‘Dil Chahta Hai’ is one of those films that changed the way we look at and think about films. It not only became a cult flick but was appreciated and loved by everyone. The film gave us friendship goals and also taught us a lot about life. Still, when we remember DCH, it makes us all nostalgic and brings a smile on our faces.

Starring Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan, the film revolved around the lives of three friends and its complexities, giving it all a realistic feel. Well, one of the reasons many youngsters could connect to the film was because the story of Akash, Siddharth, and Sameer was so damn relatable. A lot of us have gone through what those characters went through.

But have you ever thought about how ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ turned out if some other actors were cast in place of Saif Ali Khan and Aamir Khan?

Not many know this fact, but Farhan Khan had a very different cast in mind than what we saw on-screen. I am sure the thought of seeing someone else as Akash and Sameer already makes us cringe!

Just Recently, Farhan appeared on Neha Dhupia’s podcast show “No Filter Neha” and revealed a lot about our all-time favourite film. And seriously, we thank god that some of his first choices never made it onscreen.

Farhan revealed that not Aamir Khan but Akshaye Khanna was always his first choice for the film.

“Akshaye Khanna was always the first choice. He was the first guy I ever met for that film. And I actually met him at that time because I wanted to cast him in the role that Aamir eventually played. So I spoke to him for the role that was Aakash,” Farhan disclosed.

Did you know that the actor-director had an entirely different star cast in mind for the film, something that we can’t even think of.

Dil Chahta Hai (c) Giphy

“I wanted him (Akshaye Khanna) to play Aakash. I wanted Hrithik as Sameer and I wanted Abhishek as Sid. That was my ideal casting.”

Looks like even the gods weren’t in favour of Farhan’s dream cast. Well, aren’t we just glad that things turned out differently?

Varun Dhawan. Pic/Satej ShindeVarun Dhawan. Pic/Satej Shinde

Five years into Bollywood, Varun Dhawan has already earned a place for himself. In an industry that chooses to separate its stars from actors, many find him the perfect combination of the two. Eight-film-old Dhawan has successfully straddled commercial hits with serious, gritty films that bring his acting prowess to the fore.

But Dhawan says the tag of ‘star’ sits heavy on his shoulders. Speaking at the Jagran Cinema Summit held in the city yesterday, the actor said, “The term star is totally misused today. I think the media makes anyone a star these days.”

He agreed that many from the current crop of actors, including himself, enjoy a wide fan following across the country. But he stated that it can’t be the only barometer to judge one’s stardom. “There is a difference between liking someone and being mad about someone. You need mass hysteria to be a superstar. From Rajesh Khanna to Amitabh Bachchan, and even Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan — these are real stars. This is a tag that we should not give away too easily.”

According to the youngster, a person “whose film works in the single screens as well as at multiplexes” is a star. Not one to be deluded by the fan frenzy that surrounds him, Dhawan said, “People always love us when we are at public events. They are hooting and whistling, but this doesn’t translate into box-office success. I don’t think people who come to see you at events always come and watch your film.”

Dhawan also brought up how the young generation of actors often gets rattled by criticism. “The millennials are shaken if they are criticised. Actors today are going under depression and battling anxiety,” he said, adding that social media aggravates the situation.

Thumbs Up:  Stellar performance, interesting story, and Kaavaan Kaavaan song

Thumbs Down: The first half can be a bit boring at times

To watch or not to watch: Book your tickets now!

Kishan Girhotra (Farhan Akhtar) has always dreamt of becoming a singer and forming his own band. Everything is shattered when, suddenly, he is accused of murder and is handed life imprisonment. In jail, he gets an opportunity to form a band with few fellow inmates Parminder Gill (Gippy Grewal), Victor Chattopadhyay (Deepak Dobriyal), Purushottam Madan Pandit (Rajesh Sharma) and Dikkat Ansari (Inaamulhaq) in Lucknow Central prison with the help of an NGO worker, Gayatri Kashyap (Diana Penty). Kishan’s master plan is to escape the prison on Independence Day. Now what’s left for viewers is to see is if he will achieve his dream of forming a band in the prison or jailbreak?

Still wondering to watch or not to watch? Here are 3 reasons of why you should watch this film:

1. Entertaining and Interesting

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Lucknow Central is one of the more entertaining films of the year. Giving us a glimpse into life (and politics) in the prison, the story engages us from the start. What makes the story even more interesting is the cat and mouse chase between the jailor (Ronit Bose Roy) and Krishan. It is their equation that totally makes this film worth a watch.

2. Stellar Performances

Farhan Akhtar is too good to be true.. As one would expect from him, he has donned his character so well that you just can’t take your eyes off him. He totally rocks the show and supporting him are four wonderful actors – Gippy Grewal, Deepak Dobriyal, Rajesh Sharma and Inaamulhaq. It is because of them that Farhan’s character gets more depth.

Ronit Roy, once again, leaves us stunned with his acting. He is one of those rare actors who can pull off any role effortlessly. He owns his role and the audience will love him for that. Diana Penty is a delight to watch as is Ravi Kishan (Lucknow Chief Minister).

Lucknow Central(c) Viacom18

3. Has its own identity

Despite having a plot familiar to the recently released film ‘Qaidi Band’, the script of ‘Lucknow Central’ stands out. It might remind you of ‘Shawshank Redemption’, but the film has its own identity and the story of each inmate stands out on its own merit. The film leaves you with the basic thought of how do people live behind bars? What would life out there be like? Is everyone a criminal there?

Lucknow Central (c) Viacom18

MensXP verdict:

Those that might not have seen ‘Qaidi Band’ will instantly end up liking the premise of the film. While the first half might seem a bit slow, the actors’ stellar performance and entertaining script will ensure you watch it till the end.

It’s been three days since the much-awaited Apple Keynote 2017 and it doesn’t seem like that the hype around it would die down any soon. Along with three new iPhones, Apple also unveiled the Series 3 Apple Watch, upgraded the Apple TV, but the whole world just can’t get enough of iPhone X.

For months, the speculation around the phone was running wild with so many rumoured features, and now that it’s here, the world is just in awe over how much it has to offer. From debating about the over the top price, to turning it into the butt of all jokes, the iPhone X is the only thing everyone seems to want to talk about.

Even TV’s funny woman Ellen DeGeneres has decided to join in on all the fun and roasted the hell out of the iPhone X in one of the segments’ of her show ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ with jokes so bad, that they were good.

She started off by telling everyone what to do with our current phones now that the iPhone X is out : “If anyone has an iPhone, just throw that away, immediately on your way out. Just find a trash can and toss it.” Well obviously, since anything other than the iPhone X is now obsolete.

Next, she took it upon herself to answer the question that is on everyone’s mind : What the hell happened to iPhone 9?

She’s the only one who can manage to turn one of the lamest jokes ever hilarious.

She then proceeded to explain the phone’s name.

She had some great insight on the design change.

Talking about the target audience, she said, “It’s for those of us who cracked the front and thought ‘I can do better’.”

After taking a dig at the wireless charging feature by calling it a hotplate, she went on to talk about the technical stuff. Talking about the increase in the screen size, she made the perfect joke.

And finished it all by roasting the most famous feature – the facial recognition.

“All you have to do is scan your face once. And then again after you get a haircut. And then again after you get a nose job. And the again after you buy a hat.”

If we take into consideration all the horror movies that have hit the box office, 2017 has been a rather scary year. Especially since ‘It’ came out and changed the horror-movie game for good, people’s expectations have gone a notch further.

Fictional horror stories- whether in form of podcasts, shows or movies, have the ability of giving one nightmare for weeks. However real-life horror stories are a different game altogether because it’s always scarier knowing that real people experienced something so unreal.

But if that’s the kind of thing that excites you and you are willing to sacrifice your sleep, then here’s some good (or scary) news for you. Amazon Prime is here with its latest original programming venture, ‘Lore’.

‘Lore' Is A New Horror Show That Will Scare the Hell Out of You© Amazon

‘Lore’ originally, is one of the scariest and award-winning podcasts that talks about real-life scary stories and according to its website; it “exposes the darker side of history, exploring the creatures, people, and places of our wildest nightmares.”

The show will include 6 episodes for now and will be released on just the right day and date- Friday the 13th (of October); just in time for Halloween. It’ll blend together “dramatic scenes, animation, archive, and narration and reveal how our horror legends – such as vampires, werewolves, and body snatchers – are rooted in truth.” Since the executive producers of ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘The X-Files’ are behind this anthology series, expectations are at an all time high.

The trailer has definitely got us hooked as the series combines documentary footage, narration, and cinematic scenes to explore the most legendary horror myths. From what we can make out, it will feature the tale of a boy who has been given a living doll, a family whose home is inhabited by a spirit from the other side and a village that hunts for a murderous creature.

In case October feels too far, you should go ahead and listen to the podcast. Launched in 2015, the podcast averages 5 million monthly listeners and rightly so, as the narrator has the ability to weave actual accounts of unsolved mysteries together with regional mythology to tell deeply unsettling supernatural stories.

To listen to the podcast or for information about the show and the creator, you can visit their website.

Yes. She has done it again.

It was already a given that Kangana Ranaut was going to deliver a power-packed performance, but watching her acting her heart out as the uber cute, ultra dorky “Simran” is like watching butter sliding down hot toast- mesmerising!

As the title suggests, “Simran” is all about the amazingly talented Kangana Ranaut, who successfully keeps every eyeball in the hall glued to her throughout the film.

The only flaw in the movie lies with its lack of consistency.

The first half keeps you totally engaged, as you chuckle, giggle and snort at Ranaut’s antics. However, things go haywire in the second half.

Simran Review: Kangana Will Blow You Away…“Simran” Not So Much

Plot: Praful Patel (Kangana Ranaut) is a divorcee living in Georgia, United States with her parents and works in the housekeeping department of a hotel. However, there is another side to her seemingly innocuous character- thieving and gambling.

Before you know, one mishap leads to another and Praful’s life snowballs into a giant mess (expected at this point in the film)

Those among us who often find life taking control over our actions, whilst we sit back and watch it all go up in flames, will totally relate with “Simran”.

Simran Review: Kangana Will Blow You Away…“Simran” Not So Much

Simran leads a fairly drab life, as her father does not seem to think much of her, while her mother wants to see her daughter get settled in life.

Simran, however, has grand plans of her own. She wants to have her own apartment and escape her parent’s house.

As you keep watching one thing becomes obvious, Kangana has done her homework. She slips into the skin of her Gujarati role with apparent ease, reminding you of her “Tanu Weds Manu” days where she is a complete ‘Kanpuria’ right down to her abusive tongue.

Simran Review: Kangana Will Blow You Away…“Simran” Not So Much

Everything is fine until she switches gears into her gambling and theft mode. Praful becomes Simran, the name she adopts as a robber and that’s the point where the whole story starts losing its grip.

The second half struggles with the mood, tone, and story, distracting you from what the plot really is. Still, one manages to foresee the grave that Praful has dug for herself with her choices.

Eventually, the flat and predictable story line, inexplicable songs and finally the exhausting plot rains all over Ranaut’s impressive parade.

Simran Review: Kangana Will Blow You Away…“Simran” Not So Much

You may not find yourself rooting for Praful, but you will totally connect with her on different levels! Watch this film only for Kangana, as she flawlessly nails it. Again.

Just as Liam Neeson announces his retirement from action/thriller films because he feels he’s too old to play an action hero (hear that Shah Rukh?) we’ll see him in what we assume his last thriller, ‘The Commuter’, coming out early next year. The film seems enticing enough to hold our attention (at least that’s what we figured from the trailer) and it unfurls a dramatic criminal conspiracy Neeson is badly stuck in (as per usual).

We will see Neeson pair up with director Jaume Collet-Serra once again for this gripping mystery that unravels on the commuter rail that Neeson’s character takes daily for his commute. Micheal Woolrich (Neeson), an insurance salesman on his daily commute to work meets a mysterious woman (Vera Farmiga) who drags him into a criminal conspiracy and lures him into an enticing opportunity, which obviously comes with a downside.

Liam Neeson's Starring In A New Movie Early Next Year© slashFilm

The conversation between the two characters start when she sits next to him on the train and asks him to solve a riddle and uncover the identity of a hidden passenger on the train he’s on. Somehow the riddle turns a bit deadly and before you know it, Micheal is racing against time to solve the mystery before the last train station!

Okay, we’re not going to give away anymore of the movie. You can watch the teaser below and see what the fuss is all about.

‘The Commuter’ marks Liam Neeson and Jaume Collet-Serra’s forth movie together (enough already!), their last project being ‘Run All Night’, which was released back in 2015. We just feel this movie will do really well for Neeson post his big ‘retirement’ announcement. We expect to see a lot of his fans excited for this one as it might be his last thrillier’ish movie. Naturally you can expect Neeson to run through carriages holding a gun perhaps? And some phone action as well.

Liam Neeson's Starring In A New Movie Early Next Year© MovieWeb

His debut as an action hero was with the hit ‘Taken’, where he played a government official who is trying to find and reconnect with his daughter (watch it if you haven’t already!) and now with a dozen action movies under his belt, he plans to call it quits, right after ‘The Commuter’ hits the screens, second week of January, 2018.

Wait this one out; it’s definitely worth the winters!
