arjun_srideviBollywood diva Sridevi’s stepson Arjun Kapoor flew to Dubai today to be with his father Boney Kapoor as he wraps up formalities and takes the body home to Mumbai, the family said. The uncertainty over Sridevi’s sudden death has intensified with no clarity on when her body would be released and officials saying there was no change in the situation on the ground as far as the investigation was concerned.

The matter is with the Dubai Public Prosecution and would proceed only after a go-ahead from it, said officials. “Arjun has gone to Dubai this morning to be with his father at the hotel while the formalities are being wrapped up and to oversee the return journey,” said an official statement from the family in Mumbai. The Dubai Police said on its Twitter handle yesterday that Sridevi drowned in her bathtub after she loss consciousness. However, a forensic report circulated on various media outlets used the term “accidental drowning” as the cause of her death.

The 54-year-old actor, known as Indian cinema’s first woman superstar, passed away in her hotel room in the Jumeirah Emirates Towers late on Saturday, leaving fans, family and friends stunned. The Dubai Police said in a tweet yesterday that it had transferred the case to the Dubai Public Prosecution which will carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases.

“Following the completion of post-mortem analysis, Dubai police headquarters today stated that the death of the Indian actress Sridevi occurred due to drowning in her hotel apartment’s bathtub following loss of consciousness,” it said. The police had yesterday recorded the statement of her filmmaker husband Boney Kapoor, who reportedly discovered Sridevi unconscious in the bathtub filled with water. She was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Dubai-based Gulf News said in a report the actor was under the influence of alcohol. She fell into the bathtub and drowned, it added. However, this could not be independently confirmed.

Gulf News also attached a copy of the UAE government’s forensic report on its Twitter handle. The report, citing accidental drowning as the cause of death, has a stamp of the “Ministry of Health UAE” and the director of preventive medicine, Dubai, Dr Sami Wadie. The report mentioned the actor’s full name, Sreedevi Boney Kapoor Ayyappan, her passport number, date of the incident (February 24, 2018) and the cause of death.

Indian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Navdeep Singh Puri has asked the public not to speculate over the cause of her death. “We are in regular contact with the family of #Sridevi and other well-wishers. We share their pain,” Puri tweeted. “Our experience in similar cases tells us that it does take 2-3 days to complete processes. We leave it to the experts to determine cause of demise. Let’s be responsible,” he said.

The Dubai police informed the Indian Embassy yesterday that another “clearance” was awaited before the body could be released. Sridevi was in Dubai for a family wedding and had stayed back after the ceremonies. Her husband had flown back to Mumbai with their younger daughter Khushi, but returned to Dubai to surprise her. The news of her death, first reported at around 3 a.m. IST on Sunday, sent shock waves across India with those who knew her at a loss to explain how the star, who was present at several wedding functions in Dubai last week, could suddenly breathe her last.

Siddiqui-BoneyAs the country mourns the loss of its favourite superstar Sridevi, there are speculations surrounding her sudden death in Dubai. mid-day has learnt that Adnan Siddiqui, Sridevi’s Pakistani co-actor from Mom (2017), was one of the first few people to reach the Jumeirah Emirates Tower after learning about her death on Saturday night.

Recounting the ill-fated night, Siddiqui told mid-day, “I got a call from a journalist at around 11 pm asking if the news about Sridevi’s death was true. I immediately called up Boney [Kapoor] saab and rushed to him.” The actor says he reached the hotel to find the investigation going on and the room cordoned off. “I got to Jumeirah Emirates at around midnight. Initially, I was not allowed to go upstairs. At the time of the investigation, only Boney saab and Dubai officials were present. So, I waited in the lobby for about an hour.”

It was only after the initial rounds of investigations were done that Siddiqui met Kapoor upstairs. “When everything was settled, Boney saab called me upstairs. He was there along with a family friend, his wife and a daughter. Boney saab was crying like a baby; he was inconsolable. I was with him until 5 am. He was under a lot of stress, so I advised him to rest, and then left.”

The Pakistani actor had developed a warm bond with Sridevi and Kapoor while he was shooting with the former for Mom. So disturbed was Sridevi about not being able to meet him after the film’s release, due to the ban on Pakistani artistes after Uri attacks, that she invited him specially for her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding in Ras Al-Khaimah.

“When I landed in Dubai at 11 pm last week, I called up Boney saab and asked him if it made sense for me to come at that hour considering the function may have been over. He said, ‘Even if the function gets over, we will wait for you’. So I drove for two hours to Ras Al-Khaimah,” recollected Siddiqui, adding that true to her word, Sridevi was waiting for him. “I can’t believe that I met her four days ago and now, she is no more.”

It has been reported that Sridevi’s two daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor are currently staying at Anil’s house as their father Boney manages the proceedings in Dubai needed to bring the actress’ mortal remains home.

RGV-Sridevi-deathWhat was Sridevi’s life like? Director Ram Gopal Varma who worked with her in two films and knew her well said she was always in problems and all that her husband Boney Kapoor could provide her was a shoulder to cry on.
In a “Love letter to Sridevi’s fans” on Tuesday, the filmmaker from Hyderabad explained how difficult life had been her right from her childhood.

“Except for the short glimmer of ‘English Vinglish’, Sridevi was pretty much an extremely unhappy woman. The uncertainty of the future, the ugly turns and twists in her private life left deep scars in the superstar’s sensitive mind and thereafter she was never at peace,” he said recounting all that Sridevi went through in her life.

“From my personal experience with her, the only time I ever saw her in peace was in front of the camera that too only between Action and Cut ..That’s because she could cut off the harsh reality and escape into her own fantasy world,” RGV explained on a blog post on his Facebook.

Ram Gopal Varma pointed out that he had worked with her in her films “Kshana kshanam” and “Govinda Govinda” and that Sridevi’s life was a classic case of how a celebrity’s persons actual life is completely different from how the rest of the outside world perceives it.

“For many, Sridevi’s life was perfect. Beautiful face, great talent, a seemingly stable family with two beautiful daughters. From outside, everything looked so enviable and desirable… But was Sridevi a very happy person and did she lead a very happy life? I know her life from the time I met her. I saw with my own eyes how her life was like a bird in the sky till her father’s death and then became like a bird in a cage due to her overprotective mother,” he explained.

The director explained that back in time when actors used to be only paid in mostly black money, due to fear of tax raids her father used to trust friends and relatives but everyone of them betrayed her the moment her father died. He said then her ignorant mother made many wrong investments in litigated properties. “All those mistakes combined made her almost penny less by the time Boney came into her life. He himself was in huge debts and all he could afford was to give her a shoulder to cry on,” he said.

Ram Gopal Varma recalled she has got into issues with younger sister Srilatha over property matters. “So in effect, the woman desired by millions in the world was all alone and almost penny less in the world,” he said.

The director said Sridevi knew she was a beautiful woman and for years got comestic surgeries done, the effects of which could be seen. He said the nightmare of every actress was age and Sridevi was no exception. “She always came across as a little uptight but that’s because she built a psychological wall around her as she was scared of anybody to really see what’s going on within her. She was panicky about anybody knowing what her insecurities were,” he said.

“She had to put on the makeup and be somebody else not just in front of the camera, but also put a psychological makeup to hide her real self behind the camera. She was being constantly directed by the motives of her parents, her relatives, her husband and to an extent even her own children,” he said.
Ram Gopal Varma described Sridevi as a child trapped in a woman’s body. “She was naive as a person, but suspicious because of her bitter experiences which is not a very good combination,” he said.
