‘Veere Di Wedding’ has been in news ever since the trailer was released. Promoted as #NotAChickFlick, the movie has received its share of praise and criticism since it has hit the screens. Rhea Kapoor and her gang of ‘veeres’ have tried to bring in a story of four women, something that we haven’t seen in Bollywood for a very long time.

But keeping the trolls tradition alive, some people just can’t digest the fact that women are openly discussing sex, desire, masturbation, and cussing like we do in daily life.

It’s ironic how people who actually talk about these topics on a daily basis and actually even perform it practically are the ones creating an issue about it!

Tweeple are hating Swara Bhaskar, who in the movie is seen masturbating and are tagging her in hate tweets.

A Twitter user actually tweeted to Swara, “Hey @ReallySwara just watched #VeerDiWedding with my grandmother. We got embarrassed when the masturbation scene came on screen. as we came out of the theatre my grandmother said “I’m Hindustan and I am ashamed of #VeerDiWedding (sic).”

Hey @ReallySwara just watched #VeereDiWedding with my grandmother. I saw many sanskari grandmothers telling their sanskari grandchildren to tweet “I’m hindustan and i am ashamed of #VeereDiWedding”.

My chilled out grandmother told me to tweet about this.

— Meghnad (@Memeghnad) June 2, 2018

Well, this makes us wonder what century are we living in. Because this wasn’t the country that wanted to be hush-hush about sex ever. Just to enlighten all the clueless beings, ‘Hindustan’ is actually known as the ‘Land of Kamasutra’, where for generations we have openly spoken about sex and not considered it a taboo.

Maybe the issue isn’t talking about it, this is the simple case of trying to get attention! The tweet is being shared and re-shared. But there are many who are boldly questioning these so-called ‘sanskari’ people!

For some inexplicable reason, there seems to be a tremendous demand for Veere Di Wedding among Indian grandmothers, regardless of their alleged, consistent (word-to-word consistent!) opinion after the film. pic.twitter.com/VCn1wroHlf

For some weird reasons, people who cant spell “Masturbation” are going to watch #VeereDiWedding with their  Grandmothers and want answers from @ReallySwara pic.twitter.com/CAB1ab5b4O

What I failed to understand that Why the f#*” we have to watch every movie with family.from it’s trailers it is quite understood that it’s an adult rom com. Why in the name of God will take ur grandma and pls leave ur judgement at ur doorstep, adult people CAN watch adult comedy

— Bharat B Batham (@bathambbatham) June 3, 2018

Once Hitler took the massive advantage of ‘nationalism’ and did most heinous crime in the history. Asking questions and doing for betterment of country is real desh seva. Ranting about movies and songs on the name of nationalism is only a drama nothing else.

— Shubham Kumar (@iamshubhmKr) June 2, 2018

And Swara decided to give it back shutting themselves once and for all! Kudos girl!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Looks like a certain IT cell sponsored the tickets- or definitely the tweets !!!! 🤦?♀🤦?♀🤦?♀😆😆😆😆 https://t.co/KIUqMoOLRG

— Swara Bhasker (@ReallySwara) June 2, 2018

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 @Joydas you bring so much joy to my Twitter timeline.. I wish paid trolls would at the very least re-arrange the sentences and run a spell check before their paid tweet attacks #PaidTrollsKiPolKhulGayi #SakshiSlays https://t.co/pxHyjKthXH

— Swara Bhasker (@ReallySwara) June 2, 2018

For all the people who are creating an unwanted fiasco, everyone knew it was an adult rom-com flick. Then why did you take your grandmother, if you were so uncomfortable?

The trailer clearly showed what the movie was all about unless you were living under a rock. Because then it is an acute case of lack of common sense, which isn’t common anyway! Before we end this, let’s make it clear that it’s not the film but your thoughts that are embarrassing!

If you thought ‘Veere Di Wedding’ is about modern women who swear, drink, party, have sex on the rocks, you are right. If you thought it’s just that, you are so wrong.

Most men are clueless about what goes on in a woman’s mind, in the powder rooms where they rush together in groups, and on an all-women’s WhatsApp chat group. While men celebrate bromance and pride themselves in putting their bros before everything – a rather unhealthy example of which was ‘Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety’ in which the bromance translates to a deep distrust of women – women, on the other hand, often act as each other’s support systems without spelling it out in too many words.

Director Shashanka Ghosh’s attempt to take us into the world of the urban Indian woman, who is unapologetically herself (or at least tries to be most of the time), is commendable despite its obvious flaws. It’s a film about women, but men feature prominently in the narrative through the female protagonists and that is one reason why this film is not just for female audiences. All you men wanting to understand your women better, give this film a try. There’s more beyond the Hindi ‘gaalis’ and sexy lingerie.

Of course, you have to ignore the blatant chinks in the armour of this #NotAChickFlick. Look beyond the perfect outfits, the extravagant homes and the lavish Thailand holiday (wish we had friends who’d gift us holidays too).

The storyline is simple – 4 friends, 4 romantic plots. All the 4 girls (played by Kareena Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Sonak K Ahuja and Shikha Talsania) are different individuals (trying their best to maintain their individuality in a society trying hard to fit them into the standard roles of mother, daughter, wife and ‘bahu’) with a different set of problems. What’s fresh is their take on the problems.

It comes a lot close to how the modern Indian woman living in a metropolitan city deals with things, if you ignore the fancy clothes and cars, that is (hey, it’s Bollywood). They swear, they drink, they have random one-night stands, they make their own mistakes – the premise of the movie being what Kalindi’s (played by Kareena) mother says about letting her daughter make her own decisions even if they be bad decisions.

That is the film for you in a nutshell – women just want to be, just like men, and make their own decisions whether good or bad. Add to it a desi backdrop of Indian aunties and uncles of West Delhi and South Delhi coming together, and you get a rather entertaining 2 hours 15 minutes.

Talking about performances, Swara Bhasker stands out with her confident portrayal of the girl who gives the society a middle finger, even at the cost of losing her face among the middle-aged aunties hungry for gossip and moral policing. Shikha Talsania too keeps it real, but the character hasn’t been drawn to detail. Kareena shines as the beautiful Kalindi but the performance is lacklustre – Geet in ‘Jab We Met’ was way more realistically portrayed than Kalindi whose diva-esque personality overshadows her lines way too much. Sonam too falls short of matching up to Swara and Shikha as a convincing ‘veera’.

'Veere Di Wedding' Is An Entertaining Watch That's As Much For Men As It's For Women © Balaji Motion Pictures

The movie is not without flaws, of course. Swara Bhasker’s guilt over masturbation seems a tad misplaced and doesn’t fit the otherwise independent character of a woman who parties, drinks and does whatever the fu*k she wants. So does the girls’ reaction to it.  The women’s issues revolve around men, yes, but it is a film about women wanting to sort out their lives through men? No. Despite her guilt, her decision to choose her pleasure over her husband’s is a revolutionary take for Bollywood where the female lead is more often an object of desire rather than a source of it. We have here a champion (albeit a meek one) of the female orgasm, or as she says in the movie, ‘charamsukh’.

Funny, non-preachy, refreshingly modern (we’re so glad they didn’t beep out the abuses and the skin) and very Delhi – the movie is a breath of fresh air for women, and probably a culture shock for the aunties who roll their eyes every time they see their neighbour’s daughter returning from a party at dawn. Which is exactly why you should take your mummies and daddies and brothers to watch this film. If your girlfriend insists you accompany her to watch it, please tag along.

At the music launch of Veere Di Wedding, Kareena Kapoor Khan spoke about the idea of feminism

Kareena Kapoor Khan, who along with co-actors Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania, director Shashanka Ghosh and producers Rhea Kapoor, Nikhil Dwivedi and Ekta Kapoor, launched the music album of Veere Di Wedding, said she is not a feminist and believes in equality.

Asked about the idea of feminism, Kareena Kapoor said, “I believe in equality. I wouldn’t say I am a feminist, I would say I am a woman and above all, I am a human being. I am also as proud to be known as Saif Ali Khan’s wife, as I am to be Kareena Kapoor. So that is just the way I am.”

Veere Di Wedding is a female buddy film about four girls living in an urban setting and their struggles in life. Kareena has always been vocal about her personal life, but in this film, she playing a character which is commitment phobic.

Asked about her role selection criteria, she said, “What made me take up this part is that for me, as a commercial mainstream actor who is always used to work with mainstream actors, be it Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan… For me, it was very different to be part of a film with four girls. The story is something I got completely obsessed by and I thought it was really cool. And I think who better than this entire team to put this film together. This was the reason I wanted to do ‘Veere Di Wedding’. As far as my character Kalindi is concerned, she is really cool and there is a reason why she is commitment phobic, which will be seen in the film.”

Kareena is known for working with A-list actors in Bollywood, but this time she is paired with Sumeet Vyas. On this, she quipped, “I think I have chosen A-Lister heroine this time.”

Sharing her funniest memories from the film’s set, the actress said, “I think it would be throwing Sumeet Vyas off the moon in the film. That was quite funny because I have never done that in my career. I never had the opportunity to throw a hero off from a moon. So thank you everyone, for giving me this chance, I am sure it will go down in history.”

The film will release on June 1, 2018.

In an exclusive interaction with mid-day online, actor Sumeet Vyas, better known for the web show Permanent Roommates, speaks about his upcoming films High Jack and Veere Di Wedding

Sumeet Vyas
Sumeet Vyas

No more only the poster boys of web series, actor Sumeet Vyas has carved a path in mainstream Bollywood films. After giving us some exceptional performances in films like English Vinglish, Parched, Ribbon, amongst others, his upcoming films, High Jack and Veere Di Wedding are geared to hit the 70 mm. Talking about films and his career graph, the actor gets candid with mid-day online in an exclusive interview.

Firstly, tell us about your film, High Jack, it’s termed as a stoner comedy but not everyone would understand what a stoner is?
Here, Highjack is a very trippy film… it’s in my head, a situational comedy, in Akarsh Khurana’s (director) head a thriller, in the editor’s head, an action film and in Nucleya’s head a musical. This freedom of expression is called a stoner comedy.

What attracted you to the film?
It’s the script and is one of the funniest scripts I’ve read in a while. I remember laughing like a crazy person alone in my room while reading it… this doesn’t happen very often. Also the team I was going to work with. Akarsh is like an elder brother to me… Kumud Mishra is a legend on and off the camera. Phantom Films, I was very keen on collaborating with. So yes, this film was the most fun I’ve had at work so far.

Could you please tell us about your character in the film?
My character’s name is Rakesh. He’s a struggling Disc Jockey (DJ), trying to establish himself and find that one big gig, which will change his life. Personally, he’s struggling on the financial front. In desperation, he agrees to do something stupid to get out of this crisis and lands up on a plane that gets high jacked by a bunch of amateurs. So, basically, he’s a mess, a bonafide loser, who resurrects himself in the worst possible situation ever.

Since the film’s backdrop is that of a plane and the funny incidents that take place, are there any real-life incidents wherein, you’ve found something really hilarious on your flight?
Oh yeah, all the time! The first time I travelled business class I couldn’t believe the niceness of the air hostesses, and all through the flight I was nervous they’re going to yell at me and send back to economy (class) where my legs don’t fit. Also, it’s on a flight I realised that I snore sometimes when I’m exhausted because once I woke up and found everyone staring at me. The air hostess was sweet enough to tell me that my snores have destroyed the other flyers’ business class experience.

A piece of advice… if you’re really tired, “Don’t drink and fly.”

Are you happy with the way your career is taking off?
I’m happy that people are appreciating my work. The fact that filmmakers and producers are showing trust in me and are willing to invest in my talent… I must be doing something right. Having said that, I’ll any day swap my career with Ranveer Singh.

After working for Television, web shows, and films, which is the medium that you enjoy doing the most?
See, deep down I want to be the highest paid actor for a certain period at least. So, any medium that manages to do that is the medium I love.

Tell us something about Veere Di Wedding, working with Kareena Kapoor Khan and others?
Veere Di wedding is a fantastic ensemble film. It’s been an honour to work with Shashank Ghosh (film’s director). I’ve always admired his work. Also, Kareena Kapoor is one of the most gifted actors we have in our country. Everyone knows it, I observed it first hand, and when you praise someone like her, you’re stating the obvious.

Also, tell us about your future projects?
Future is very bright. There’s Tripling Season 2 that we’re working on, and some exceptional scripts that are floating in the atmosphere will find my address.

Veere Di Wedding, directed by Shashanka Ghosh, revolves around four friends attending a wedding

Sonam Kapoor with Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan is Sonam Kapoor’s “favourite hero” she has worked with. Sonam and Kareena star together in Veere Di Wedding, which also features Swara Bhaskar and newcomer Shikha Talsania. At the film’s trailer launch here on Wednesday, Sonam was asked that since the film does not have a male lead, what was her experience like.

She said: “My favourite hero I have ever worked with is Kareena Kapoor. I am telling you, it is the easiest thing to work with other women.

“Unfortunately, our conditioning is such that people expect women to pull other women down and compete with each other. But what’s amazing is to actually work towards the same goal and create the best possible version of something. If all girls come together, they can literally move the world.”

When asked why haven’t there been enough films about female bonding, other than “Aisha” which also starred Sonam, the actress said: “‘Aisha’ wasn’t a friendship film. It was a film about a girl and her friends. But this film is an ensemble film that is about each girl’s journey. Each of us has an equally important story to tell.

“Of course, the story is about one of the friends getting married and it is from her perspective.

“It is a story about friendship, about girls… And I don’t think such a film has been made before where it is entertaining, it is fun, it has got romance, dance and drama. It has got everything. Why can’t women headline a female commercial film which has a story about girls?

“Hopefully, with everyone’s support, I think this will bring about a change in the kind of films which are made and the kind of roles written for us.”

Veere Di Wedding, directed by Shashanka Ghosh, revolves around four friends attending a wedding. Presented by Balaji Motion Pictures, Anil Kapoor Films and Communication Network and Saffron Broadcast and Media Ltd, the film is scheduled to release on June 1.

The much-awaited trailer of ‘Veere Di Wedding’ is finally out. Nope, we are not talking about the movie with the same name and the forever lonely Jimmy Shergill. We are talking about the movie featuring the stylish and gorgeous ‘veeres’, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania.

Check Out The Amazing Trailer Of 'Veere Di Wedding'Balaji telefilms

For the world, this video is probably a recipe for one of the most successful movies of this year. But for me it was basically a 2 minute 49 seconds long detailed documentary on childhood friendship, relationship, and wedding jitters; coupled with wedding dance, sophisticatedly-given ‘gaalis’ and crazy numbers to shake a leg on.

Check Out The Amazing Trailer Of 'Veere Di Wedding'Balaji Telefilms

In fact, for those who are ardent fans of Indian web-series, it will also look like a TVF reunion with Mikesh aka Sumeet Vyas from ‘Permanent Roommates’ and will definitely remind you guys of ‘The Trip’ featuring 4 female friends having a time of their lives.

The trailer talks about the most basic problem, or should we say, ‘solution’ to anything and everything under the sun, according to the Indian parents – wedding. Our homie Mikesh aka Sumeet Vyas proposes to Kareena Kapoor Khan in the most un-romantic way possible, but turns sucessful in the first attempt itself as the next scene cuts to their big fat wedding. What follows next is the roller-coaster ride of funny, emotional and twisted situations that almost all of us can relate to. Also, our lovebirds sitting on a half-moon is legit the best wedding-fail so far and the most hilarious one too.

Check out the trailer here:

With weddings being the primary theme for most movies this year, this Shashanka Ghosh directorial looks like a breath of fresh air, thanks to the relatable storyline and kickass acting. ‘Veere Di Wedding’ will hit the theatres on June 1.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor will be seen on screen for the first time. However, it will be Kareena’s first film post her pregnancy. Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, Veere Di Wedding also stars Swara Bhaskar, Shikha Talsania and Sumeet Vyas in pivotal roles.

A source revealed to the daily, “The theatrical promo for VDW will be launched on April 19. Unlike most others, this won’t be just a digital launch, but the actors will be unveiling the trailer with a press conference.” Now, the trailer is finally going to come out next week and according to a leading daily, the date set is April 19, 2018.

A few months back while the makers had revealed the poster it got all the more excited for their fans y seeing the quirky posters and now the excitement for the trailer seems like won’t settle down for a while.

Kareena Kapoor Khan says her journey in the film industry has been enriching and she would like to work another two decades in Bollywood

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan, who is looking her best self nowadays after shedding all the extra weight after the birth of her son Taimur, says her journey in the film industry has been enriching and she would like to work another two decades in Bollywood. “It’s been honorable and I would say enriching. It has been 18 years and still counting. I hope to work for another two decades,” Kareena told IANS in an interview.

Kareena, who made her acting debut in 2000 with Refugee, has many successful films like Jab We Met, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Talaash: The Hunt Begins…, Yuva, Omkara and Udta Punjab, to her credit. And she is also considered one of the most flawless beauties in Bollywood. After embracing motherhoood with the birth of Taimur with husband Saif Ali Khan in December 2016, Kareena is now geared up for Shashanka Ghosh’s Veere Di Wedding, a romantic comedy co-starring Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania.

The actress says she is excited about the film. “It comes on June 1 and it is a summer watch. It is an exciting story about four friends. Also, there are two female producers onboard and that is also exciting. It’s a different time in the industry as people are watching more women-centric films. This is a lot more fun and nothing serious. Hopefully, people will enjoy it,” said Kareena.

With so many female faces in one film, was there any catfight? “That is just a myth. We all are friends. Rhea (Kapoor) is a very good friend of mine. The whole idea of the film was to show the story of four friends. It was so much fun and inspiring and even the film was shot with a lot of fun,” said Kareena. The actress walked the runway as grand finale showstopper for designer Anamika Khanna at Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Summer/ Resort 2018 on Sunday.

Kareena said she is a fan of the designer’s clothes. “Even in this range, she has outdone herself,” said the actress, who is considered a fashion diva, who makes style statements on and off the screen. “For me, it was never about what I am wearing or what I am going to wear. I never thought about it. I wear what I am comfortable in and I think if a person is comfortable in what they wear, he or she looks super stylish.”

The Lakme Absolute Grand Finale brought together the best of Khanna’s contemporary designs interspersed with the diverse nude palette that Lakme has come up with.
