In case you didn’t know, today is ‘Star Wars’ day and if you see various posts on social media with “May The 4th Be With You” don’t get too alarmed. The ‘Star Wars’ franchise is the first film that became a part of the modern pop culture and is probably the most valuable franchise in the world at the moment —Yes, it beats the entire MCU as well.

May 4th is celebrated as ‘Star Wars’ day all over the world and it has nothing to do with the release of the original film in 1977. The movie has a popular phrase, “May the Force be with you” which is used by wise Jedis to wish luck for their companions. Fans obviously use a little wordplay and ever since then ‘May the Fourth be with you’ has been synonyms with the franchise.

So in order to celebrate this special day, we decided to compile some interesting facts about the franchise you probably aren’t aware of:

1. The franchise has the most successful toy line ever where over 250 million action figures have been sold between 1978 and 1986. Since then, you can only imagine how many action figures the franchise has managed to sell thanks to the new movies.

If you are a ‘Star Wars’ fan then you must have marked your calendar for December 15 this year as the ‘The Last Jedi’ is all set to hit the theatres. The trailer managed to set our hearts racing and we thought ‘What could be better than the fact that we get to watch such a stunning piece of cinema?’

It turns out that the only thing better than one Star Wars film is in fact, three more Star Wars films.

Disney and Lucasfilm have made our day (or year perhaps?) by making one hell of an announcement. They revealed their plans for making a brand new Star Wars trilogy with none other than Rian Johnson, the director of ‘The Last Jedi.’ He is going to write and direct the first of the three films and will have ace producer Ram Bergman behind the production wheel.

But it doesn’t end here. The new trilogy will be set in a different part of the universe and we will get to see new characters exploring never-seen-before parts of the world.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

This essentially means that the new films can be steered in any direction and we cannot be more excited.

But if you thought that the surprise ends here, think again. It was also announced that a live-action Star Wars TV series is in the works and will be aired on Disney’s streaming service. However, this is not going to happen anytime soon.  Disney is planning to pull all of its content from other streaming platforms like Netflix before it is made available exclusively on Disney’s service, which will be launched somewhere in 2019.

However, the team made sure that they do not reveal anything else about this new venture of theirs in the very carefully worded press release on the official website of Star Wars. And that unfortunately means that no information about when this would go on floors has been provided.

Since no revelations have been made in this announcement, we can only sit and imagine which part of the galaxy will the new movies take us. The possibilities are endless and honestly, if more information isn’t provided soon, the uncertainty will definitely get the better of us.

Creating a successful and entertaining movie is hard enough work as it is, so naturally the pressure of creating a perfect sequel is pretty Herculean. Moreover, the risk of failure is more, as the audience always intends to see something greater than the previous versions of the film. However, in these times, if a movie is commercially successful, the team starts working for the newer more exciting sequel without any delay.

Over the years, movie franchises have earned over billions of dollars, all because they succeeded in creating a dedicated fan following. Here we throw light on some of the most memorable and successful movie series we have always loved watching on repeat.

1. The Dark Knight Trilogy

2. The Godfather
