The journey of making Manto and taking it to the audience at Cannes has so far been miraculous, says director Nandita Das. Taking a breather out of a “roller coaster ride” that she has had at the French Riviera over the last five days, Das says that after the last-minute running around before she arrived for the festival, the “carnival-like energy” lifted her spirits. Das says the premiere garnered a four-minute standing ovation, and strangers hugged her while sobbing.

“Some just sat in their seats, still immersed in the experience. Some chose to walk out quietly, as if not wanting to break their experience. Six years of relentless work and challenges had finally found their culmination.” The director said the feedback on Manto, featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was “overwhelmingly positive and their critique, interesting”.

Hours after Manto screening at Cannes Film Festival 2018, Nawazuddin Siddiqui tells mid-day how his labour of love got rousing reception

“It’s such a gratifying feeling,” said Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the joy evident in his voice. Speaking to us hours after the screening of Nandita Das’ Manto at the Cannes Film Festival last evening, he said, “People had tears in their eyes. I could see that I had done well by the way people were responding to my performance. Nandita has created a fantastic film. As actors, we do our bit and walk off. It’s she who has woven a wonderful tapestry, interspersing Manto’s works with his personal journey.”

Siddiqui is no stranger to the French Riviera. After his Gangs Of Wasseypur (2012) won hearts in the prestigious festival, Manto was selected in the Un Certain Regard segment this year. Admitting that he was “busy picking faults in my work” during the screening, Siddiqui adds, “Actors are poor judges of their own work. But, we have a good sense of what counts as a good film. I could gauge that Manto is a good movie from the raw emotions people had in their eyes.”

As Nawazuddin Siddiqui slipped into the role of Saadat Hasan Manto, the actor said his biggest takeaway was that truth always remains relevant. He cited an interesting example in Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi whose Three Faces opened to a thunderous response on Saturday. Like Manto, Panahi, too has faced the wrath of his homeland after his works offered a critique of modern Iran. “Manto fought for his freedom of speech and look how relevant it is right now. This exemplary filmmaker has been banned. Such a coincidence,” he exclaimed.

After Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s name cropped up for allegedly spying on his wife, the actor has dismissed these as “random allegations”

After Nawazuddin Siddiqui‘s name cropped up for allegedly spying on his wife, the actor has dismissed these as “random allegations”.

“Last evening, I was helping my daughter to prepare her school project Hydroelectric Power Generator and went to her school this morning for Project Exhibition. To my surprise, the media had questions about some random allegations on me. #Disgust,” Nawazuddin tweeted on Saturday morning.

The acclaimed award-winning actor has been accused of spying on his wife. His name cropped up after the Thane police’s Crime Branch nabbed 11 persons, mainly private detectives, who were involved in the Call Detail Records (CDR) scam.

According to statements by some of the accused, Siddiqui had allegedly acquired CDRs of his wife’s phone through an advocate by hiring a private sleuth to keep an eye on her contacts and whereabouts.

The police on Friday said Nawazuddin has not responded to police summons in this matter.

The film captures the evolution of television – from the black-and-white era when the family used to sit together every evening and enjoy limited content to the present-day plethora of options at the flick of a button.

The film took the actor back to his growing up days when the antenna would have to be manually fixed for better reception. Nawaz, however, feels the fervour for TV is no more the same and it is time to get it fixed with the right mix of content.

Nawazuddin-Siddiqui Nawazuddin Siddiqui and his brother Shamas Nawab Siddiqui on Thursday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate office’s zonal office in Lucknow in connection with an online fraud case. They were investigated by the authorities for an hour. Calling the allegations baseless, Shamas reportedly said that all allegations levelled against them are false and that they have shown all their papers and mails to the authorities.

Their lawyer Rizwan Siddiquee has now offered his statement and clarified the whole situation on his Twitter account. He wrote, ”Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee representing Mr. Nawazuddin Siddiqui states that there seems to be a lot of chaos and confusion with regards to a summons received by my client Mr. Nawazuddin Siddiqui from the Directorate of Enforcement. In this regard I would, therefore, like to clarify once and for all that my client has only rendered services for a company named Webwork Trade Links Pvt. Ltd. as a professional (Actor), and he has no other dealings with the said company which is under investigation conducted by the Enforcement Directorate. The remuneration that my client had legally and justifiably received towards his professional services had been duly declared to every concerned government department on time, even prior to the investigation. My client who has followed the provisions of law at every stage has absolutely nothing to fear or hide, as there is no guilt. The Enforcement Directorate which is investigating the said matter has been accordingly briefed from our side.”

Digging the money trail while investigating an e-commerce scam, the Enforcement Directorate discovered links between the directors of Webwork Trade Links Private limited and Nawaz. It had earlier served him a notice asking him to explain the Rs 1.15 crore he had received from the company.

Shamas was quoted saying that Nawaz did a TV commercial for a product called ‘adsbook.com’ and he is in no way concerned with the parent company Webwork Trade Links Pvt. Ltd. It was the parent company that faced problems with the ED and Nawaz was just routinely summoned to inquire about the monetary link between the Siddiquis and the company, Shamas reportedly added.

Nawaz Nawazuddin Siddiqui may have withdrawn his memoir ‘An Ordinary Life’, but his troubles are far from over. After ex-girlfriend, Niharika Singh lashed out at the actor for allegedly making false claims, his ‘first love’ Sunita Rajwar has reportedly sent him a legal notice and asked for compensation of Rs 2 crore for allegedly attempting to damage her image.

According to reports, she stated that she does not want to take any legal action because “the damage is already done and it’s irreversible.”

Sunita has also claimed she was wrongly portrayed as someone “who drove Nawaz to think of committing suicide,” and pointe out that they have not been on talking terms from past 16 years.

The report further states that Nawaz mentioned in his book that Sunita dumped him because he was not successful, which she feels is a ‘figment of his imagination’.

While stating that she wants an unconditional apology from the actor, she also went on to reveal that all the talk of the book being withdrawn is just a gimmick as the book is still in circulation.

In the wake of the numerous controversies his book stirred up, Nawaz took to Twitter to issue an apology and announce the withdrawal of his book. His tweet read, “I’m apologising to everyone who’s sentiments are hurt because of the chaos around my memoir #AnOrdinaryLife I hereby regret & decide 2 withdraw my book”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s revelations about his personal life and affairs in his biography ‘An Ordinary Life’ shocked everyone. The actor has mentioned about his affairs, his one-night stands and his torrid affair with Miss Lovely actress, Niharika Singh. Nawazuddin has called himself a ‘rascal’ and a ‘b##t#rd who only went to women when he needed them and claims that he was not a faithful lover. Now, Niharika has come out with her version of the affair.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Niharika Singh says,”Nawaz and I had a brief relationship during the making of Miss Lovely that lasted less than a few months. So today when he paints me as a woman in fur enticing him into her bedroom with candles, or desperately calling him and emailing other women on his behalf, I can only laugh. He obviously wants to sell his book and it would appear that he is willing to exploit and disrespect a woman just to do so. He has chosen to fabricate stories and manipulate a fleeting relationship. None of what he has written has been to my knowledge, let alone my consent. It is this very aspect of Nawaz that caused me to end my relationship with him in the first place. I have always maintained that he’s a brilliant actor. However, I had hoped these acting skills would have remained confined only to the screen. Still, I wish him well.”

Nandita Das plans to release her film, Manto, in mid-2018. The biopic features Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the celebrated Urdu short-story writer, Saadat Hasan Manto.

Talking about the film at the ongoing MAMI film festival in the city, she said, “Editing is my favourite part of filmmaking. That’s where you correct the mistakes that you have made. It has been an incredible journey. Hopefully, it will be in theatres mid-2018.”

She added, “You can’t ask a director how happy he or she is with their film, that’s a tricky one. But I know it can’t get worse. It can only get better in the post-production.”
Working on Manto has been an enriching experience for Das. “Nawaz and Rasika Duggal are wonderful. They are accomplished actors and also incredible human beings,” she said.

Replying to which, she quipped, “The person should have a clean heart and pure soul. No matter what the person does but if he’s not a clean-hearted person, I won’t get impressed. This is the only thing that I want. I don’t need or want to do anything with anyone’s hotness, cuteness, sense of humour or intelligence.”
