No more only the poster boys of web series, actor Sumeet Vyas has carved a path in mainstream Bollywood films. After giving us some exceptional performances in films like English Vinglish, Parched, Ribbon, amongst others, his upcoming films, High Jack and Veere Di Wedding are geared to hit the 70 mm. Talking about films and his career graph, the actor gets candid with mid-day online in an exclusive interview.

Firstly, tell us about your film, High Jack, it’s termed as a stoner comedy but not everyone would understand what a stoner is?
Here, Highjack is a very trippy film… it’s in my head, a situational comedy, in Akarsh Khurana’s (director) head a thriller, in the editor’s head, an action film and in Nucleya’s head a musical. This freedom of expression is called a stoner comedy.

What attracted you to the film?
It’s the script and is one of the funniest scripts I’ve read in a while. I remember laughing like a crazy person alone in my room while reading it… this doesn’t happen very often. Also the team I was going to work with. Akarsh is like an elder brother to me… Kumud Mishra is a legend on and off the camera. Phantom Films, I was very keen on collaborating with. So yes, this film was the most fun I’ve had at work so far.

Could you please tell us about your character in the film?
My character’s name is Rakesh. He’s a struggling Disc Jockey (DJ), trying to establish himself and find that one big gig, which will change his life. Personally, he’s struggling on the financial front. In desperation, he agrees to do something stupid to get out of this crisis and lands up on a plane that gets high jacked by a bunch of amateurs. So, basically, he’s a mess, a bonafide loser, who resurrects himself in the worst possible situation ever.

Since the film’s backdrop is that of a plane and the funny incidents that take place, are there any real-life incidents wherein, you’ve found something really hilarious on your flight?
Oh yeah, all the time! The first time I travelled business class I couldn’t believe the niceness of the air hostesses, and all through the flight I was nervous they’re going to yell at me and send back to economy (class) where my legs don’t fit. Also, it’s on a flight I realised that I snore sometimes when I’m exhausted because once I woke up and found everyone staring at me. The air hostess was sweet enough to tell me that my snores have destroyed the other flyers’ business class experience.

A piece of advice… if you’re really tired, “Don’t drink and fly.”

Are you happy with the way your career is taking off?
I’m happy that people are appreciating my work. The fact that filmmakers and producers are showing trust in me and are willing to invest in my talent… I must be doing something right. Having said that, I’ll any day swap my career with Ranveer Singh.

After working for Television, web shows, and films, which is the medium that you enjoy doing the most?
See, deep down I want to be the highest paid actor for a certain period at least. So, any medium that manages to do that is the medium I love.

Tell us something about Veere Di Wedding, working with Kareena Kapoor Khan and others?
Veere Di wedding is a fantastic ensemble film. It’s been an honour to work with Shashank Ghosh (film’s director). I’ve always admired his work. Also, Kareena Kapoor is one of the most gifted actors we have in our country. Everyone knows it, I observed it first hand, and when you praise someone like her, you’re stating the obvious.

Also, tell us about your future projects?
Future is very bright. There’s Tripling Season 2 that we’re working on, and some exceptional scripts that are floating in the atmosphere will find my address.

Actor Sumeet Vyas, who will soon be seen in upcoming web series “Official CEOgiri”, says he does not believe in distinguishing between the digital platform and the silver screens

Actor Sumeet Vyas, who will soon be seen in upcoming web series “Official CEOgiri”, says he does not believe in distinguishing between the digital platform and the silver screen.

“I personally, as an actor, don’t see any difference at all. The effort, which I need to put in a film, is the same effort I put in for any other medium. The difference is the medium through which the story is getting told and that’s it,” the actor, who also appeared in films like “English Vinglish”, “Parched”, “Ribbon”, told IANS here.

“As an actor, you don’t really think if it is a film or a web series you are acting for. You just act and give your 100 per cent.”

“Yeah, maybe the food is slightly better on film sets,” quipped the actor, who will soon be seen in Sonam Kapoor-starrer “Veere Di Wedding”.

“Official CEOgiri” is the second season of the popular web-series “Official Chukyagiri”. The show started in 2016 where the world of the show was presented through the perspective of Spandan Chukya, a hopeful intern from a small town, who has come to Mumbai hoping to make it in the city of dreams.

After the success of its first season, the digital platform Arre is coming back with the new season of the show where the plot revolves around an elusive CEO of the office named D, essayed by Sumeet.

“I am particularly excited about playing a character like D – someone who is deeply flawed and emotionally complex but also charming and suave. I look forward to the challenge ahead and can’t wait to see how it all turns out,” said Sumeet.

“In the second season I shot for 10 days, it was a great shoot with a great team,” he added.

The new series also features Aahana Kumra, Gopal Dutt, Sunny Kaushal, and Anand Tiwari along with by Eisha Chopra and Pranay Manchanda.

The show will be available for viewing on Arre app and it’s all the social media platform and its official website from the second week of February.

SRKActress Kalki Koechlin says she wishes to work on screen with all the Khans of Bollywood, but she has a softer corner for Shah Rukh Khan.

Asked if she wants to work with any of the top Khans of the industry, Kalki told IANS: “I want to work with all three Khans, but if you ask me my favourite, it has to be Shah Rukh.

“Shah Rukh is my childhood crush. I met him few times in real life as well and he is very charming.”

When it comes to a new bunch of actors, she thinks she “will look nice” with Ranbir Kapoor.

“We worked in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and I really liked him as co-star. He is a natural actor and spontaneous. It would be interesting to work with him,” she added.

The actress is trying to balance her career between mainstream and indie films by working with directors like Zoya Akhtar and Ayan Mukerji in films like “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”, along with movies like “Margarita, With a Straw” and “A Death in the Gunj” which were popular in festival circuits.

Sharing her wish-list of directors, Kalki said: “I would like to work with an artist like Vishal Bhardwaj. His cinema is a piece of art, he writes the story, he makes the music of the film and it’s amazing. I think it would be interesting to work with Vikramaditya Motwane as well.”

Currently, Kalki is looking forward to her upcoming film “Ribbon”, also featuring Sumeet Vyas. It is releasing on November 3.

Sumeet VyasSumeet Vyas

At a time when Indian video-streaming portals began to gain popularity among the masses, Permanent Roommates actor Sumeet Vyas was touted as the Shah Rukh Khan of the web world. Three years after making his acting debut on the web, Vyas will feature in the Bollywood film, Veerey Di Wedding, which sees him in the role of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s love interest.

Vyas admits that at the time, he wasn’t aware of who he was auditioning for, but inferred it involved big names, given the privacy the studio maintained during the screening process. “When I got a call for the audition, neither the co-stars nor the production house was named. I guessed that it would involve big names, because, in smaller projects, details are often revealed,” he laughs.

A long wait following the audition led him to believe his selection stood on flimsy grounds, but Vyas admits that the day he got the call was a special one. “From not having an idea about who the director was, to learning that it was such a huge film with big stars was a relief. I said, ‘Okay, I have made it.'”

Vyas, who is currently shooting for the web adventure show, Stupid Man Smart Phone, has dabbled in theatre and TV, previously featured in small roles in English Vinglish (2012), Guddu Ki Gun (2015) and Parched (2015). Veerey Di Wedding is a big-ticket outing, but the actor is unfazed by the scale. “As an actor, you move from one project to another, hoping your last fetches you the next. I avoid putting too much burden on one project. You do your best and stay excited about every project; if it turns out to be big, well and good. Then, say, thank you,” he says, adding that he has already met director Shashanka Ghosh and co-star Swara Bhaskar to discuss the film.
