On Thursday night, pictures of Ranbir Kapoor and ‘Raees’ actress Mahira Khan smoking outside a restaurant in New York went viral on social media. In no time, the pictures broke the internet. The actress faced a lot of criticism for her choice of clothes and smoking, further questioning her dignity. She was wearing a white backless dress, whereas Ranbir Kapoor was seen sporting a grey t-shirt with military green pants and smoking. In one of the photos, Pakistani actress Mahira was also spotted with a love bite on her back, while smoking with Ranbir.

Many Bollywood celebrities like Varun Dhawan, Parineeti Chopra, and others have come out in support of Mahira Khan, who was slut-shamed. The latest actress to defend Mahira is Taapsee Pannu. Talking about this distasteful act, the ‘Pink’ actress told Mumbai Mirror, “Today, anyone with a cell phone is paparazzi and it’s difficult for celebs to have a normal life. On one hand we are criticised for having security and getting special access but when we try to live like normal beings in another country, pictures like these are clicked and leaked. Such people need to get a life!”

Taapsee, too, was recently called out for sporting a bikini in her upcoming picture ‘Judwaa 2’, wherein she shut the attackers with a solid response. She also spoke about this to the publication. The talented actress said, “This kind of social media shaming is like a hidden clause that you sign up for if you’re a public figure. To be honest I was expecting it from the so-called ‘flagbearers of nationality and morality’ and fortunately it happened on a good day. Usually, I don’t reply to these hate tweets because I don’t want these guys to get unnecessary attention but on that particular day, I woke up on the right side of the bed and had a funny answer to their tweet.

My sister, Shagun, was also ready to reply with her bikini picture but before that, the man deleted his tweet.” For the uninitiated, rumours of Ranbir Kapoor dating Pakistani actress Mahira Khan started doing the rounds in early July, when they both walked the red carpet of the Global Teacher Prize Ceremony together in Dubai.

While the West has the likes of Ramsay Bolton or Gordon Ramsay, we at one point had something deadlier than them – The infamous

Ramsay brothers and their epic collection of horror movies. Terms like cringeworthy, bizarre and sleazy don’t even begin to define these iconic horror movies, which at one point were the only source of entertainment for us. Although our film-makers have come a long way from where they began, back in the day we loved to watch a white saree-clad pyaasi chudail in some shady puraani haveli, taking revenge from some lustful zamindaar who possibly murdered her.

The Most Hilarious Indian Horror Movies Of All Times

But, we have to give the 80s or 90s movies some brownie points, because they didn’t have any of the latest technology or VFX to f**k things up, they just ruined these movies solely with their acting along with baseless and senseless scripts. We agree that some films were truly amazing and way ahead of their time, but then these movies were released and we lost our hopes in Bollywood (in making good horror movies) all over again. While others would talk about ‘The Exorcist’, we were scratching our heads deciding which DVD to burn, ‘Amawas Ki Raat’ or ‘Khoon Ki Pyaasi Daayan’.

But we can’t be selfish and keep all these golden movies to ourselves. Since life is all about sharing, we would like to make your souls cringe as well with these hilariously shitty horror movies from back in the day. Feel free to send in your suggestions to add to this list.

1. Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche – 1972

A disloyal wife and her boyfriend kill her rich husband and bury him 6 ft under the ground. So is the key to the locker that has all the cash, which they desperately wanted. The man now returns as a zombie to avenge his death. Don’t even try to find any logic here because it was buried with that man.

2. Dak Bangla – 1987

A man moves into a mansion as a caretaker along with his wife, and suddenly finds himself being haunted by a mummy in the dungeon with a dark past. Don’t look around for a man wrapped in white toilet paper, because Indian mummies don’t follow dress codes. The guy with the red face is ‘mah man’.

3. Mahakaal – 1993

Archana Puran Singh, known for her *ahem* ‘subtle’ laughter, is the lead actress constantly under the attack of a man wearing steel claw gloves. Yes, this one is apparently based on the American horror film ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’. They tried copying the West but then the Ramsay brothers saw the Bollywood signboard and rerouted the script to fit in magical snakes, sacrifices and a bloodthirsty evil magician, Shakal.

4. Papi Gudia – 1996

Who needs Annabelle when you have a ‘Papi Gudia’ at your disposal? The gist of the movie is that a black magic practitioner transfers his soul to a doll, which then starts to walk, talk and kill people. We bet even Karishma Kapoor will not remember being a part of this film.

5. Purani Haveli – 1989

Call it budget constraints or love for underground dungeons, but Bollywood seems to be fascinated by purani havelis and the various victims it draws to the monsters locked in there. Add a tinge of a soppy love story and a spoonful of a lustful butthurt loser plotting against the main leads and there you have the recipe for a classic, f**ked up horror movie.

6. Khoon Ki Pyaasi Daayan – 1998

A tantric tells a man to sacrifice two girls to improve his sex drive and manliness. Again don’t ask us about logic, we just lost it at the baseless connection between killing women and improving one’s sex life. It’s like charging your friend’s smartphone in hopes of getting a full battery for yours.

7. Pyaasa Shaitan – 1990

Literal translation – thirsty Satan! We understand some men are thirsty, but you don’t really have to make it obvious with such crappy movies. The film tells the story of a demon who sacrifices young women to attain immortality, just like the directors wanted us to sacrifice our brains before watching this insanity!

8. Khooni Panja – 1991

We know people are possessed by ghosts, but this movie is special because here a girl gets possessed by the scary hand of a woman who was murdered by her in-laws, hence the name panja. The woman then seeks revenge against those who killed the owner of that ghost hand. *Facepalm*

9. Phir Wahi Raat – 1980

Who wants to celebrate their birthday with their friends, when you can celebrate one in a haunted house in the countryside? Well, at least Asha and her boyfriend Dr. Vijay consider it a ‘killer’ birthday plan. Quite literally, because Asha is soon haunted by a grotesque woman, who wants to kill her. Sounds fun!

10. Khooni Murdaa – 1989

What’s worse than an obsessive lover? A dead, obsessive lover who comes back to kill his murderers one by one. We hope Bappi Lahiri’s music can help us sit through this one.

Other honorary mentions are Purana Mandir (1984), Bandh Darwaza (1990), Amawas Ki Raat (1990), Andhera (1975), Dahshat (1981), Aur Kaun? (1979) and Sannata (1981). Now you can you go and tag your friends and ruin the horror genre for them.

Guess what, you horror movie freaks? Pennywise the evil clown is making a coming back for the sequel of the record breaking, highest grossing film ‘It’. The film is scheduled to be released at a theatre near you, in less than two years; in September 2019.

The second half of Stephen Kings’ marvelous scary-to-the-hilt rendition will be directed by Andy Muschietti . If you remember, the first half ends with the kids finally sending Pennywise back where he came from. Since Pennywise surfaces after every 27 years, the second half will focus on the kids from the ‘Loser’s Club’, when they’re all grown up, 27 years later, and are brought back together by a devastating phone call.

The sequel was envisioned from the start, when Gary Dauberman penned the first part. He will also be writing the second half, while Muscheitti gets ready to direct it. The kids from the ‘Loser’s Club’ will be in their 30’s to early 40s roughly and many actors have already been suggested on social media to fit their roles. Let’s see who gets to fight the clown and send him back to hell, this time!

‘It’ was a huge success in the horror movie genre, not just for this year, but for every horror movie ever made; ‘It’ surpassed box office collections and beat even ‘The Exorcist’, earning a record breaking $123million in the US. ‘It’ also had the biggest opening for an R-rated movie, largest opening for a movie based on a book and the best opening for a New Line release and get this, ‘It’ is almost nearing half a billion worldwide! If this one didn’t scare you, we really don’t know what will!

Coming back to the sequel though, we’re sure it will do justice to the first one and give us a peek into the lives of the seven kids who bravely fought the monster, in order for him to stop haunting them, for the next 27 years. The sequel will be titled ‘It: Chapter II’ and we’re more than curious where the story is heading, with the scary clowns haunting adults now, or wait, will he be haunting their kids instead? Only one way to find out! Let the wait begin.

Bollywood films have entertained us for over 100 years now. It all began from ‘Raja Harishchandra’ (India’s first ever film) which dates back to 1913. The journey since then has been full of ups and downs. Bollywood gave us stories to cherish forever and there have been a few films which transcended boundaries and became popular in western countries too. Let us throw light on films which received immense love and popularity over a period of time.

Mother India (1957)

The success of the film can be figured out through its nomination in Academy Awards (1958), ‘Mother India’ remains India’s pride till date. Starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar and Rajendra Kumar, the film portrays the story of a poverty-stricken woman who raises her sons all by herself and becomes an example for others. The film portrays the image of an ideal Indian woman in those times. Though ‘Mother India’ lost the Oscar by just one vote, it is however believed to be a film larger than life.

Pyaasa (1957)

Directed and played by Guru Dutt, the film is said to be his best works ever. The plot of the movie revolves around the life of a struggling poet, trying to make his works published in post-independence India. He later meets Gulabo, a prostitute with a heart of gold who helps to get his poems published. The film is a true representation of an artist’s thirst for fame, and how he loses his battle with the hypocritical society that rejected his pioneering work. After many years of Guru Dutt’s death, the film received the cult title and turned out to be a fine example of film-making and acting.

Sholay (1975)

Believed to be one of the greatest blockbusters of all times, ‘Sholay’ changed the scenario of film-making in Bollywood forever. Honestly, the fact that B.o.B is more famous for his flat earth conspiracy theories than his actual rapping career says a lot about him.

Despite all the scientific proof in the world, he is completely convinced that the earth is ‘as flat as a pancake’, and now he now he is dead set on proving this theory. Last week, he launched a GoFundMe page in an effort to ‘find the curve’.

The rapper is hoping to raise $200,000 to help him launch satellites into space in order to prove everything that is already a scientific fact and has been proven before.

“It’s Flat-Earth B.o.B,” he says in a YouTube video posted to the page. “I’m starting a GoFundMe because I would like to send one, if not multiple, satellites as far into space as I can, or into orbit as I can, to find the curve. I’m looking for the curve.”

The 29-year-old musician is quite a well-known conspiracy theorist, and he posts a lot about it.

Science said it, not me pic.twitter.com/rmdm67iHm6

— B.o.B (@bobatl) August 31, 2017

Back in January 2016, he even posted a series of tweets, which he claimed was proof that the earth is flat.

The cities in the background are approx. 16miles apart… where is the curve ? please explain this pic.twitter.com/YCJVBdOWX7

— B.o.B (@bobatl) January 25, 2016

“No matter how high in elevation you are… the horizon is always eye level … sorry cadets… I didn’t wanna be it either,” he wrote. “I’m going up against the greatest liars in history … you’ve been tremendously deceived.”

This even caught the attention of astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who hit back with straight up facts.

@bobatl Earth’s curve indeed blocks 150 (not 170) ft of Manhattan. But most buildings in midtown are waaay taller than that.

— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) January 25, 2016

@bobatl Polaris is gone by 1.5 deg S. Latitude. You’ve never been south of Earth’s Equator, or if so, you’ve never looked up.

— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) January 25, 2016

The feud escalated with B.o.B’s diss track “Flatline,” and continued with a diss track from Tyson called “Flat to Fact” that he wrote with his nephew. “I’m bringing facts to combat a silly theory because B.o.B has gotta know the planet is a sphere,” Tyson’s nephew raps on the track.

B.o.B’s campaign currently has raised around $650 out of the $200,000, so it’s a long way to go as of now, but if he’s actually able to pull it off, it will be the most hilarious thing ever!

Alia will be seen essaying a Kashmiri woman’s character, who’ll be working for the Indian Intelligence, spying on her husband, a Pakistan Army man, played by Vicky Kaushal.

After a decent opening weekend, the box office collection of Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao’s film, which is India’s official entry to Oscars, ‘Newton’ has dropped on Day 4. According to reports, ‘Newton’ has earned Rs 1.40 crore on Monday, taking its total box office collection of 4 days to Rs 8.30 crore. ‘Newton’ has seemingly got a push after it was declared India’s official entry to Oscars and the word of mouth has helped the movie too.

'Newton' box-office collection Day 4: Rajkummar Rao's film dips on Monday
Rajkummar Rao in ‘Newton’

According to a report in Boxofficeindia.com, director Amit Masurkar’s ‘Newton’ slowed down on Monday after having a good jump in its collections over the weekend.

‘Newton’ clashed with Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film ‘Bhoomi’ and Shraddha Kapoor’s ‘Haseena Parkar’ on Friday. If the opening weekend collections are any indication, Rajkummar Rao’s satire seems to be the audience’s pick among the three Bollywood releases. While it did open on a weak note on Friday, the Amit Masurkar-directed black comedy showed an exponential rise over the following two days. With collections of Rs 2.52 crore on Saturday and Rs 3.42 crore on Sunday, it enjoyed a strong opening weekend of Rs 6.90 crore.

While Shraddha Kapoor’s biopic lagged behind at Rs 6.1 crore, Sanjay Dutt’s father-daughter drama managed to garner Rs 7.48 crore over the first weekend. What is noteworthy though is that ‘Newton’ showed higher collections than both films on Saturday and Sunday. It can’t be denied that Newton’s selection as India’s official entry to Oscars raised the audience’s interest in the film.

‘Newton’, however, has courted controversy amid reports that the film has striking similarities with an Iranian movie ‘Secret Ballot’. ‘Newton’ director Amit V Masurkar says he was completely unaware of the Iranian film ‘Secret Ballot’ and that people should watch both the films and compare to find out if they are copied.

‘Newton’ has been chosen as India’s official selection for Oscars 2018. A day after this news was announced, several reports came out claiming that the film has been inspired by a 2001 Iranian movie titled ‘Secret Ballot’, helmed by Babak Payami. It focuses on the life of a ballot officer who visits a barren and desolate place to plead with voters to cast their votes and take part in the elections.

‘Newton’ had its world premiere at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival and won the International Confederation of Art Cinemas Award for best film in the ‘Forum Section’.

Newton‘, which stars National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao, revolves around a government employee who struggles to supervise voting in a forest area of Chhattisgarh, controlled by Maoists.

Producer Marco Mueller feels that there was not even a hint of plagiarisation in Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Newton’, amidst claims that the movie has been inspired from his 2001 Iranian film ‘Secret Ballot’.

On Monday night, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, in a Facebook post, shared Muller’s opinion after watching ‘Newton’. The filmmaker praised the Amit Masurkar-directed movie. Kashyap also took a dig at those claiming the movie was inspired by Babak Payami’s 2001 directorial venture.

“Newton is as much a copy of Secret Ballot as The Avengers is of Watan Ke Rakhwale. Newton is an award winner from Berlin Fest and I can promise you those curators watch more films in a year than the rest of us do in a lifetime,” Kashyap wrote.

‘Newton’ is all set to be India’s official entry into Oscars. The movie deals with a topic that is ignored but is very important , and stars the brilliant Rajkummar Rao in the lead.

It could be a scene from a brilliant movie, or an innocent line like ‘Aao kabhi haveli par’, but in the eyes of the meme world on Twitter, all are juicy options to crack jokes. A scene from ‘Newton’ is now going viral for all the funny reasons. The scene in particular which is floating as a meme has Rajkummar saying ‘likh ke dijiye’ to Pankaj Tripathi. You think it’s nothing? LOL.
