Yesterday, Bioscopewala director Deb Medhekar was surprised to receive a call from the Afghan embassy in New Delhi. As mid- day had reported, the filmmaker is keen to showcase the Danny Denzonga-starrer in Afghanistan as it is based on Rabindranath Tagore’s classic tale, Kabuliwala. He was told that as long as the film did not hurt political sentiments, a viewing could be arranged. Kabuliwala will now actually get a chance to go home.

Medhekar’s interest in the country stems from the plot of his film, based on Rabindranath Tagore’s classic tale, Kabuliwala. The short’s adaptation, featuring Danny Denzongpa and Geetanjali Thapa, revolves around a dry fruit seller from Kabul, who comes to India to sell his wares. He befriends a young girl, who reminds him of his daughter living in Kabul.

In his letter written to Dr Shaida Abdali, Afghanistan ambassador to India, Medhekar has urged for the facilitation of a screening in the country. While he is uncertain of getting permission for a theatrical release, he is hopeful his film will screen in schools, colleges or other public platforms.

Aamir Khan says he was offered to play the role of late Sunil Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju, the upcoming biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt, but he refused it only because he wanted to essay the title character. Aamir interacted with the media on Wednesday. Asked if he was offered to play the role of Sunil Dutt, he said, “He (Hirani) approached me with the script and I loved it. He wanted me to play Dutt saab’s role. It is a fantastic role and the story is largely on the father-son relationship. But Sanju’s role is unbelievable.”

“So as an actor, I told Raju that Sanjay Dutt‘s role is so wonderful that it won my heart. So in this film I can’t do any other role but Sanjay Dutt’s, which of course I cannot do because Ranbir (Kapoor) is playing it. So, do not offer me anything.” Aamir Khan, who has clocked 30 years in the film industry, finds Ranbir Kapoor a good actor and he is confident he must have done well in the film.

“I cannot wait to watch the film now,” said Aamir, who has worked closely with Hirani in films like 3 Idiots and PK. In real life, Aamir shared a strong bond with Sunil Dutt. Reminiscing some fond memories of the late actor, he said, “He always sent me telegrams in those days to wish me on Diwali, Eid, birthday… If my film did well, he sent me a congratulations note.”

What was his favourite memory of Sunil Dutt? Aamir said, “During the riots of 1993, the Hindi film industry took a delegation to the then Chief Minister to stop the riots. Around 40 people went to the CM’s office. After that, we decided that since no immediate action had been taken, we will sit under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near Mantralaya. All 40 of us came and sat under the statue and we decided until the violence stops, we won’t move from there.”

“For the night, we decided to continue it rotationally. So on the first time, Dutt Saab, Yash Chopra, Johnny Walker, I and one of the film producers, we all sat down together at night under the Gandhi statue. We spent the whole night there… Of course, the next day people came and by the evening the CM took some action. But for me, it was a memorable night where I was listening to the stories of their journey from Dutt saab and Johnny Walker. I remember that night very clearly. He was a very strong, dignified and gentle person.”

Aamir confirmed he was producing the slain Indian music mogul Gulshan Kumar’s biopic with Bhushan Kumar.

After facing the arc lights for decades, Raveena Tandon has now gone behind the camera. The actor, who has been dabbling in wildlife photography for some time, is showcasing her maiden collection at an exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery in Kala Ghoda, tomorrow.

Says the actor, “The pictures have been taken at different forests in India, which include the Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand and the Kaziranga National Park in Assam. My children [Rasha and Ranbir] love visiting wildlife sanctuaries, these are images that have been taken during our travels.”

Raveena Tandon is among the 78 chosen photographers who will be displaying their works at the show, H2Photo. The proceeds from the sales will go towards installing solar pump sets at sanctuaries to revive depleting watering holes. “I am the only amateur among so many professionals,” says Tandon, who is currently honing her skill under the tutelage of her photographer friends, Avinash Gowariker and Pavitr Saith.

A vociferous animal activist, Tandon’s interest in wildlife photography stems from her love for them. “It is amazing to see them in the natural habitat,” says the actor, who hopes to have a solo exhibition of her clicks soon.

Rasika Dugal 'hangs out' with IPS officials to prep for web show Delhi Police

Apart from her next big screen venture, Nandita Das’ Manto, Rasika Dugal is also awaiting the release of her upcoming web offering, tentatively titled Delhi Police, which will see her slip into the role of an IPS officer for the first time.

Talking about the eight-part crime drama series, based on high profile criminal cases, Dugal says, “I play an IPS officer who has only recently completed a year-long training in Delhi. So, I met several IPS officers as part of preparation. I spent time with them to understand the processes underway in police stations, how they train for a parade or simply hang out. It is easy to relate to people once they start talking. Stories about their training and desire to do something for people and the country made for many long conversations.” The actor also took time to understand the different official ranks in the system, and those that are specific to the Delhi Police. “There were so many details about the uniform itself, and about the different ways in which they salute each other.”

Shot from January to April earlier this year, the show was helmed by Canadian director Richie Mehta, and has been produced by Golden Karavan and Ivanhoe Pictures. Rasika Dugal admits she’s known Mehta for a while after having met him at a film festival in 2013. “We bumped into each other later when he was on a recce for this project. I was shooting for another venture at the same location. He tells me that it occurred to him then that I would fit the part.” The show, also featuring Shefali Shah, Adil Hussain and Rajesh Tailang is based on investigations of the cases in concern.

Said to be one of the best movies till date, the movie came in as a treat for those who have waited to watch this since the last 10 years. It was amazing to see how the superheroes have transformed over these years. And finally, we were introduced to mighty Thanos. The biggest antagonist fought against the Avengers and got hold of all the infinity stones and destroyed half of the world with just a snap of his finger. By the time the movie came to an end, we were heartbroken with the deaths of our favourite superheroes. But the post credit scene did give us hopes and we are pretty excited that Marvel’s most powerful superhero Captain Marvel will be making her debut.

The latest issue of License Global released the synopsis which states, “A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”

1. A massive ‘sacrifice’ will be made, which means that theories around Avengers using the Time Stone and Reality Stone to beat Thanos will actually take place. Gauahar Khan is on cloud nine. She has bagged the Best Actor award for Sunil Thadani’s short film, Peanut Butter, at the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) Awards recently. This is her first gong for acting. She says the “short film has given her the love to last the longest memories of her life.” It was selected from 150 shorts that were submitted. The film, which has done the festival rounds, is a coming-of-age story. Peanut Butter also bagged the Best Editor and Best Film awards.

Gauahar Khan, who recently launched her own fashion line Gauahargeous, is the winner of the controversial reality show Bigg Boss 7. She also participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Gauahar acted in the films Rocket Singh and Begum Jaan. She also appeared in Bollywood’s first musical, Zangoora – The Gypsy Prince.

She has famously done dance numbers in the films Aan: Men at Work, Shankar Dada M.B.B.S., Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, Ishaqzaade, Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 and Fuddu.

Amitabh Bachchan’s wry sense of humour is often on display on social media. Big B also chides the younger lot of actors on the platform. Yesterday, he seems to have taken a dig at Varun Dhawan.

Big B wrote on Instastory, “Double glasses and ready for the gym. No, you will not follow me there… it is too embarrassing, follow Varun (sic).” Of late, the October actor has been flooding his social networking handles with workout videos and pictures. The actor has been chronicling his every move in the gym. Is this Big B’s way of telling him to calm down?

On the work front, Amitabh Bachchan will next be seen in Vijay Krishna Acharya’s upcoming directorial Thugs Of Hindostan, in which he shares the screen with Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh. The film is based on Philip Meadows Taylor’s 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug and is set to be released during Diwali on 7 November 2018.

Varun Dhawan, who received plaudits from fans and critics for his performance in Shoojit Sircar’s October, is filming for Kalank. Directed by Abhishek Varman and produced by Karan Johar, Varun shares the screen with Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanjay Dutt and Kunal Kemmu in the film.

Varun’s other upcoming release is Sui Dhaaga, in which he is collaborating with Anushka Sharma for the first time.
