Ted-SRKShah Rukh Khan, after receiving the 24th Crystal Award in Davos at the World Economic Forum (WEF) for “his leadership in championing children’s and women’s rights in India”, said that he is happy to get recognition on a global platform for his “minuscule work”. “Extremely charged with the amazing opportunity I have had. This award is a recognition for the minuscule work that I did. I would like to do it with even more fervour. What is even more pleasant is that India is here in full power,” King Khan told media after receiving the Award.’

Ace film-maker and Shah Rukh’s close friend and confidante Karan Johar said that he is proud of the Badshah of Bollywood for receriving such an honour. “I am so excited as a film-maker and as a close friend of the family, and his director for so many years. I feel very proud that he is bestowed with this honorable award,” Karan Johar exclusively told ANI in Davos.

While the Indian web series space has really exploded in the last few years with new shows, platforms and web-dedicated production houses popping up on a daily basis, 2018 could well be the year that blows the lid off the digital scene like never before. While we’ve had a slew of promising web series of late, India still hasn’t seen that one definitive game-changer which grabs the nation and proves that digital platforms have well and truly arrived, and this could be the year that changes that.

2018 is the year which will see the most shows commissioned and released by the two names most synonymous with the digital space, Netflix and Amazon. While both have been hard at work building up their content libraries, Prime Video has been far more aggressive thus far in the original content space having released a wide range of originals.

From multiple stand up comedy specials to series such as Excel Entertainment’s ‘Inside Edge’ and a number of comedian-led shows including Sumukhi Suresh’s ‘Pushpavali’, Biswa Kalyan Rath’s ‘Laakhon Mein Ek’ and Anuvab Pal’s ‘Going Viral’, to name a few. Conversely, the global mammoth of Netflix has taken a far more restrained approach and has only just begun green lighting a handful of projects.

What’s particularly interesting about the year ahead in streaming, is that it will see leading filmmakers from the film industry enter the digital space with notable stars and sizeable budgets. Put simply, it’s the first year we will see the film industry embrace the small screen in a big way with everyone from Ram Madhvani to Vikram Bhatt to RGV busy conjuring content for one platform or another. What will be fascinating is to see what these filmmakers do with the episodic format and a far less restricted platform with no shackles of censorship or language and a conducive landscape for envelope-pushing storytelling.

So without further ado, in no particular order, here are the shows we’re looking forward to most in 2018:

1. ‘Sacred Games’- Netflix

The 5 Most Anticipated Indian Web Series Of 2018© dna

Without a doubt the one to lead the pack as the most eagerly awaited show of the year which sees two of our finest filmmakers in Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane helm the adaptation of Vikram Chandra’s underworld-based acclaimed novel of the same name. What’s more, it’s Netflix’s first Indian show, which also features an electric cast the likes of Saif Ali Khan, Nawaazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte. The hope is that ‘Sacred Games’ could be the show that puts Indian storytelling on the map and travels across Netflix’s massive global network, like the highly acclaimed German hit ‘Dark’.

2. ‘The Forgotten Army’- Amazon Prime

The 5 Most Anticipated Indian Web Series Of 2018© Twitter

For all he’s done to up the competence and storytelling of mainstream blockbusters, it’s finally time for us to see what Kabir Khan is capable of outside the shackles of the mainstream machinery. He’s currently finishing up on ‘The Forgotten Army’, based on Subhash Chandra Bose’s ‘Indian National Army’ inspired by Khan’s own documentary of the same name. The series tells the story of the men and women who fought the heroic war for the independence of India as part of the Indian National Army, led by the charismatic Bose. We certainly can’t wait to see what the politically charged filmmaker brings forth and does with the medium.

3. ‘Made In Heaven’- Amazon Prime

The 5 Most Anticipated Indian Web Series Of 2018© digital hash

This one had us at Zoya Akhtar. Reuniting with her longtime writing partner Reema Kagti, Akhtar makes her official foray into the digital space with ‘Made In Heaven’, a show which revolves around two competing wedding planning firms. Aside from the casting of Masaan’s Swetha Tripathi and actor Joy Sengupta, little is known about the show at present, however, Akhtar can do no wrong in our books and we can’t wait to see how she blows us away this time.

4) ‘The Ministry’- Amazon Prime

The 5 Most Anticipated Indian Web Series Of 2018© indianexpres

AIB. Irrfan Khan. Political comedy. If you aren’t bursting with excitement at the very prospect of this then something just isn’t right.  Comedic powerhouse AIB is finally making its long overdue foray into narrative storytelling with ‘The Ministry’ which sees Irrfan Khan essaying the role of a washed-up, narcissistic Bollywood actor who has been appointed as a ‘placeholder’ culture minister. We are chomping at the bits to see what these explosions of talent conjure up together, but knowing AIB it certainly won’t shy away from going places few previously have.

5) ‘The Test Case’- Alt Balaji

The 5 Most Anticipated Indian Web Series Of 2018© indiatoday

Interestingly the only non-Amazon/Netflix entrant on this list, coming from Ekta Kapoor’s Alt Balaji, ‘The Test Case’ screams promise across the board from cast to director to premise.

Lead by the freakishly talented Nimrat Kaur playing the first woman to be inducted to the Indian Army and hardships she faces along the one. Brought to life by celebrated director Nagesh Kukunoor, ‘The Test Case’ boasts of an exciting trailer which promises to be exactly the kind of refreshing story one hopes to see in the digital space.

Special Mention: Amit Sadh-Madhavan-starrer Breathe and Ali Fasal-Swetha Tripathi-starrer Mirzapur.

Other recently announced Netflix projects to look forward to in future include multilingual original series, based on the book ‘Bard of Blood’, in partnership with Red Chillies Entertainment. ‘Selection Day’, based on the book by author Aravind Adiga, and ‘Again’, a supernatural, female-led detective series set in New Delhi written by Quantico-scribe Marisha Mukherjee. ‘Kahaani’ filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh is also currently working on a web series called ‘Suspect X’ for Amazon Prime Video.

All those who were creating a ruckus over Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’, can finally mellow down and let everyone just be, because there is utterly and absolutely nothing in the film that could hurt the proud Rajput clan’s sabhyata and sanskar.

This film is more like the director’s love letter to the Rajputs showing them in the most glorious light, something that the Karni Sena will happy with (if only they would see it in the first place). This magnum opus is a 2 hour 43 minute saga of Rajputi ‘aan baan shaan’.

Talking about the conflict; the political clash, royal families coming into the picture, the demand for Deepika Padukone’s nose and Bhansali’s head and finally the movie releasing, sadly makes for a more interesting tale than the film itself. While many went bonkers over the release, the end result was a like famous Hindi saying, “khoda pahad nikala chuha.”

Ranveer Saves 'Padmaavat' From Being A Snoozefest© Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions

It’s not that the director doesn’t try. But most of the frame will remind you of his previous films like ‘Devdas’, ‘Baajirao Mastani’ and ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’.

For those who don’t know the story, it is loosely based on the poem of the same name by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The historic film tells the story of King Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor), who is true to his word and believes in archaic codes of honour. On the other hand, you have Muslim invader Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh), who is brutally terrifying and wants everything that is valuable in his possession. The breathtaking beauty, Rani Padmavati, who is the wife of Ratan Singh becomes the latest name to join Khilji’s list of things that he ‘wants’, which then leads him to lay siege to the Chittor fort.

To put it simply, the tale is about ‘ek tha raja, ek thi rani, dono mar gaye khatam kahaani’, where by the end, the queen commits ‘jauhar’ (the act of sacrificing oneself in fire) along with all the women in the castle.

To be precise, the whole Sena fracas gave us two things: a flawless view of Deepika Padukone’s CGI enhanced midriff and a flawed script.

Ranveer Saves 'Padmaavat' From Being A Snoozefest© Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions

It takes almost the entire first half of the film to set things in motion. You have characters that look damn appealing but at the same moment, they also test your patience.

For people who love window shopping, this is your one-stop shop. But boy, after a point, you just don’t give a damn about these amazingly dressed characters.

The forced romance between Deepika and Shahid hardly blossoms and leaves you yawning. Instead, you end up remembering and craving Ranveer and Deepika’s chemistry from ‘Baajirao Mastani’ and ‘Ram Leela’ time and again. Blame it on the maker for splitting the couple up for his third project.

Talking about performances, the film would have been an epic bore if it wasn’t for Ranveer Singh. He, as Khilji, is electric and steals the show. The man is epic and unpredictable in a good manner. He is extremely villainous and makes sure that you can’t take your eyes away from him. He enjoys vandalism, giggles, laughs like a maniac, and dances like a free-spirit. He is gruesome, lusty, and unethical and doesn’t mind being vocal about it.

Padmaavat© Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions

Ranveer amuses you with his stunning performance because he is the only one who makes all the sense in the film. He makes you dislike him but that’s what is exactly needed. There is a hint of him being a bisexual in the most minimal manner. Jim Sarbh who plays a role of Khilji’s most trusted mate Malik Kafur is spot on and gives an effective performance which leaves you impressed.

Shahid, on the other hand, is more like a mannequin in the film. He is stiff most of the time with an oddly pursed stern mouth. He is supposed to be the core of the film, but is not as appealing as he should be.

Deepika Padukone is gorgeous and plays a strong character that personifies strength and dignity, clearing fitting the ‘good Indian girl’ and later, the ‘wife’ bill. In fact, there also comes a part where she asks her husband the permission to kill herself if Khilji ends up winning the war, which is the most likely scenario.

Ranveer Saves 'Padmaavat' From Being A Snoozefest© Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions

Bhansali’s work is spectacular and no one can make larger than life films like he does, but despite the glorious scenes, the film fails to leave an imprint in your mind.

It’s sad to say that this film falls flat. Unlike ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Ram Leela’, where he did a commendable job, despite a heavy and complex storyline, the plot of ‘Padmaavat’ is too vague and even the wonderful cast can’t save it from the bargain bin.

Being an ardent Bhansali fan, what I would like to ask Bhansali is why does ‘Padmaavat’ look more like a rehash of his older, better films? Or should we blame the CBFC for the brutal cuts that almost ruined the film and left it with so many gaping holes?

Alia Bhatt was recently in Jodhpur to celebrate her friend Kripa Mehta’s grand wedding. The actress was accompanied by her bestie, Anushka Ranjan. Alia and Anushka played the perfect bridesmaid to the bride and were the life of the event. For the sangeet ceremony, Bhatt dolled up in a peach lehenga and danced on Arjun Kapoor’s ‘Hawa Hawa’ from ‘Mubarakan’ and kept everyone entertained.

However according to a Mumbai Mirror report, what kept tongues wagging was Alia’s performance on alleged ex- Sidharth Malhotra’s song ‘Nachde Ne Saare’ from ‘Baar Baar Dekho’. Later, she got emotional as the bride swayed on the song ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage’. Next morning, they also watched polo match together before the grand marriage commenced in the evening.

Later, the report also stated that Alia and her girl gang welcomed the ‘baarat’ with the traditional aarti, and burst into tears as her friend readied to take the wedding vows.

Here are a few pictures from the wedding:

The 24-year-old actress had taken a break from Zoya Akhtar’s film ‘Gully Boy’ to be beside her friend on her D-Day. Alia, along with Anushka, landed in Mumbai on Tuesday. On the other hand, rumours about Alia and Ranbir’s proximity towards each other are making headlines. They both will be seen in Ayan Mukerji’s next ‘Brahmastra’.

Richa Chadha has an interesting message to share giving her take on the ‘He for She’ campaign which is administered by the United Nations

Richa Chadha

On National Girl Child Day, Richa Chadha took to social media this morning to spread a pivotal message on the girl child issue in India. Richa has always been looked upto as a figure who speaks her mind and especially when it comes to empowerment of women. And on this special day too, she has an interesting message to share giving her take on the #HeforShe campaign which is administered by the United Nations to make men be the agents of change for equal rights of women.

In the video that Richa shared on Instagram, Richa says, “I got a thought on this National Girl Child Day that while we talk about government initiatives like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, I think we need to discuss things like everyday sexism too. Things like discussing gender pay disparity, or the hesitant attitude to report a sexual crime. And even the fact that the number of child rapes are increasing every day. Not a single day we wake up where there isn’t a disturbing news. Adding to that, I feel this HeForShe movement which is ongoing. I feel for the survival of the human race depends both on men and women. I feel it should be HeForUs instead. But here’s hoping we can all do it together because it is the need of the hour. (sic)”

Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Shape of Water’ rules the list with 13 nominations, being just one nod away from tying the record for the most nominations with films like ‘Titanic’, ‘All About Eve’ and ‘La La Land’.

When you watched Khal Drogo, the man demanded a certain level of respect and also invoked fear at the same time. You know it didn’t matter if you were watching him on the TV screen, Jason Momoa owned the role like no one could. Actually if you think of it, no one comes to mind who could have done it better. Just look at that stare. Chills!

People Thought Jason Momoa Couldn't Speak English

It totally sucked that the character was killed shortly but it became an iconic role in itself nevertheless. However, if you do some basic maths, you will realise that it wasn’t until a very long time post the first season that we saw him on the screen again. Right? Well, turns out there was a reason behind this absence.

On a recent outing with Jimmy Fallon on his show, Jason explained how many people thought he couldn’t speak English! So eventually thanks to the strong Khal Drogo character, people couldn’t figure out how to place him in a movie.

Even though it sounds ridiculous and funny to us as fans, turns out it was a genuine problem he was facing work wise. Though we are glad that someone figured out soon that he is not from the North or doesn’t actually lead a tribe but is just a fabulous actor, otherwise how would have ‘Bad Batch’ and ‘Aquaman’ happened to him ? If you follow him on social media, he makes for a visual treat.

Getting ready for our Beijing press mad love to Mitchell @king_baby_studio for making all my rings and cuffs for JL and Aquaman. Blaine @madeworn for everything you make me brother @judicael_sacred_skulls for your amazing necklaces supporting true artists and craftsmen And @guinnessus because it’s always happy hour somewhere #fuckyoujetlag #itsguinnesstime #allinbeijing. #knuckleheadfolife Aloha j

Probably the only thing that is similar between Jason the actor and Khal the character is that, they both are pretty badass!

Sidharth Malhotra on how playing different roles is necessary to stay relevant in Bollywood

Sidharth Malhotra
Sidharth Malhotra

Sidharth Malhotra loves the place he finds himself in when he’s shuttling questions on relationships. Of course, when you feel like you’ve structured your question aptly to arrive at an objective answer, he cuts off conversation with a sheepish, “Why is it [actors’ relationships] anyone’s business?” Until then, rumoured lover Alia Bhatt peppers his conversation all along.

“Alia has nabbed a variety of roles,” he says during this interview, a trait, he insists, is evident in his career’s trajectory as well. “If the fact that I’ve tried out different roles is not true, then I don’t know what is,” says the actor, pointing out that his upcoming stint as an Indian Army man in Aiyaary is distanced from his antagonist act in Ittefaq (2017). “Each of my roles has been unique. I have [revamped myself] with every film.”

Variety, he insists, will be the demand of new-age cinema. “I’ve attempted different scripts because it’s important to do so. In the future, people will remember us [actors] by our characters, not the genre we’ve been associated with,” he added.
