While Bollywood has forever been known to make movies ‘inspired’ by Hollywood, we now hear that the makers of the Hrithik Roshan starrer ‘Kaabil’ have been approached by 20th Century Fox for procuring the film’s remake rights. Sanjay Gupta confirmed the news in an interview as well. “It’s true that Fox, through Tomas Jegeus (President, Fox International Productions) has approached Hrithik. Even though the developments are too premature to talk about at this moment, it is an honour for the team. What is also exciting is that Kaabil has been declared the best film of 2017 via an online poll. So, it’s a double win for us.”

Remaking and being inspired from Hollywood is a common thing in the Hindi film industry but  ‘Kaabil’ would be the first Hindi film to be on the other side Rumour has it that the producers are thinking about casting Hrithik in the lead role and that is damn exciting.

Ironically, when ‘Kaabil’ was released, critics pointed out that Gupta had drawn inspiration from Hollywood’s ‘Blind Fury’ (1989) and even borrowed inspiration from  the Korean super hit film, ‘Broken’ (2014).

With a career spanning almost three decades, Vin Diesel has starred in quite a lot of movies. Even though we can’t think of ‘The Fast and Furious’ series without thinking of Vin Diesel as well, but there are so many other movies where he completely proves his acting skills. These are some movies that you should definitely check out if you haven’t already.

1. The Iron Giant (1999)

An animated movie set during the Cold War in 1957, ‘The Iron Giant’ follows a young boy named Hogarth Hughes, voiced by Eli Marienthal, who discovers a giant metallic robot that fell from space, with Vin Diesel playing the titular role of this giant robot. The movie revolves around both them, along with beatnik artist Dean McCoppin, trying to prevent the U.S. military and a paranoid federal agent from finding and destroying the Giant. Even though the movie received widespread critical acclaim from critics, it didn’t do that well at the box-office but, over the years, it has gathered a cult following, being hailed as a modern animated classic.

2. Boiler Room (2000)

This crime-drama movie follows Seth Davis, played by Giovanni Ribisi, a college dropout, attempting to win his father’s approval. He gets a job as a stock broker and finds success easily, but he soon realizes that the might not as legitimate as he thought. Diesel plays against his type and stars as a stock broker, giving us another look at his acting range.

3. Knockaround Guys (2001)

The movie follows the four sons of a mob boss as they team up to retrieve a bag of cash from a town in Montana which is ruled by a corrupt sheriff. Diesel is at his best in this film as he kicks some serious ass in one standout scene set in a bar. Just remember the number …500.

4. A Man Apart (2003)

‘A Man Apart’ is about an undercover DEA agent Sean Vetter, played by Vin Diesel, who is out to avenge the death of his wife, who was killed by a mysterious drug lord named Diablo. The story is thrilling and the action sequences are badass as well.

5. Strays (1997)

Last but not the least, ‘Strays’, which was Diesel’s feature length debut, followed Rick, a drug dealer and hustler, completely fed up his life and looking for a change, trying to find meaning in his existence. The movie not only stars Diesel in the main role, it is also produced and directed by him as well.

Shraddha Kapoor’s stint in Bollywood has been like a graph. From giving some decent performances in movies like ‘Aashiqui 2′ to some disastrous acting in ‘Half Girlfriend’, she has received love and flak in equal measures. However, that emotion is going to change with her upcoming movie, ‘Haseena Parkar.’

The actress will be seen playing the role of a sister to her real life brother, Sidhant Kapoor. She looks fierce and nails the role like a complete badass.

Her brother, who is essaying the role of Dawood Ibrahim looks very realistic as well.

The movie is set to release on 18th August 2017.

The Hindi film industry is home to a vast amount of talent, but most of its talented actors are often not given the right kind of fame that they deserve. While some actors have more than their fair share of accolades and adulation, most of the talented thespians are often relegated to the shadows. A mediocre film with huge star power will see huge box office collections, but films with an extremely good storyline and amazing actors hardly ever get a big release and fades away from public memory quite fast.

But, for when you have had enough of the so-called “talented” stars of Bollywood, do give the films made by these offbeat non-commercial actors a look to genuinely appreciate good cinema being made.

1. Abhay Deol

He doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind, and the characters he has played on-screen prove that. While he may have been a part of commercially successful films such as ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara’ and ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’, Abhay Deol is one actor who never got his due. His debut film ‘Socha Na Tha’ was a class apart and so have many of his other films been such as ‘Ek Chalis Ki Last Local’, ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’, and ‘Ahista Ahista’. Watch his films when you want to understand the depths to which actors can go to look convincing.

2. Radhika Apte

This pretty actress is truly an unconventional heroine and takes on roles that require her to be more than just a pretty face and supporting actor. She started her career with a small role in the fantasy film, ‘Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!’ in 2005 and then went on to deliver phenomenal hits such as ‘Rakta Charitra’and ‘Shor In The City’. While she may not have found success in Bollywood, she went on to deliver good projects in various regional language films, such as Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, and Telegu. She has even tried her luck in theatre and various short films. So, when you feel like watching good cinema that is high on quality, do watch Radhika’s short film ‘Kriti’ and ‘Ahalya’.

3. Kalki Koechlin

Who can forget Kalki’s tomboyish avatar Aditi in the film ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and as Lisa in ‘Ek Thi Daayan’? While these films attained commercial success, many of Kalki’s other films did not get the attention they deserved as they did not have the star power required to make them commercial hits. Do watch Kalki’s amazing performances in ‘Margarita With A Straw’, ‘That Girl In Yellow Boots’, ‘A Death In The Gunj’, ‘I Am’, and ‘Waiting’ to understand the depth of her performances. Apart from acting in films, Kalki is also a part of various stage plays and is known to voice her opinions strongly for any cause that she feels about.

4. Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan is probably the most underrated actor in the Hindi film industry. He has given some mind-blowing performances in movies such as ‘The Lunchbox’, ‘Hindi Medium’, ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, ‘Maqbool’, and ‘Haasil’, to name a few. He has also been a part of various international projects such as ‘Life Of Pi’, ‘Inferno’, ‘Jurassic Park’, and ‘The Namesake’. While his acting is no doubt excellent, Bollywood has failed to recognize his talents and he is often relegated to the roles of a supporting actor or when he is the male lead, the film fails to garner much support and is not a major hit. If you want to know the powerhouse of talent that is Irrfan Khan, do watch his films such as ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’, ‘Talvaar’, and ‘Madaari’.

5. Nawazuddin Siddiqui

He is the dark horse of the Indian film industry, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui has proven himself time and again. With films such as ‘Raman Raghav 2.0′, ‘Freaky Ali’, ‘Manjhi: The Mountain Man’, and ‘Haraamkhor’ to his credit, he is a force to be reckoned with. He is a powerhouse performer and his acting prowess is unmatched. In films like ‘Raees’, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, ‘Badlapur’, ‘Mom’, and ‘Talaash’, when he has been cast alongside famous actors, he has proven his mettle and outshone them.

6. Swara Bhaskar

Swara Bhaskar achieved commercial success after a string of failures with movies such as ‘Madholal Keep Walking’ and ‘The Untitled Kartik Krishnan Project’ when she played supporting roles in films like ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Raanjhanaa’, ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, and ‘Listen… Amaya’. When her solo hits ‘Nil Battey Sannata’ and ‘Anaarkali of Aarah’ did well on the box-office, it was then that critics stood up and took notice of her. However, she is yet to make it to the list of Bollywood’s A-listers. But, we do not see her complaining and she has been known to take a stance for important issues and is not one to back down from any controversies.

While these actors may have started out small, they are in no way behind the stars of today and have their own fan following, who religiously watch all their films.

We are not new to racism – racism on the basis of caste, class, religion, skin colour, social status; hell we even do it on the basis of regional identities. The discrimination against dark skin goes way back, when the Indian society was divided into 4 rigidly divided castes – Brahmins, Shudras, Vaishnavas, Kshatriyas. Dark skin was seen as unclean and a sign of impurity. We gained independence and a little bit of sense and the caste system had already been demolished, but the prejudices remained.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Tweet About Being Dark-Skinned In Bollywood© BCCL

Dark skin is still seen with disdain by many in our country. The obsession with fair skin is directly proportional to the contempt for dark skin. It affects both men and women, women more. How could our dear old Bollywood stay behind? The film industry is riddled with racist prejudices, sexism, misogyny, nepotism (going by the recent IIFA awards, unapologetically so), even though it has also functioned as a class equalizer.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Tweet About Being Dark-Skinned In Bollywood © Facebook

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the immensely talented actor with quite a few critically acclaimed performances to his credit, has thrown major shade at this colour-based racism prevalent in Bollywood. The actor tweeted:

Thank U 4 making me realise dat I cannot b paired along wid d fair & handsome bcz I m dark & not good looking, but I never focus on that.

— Nawazuddin Siddiqui (@Nawazuddin_S) July 17, 2017

Despite being an exceptionally gifted actor who has imparted depth to every role he essayed, Nawazuddin has faced discrimination due to his colour and unconventional looks. In his tweet, he hasn’t pointed out the context but it’s clear that the discrimination hasn’t gone down well.

In the film industry, looks often precede talent. It’s no secret that a good-looking actor will find it easier to enter the industry than someone who is not, even though he/she may be talented. Being stereotyped because of your looks is common in the industry – and dark skin comes on top of that list.

Thankfully, Twitter fares better than Bollywood, and people came out in support of Nawazuddin and showered him with compliments:

He need not even bother about looks because his talent speaks for itself and puts him at the top.

The first thing that you notice about Vivek Oberoi when you meet him in person is his optimistic nature and calm persona. Donning a casual navy blue shirt, Vivek gave us a warm smile nestling comfortably on his leather couch. 15 years ago, the actor made his Bollywood debut with Ram Gopal Verma’s ‘Company’, opting for a unconventional role than those stereotypical roles. Leaving us stunned with his honest acting in ‘Saathiya’ to playing Arjun Balachandran in ‘Yuva’, the actor has received his share of love and criticism. Over a bowl of freshly cut apples, sitting in his living room, the actor talks to MensXP about living in slums, rejections, being a feminist, relationship and his latest series Inside-Edge.

How would you describe your journey in Bollywood?

A rollercoaster ride (laughs). I have always tried to do things my way, I have broken boundaries, changed pieces, structures and definition ever since I joined the industry. When I joined the industry people said a hero has to be launched and my father said let me launch this guy. He was about to spend all the money he had earned to make a film which would be a big launch and my show reel. And that time I came back from New York after completing my masters in film and I was under the whole pressure that I can’t allow my dad to gamble on me. And if I have talent then I should get picked up anyway. That time I did something radical, I went to my dad and said I don’t want you to produce this film, he was like am I crazy? I went to Abbas Mastan, who was supposed to direct that film and said, sir, I am not willing to do this film. Because if it’s my father’s money that is going to get me a film then I don’t want it. If it’s my talent and you believe in me then take me. I went on to a journey where I decided to struggle. I dropped my father’s name and used to go everywhere as Vivek Anand which is my middle name. I started giving auditions, waiting in line for 6-7 hours waiting for them to only tell me that you can’t make it, and you don’t have it in you. One thing you get free in India is advice and they constantly kept giving me random advice.  Year, year and a half of rejection. Every time I got rejected, I used to make my mind stronger.

How did you get your first break?

One fine day I found out that Ram Gopal Verma is casting for his film ‘Company’. I landed up in his office and introduced myself to him. He said look you look too sophisticated, internationally educated. I am looking for a guy who is rough-tough from Mumbai’s slum, underbelly and you can’t do that character. I told him sir give me one chance. He said see you don’t look like it. I told him to give me a meeting after 15 days and just to get me out of his office, he said fine. Then I went and rented a ‘kholi’ in a slum and lived there for 15 days, literally using the sulabh shauchalaya and slept on a floor. I had massive cockroaches and rats around me. Watched their body language, and observed then came back out of that place after 15 days. Called a photographer friend, asked him to shoot photos of me in this look and said can’t pay you at the moment but if I make it will make sure you shoot a whole bunch of cover photos for me. Wearing torn vest, dirty pants and shirt, I landed at RGV’s office and watchman stopped me and I was like this is a victory. With beedi in my hand, smashing mud on my face from the flower pot I went to him and threw my picture on the table. I said, “Aye thopada kya dekhta hai photo dekh.” He looked at the picture, got up clapped and said have never seen an audition like this. He said you are the guy of my film and that’s how I got Company. And ever since I am trying to break the norms. When I got Saathiya, people told me am I crazy, doing such film, killing my career, I am an action hero and I should ask them to add some action scenes. Since then I kept trying to do different roles.

It’s very natural for an actor to venture into film production, what prompted you to take a different turn and get into infrastructure business?

I always had a business mind and wanted to do something which would have a social impact. My preference to get into any business is how I can make life better. How can I change someone’s life? Affordable housing is one such thing and it is life changing. A number of people who live in sub-human conditions, I have seen their lives when I stayed there. It’s a poverty trap. You pay unaffordable rents, when you can give payment on time, they grab your child and say will keep it until you pay them the amount, such things do happen. Physical and sex abuse is rampant, lack of infrastructure and sewage everywhere, that’s not how anyone is supposed to live. The idea was how to get these hard working people who aren’t in the banking system houses? How do you get them out of poverty trap? And with the grace of God, I have been successful. And the Prime Minister has a vision for housing for all, the timing for that has been perfect. So the effort is to build a community where their child has access to what your child has. There shouldn’t be a difference of having or have not.

You have been in news lately for all the goodwill you have earned. What prompts you to do so?

I try to be an agent of social change. It’s like I am doing this how many of you will follow or try to do such thing, so I try to show that it’s possible. So if I have donated 25 flats, there are 100 developers across the country who are huge, they can do this. For them, it’s nothing they can make it out of their CSR budget. It’s 2500 flats. 2500 families lost their sons, fighting for your nation, protecting your life, your child, your mother, your people. They suddenly have security a roof on their head, giving them a feeling that somebody cares for us. And it is so easy to do so. My thought is if I do it, others too can. The idea is to inspire people. It will be so cool when some young guy who takes over his dad’s developing business and says I am going to do this as well. I learned this from my mom, for 25 years she would relentlessly go and help the palliative care patients. And she would do various things for them. Even when their families wouldn’t go, she would know that person has just 20 days to live. To me, she is a real hero. I am a big feminist. I believe women shouldn’t fight for equality because they are unequal, they are superior.

Amazing love story of my little sister,Lalita Bansi,an acid attack survivor, got married today to an amazing man Ravi Shankar who loves her for who she is! Lalita is a true hero because she proves to thousands of acid attack survivors across the nation that this isnt a full stop, just a comma, life has so many possibilities!

Tell us about Vivek Oberoi, the family man

I think I am a ‘joru ka ghulam’. My wife is away with kids and her mother and here I am getting the kitchen remade for her, so when she comes back I give her this surprise. So I am trying to be a good husband.

What according to you makes a relationship work?

Respect! You know when we are in a relationship, we take each other for granted. We forget to respect each other. And when you don’t have that person, you release what you have lost, when that person is gone. I feel when you have that person, get up every day and respect that person. I do this thing, whenever I am missing my wife or thinking of her I spend two minutes thinking about how lucky I am and say pray of gratitude. I say thank you god for giving me this amazing person in my life. Thank you for this person who keeps this family together and has given so much to me. Just try to do this small ritual it can be for anyone, you parents, your best friend, your partner, anyone.

What made you pick up inside-edge and how is it different than the web-series we are already watching?

When Farhan Khan and Ritesh Sidhwani called me and explained me the subject, I realised it was huge and on another parameter. I was really happy that Amazon is coming here with such a commitment in the Indian market. It was a great time working with such great actors giving a brilliant performance. And the way it has been received online it’s incredible. When it went live, the next day I got a call from one of my person saying you are trending. Was I like ‘Inside Edge’? It is a paid trend, he said no you are trending, I was like good but I have been trending before also, so ok. But he was like it is not just India, you are trending worldwide. 5-6 hours I was trending and it was great. My character in the series is larger than life, playing chess with people’s life. Seducing them, luring them to the dark side. He will do anything to do whatever he can.

Talking about the difference, the budget, the making. Web-series generally are very small budget but which inside edge these people decided to get all out. It costs three times the film. The ads were everywhere, literally everywhere. And the platform it was released on people in more than 196 countries is watching us.

How was experience working with Richa Chadha?

Well, she is a great performer. She is natural and has got an incredible watchable personality. She is exceptional.

What web-series you binge-watch?

Lots! I love ‘The Man in the High Castle’, Game of Thrones, well who doesn’t love it? I haven’t watched the latest episode, I promised my wife we will watch it together. Game of Thrones is our thing together. I love House of Cards, it’s one of my favourite. I enjoyed Pitchers, Bang Baaja Baraat, Permanent Roommates. I watch a lot of shows.

What do you think is the future of the adult-comedy genre, since the Censor board is hyperactive these days?

It’s ridiculous. Censor board can’t be a decision making authority, it needs to be a guiding authority that’s all. It’s absurd what they are doing. I think the future for this is to go on the web and use that platform.

Richa Chadha faced continuity issues due to her fringe hairstyle in her recently released web series, Inside Edge. She was simultaneously shooting for Fukrey Returns, the sequel to the 2013 film.

She is reprising her character of the tough-talking female don, Bholi Punjaban. In part two, she is shown coming out of jail. There was no way she could be shown with a hip hairstyle, so Richa had to opt for a dishevelled look.

Veteran singers Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik turned down the songs of AR Rahman’s National Award-winning 1992 hit, Roja.

“When we were offered the project, we didn’t know who Rahman was. We would record five songs a day back then. Travelling to Chennai for recording seemed difficult,” says Yagnik, as Sanu adds, “That’s perhaps the greatest regret of our career. The album had such beautiful songs. We wish we had sung them.”

Nineties band Euphoria is known for its romantic songs. But in his latest offering, lead vocalist Dr Palash Sen discusses how humans are slaves to their thoughts and that is the genesis of all fear.

The singer says it took him five years to complete the single, Kabootar. “I am proud of the song. I don’t think anyone in the country has made something like this. I’m happy Euphoria keeps challenging themselves and the sensibilities of the audience,” he says, when we meet him at the Artist Aloud office. What prompted the song’s theme, we ask him.

“Indians feel trapped by situations and people. That could lead to depression or suicide. With this song and video, I have explained how fear is responsible for mental trauma. It’s important to break the shackles and become fearless.”

Dr Sen has used a caged pigeon as metaphor in the track. “Only the Kabootar could have been the perfect protagonist for a song like this. Most of our [Euphoria] songs are love tracks, but this was something different. Here, a pigeon personifies the human, and the cage is a symbol of fear.”

The track explains how social media may be doing more harm than good to the current generation. “Social media needs to be used in a more positive way. While you can spread good news via WhatsApp or Snapchat, you can also start a riot on Facebook or Twitter,” says Dr Sen.
