Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar and filmmaker Karan Johar have come out in support of Sanjay Leela Bhansali as he faces trouble ahead of the release of his magnum opus “Padmavati”, saying films are just a mode of expression and they should not be misinterpreted as history.

'Padmavati' receives support amidst controversyDeepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor in their upcoming movie “Padmavati”

Various groups, most of them from the Rajput community, have accused Bhansali of “distorting” historical facts in the film which features Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. During a session at Sahitya Aaj Tak, Akhtar was asked about the controversy surrounding the movie, and the lyricist said, “I was listening to a history professor on TV who said that there is a difference of 200-250 years between Khilji’s rule and the writing of ‘Padmavat’. There was no mention of Padmavati before Malik Muhammad Jayasi wrote the ‘Padmavat’.

“A lot of history has been written about that time. There are a lot of records available of that time but there is no mention of Padmavati in them.” Citing the example of Ashutosh Gowariker’s “Jodha Akbar”, Akhtar said as per the history Akbar never had a wife by the name of Jodha Bai and people should not confuse a work of fiction with history.

“Stories get created. Don’t misinterpret films for history and history for films. You watch cinema and enjoy it. If you are interested in history, then read it seriously,” he added. Johar, whose last directorial venture “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Imran Abbas, had a hard time in getting a smooth release, was also present at the event.

The filmmaker said he respects Bhansali’s vision and the fact that his “beautiful film” is caught up in the controversy makes him feel bad. “I have faced a lot of controversies before the release of a film. I feel bad for a filmmaker, who is one of the best in the country. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has made a beautiful film and I hope he is protected by the people who understand that creativity is a form of expression.

“He has himself said that he has made a film which is true to the story and there is nothing in it that might hurt the sentiments and sensibilities of people. I think we should trust and believe him and give this film all the love,” Johar said. “Padmavati”, which is scheduled to release on December 1 has been facing a lot of trouble since early this year. Bhansali was assaulted by activists of a Rajput community group, Karni Sena, while shooting in Jaipur.

The group has been constantly seeking ban on the release of the film, which they claim is distorting the history. Yesterday, hundreds of people associated with various community organisations also took out a march in Thane demanding a ban on the film. Bhansali had earlier said that the film is his tribute to the “sacrifice, valour and honour” of Rani Padmavati. He has also said there is nothing in the film that will hurt anyone’s sentiments and sensibilities.

Amidst receiving so much hate and opposition from the Rajput wings to impose a ban on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical piece, ‘Padmavati’, the makers of the film have gone ahead and released an epic love ballad between Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The song, ‘Ek Dil Ek Jaan’ describes the relationship between Rani Padmini and Maharawal Ratan Singh, essayed by Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor respectively.

The song’s exquisite illustrations make it for a beautiful visual treat. Unlike, any other Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, ‘Padmavati’ too has its regal touch. The song also shows how Rani Padmini is Maharwal Ratan Singh’s strength and from being at peace at home to preparing for a war, she is always standing like a strong pillar beside him.

The music of the song has been composed by filmmaker-music director, Bhansali, himself. Shivam Pathak’s soothing voice makes it for a delightful hear. Lyrics are penned by AM Turaz. This is Shahid and Deepika’s maiden film together and after watching their chemistry, we believe, this film is definitely a treat for their fans. Talking about the song to mid-day, Deepika Padukone told, “Shahid and I have known each other for so many years, but a special film like Padmavati brought us together onscreen”.

Padukone thinks Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh is the perfect hero to Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji. “His contribution to this film is irreplaceable. It was important to have a good actor, with a strong screen presence and massive popularity to add to this film. Shahid brought that with him.”

In order to make certain that the nuances of the characters in Padmavati, specifically Alauddin Khilji and Raja Rawal Ratan Singh, are reflected in their attire, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has hired the services of a brand which is co-owned by artist Vipul Amar and psychologist Harsheen Arora.

Arora has been looking into the detailing of the costumes created for the final war sequence between Khilji and Ratan Singh. “Ratan Singh was noble and honourable, Khilji believed in invasion and power. So, their attires need to reflect it,” says Arora. She adds that colours play a pivotal role in depicting different personalities.

“The colours used for Shahid’s armour are red and gold. Red depicts honour and an eagerness to serve one’s land. Gold represents courage, generosity and passion. His chest plate is made of sculpted vintage leather and is infused with metal. In the lower half of the armour, we have used geometric patterns in leather. Rajputs preferred geometric designs over floral.” As for Khilji, Arora says the depiction of lions in his armour are “to enhance the darkness of the character”.

“Khilji is unfazed. Imagine the kind of power he possesses if he can tame two lions and place them on his shoulders,” she says, alluding to a sequence in the film. Designer Vipul Amar says the team consulted an engineer to ascertain that there was mobility in the armours. “It was imperative that the actors be able to perform stunts while wearing them.”

The first song of ‘Padmavati’, ‘Ghoomar’ is out and it is full of grandiose. The song is set in a royal palace, where ‘Padmavati’ is performing the traditional folk dance of Rajasthan along with several other women. Shahid Kapoor, looks royal as Maharawal Ratan Singh, but is is Deepika who is winning hearts. Deepika looks ethereal as ‘Rani Padmavati’ and has mastered the ‘Ghoomar’ dance to the t.  Sanjay Leela Bhansali has paid attention to even minute details, ‘Ghoomar’ showcases the grandeur and exquisite culture of the ‘Rajputs’.

Deepika, is wearing the traditional ghaghra choli and is seen twirling several times in the dance sequence. ‘Ghoomar’ is considered one of the most difficult dance forms to master, knowing how the twirling and the footwork has to be in sync. But, Deepika has pulled off the dance with a lot of poise, elan and grace. The song has been sung by Shreya Ghoshal, who has added an angelic and earthy feel to it.

Deepika Padukone has tweeted how ‘Ghoomar’ was the most difficult, yet fulfilling song sequences she performed in her career.

The Ghoomar Song has to be one of the most difficult yet most fulfilling song sequences i have ever shot for! #GhoomarToday@FilmPadmavati

— Deepika Padukone (@deepikapadukone) October 25, 2017

For those who don’t know, ‘Ghoomar’ is the traditional folk dance and a part of the heritage of Rajasthan. Just like ‘Bajirao Mastani’ showed Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone in a ‘laavni’ face-off ‘Pinga’, ‘Padmavati’ will have ‘Ghoomar’ as their traditional dance sequence.

A traditional dance form of Rajput women, the routine involves twirling in circles, leaving the onlookers enchanted and mesmerized by the beautiful dance performance. An extremely difficult performance art that takes years to learn, Deepika had to pick up the steps within a matter of days. With myriad of gracefulness and a royal poise, the song was shot keeping true to the traditional Rajputana folk dance form.

Sources reveal that Deepika did over 66 twirls while shooting for the song. Adding to the difficult dance form that includes twists and twirls, Deepika had to do the dance in an extravagant costume and adorned in heavy jewelry, which is a feat in itself.

Commenting on Ghoomar, Deepika said, “The Ghoomar Song has been one of the most difficult song sequences that Sanjay Sir and I have shot for. His vision can be seen in the grandiose of the set and the immense hard work we’ve all put into making it. I had started preparing for this film and character for several months before we actually started filming. But it was for The Ghoomar Song that I walked onto set as ‘Padmavati’ for the very first time. The shooting of Padmavati began with ‘The Ghoomar Song’ and I will never forget that day. I remember approaching my mark for the first shot and suddenly I felt a chill run through my body. It was almost as if Padmavati‘s soul had entered my body. That feeling still lingers and will continue for years to come”.

When you combine some of the best actors of the millennial generation like Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor with ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, hearts start racing because one doesn’t expect anything less than a miracle. The amount of buzz that ‘Padmavati’ has created months before its release and for that matter, months before even its trailer was released, is not something that happens with every Bollywood film. Controversies and stunning posters showcasing the looks of the characters acted as the cherry on top of the cake.

Putting an end to the misery of fans, the team finally announced that the trailer of Padmavati will be released at 1.03pm today. From Deepika Padukone, to Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh–the film’s lead stars tweeted, “#PadmavatiTrailer arrives today at 13:03. Stay tuned! @FilmPadmavati.”

You must be wondering why 1:03 p.m. to be exact.

The significance of the time of the release of the trailer is believed to be the first fight between Maharawal Ratan Singh and Sultan Alauddin Khilji. The battle was fought in 1303 AD for the very first time. Deepika Padukone is seen playing the role of Rani Padmini of Chittor, while Shahid Kapoor features in the role of her husband Rawal Ratan Singh. And Ranveer Singh is playing the role of the menacing Alauddin Khilji. The expectations were riding really high and without a doubt, they were exceeded. The trailer which unexpectedly focuses a little more on Shahid and Ranveer’s characters is breathtaking, to say the least.

Stunning and picturesque sets, subtle yet noteworthy chemistry between Deepika and Shahid and Ranveer’s intense and dark AF character along with the excellent cinematography- our hearts definitely skipped a beat. Have a look for yourself:

Deepika is her regal self, Shahid surely justifies the look of the royal ‘Rajput’, but it is the narcissism of Ranveer as the ravenous Khilji that takes the cake. The film is all set to hit the silver screen on December 1, 2017 and the fans and movie buffs can’t wait to watch this epic film.

Padmavati marks Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s third collaboration with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali after Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani.

Last month, Padmavati posters featuring Deepika as Rani Padmini were burnt by an outfit of the Rajput community Shri Rajput Karni Sena outside Rajmandir Cinema Hall in Jaipur in protest, reported news agency IANS.

The outfit claimed that Sanjay Leela Bhansali promised to the have the movie cleared by them first but had not followed up. “While shooting in Jaipur Bhansali had promised to show the film to us and historians before releasing it. But since then no one has contacted us, nor has the film been shown to us,” said Narain Singh Divrala, the district president of Karni Sena, reported IANS.

Padmavati will release in theatres on December 1.

ranveerJust when you thought Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor did complete justice to their looks as Rani Padmavati and Maharawal Ratan Singh respectively, you have Ranveer Singh leaving you awestruck with his Alauddin Khilji avatar. Ranveer’s much-awaited look as Khilji for ‘Padmavati’ is finally out and it’s everything the audience was expecting and much more. Two posters have been released to introduce the character of Sultan Alauddin Khilji. With the battle scar on the face coupled with the densely-kohled malevolent eyes and long mane- Ranveer looks every bit the antagonistic Alauddin Khilji that he is to portray in the film. ‘Padmavati’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is slated to release on December 1, 2017.

When it comes to engaging with fans, Shahid Kapoor is one of the few actors who is always updating his fans with his upcoming films, projects. He also gives a sneak-peak into his life. Shahid spoke to his fans about Mira saying, “She was shocked to know how much you guys are aware of.” Interestingly, Shahid is seen asking Mira to join him during the chat. Mira, after waving cutely, joined her hubby for the chat. She said, “Hi Shanatics (Shahid fans), I don’t have to be introduced to them. They have such an overwhelming presence on social media. I think you love him more than I do (and the cute expression Shahid gives to Mira, will want you to fall in love)” Later, Mira shared Navratri wishes with Shahid’s fans. There’s a reason we are calling the conversation cute. Watch it for yourself to believe.

There are certain movies which gain attention after their release, while there are some that enjoy an unparalleled attention even during the nascent stages of its making, thanks to the innumerable controversies attached to it. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming project ‘Padmavati’ fall in the latter category, after we saw the film’s sets being vandalized and posters and banners being burnt in retaliation against the movie. However, all these controversies couldn’t deter Bhansali from moving ahead with his magnum-opus period drama and despite several delays and protests, we finally got to see the first look of goddess queen Rani Padmini.

While we were still dumbfounded over Deepika’s regal look and the beauty she is, Bhansali dropped another bomb on us, which will take really long to recuperate from. Hold your breath guys, as Maharawal Ratan Singh aka Shahid Kapoor’s look from the movie is here. Yes, the first look was released today and the ‘Udta Punjab’ actor is looking every bit fierce and dangerously handsome as the King of Chittor and Rani Padmini’s husband.

With a heavy beard, bloodstained torn clothes and the scar on face from a battle, Shahid is raising the hotness bar with this fierce aura. In another tweet, Shahid Kapoor wrote “Maharawal Ratan Singh, saahas, saamarthya aur sammaan ka prateek.” In fact, talking about his look Shahid reportedly said, “When you are playing a King, you need to have a certain personality. At that time, the people used to not be very skinny and lean, so you need to have a manly personality. Basically for that, and to carry those outfits also, Sanjay sir wants me to be a little muscular and a little full. But I will be gaining weight in terms of muscle and not in terms of fat. This is because I am playing the character of a warrior. The Rajput kings had very strong personalities.” Well, now that the look is out, we don’t think there could have been a better choice than Shahid.

This movie is said to be the first collaboration between Shahid Kapoor and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, as Deepika and Ranveer have already worked with him in ‘Bajirao Mastani’.
