Amidst Sanjay Dutt’s biopic up for release, essayed by Ranbir Kapoor, the makers of Yash Raj Films have surprised their fans by announcing Shamshera. Sanjay Dutt will be seen in a negative role in this film opposite Ranbir Kapoor

In what can be called the ultimate casting coup, director Karan Malhotra has got Sanjay Dutt to play the ruthless, merciless villain in Yash Raj Film’s period action-adventure Shamshera! He will be pitted against Ranbir Kapoor in the mega action spectacle. Interestingly, Shamshera will be Sanjay’s first ever film with YRF.

Talking about it Sanjay Dutt said, “My father and Yash uncle were very close friends and now that I’m doing my first YRF film, it is an extremely emotional moment for me. When I heard Karan’s idea to pit Ranbir against me, I thought it was just brilliant. I’m looking forward to shooting this incredibly exciting film, my second with the hugely talented Karan Malhotra.”

On the other hand, director Karan Malhotra says, “Shamshera is a highly ferocious and fearless character in the film. Therefore his nemesis, the villain had to be even more fierce and monumental in every aspect. Who’s better than Sanjay Sir to give us that impact on screen.”

This high-octane adventure film is set in the heartland of India and will have jaw-dropping action sequences and a never seen before Ranbir Kapoor.

Shamshera is set to go on floors end of this year and shooting will wrap by mid-2019.

Until we actually heard Ranveer Singh lending his voice to Wade Wilson in ‘Deadpool 2’ for the Hindi version of the Marvel film, we never realised that he was the desi superhero we always needed. Putting his trademark skills to this role, Ranveer was seen cursing like a boss, jumping from Marathi to Punjabi accents like a pro.

Dopinder’s character is one of the most loved ones and adds to the already overflowing comic relief in the movie.

Despite their similar sensibilities in cinema, Aamir Khan and Kangana Ranaut are yet to team up on screen. When a picture of the two along with producer Kamal Jain started doing the rounds of social media on Monday, it led to speculation that the duo might be joining hands for a film. Jain, who is producing Ranaut’s Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi, revealed to mid-day that “a collaboration” is in the offing.

The producer said, “The meeting was regarding a collaboration that is in the works. It was a positive meeting. We had a long discussion, and are hopeful that something more fruitful comes of it.” A quick probe in the trade circles suggested that Ranaut and Jain discussed the Arunima Sinha biopic with the superstar. A source said, “The film was originally expected to be backed by Farhan Akhtar, but was later acquired by DAR Motion Pictures. Given its compelling storyline, it won’t be surprising if Aamir Khan also comes on board as producer.”

However, Jain remained non-committal about Khan’s possible involvement in the film that traces the journey of the first female amputee to have scaled Mount Everest. “When things are finalised, we will make an announcement. For now, we are in the process of putting things together. I can’t divulge any further details on the project,” he said.

Kangana Ranaut is also believed to be keen on releasing Manikarnika in China. It is learnt that her ambitious film on Rani Laxmibai formed an integral part of their conversation. The source said, “Kamal and Kangana are keen to release the Rani Laxmibai biopic in China. They had gone to seek advice from Aamir on the subject. Since Aamir has cracked the Chinese market with his string of hits, his feedback is important to the film’s strategy.”

Well, it’s not every day that you get to meet seasoned actor Naseeruddin Shah. And when you do, it definitely turns out to be an intellectual conversation about being hopeful, life and staying determined. With his film Hope Aur Hum up for a release on May 11, we sit at his palatial abode and talk about the message the film has in store for us, and how it touches base upon the complexities of life through this simple film.

Here are the excerpts from the conversation:

Firstly, the film’s title, Hope Aur Hum is very catchy. Who are the ‘Hum’ here?
It’s a lovely title. ‘Hum’ is the family, the world because this family is a microcosm of different disparate individuals, who make up a unit, and who have different interests and priorities. The woman (Sonali Kulkarni) has the priority to keep the home running and keep everybody harmonious. The father (Aamir Bashir) has the priority to earn the bread, younger brother (Naveen Kasturia) has to get married. The old man (Naseeruddin Shah) feels, it’s his responsibility to continue his artistic endeavours on his old-fashioned machine, which is so unwieldy, it’s like a small car, but he insists on keeping it. So, it’s a parable for not necessarily clinging to what is old but preserving what is worthwhile. Everything that’s old is not necessarily useless; no doubt better versions of it have appeared but it still has its own function and is aesthetic.

The film’s trailer has too many elements, a kid and his passion for cricket, a young lad, and his issues, and a man with his classic printing machine… What is the common thread between all of these elements?
Each one has a hope. The child (Kabir Sajid Shaikh) wants to be a cricketer, his elder sister (Virti Vaghani) wants to study, his uncle wants to find a suitable girl and his phone is a symbol for which is lost for the hope, and the older boy wants to be successful. Each one has his own threat, and with each one, there is an element of wanting to achieve.

Do you believe in destiny? Which one do you think is true- man creates his own destiny or we get what destiny has in store for us, and why?
It is impossible to give a definitive answer to that kind of a question, one doesn’t know. It’s like asking, ‘Does God Exist?’ There’ll never be a definitive answer to that. But, I believe one’s destiny is in one’s own hands to a large extent.

With things becoming so complex in our daily lives or different phases that we go through to, people tend to lose hope, how does one still stay hopeful?
By continuing to practise what you believe in. When photography came in, painters thought that this is the end of the road for us, because what we can do so well – a photograph can do even better, and those were the realistic painters, who made these still lives and so on – and absolutely incredibly beautiful painting. But then, when photography came in, it could do the same thing better. So, the painters resorted to cubism, to expressionism, impressionism, abstraction etc. Even writers resorted to the same things. So, you’ve got to set the challenges for yourself, otherwise, there’s somebody just waiting in line to take your place.

As an actor, you must have seen many highs and lows in your career and life as well. How did you manage to cling on to hope even when the tides were against you?
Because of the fact that I knew that nobody could prevent me from doing the work I love, which is – acting. I may not become a big star or I may not earn lots of money, I may not be the most famous guy in the country but at least, I will be able to do what I love and continued to do, what my passion is, and that is to act. And, that’s what I continued and that is why my association with the theatre continued and today it is too highly beneficial to me and to several others.

How was it working with the little kid, Kabir? You’ll seem to share an endearing chemistry in the trailer of the film.
He’s a brat, and he’s a very seasoned actor and a hard guy but, he’s a very clever actor. He knows what he’s doing. It was fun. I tried to induce a couple of spontaneous reactions from him because he’s done a lot of work. He’s done several advertisements, I believe. Getting into reacting naturally was the challenge there and I think he managed it very well.

Pictures of Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor went viral with fans wondering if the two were an item. Well, tongues went wagging when Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor made a joint entry at Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja’s reception.

There has been buzz that the Brahmastra actors are seeing each other. Alia Bhatt, 25, has said that she always had a crush on Ranbir Kapoor, 35, ever since his Saawariya (2007) days. Whether they are together or not, time will tell.

Meanwhile, Alia took to Instagram to share her picture with her rumored boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor and many celebs showered all hearts and awws and smileys on their photo.

While Mouni Roy posted heart smileys on their picture, Bipasha Basu mentioned “Cuties”. But what caught our attention was Shaheen Bhatt, Alia’s sister, posted a heart emoji with an arrow through the center, like the arrow that cupid shoots for love. Hmm! Well, that confirms a lot we think!

On the work front, Alia Bhatt is all geared up for her film Raazi. When asked if she had signed anything new, she said, “Actually, I have. But I leave the announcement to the producers. At the moment I have ‘Gully Boys’, which is complete. Now one year would be taken up with ‘Bramhastra’ and ‘Kalank’, both Karan Johar’s productions which is like home to me.”

While the whole world was going gaga over Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja’s amazing wedding, we had another couple taking marriage vows in a low key affair. Keeping it secret and under the wraps, Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi surprised everyone with their wedding.

Though we never really had any idea about their relationship, the duo tied the knot in a gurudwara in Delhi, in the presence of close friends and family members.

Neha, who has always been very private about her personal space, wanted an intimate Sikh wedding and Angad decided to go with it. It took everyone by surprise when the couple shared the news.

Although the two have never worked together, they have been friends for a very long time. Until things took a different direction, of course.

Dressed in a white wedding trousseau, Angad looked dashing while Neha looked beautiful in her wedding lehenga, making a gorgeous couple indeed.

We got to work and curated some pictures of the two together that we never noticed. Or maybe we thought they were ‘just friends’ but the story was something different altogether.

What is Bollywood without a steady dose of controversies and protesting, hysterical fanatics threatening to burn down everything if a movie offends them or their beliefs? India is not a stranger to witnessing severe objection to certain types of cinematic content, and sadly, the trend shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Indian filmmakers create hundreds of films every year, which either do not get released or lead to controversy, protest, and bans.

There are certain people in our nation who are not very accepting when a thought-provoking film is made. From communities to even the Censor Board, everyone brings their own issues to the table, which we bet, even the makers may have never thought of.

So, here we have a list of 18 films that landed in hot waters because the Indian masses couldn’t digest the content.

1972: ‘Siddhartha’

Siddhartha© Pinterest

Once upon a time, the Indian Censor Board was a tad too sensitive and used to get easily offended (still does). Anything that had to deal with sexuality was considered against principles and ethics (because India is filled with saints!). Conrad Rooks’s ‘Siddhartha’ was about exploring your sexuality and India didn’t approve of it.

1973: ‘Garm Hawa’

Garm Hawa© Unit SMM

Based on an unpublished story by an Urdu Writer Ismat Chughtai, ‘Garm Hawa’ takes us back to 1947 when India received Independence and the horror of Partition took place. Tracing the story of a Muslim businessman, the movie shows the complexity he faced after the Partition. Just like every Muslim at the time, he was facing the option of staying back in his homeland or leave with his family to the newly formed Pakistan. This is one of those rare gems that throws light on what the Muslims went through when the British tore the country apart. Fearing possible communal violence and riots, the movie was postponed by eight months.

1975: ‘Aandhi’

Aandhi© Pinterest

Considered to be one of the critically acclaimed films, at one point it was banned for the whole tenure of the National Emergency. Wondering what was Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen’s movie all about? This political drama revolved around a female politician who reminded many of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Many even claimed that the movie was based on her life and her relationship with her husband. However, the storyline has nothing to do with Gandhi’s life. But, the makers were even asked to remove the scenes where Suchitra was seen smoking and drinking (as if all politicians just drink milk).

1985: ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’

Ram Teri Ganga Maili© Youtube

The legendary Raj Kapoor often challenged the society and its belief. ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ was one such movie, which was said to have scenes that Bollywood had never witnessed before. In fact, if you watch the Mandakini and Rajiv Kapoor starrer movie, you will be surprised as to why the controversy even began in the first place, because none of the scenes directed were uncomfortable or vulgar.

1994: ‘Bandit Queen’

Bandit Queen© Twitter

To pick a subject like this in a country like India requires more than just a thought. What no one could do during the early 90’s, director Shekhar Kapur dared to. Based on the life of Phoolan Devi, one of the most feared woman dacoits in northern India, the movie gives you legit goosebumps. Phoolan, who led a gang of bandits, belonged to a poor low caste family and was married to a man thrice her age. Describing what happened to her isn’t easy. The film showed a hyper use of abusive language, sexual content, and nudity due to which it was criticised. But despite everything, ‘Bandit Queen’ won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. If you haven’t watched this one, you are missing on something truly big.

1996: ‘Fire’

Fire© hamilton-Mehta productions

Well, talking about homosexuality is not that big deal in present times, but it was in 1996 when critically acclaimed director Deepa Mehta made ‘Fire’. This is the first installment of the Elements trilogy. Throwing light on a taboo subject in a country like India always has severe effects. When ‘Fire’ was released, posters were burnt, theatres were destroyed because Indians at the time were not ready to deal with a subject that spoke about homosexuality (as if turning a blind eye is the solution). The movie was retracted for a brief time.

1996: ‘Kama Sutra: A Tale Of Love’

Kama Sutra: A Tale Of Love© Mirabai Films

Well, we can do it but we don’t like talking about it. India is called the land of Kama Sutra, but how ironic is it that we feel ashamed to even talk about it publicly! If Vatsayana was alive today, he would have loved Meera Nair’s ‘Kama Sutra: A Tale Of Love’. The movie explores love and the sexual equation of four lovers in the 16th century. This film was banned in India because the officials felt that the sexual content was too harsh. How funny, especially when the book is easily accessible for purchase online and offline. The movie apparently went against our ethics and moral. However, around the world, it was praised and acclaimed.

2004: ‘Murder’

Murder© BCCL

How on Earth can we ever forget this movie? It was a film that made every parent uneasy and as kids it often made us wonder why we couldn’t see it. The steamy-hot scenes between Mallika Sherawat and Emraan Hashmi were clearly too hot to handle for the entire nation.

2005: ‘Sins’

Sins© Twitter

One lesson that we have learned over time is that one should never ever question religion and its values. This Shiney Ahuja movie was actually based on true events where a Catholic priest was involved with a young woman. Clearly, this wasn’t going to end well. The topic pissed off so many people that no television channel was even ready to promote it.

2005: ‘Water’

Water© Twitter

Deepa Mehta’s movie ‘Water’ (third installment of the Elements trilogy) received massive backlash.  The film throws light on the topic of ostracism and misogyny through the lives of widows at an ashram in Varanasi. The protesters were of the opinion that ‘Water’ displayed the country in a bad light, and even before the shooting began, right-wing activists starting issuing death threats and even destroyed the sets. The vandalism was so intense that Mehta had to change her shooting location from Varanasi to Sri Lanka. And that’s not it, she even had to change the entire cast and shoot the film under a pseudo-title, ‘River Moon’.

2005: ‘Amu’

Amu© Youtube

What happens when you start questioning everything about your existence? Amu is a story about 1984 riots in India where thousands of Sikhs were massacred. People were so against this film that the Censor Board in India took ample of time reviewing it and it was also not approved to be telecast on the television.

2006: ‘The Pink Mirror’

The Pink Mirror© Solaries Pictures

We bet you haven’t even heard about this film because it never made it to the theatres. ‘The Pink Mirror’ is the first mainstream film that showed two transsexuals in the main lead. Well, we think it was ‘the’ film that could have changed the face of Indian cinema, but our sanskari ‘Censor Board’ had a different perspective. While the masses never got the opportunity to watch it, the film won the Jury Award for Best Feature at the New York LGBT Film Festival and the Best Film of the Festival at Question de Genre in Lille, France. The movie is now available on Netflix but the real question is….if we are ready for another bold film like this?

2007: ‘Black Friday’

Black Friday© Twitter

‘Black Friday’ was not just a game changer for filmmaker Anurag Kashyap but also for Bollywood. On one hand, when B-town was all about sappy romance, this one talked about the 1993 Mumbai bombings. The movie was suspended by the Bombay High Court until the trial. It took ‘Black Friday’ three more years before we finally got to see it and the wait was worth it. From the Indian media to international scribes, people applauded Kashyap’s vision.

2007: ‘Parzania’

Parzania© Lighthouse Company

A heart-wrenching movie, ‘Parzania’ was inspired by the true story of a 10-year-old boy, Azhar Mody who disappeared after the 2002 Gulbarg Society massacre. Yes, it’s that same carnage where 69 people were killed for no fault but just out of sheer hatred. This is one of the many incidents which led to the Gujarat riots. When ‘Parzania; was released, the cinema owners in Gujarat threatened to boycott its screening, which led to an unofficial ban in Gujarat.

2007: ‘Nishabd’

Nishabd© PVR Pictures

What happens when a man in 60’s falls in love with a teenager? Simple. Protests. Because it’s just against our values. An adaptation of the classic novel ‘Lolita’, the movie caused massive protest in Allahabad.

2010: ‘Inshallah, Football’

Inshallah, Football© Alipur Films

While ‘Inshallah, Football’ was praised by the critics it never got the green light from the Indian authorities for its release. Why? This is a documentary film about a young boy from Kashmir whose ambition is to become a footballer. But what’s his fault? He lives in military conflicted Kashmir. He is talented, has what it takes but everything comes to an end when he couldn’t travel out of the country because his father is an alleged militant. Those who have seen this movie believed the makers showcased the reality of violence, but the authorities felt the film was critical about the political tension in Kashmir and how the Indian military operated there.

2015: ‘India’s Daughter’

India's Daughter© Twitter

The movie was based on the brutal Nirbhaya rape case that still gives us chills. Directed by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin, the documentary takes you back to the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder of 23-year-old student Jyoti Singh. The film also has Mukesh Singh, the accused convict, who talks about why he committed the crime and how he felt about it. ‘India’s Daughter’ was banned in India for some time because of the rapist’s views on how he discriminates and understands the two genders portrayed India in a negative light. This one will give you sleepless nights, as it’s so painful to witness what happened.

2018: ‘Padmaavat’

Padmaavat© SLB Films

Do we even need to start talking about the controversy that followed ‘Padmaavat’? From Bhansali being assaulted to the protestors giving death threats to even a bounty being announced on Deepika Padukone’s head, the right-wing groups did everything one could think of. Based on the famous legend of Rani Padmavati, the film talks about her beauty and then Delhi ruler Alauddin Khilji’s obsession with her beauty. The communities felt that the film misrepresents and sabotages history. The Rajputs were against the release of the film. After months of struggle, the movie finally released this year and was loved by the viewers.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ was a masterpiece, no doubt about that. After all, it has been almost two weeks since it was released and here we are still talking about it, and we probably will until the next Avengers movie comes out next year.

Remember that meme about it being the biggest, most ambitious cross-over yet? If you have watched the movie, you know it wasn’t an exaggeration. The movie brought so many brilliant actors together and tied all the characters together perfectly, and when you have such incredible actors, you know they’re going to give everything they have, way more than just coming in and delivering their lines.

Drax Improvised The Funniest Line In 'Infinity War'

We already know that so many actors, who are a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like to improvise their lines and ‘Infinity War’ was no different.

Last week, we got to know that Tom Holland, aka Spider-Man, came up with the most heartbreaking line in the entire movie himself. You know what I’m talking about – “I don’t feel so good Mr. Stark. I don’t want to go, please I don’t want to go Mr. Stark. I am sorry, Tony, I am sorry.”

Drax Improvised The Funniest Line In 'Infinity War'

Okay, brb. Need to cry first for just reliving this moment.

Now that I’m all cried out, let’s try to lighten the mood and look at some of the most hilarious lines in the movie, actually one particular line. We have already listed our favourite dialogues from the movie, and obviously “why is Gamora?” was a part of it.

But, the best line from the movie just got even better. But before we go further, we need to relive this one.

Drax Improvised The Funniest Line In 'Infinity War'

Peter Quill: “I’m gonna ask you this one time: Where is Gamora?”

Tony Stark: “Yeah, I’ll do you one better. Who is Gamora?”

Drax: “I’ll do you one better. Why is Gamora?”

And, this was followed by the entire theatre laughing. It turns out this was completely improvised by Dave Bautista aka Drax and my love for Drax just increased right now.

In an interview with Yahoo, ‘Infinity War’s two screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that Bautista completely ad-libbed the line, prompting Markus to recall, “OK, you’re very good at your job.”

Drax Improvised The Funniest Line In 'Infinity War'

Good job, Drax. Also, side note, if they don’t bring him back, I will start my own Infinity War with Marvel.

Now, if it turns out “I am Steve Rogers” was improvised, I will die.

The moment I started writing this story, the first thing I did was ask someone to pinch me, because the news that I am going to share with you guys right now is nothing short of a sudden surprise.

Starting from the solid AF DIY Mark , it transformed multiple times, according to the characteristics and specializations of the armors associated. In the latest appearance of Iron Man in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, his suit was made out of nanobytes that could envelope his body with the touch of a button.
