Actress Taapsee Pannu who is enjoying her success in Bollywood because of her versatility in performance is also is known for doing her bit for social cause. Having worked in films like PINK and Naam Shabana, Taapsee became the face of woman empowerment having portrayed strong roles on screen.

Taapsee has always been vocal about the need for gender equality and women safety. After having supported several causes related to self-defence and supporting the teachings of defence education for young girls. She had previously supported an initiative, which was her idea in her own school to start giving self- defence classes to young children. Today on National Girl child day Taapsee plans to extend this by branching out the idea of helping spread education of self- defence to young girls. She pledges on this Girl child day to support and activate more such initiatives through the help of experts, self-defence educators and through the means of local NGOs in different parts of the country.

Speaking on this Taapsee said, “I wish on this National Girl child day we stand for each other and for oneself and we make it a collaborative effort. In a patriarchal society like ours, providing education and the right mindfulness for young girls from the beginning has become imperative. So on this day, I wish to activate more initiatives for these girls so that they become independent and can fight for themselves. We are in conversation with few experts and NGO’s and I hope it works out soon.”

NJ: When I read the press invite for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’, the first thought that came to my mind was “Hey there Karni Sena”. Being martyred for a story would be the high point of my career.

SH: Being an Anglo-Indian, I didn’t quite follow the issue through 2017. But, I decided to tag along for the press release anyway. I wanted to know what all the hype was about. More importantly, I wanted to know if it was warranted…

NJ: Waiting at the theatre, with police personnel in uniform and many more in plain clothes, there was a forbidden thrill in the air. Our internal politics are so messed up, watching a movie can feel like an act of rebellion. Thank you religious fanatics, for the masala popcorn.

SH: Personally, the masala gave me piles. I went in for the movie not knowing what these fanatics had a problem with. When it finished, I kind of understood their plight. I’m not condoning how they reacted, but I get why they were so angry. I mean, we grew up being taught that Sati was bad.

NJ: Tum angrez abhi bhi sati ke peeche pade ho. It wasn’t about Sati, it was about the dream sequence. Ab tumhe doguna lagaan dena padega.

SH: Oh shit! Really? They didn’t care about their dying rani, they were more offended by Khilji’s wet dreams? I mean, Alauddin Khilji could have dreamt about anything in the world. He probably dreamt of Padmavati on more than one occasion, and to have a problem with Bhansali trying to depict it in a movie, is irrational.

NJ: Oh the dream sequence yes, I’m sure he never dreamt of Padmavati ever, even though he waged a war for her, got his dear soldiers killed and sweated the Rajasthan summer out, he never dreamt of her. Every time he closed his eyes and thought of her, Shahid’s big angry forehead vein would make a guest appearance.

NJ: Was there a dream sequence between Khilji and Padmavati? Of course not, Jim (third wheel) Sarbh would have none of it. But if you are a seasoned Bollywood buff, you can see the gaping holes that are most probably the result of multiple cuts the film had to suffer.

SH: If only we could get our hands on a version where the only cut was Malik Kafur’s manhood.

*NJ will vouch for me for not being a homophobe. Please don’t riot, Kafur ke descendents. Oh wait, there aren’t any.*

SH: As far as acting in Indian cinema is concerned, Ranveer Singh should just be handed every single award there is. No, I am not saying he is the Heath Ledger of India, but he’s the closest thing we have. He was into Khilji like his life depended on it. (NJ: Hope you aren’t talking about Sarbh!)

NJ: When Khilji looks at you with his hardened eyes mad with desire and violence, you can sense the pure savagery that drove the Rajput women to commit ‘jauhar’. For all his accurate portrayal, you hate Alauddin Khilji and want him dead. That’s when you know Ranveer has nailed the role. No wonder he needed psychiatric help to come out of the character’s skin.

SH: Deepika’s fear as she was stepping into the fire looked so real. It was hard to believe she could portray such emotion when the CGI fire was so pathetic. Then again, I’m guessing that fear was so real since there were so many people who wanted her dead. Every shoot of Deepika’s probably started off with a crew member reading out the death threats she received. That’s dedication on a whole new level.

NJ: Khilji se darr nahi lagta saab, Karni Sena se lagta hai.

SH: Are you saying they won?

NJ: Of course…

KS: “Jhuka Bhansali, Jeeta Rajput!”

NJ: One thing that deserves a special mention, and probably an award, is the kickass CGI on Deepika’s midriff. I did not blink once during the entire ‘Ghoomar’ song. I mean, looking for a computer generated wardrobe malfunction is tough.

SH: Never have I seen some 300 odd people staring at a woman’s belly so attentively. Even if Bhansali himself was dancing in the background, Karni Sena wouldn’t have noticed.

'Padmaavat' Review: Khilji Se Darr Nahi Lagta Saab, Karni Sena Se Lagta Hai© Viacom 18 Motion Pictures

NJ: If there’s one thing I could have changed about the film (if I had enough political clout), it would be Malik Kafur’s unrequited love for Khilji. They could have given him a dream sequence at least. The Khiljis wouldn’t have minded, I think.

SH: Yeah, one steamy dream sequence would do. Deepika nahi toh Sarbh hi sahi. Don’t worry Jim, I’d be doing the same thing if I was onscreen with a topless Ranveer.

NJ: Maybe the Rajputs should have written an epic of their own. After all, history is just institutionalised fiction, like Khilji shows us when he burns the documents that don’t bear his name. History is history and Bhansali doesn’t change it. But, Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem ”Padmawat” was a work of fiction, so is Bhansali’s period film.

SH: The fact that there is going to be so much unwarranted debate about this movie is proof that we may be living in the 21st century, but our thoughts and ideals, like Khilji’s dreams, are censored!

karani-sena-members-protestA day before the release of ‘Padmaavat’, protests against the film intensified across several states with members of several fringe outfits taking out rallies, blocking roads and damaging vehicles.

Earlier in the day, 48 people were arrested in Ahmedabad for indulging in violent acts over the film’s release. In fact, on Tuesday night, dissenting outfits unleashed violence and arson in parts of the city.

Mobs attacked shops, torched vehicles, and pelted stones. The destroyed property included at least 200 vehicles, including bikes and cars, that were either set ablaze or damaged.

Subsequently, theatre owners across Gujarat on Wednesday announced their intention to not give the film a screening till the matter was resolved, to ensure “the safety of customers as well as to save their property.”

In Mumbai, more than 35 supporters of Rajput Karni Sena, one of the groups opposed to the film’s release, were detained.

Police also arrested the Karni Sena’s Chittorgarh unit chief, after its spokesperson declared that over 1,900 women of the community were “ready” to commit “jauhar” or mass immolation.

In Gurugram, protesters torched a bus and pelted stones, while in Meerut, they threw stones at a mall.

“Eight-10 masked men had come to pelt stones at PVS mall. Police is on the lookout for the men. We will provide security to the mall at the time of screening of the film,” ANI quoted Civil Lines circle officer Chakrapani Tripathi as saying about the situation in Meerut.

Later in the day, clubs and bars in Gurugram were ordered closed from 7pm in view of the disturbances. The closure is expected to continue till further orders are passed by the authorities, reported ANI.

Agitators also blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway.

In Madhya Pradesh, nearly 200 protesters blocked National Highway 3, which links Agra with Mumbai, in Indore district and broke glass bottles on the road, PTI reported. Protesters also tried to stop vehicles.

Some 50 activists of the Karni Sena burnt an effigy of the film’s director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Indore-Depalpur road.

The Karni Sena also gave a call for a ‘janta curfew’ on January 25 – the day of the film’s release. This move is meant to prevent people from watching ‘Padmaavat’.

The group’s chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi said a ‘janta curfew’ on cinema halls would mean that the public will stop the film from being exhibited.

“We are adamant on our stand that this film should be banned. There should be a self-imposed curfew by people,” he said.

Kalvi claimed that leaders of the Shiv Sena had assured the Karni Sena of their support in Maharashtra, reported PTI.

He also rejected as “rumours” reports that some members of his outfit had watched the film ahead of its release.
The Rajasthan government accepted the people’s right to protest, even as it asked that they remain within the “framework of law and order.”

“We have appealed to protesters that if they want to protest while being within framework of law and order, they can go ahead with it. As a matter of fact, there aren’t many cinema halls in Rajasthan who are ready to screen the film,” the state’s home minister Gulab Chand Kataria said.

Several fringe groups allege that ‘Padmaavat’ distorts history and shows the Rajput community in bad light.

Despite the censor board clearing the film for release, four states – Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana – had banned its screening. Their move was later overturned by the Supreme Court.

padmavaatThe Supreme Court’s green signal for an all-India screening of “Padmaavat” notwithstanding, Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi on Wednesday said the Rajput organization won’t allow the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial to be released as it shows the Rajput queen in less than honorable light.

“We are adamant on our stand that this film should be banned. January 25 may come and go but we won’t let the film release, come what may,” Kalvi said.

He asked people for a self-imposed curfew to boycott the movie that “insults the mother, Rani Padmavati”.

Asked about the violence being perpetrated in the name of banning the movie, Kalvi said it was “sad”, but held Bhansali responsible for it.

In 2014, former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s media advisor (2004-2008) and Indian policy analyst, Sanjaya Baru, stirred up quite a storm with the release of his controversial book, ‘The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh’. The book, back then, gave fodder to the opposition and the nation to question Manmohan Singh’s powers and the impact of the Congress party and its leader Sonia Gandhi, on the decisions he made during his tenure.

While, the book alleged that he was not entirely in control of his cabinet, Singh, however, asserted that there was no truth or authenticity in the account. Well, fast forward to the present time and we already know that a movie on the same is in the works.

We already know that actor Anupam Kher will take on the challenging role of Manmohan Singh in ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, and now another pivotal cast member has been revealed and it looks amazing.

35-year-old German-born actress, Suzanne Bernert has been roped in to step into the shoes of Sonia Gandhi, in this upcoming Indian biographical political film. Surprisingly, this is not the first time she will be portraying Sonia Gandhi on-screen. According to Economic Times, Bernert has earlier played Gandhi in a political documentary TV series titled ‘Pradhanmantri’. This TV series was hosted by actor and director Shekhar Kapur. The show chronicled the history of India, starting from the post-Independence days.

While, the makers had their eyes set on an Italian actress for this critical role, they changed their minds after watching Bernert’s audition. Producer Sunil Bohra, who has earlier worked on movies like ‘Shahid’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ series told ET, “Not only does she look the part, but her dialogue delivery is identical to Sonia Gandhi’s. Her audition was truly persuasive.”

Bernert is not a new name in the entertainment industry. She has earlier acted in a lot of movies and daily soaps like ‘Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.’ and ‘Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat’.

Reportedly, actors for the roles of Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have also been shortlisted.

Directed by Vijay Gutte, ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ is expected to release on December 21, 2018 and despite being low-key, we feel the film has everything it needs to break the internet and rule the box-office.

Bigg Boss 11 contestant Arshi Khan is in news for reportedly signing a film opposite Prabhas

arshi khan

Arshi Khan was Bigg Boss season 11’s most entertaining and one of the most controversial contestants. The reality star had made claims of being in an relationship with Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi and had even made atrocious claims of being physically intimate with him. However, this time she has make it to the headlines for a good reason. Recently, Arshi Khan had hosted a party for her Bigg Boss participants according to a report in Mumbai Mirror .

Among those who attended were Vikas Gupta, Akash Dadlani, Mehjabi Siddiqui and Jyoti Kumari. While she did not invite Puneesh Sharma, Bandgi Kalra or Zubair Khan, she did send invitations to Shilpa Shinde and Hina Khan. The two actresses, however, did not attend the party.

“Hina has been in hiding ever since she came out of the house. She was sent an invitation, but she did not turn up,” revealed Arshi.

Arshi’s relationship with Bigg Boss 11 winner Shilpa Shinde saw many twists and turns on the show. While she initially praised her for being like a ‘maa’ (mother), Arshi later mocked her for it. On asking why Shilpa did not show up at her party, Arshi shared an audio clip the actress had sent in reply, in which she insulted the invitation using the choicest abuses.

When asked about rumours that she will be making her movie debut opposite Prabhas, she neither confirmed nor denied them. All she said was, “I am starting my film career in the South and I am heading to Hyderabad for the same soon. I can’t say anything more unless it is officially announced.”

shah-rukh-khanShah Rukh Khan, along with actor Cate Blanchett and singer-songwriter Elton John, received awards at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Monday for the work raising awareness about human rights issues. The 52-year-old Bollywood star received the award for showing an exemplary commitment to uphold human dignity through his non-profitable Meer Foundation.

Meer Foundation provides support to female victims of acid attacks and major burn injuries through medical treatment, legal aid, vocational training, rehabilitation and livelihood support. He has also been responsible for creating specialised children’s hospital wards and has supported childcare centres with free boarding for children undergoing cancer treatment.

It was his impassioned speech about women and child rights which had the world’s top policy makers and executives cheering for the actor. Here is SRK’s full speech from Davos…

Honoured to receive the @wef’s 24th Crystal Award, together with @eltonofficial and Cate Blanchett. My fan moment!!

— Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk) January 22, 2018

I am genuinely and deeply grateful for this honour and it is a privilege to be in the company of two phenomenal and extraordinary human beings and talent, Cate Blanchett and Sir Elton John

She is of course a lady who commands the wind and you sir command the song of a billion hearts, including mine. I am really touched that I am chosen between these two. Just a special request, before you go, can I do a selfie? Now, there I have embarrassed my children.

Actors are renowned narcissists. No matter how much we pretend not to believe in external beauty, we tend to be obsessed by it one way or the other. And perhaps being surrounded by this obsession of beauty, a few years ago I came across a lady who had been brutalised by an acid attack. It kind of changed my life or my perspective of it, at least.

To disfigure a woman by throwing acid on her face, to me, is one of the basest, crudest acts of subjugation imaginable. At the source of it lies the view that a woman does not have the right to assert her choice, say no to the advances of a man or a group of people. And yet, each of the women I met, I found within them the courage to move on with their lives and reject the idea of victimhood. What struck me most about them was this — what was done to them only made them braver, stronger and able to free themselves, to make the choices everyone around them was telling them they could not make or should not make. From them I have learnt how courage can catalyse victimhood into heroism, how solidarity — rather than charity – enables the human will to overcome, how equality is not a concept but a truth that encompasses all living beings, how service of others is not a choice anymore for any of us but it is a duty that all of us must fulfill in the name of humankind.

When I journeyed through the life of these heroic women and children through the work of Meer Foundation, I experienced a complete reversal of perspective. I stumbled upon the truth that there are no benefactors and beneficiaries between living beings anymore. There is just a vast pool of resources – natural, spiritual, economic and technological – that everyone is equally entitled but some have gained by more access to it. Either by accident, as in my case, or by talent, design and hard work as in the case of all of you present here. Standing here before all of you who constitute perhaps the most powerful group of human beings in the world, I dare say power is one of these perspectives we like to maintain a certain way but power actually needs a complete reversal more than any other thing in the world today.

I was babysitting my five-year-old son before I came here today and suddenly he screamed, “Papa, papa my eye went into my hair. Can you get my eye out of my hair?” He didn’t say get my hair out of my eye, like we all believe we do. And it is a bit like that when you have power, you think things get in its way but it is actually power that is getting in the way.

It gets in the way of universal access to resources because it seeks to control and enclose them so we, the powerful, need to get out of the way, I think. To pick the barriers apart – the ones that give us names and colours and races and hierarchies. We need to get out of the way and into the work of breaking open access for each and every one with a true sense of ourselves but not as more powerful or less privileged, but genuinely as equals. That is what I have learned from my beautifully scarred women. I am thankful to these brave women and children who I work with for all they have done for me, to World Economic Forum and all of you present here for recognising the heroism by conferring this award upon me.

I want to thank my sister, my wife and my little daughter for bringing me up well and teaching me the value of requesting, sometimes imploring and begging a yes from a woman, instead of forcing it upon her.
