The latest buzzword in the Indian film industry is nepotism. Nepotism refers to the practise of appointing relatives and friends in one’s organisations to positions for which outsiders might be better qualified. While you must be thinking that this term should have no connection to Bollywood, well, you are highly mistaken.

When Kangana Ranaut accused Karan Johar of promoting nepotism on his show, ‘Koffee With Karan’, it sparked off a debate in the film industry and there were divided opinions on it. While some people sided with Kangana, a huge number of them also sided with Karan Johar when he accused Kangana of playing the victim card.

While there are many examples of ordinary people who have become stars on their own accord (read: Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra); there are an equally large number of people who had the right backing at the right time and they became stars.

Here we have for you just a few examples which go on to prove that Bollywood is in fact, a huge flag-bearer of nepotism.

1. Arjun Kapoor

Arjun Kapoor© Instagram

Son of famous film producer, Boney Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor was an overweight adult when he was first spotted by YRF. He was then asked to lose weight if he wanted to start a career in films. And that is what he did. He went on to lose all his weight and become incredibly fit before he started shooting his debut film, ‘Ishaqzaade’. While this film did well and was praised by fans and critics alike, his subsequent films did not do so well. But, he is still seen as the face of many films and his filmography boasts of having worked with some of the biggest names in the film industry.

2. Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt© Instagram

Daughter of producer Mahesh Bhatt and actor Soni Razdan, Alia Bhatt too, was an overweight adult. She was launched by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions in their film, ‘Student Of The Year’, along with Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. While she has managed to make a mark with her acting skills, the fact still exists that she was given a chance to debut with a huge banner film because of nepotism. All the three, Alia, Varun, and Sidharth are still considered to be Karan’s “children” who he has mentored and are very dear to him. Alia Bhatt is perhaps the only actor who has proven her mettle by doing a wide niche of films like ‘Udta Punjab’, ‘Highway’, and ‘Dear Zindagi’.

3. Athiya Shetty

Athiya Shetty© Instagram

She is the daughter of famous actor, Suniel Shetty and she made her debut with the Nikhil Advani directed ‘Hero’ in 2015 along with Sooraj Pancholi. The film was produced by Salman Khan and Subhash Ghai. The film flopped miserably, but their careers didn’t as they were launched by Salman Khan and he has made sure to give them the right kind of exposure this time.

4. Emraan Hashmi

Emraan Hashmi© Instagram

Mahesh Bhatt is his uncle and Emraan Hashmi was one of the few actors who came out and agreed to the fact that nepotism does exist in Bollywood. He, in an interview said, “Yes, nepotism exists in our industry, and I got a break because of it. If my uncle [Mahesh Bhatt], who is a producer and director hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t have been an actor.” His initial films earned him the tag of a ‘serial kisser’ and till today, he hasn’t shied away from that image.

5. Shraddha Kapoor

Shraddha Kapoor© Instagram

She is the daughter of the famous comic-villain Shakti Kapoor; and Shraddha Kapoor got a break in movies because of this tag. While she is extremely beautiful, her acting skills are next to zero. Almost all her films have failed miserably, but that hasn’t stopped her from getting film projects. She was last seen in Mohit Suri’s ‘Half Girlfriend’, which was based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name and needless to say, the film fared poorly in the box office. While her debut film, ‘Aashiqui 2′ did do decent business at the box office, all her other films have flopped.

6. Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha© Instagram

Daughter of Shotgun aka Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam Sinha, Sonakshi Sinha made her debut opposite Salman Khan in the hit film franchise, ‘Dabangg’. While that film did huge business because of the presence of Salman Khan, Sonakshi’s career was boosted because of that. But, just like with other star kids, she has failed to leave an impression in Bollywood. Her films have tanked at the box office and only a few of her films like ‘Lootera’ and the ‘Dabangg’ series have managed to shine. She is landing a ton of lead roles in many movies and her career seems to be flourishing.

7. Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor© Instagram

Daughter of jhakkaas actors, Anil and Sunita Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor too was an overweight adult. When she lost weight, she was offered Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saawariya’ alongside another debutant in Ranbir Kapoor. The film tanked miserably at the box office, but that didn’t stop Sonam Kapoor from getting lead roles in various films. Almost all her films have failed to make their mark at the box office, barring her latest release, ‘Neerja’, which was directed by Ram Madhvani. She was even publically called out by one of her co-stars, Abhay Deol for the movie ‘Aisha’ where he said that the film had more to do with clothes than acting.

8. Tiger Shroff

Tiger Shroff© Instagram

He is the son of Jackie Shroff and is known more for his controversial sexist statements rather than for his acting. When he debuted with the film, ‘Heropanti’ alongside actor Kriti Sanon, it failed to leave an impression on the audience. While Kriti had a tough time getting good roles after that, Tiger’s career seems to have taken off with him getting lead roles in multiple movies. It’s another story that those films do not do well at the box office.

9. Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan© Instagram

He is the son of famous producer David Dhawan and was launched in Bollywood through Karan Johar’s ‘Student Of The Year’. He has managed to prove his acting capabilities and is a huge star with quite a female fan following. A few of his films have done well, but he is still a product of nepotism, and this fact cannot be denied by anyone.

Still think nepotism doesn’t exist in Bollywood? Well, it’s time to re-think that idea!

Angad Bedi and Salman KhanAngad Bedi and Salman Khan

Like it did for its three lead protagonists, Shoojit Sircar’s critically-acclaimed film Pink (2016) also gave a boost to Angad Bedi’s acting career. Bedi, who played the antagonist in the Taapsee Pannu-starrer, is now set to feature alongside Salman Khan in the latter’s sequel to his 2012 actioner, Ek Tha Tiger.

Essaying the part of a RAW agent is demanding, given that it requires the actor to whip himself in shape, but Bedi says the experience is one he cherishes. Chronicling his training routine, he tells mid-day, “Besides working out for nearly six hours a day, I am also learning different forms of martial arts. I trained in kickboxing and Muay Thai. The hand-to-hand combat fight sequences are challenging to pull off. RAW agents are physically strong, so, I had to work on achieving strength, as well as their agility.”

Apart from enhancing his fitness, the actor also learnt how think like a RAW agent. “I had to study the manner in which they think. They have a strong sense of purpose and are sharp.”

Bedi has already wrapped up a 25-day schedule and will jet off to Abu Dhabi for another 45-day plan by the end of this month. It is during this schedule that the action sequences will be canned. The actor speaks about teaming up with Khan with earnest excitement.

“Shooting with Salman bhai has been special. He is a great man and loving colleague. If he likes you, he takes you under his wing. I am loving being pampered. I love the stories he has to tell, the anecdotes he shares from his experience. His learning from his 25-year-long career are worth listening to. It gives you a deep insight into the industry, its ways and how it has evolved.”

Rajkumar-santoshiOne sequel that has been waited patiently is that of Rajkumar Santoshi’s 1994 cult classic – ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. And recently the director confirmed that the sequel to this classic comedy is in offing, however it wouldn’t star Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, who played the central characters – Amar and Prem – in the film.

Talking about his plans for about taking this comedy franchise forward, Santoshi revealed to a daily, “I want to make a worthy successor. What other filmmakers do is en-cash on a successful film’s title, whether there is a story or not. I can’t cheat people with the title. The day I’m satisfied with the subject being the worthy successor, I will get on the floor with the movie.”

Regarding the casting, the director said, “It’s very difficult (to cast Salman and Aamir). For humour, you need innocence. That time, these actors had the innocence. Now, it will look forced. It looks cute if a 20-year-old is chasing a girl. A 45-50-year-old man chasing young girls looks vulgar.”

He further added that he might look at casting younger actors, “There is Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan… They are all promising actors and they have the knack for comedy. I will pick up good talent for the film.”

We can’t imagine ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ sequel without these two Khans, can you?

“Yeh Rat Aur Yeh Duri, Tera Milana Hai Jaruri…..Kee Dil Mera…..Kee Dil Mera Dhak Dhak Dole, Diwana Liye Jayey Hichakole,” is there anyone who doesn't remember these lyrics? Anyone? Well, if you haven't….you have seriously missed something really big in your life.

It's common knowledge that this popular sing is from 90s classic 'Andaz Apna Apna'. It is one of those rare films which also starred Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Shakti Kapoor and Mehmood that tanked at the box office but later got the status of a cult film. Well, we couldn't agree more, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan's camaraderie was so perfect, that you watch this film once and you can never get over it.

'Andaz Apna Apna' Sequel Won't Be The Same Without Aamir & Salman

This film will always hold a special place in our hearts because of its cracking humour. Lately, there are reports going around about the sequel of the film and we all know that anyone who has seen this film would love to see the original cast taking the franchise forward.

Wouldn't you agree that recreating this film with the new cast would be an ultimate sin? Looks like the people in 1994 were far more intelligent to realise the importance of what that cast gave us than the maker himself.

A recent report in DNA claims that Rajkumar Santoshi has given a heads up for the sequel but neither of the Khans will be seen in the film. And the news itself breaks our heart into million pieces. Like how…..how on Earth could he even say so?

“For humor, you need innocence. That time, these actors had the innocence. Now, it will look forced. It looks cute if a 20-year-old is chasing a girl. A 45-50-year-old man chasing young girls looks vulgar,” said the maker in the report.

'Andaz Apna Apna' Sequel Won't Be The Same Without Aamir & Salman

He also hinted that young actors will be seen in the film. “There is Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan… They are all promising actors and they have the knack for comedy. I will pick up good talent for the film.”

Well….well….well….we believe either the film should have Salman and Aamir or shouldn't be made at all!

Since 'Judwaa 2' has been announced, people can't wait for the film to be released. Varun Dhawan, Taapsee Pannu, and Jacqueline Fernandez have just wrapped up shooting for 'Judwaa 2'. And the makers are trying their level best to make this a blockbuster hit as the original film.

The film is a sequel to 'Judwaa' starring Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, and Rambha that made it big at the box office when it was released. From leaving us in splits to making us groove to ‘Tann Tana Tan Tan Tan Tara', Salman's performance was loved by everyone. And the cherry on top was seeing him in a double role.

Keeping in mind how Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor won our hearts with their epic chemistry in 'Judwaa', Varun and Jacqueline are set to recreate the same magic with Tu Mere Dil Main Bas Ja song for 'Judwaa 2'. We are excited and how!

As per media reports, the song will be picturised at the same location and for the same Varun and Jacqueline have flown to Mauritius. No doubt, it would be pretty interesting to see these two grooving to the 90s hit song.

Varun has been giving us sneak-peeks of what's happening on the sets of 'Judwaa 2' and we got to agree our anticipation is rising day by day. He recently shared a small clip of the film's climax and wrote, “An ass kicking climax. 7 days of mayhem. Blood, sweat and twins can't wait for you guys to see this side #prem #raja #judwaa2.”

salman_ranbirBollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor, whose debut production “Jagga Jasoos” released this Friday, says that everybody should make money and not just the producers.

The actor, who was present at a promotional event, was asked about his take on superstar Salman Khan, compensating for the loss to the distributors due to his last release “Tubelight”.

“It’s been going on for years. My grandfather was a producer from 1950 and I think this home style of making films — where everybody makes money not just the producer, the distributor and exhibitors — is a very healthy exercise. It’s very good to compensate when somebody loses money on something where you have kind of made money. But of course it depends from person to person and from film to film,” the “Rockstar” actor said.

Grandson of Raj Kapoor and great-grandson of Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Ranbir said that compensating for the losses runs in the family.
“Films like ‘Mera Nam Joker’ had heavy losses, so when grandfather released his film ‘Bobby’, he gave more of a percentage to the distributors and exhibitors. They maintained a sense of balance in it. Personally, if my film had losses and I was making money out of it, I would definitely compensate,” he said.

Speaking about the Amarnath attack, the “Tamasha” actor said: “It’s completely an act of horror, my condolences to the families and the victims. I will try and contribute as much as possible. I think at times like these when the country has to unite, people from every corner of society should come together. I don’t understand the gain out of terrorism or why people do it. It is the worst side of human nature; it’s very shameful that it’s happening within our world.”

“Jagga Jasoos” directed by Anurag Basu, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, and Sayani Gupta tells a story of a teenage detective in search of his missing father. The film released in theaters on July 14.
