she rejected. Apparently, the makers of ‘Darr’ wanted Sridevi to play the leading role, however, she reportedly turned down the role due to the repetition of similar kinds of roles in her career. Eventually, the role went to Juhi Chawla and the film is considered to be one of the biggest hits of her career.

Beta
The ’90s was a golden era wherein Sridevi ruled the silver screen with her beauty and grace. She was offered to play the role of the leading lady in Indra Kumar’s film, ‘Beta’ but she opted out of the film because she felt that she was already doing several films with Anil Kapoor. Later the role was given to Madhuri Dixit who aced it and impressed the critics and the audience with her stellar performance. ‘Beta’ was one of the biggest hits of the year when it had released and Madhuri had even bagged a Filmfare award in the Best Actress category for her performance in the film.

Mohabbatein
Musical romantic multi-starrer film ‘Mohabbatein’ which had actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan in it was a blockbuster film when it released in 2000. According to reports Sridevi was offered a role in the film but she rejected it and later the makers of the film opted to discard the character in the film. The character was reportedly said to be Amitabh’s love-interest in the film but due to her rejection, the role was scrapped out.

Baahubali
One of the most successful films in the history of Indian films, ‘Baahubali’, was apparently offered to Sridevi. Speculations were rife that Sridevi was approached for the role which was eventually played by Ramya Krishnan. However, the actress decided to decline the offer as she signed another South project that had caught her interest. We are sure that Sridevi would have added her touch to the epic film which was helmed by S. S. Rajamouli.

Ajooba
Filmmaker Shashi Kapoor was very keen on casting Sridevi opposite Amitabh Bachchan in the film ‘Ajooba’ but the budget of the film was also at its peak by bringing in two superstars on the same set. Also, this was a time when Sridevi was rejecting a lot of roles opposite Amitabh for not getting an equal amount of screen presence. Not really happy with her role, she let the movie go, which then featured Dimple Kapadia.

Baghban
Ravi Chopra’s ‘Baghban’ which released in 2003 was a hit movie whose star cast even included Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan and Sridevi too was offered a good role but the actress decided to reject it as she didn’t want a film like ‘Baghban’ to mark her comeback on the silver screen.
