The recently concluded star-studded award show, IIFA 2017, will be remembered for various reasons – glamorous beauties and dapper actors walking the green carpet, best talents getting acknowledged for their hard work and some of our favourite movies getting their due in the form of awards. But, of all these reasons, there was one that took the award show to a harmonious and soulful level. It became a memorable night for all the fans of Oscar and Grammy winner A.R. Rahman, who rocked the award night and set the stage on fire with his fabulous live performance. However, this isn’t even the best part. Rahman was honoured for his 25 years of musical journey at the award show.

It’s ironic how one section of the world was appreciating Rahman’s work and breaking in cheers and ‘encore’ during his performance, there were some who didn’t have ears to appreciate good music and walked out of his London concert because he sang Tamil songs. However, unfazed by this disrespectful gesture, Rahman performed at IIFA Rocks at the MetLife stadium and was joined by stalwarts like Diljit Dosanjh, Benny Dayal, Neeti Mohan, Jonita Gandhi and Javed Ali. He reportedly said, “I am thankful to you all for coming and supporting the concert…love you.”

Feeling excited to perform along with Rahman, singer Mika said “I am feeling very happy and proud that he (Rahman) called me here. make some noise for Rahman sir. Love you all.” ‘Naddan Parindey’, ‘Dil Hai Chota Sa’, ‘Agar Tum Saath Ho’, ‘Bin Tere Kya Jeena’ and ‘Mere Paas Hai Tu’ were some of the mesmerising numbers he sang. Unlike the thankless crowd from his London concert, people cheered loudly when he performed songs like ‘Urvasi Urvasi’ and ‘Humma Humma’.

I lived my entire life believing that music is free from all the geographical boundaries and was over any and every language and religion, but after what happened at music maestro AR Rahman’s concert at Wembley Stadium in London, I feel that it was all a lie. Music is still largely overshadowed by language and except for those who genuinely love music, none of us understand the true essence or beauty of songs. On July 8th, Rahman was playing at a concert titled ‘Netru, Indru, Naalai’ in London, where he sang a couple of ‘Tamil songs’ along with Hindi songs and people apparently had problems with that. Some irked fans were so upset with the songs that they left the show midway and even demanded for a refund since they didn’t sign up for a “Tamil Concert”.

I can’t facepalm enough over this absurd line of thought of those who, at one point, called themselves Rahman’s fans. If this is how they feel about concerts and music, then I hope they weren’t a part of the crowd cheering at Justin Bieber’s or Coldplay’s India concert. But, I won’t be surprised if they were standing at the forefront and singing the lyrics as well, because clearly Tamil songs come nowhere close to English songs or the ones preferred by the West. I am not trying to fuel or trigger any debate around this Western hangover, but singing ‘Despacito’ is much easier than singing the “Punjirithanji Konjikko” verse from ‘Jiya Jale’ right? Of course, I am right! Or when K-Pop star Psy rolled out ‘Gangnam Style’, why didn’t we Indians boycott that song or left it midway because it wasn’t in Hindi? Or maybe Tamil is tougher than Korean, who knows.

Twitter was flooded with posts about how disappointed some people were after attending a concert that had too many Tamil songs and hardly any Hindi ones; or how it was disrespectful for someone who made his name in Bollywood.

That was my first ever Tamil concert guys. Albeit completely unintentional #ARRahman #SSEArena #Fail #Refund?

— Omer Chowdhury (@OmChow) 8 July 2017

Was total disaster, for someone who made his name in Bollywood(at least on sheer numbers) it was disrespectful from him, even speaking Tamil

— Apoorva Dixit (@apoorva_dixit) 9 July 2017

Was so disappointed and left half way through. The promoter #HumsiniEntertainment should of said 99% songs will be Tamil. I wouldnt of come

1.#India is Not Hindia
2. #Hindi is not mother of Music
3.This Earth not only for Hindi speaking ppl  #ARRahman #stopHindiImposition

— Mani Vasu (@ManiVasu2) 14 July 2017

When and why did music become a language game, still confuses me? If you can groove to Sukhbir’s ‘Ishq Tadpave’, Honey Singh’s peppy numbers or Diljit’s Punjabi songs, sometimes even without knowing Punjabi, how can you raise such a hue and cry against a song that happens to be from another language, say Tamil? I don’t intend to demean any songs of other language, but I do want to make a point that music shouldn’t be infected with the regional or language discrimination. Being as humble as Rahman is, his reaction has put all those people who left the gig because he sang Tamil songs to shame. He reportedly said, “We try our best. We try to be honest. I love the way how people have supported for all these years without them I’m nothing. I’m grateful to all of them.”

After this unfortunate turn of events, many singers came forward to express their views. Singer Chinmayi Sripaada tweeted about the whole incident and we couldn’t agree more.

When Rahman sir wins 2 Oscars and creates history, he is “An Indian”, but 7-8 Tamil gaane kya gaa liye aap naraaz hote ho. What yaar?

— Chinmayi Sripaada (@Chinmayi) 14 July 2017

The show was called ‘Netru Indru Naalai’, had 65% Hindi songs (Set List is out there). Music knows no boundaries / language.

— Chinmayi Sripaada (@Chinmayi) 14 July 2017

Chase the American dream, your kids can Spanish; Live in the UK that once colonised India –  but cry foul when a when you hear Tamil songs

— Chinmayi Sripaada (@Chinmayi) 14 July 2017

While some were irked over Rahman singing Tamil songs, his concert in New Jersey was the exact opposite and possibly filled with genuine music lovers. People broke out in cheers of ‘Encore’ even as the clock struck at 2 a.m. on Saturday morning. The audience was kicked about his performance and did not crib about him singing a couple of Tamil songs.

It is fine to have our own set of preferences or an inclination towards a particular genre of music, but disrespecting an artist becuase he played songs of a certian language is outright bizarre. It is really upsetting to see that people were disappointed over such a ridiculous thing and for all those folks who are demanding refunds, next time don’t insult music with such remarks. Instead, stay at home and listen to the songs from your USB or mobile phone.

Shah Rukh Khan probably has the most loyal fans in the whole world, and rightfully so. You can love him or hate him, but you can’t deny the fact that he is an incredible actor, one of the best in the country. He just weaves magic on the screen with his movies, and leaves people mesmerized.

Moreover, he is so charming and witty, that there is no other actor who can match his level of sassiness. He really is the king of Bollywood in every sense of the word and it is actually really hard not to love him and his movies.

Huma QureshiHuma Qureshi

As part of her audition for Gurinder Chadha’s film, Partition 1947, Huma Qureshi had to enact a scene of drying clothes. Huma made a video and sent it across to the filmmaker in London. Just one glimpse of Huma was enough for Chadha to cast her in the film.

Those who thought drying clothes was a mundane task, better know that it may sometimes also land you a film.

The ‘Mubarakan’ trailer dropped today and the only thing we miss in the movie is probably having a real life Diljit ! Arjun Kapoor and Anil Kapoor play the roles of quintessential Punjabis in London. Arjun is seen in a double role as Charan and Karan.

Anil is the super cool bachelor uncle who is the masala to bland dish. We still cannot believe that this man has touched 60! Because he sure as hell shows no signs of slowing down.

Kate hoax call: Indian nurse`s funeral in Karnataka town on Monday Mangalore: The body of Indian-origin nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who was found dead Dec 7 in London, will be buried at Shirva town in coastal Karnataka, family sources said Saturday.

“The coffin carrying Jacintha’s body is expected to arrive here from London via Mumbai Sunday afternoon and will be taken to Shirva Monday for last rites and funeral at the local cemetery around 4 p.m.,” Udupi Superintendent of Police M. Boralingaiah told IANS, citing family sources.

Kate hoax call: Indian nurse`s funeral in Karnataka town on Monday

Jacintha’s husband Benedict Barboza and her son Junal,16, and daughter Lisha,14, will accompany the coffin from London to Shirva about 50 km from here and 400 km from Bangalore.

“The coffin will be kept in Mangalore for the night at a mortuary or a place the family will decide. The place could also be the residence of Jacintha’s mother, who lives in a suburb of Mangalore with her son and another daughter,” Boralingaiah said.

Security arrangements are being made in Mangalore and at Shirva to maintain law and order and ensure no untoward incident takes place.

Shirva is the homo town of Barboza where his mother and sisters reside. It is well known for growing jasmine flowers.

“We estimate about 5,000 people to attend Jacintha’s funeral at Shirva, including VIPs and local officials. The coffin will first be taken to the local church for mass and then to the Catholic cemetery for burial,” Boralingaiah said, quoting the family.

Kate hoax call: Indian nurse`s funeral in Karnataka town on Monday

Mangalore diocese Vicar General Dennis Prabhu and Mangalore Archbishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza will hold a prayer service in the local cathedral Sunday evening where both the families, their relatives and friends will be present.

Saldanha, who graduated from Father Muller College of Nursing in Mangalore in the mid-1980s, first worked at Muscat in Oman for a few years and went to London after marriage 15 years ago to live with barboza, an accountant in the British National Health Service at Bristol, 190km from London.

Jacintha was found unconscious Dec 7 morning in the quarters of King Edward VII Hospital in central London where she was working as a senior nurse, and was pronounced dead when wheeled into the hospital in an ambulance.

Jacintha got unwittingly involved in a hoax call Dec 4 from a radio station in Australia when she was on duty at the hospital where Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middletown was admitted Dec 3 after she complained of acute morning sickness.

When the jockeys (Mel Greig and Michael Christian) from Sydney radio station called the hospital early Dec 4 imitating the voice of the queen (Elizabeth) and the prince (Charles), Jacintha picked the call in the absence of the receptionist at that time (5.30a.m.) and transferred it to another duty nurse who briefed them on the health condition of the royal princess (Kate).

Though Kate was discharged Dec 6, news about the prank call shocked the royal family and caused outraged the world over, especially in the British media.

Rafa Benitez eyeing Chelsea swoop for WalcottLondon: Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez is reportedly trying to land Arsenal winger Theo Walcott at Stampford Bridge.

Benitez is confident of getting his man as the 15 million pound-rated player would not have to uproot from London.

Liverpool and both Manchester clubs are also in the hunt for Walcott.

However, Chelsea have sent a scout to watch Walcott, and plan to use him as a more central attacker, a role the England man craves, The Sun reports.

According to the paper, interim boss Benitez will have cash to spend in next month’s transfer window.

He rates Walcott’s lightning pace as a huge asset as he looks to land a player to support Fernando Torres, the paper said.

The forward, 23, has refused to sign a new 80,000 pounds-a-week contract at Arsenal, and can leave for nothing next summer when his current deal runs out, the paper added.

Indian-origin nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who was found hanging at her official accommodation at a London hospital recently, had apparently left three suicide notes.

One of these notes criticised the hospital staff, details accessed by Headlines Today revealed.

The 46-year-old senior nurse was on December 7 found hanging from a wardrobe in her apartment on the premises of King Edward VII Hospital, where she worked.

She had allegedly committed suicide after a prank call from two Australian radio presenters, who pretended to be the Queen and Prince Charles enquiring about the condition of Kate, who is pregnant and was undergoing treatment in the hospital for morning sickness.

One of the suicide notes has been addressed to the hospital management that also criticises some staffers. Another note talks about the prank call made by the Australian presenters.

In the other suicide note Saldanha has requested for her funeral.

While two notes lied at the spot, another one was later found from Saldanha’s belongings. Her family has been given typed copies of the three handwritten notes by the police.

On Thursday, findings of the autopsy on her body were revealed to the Westminster coroner at the formal opening of the inquest. It said that the woman was found hanging in her apartment and there were injuries on her wrists.

Noted humanitarian, poet, journalist, photographer, TV host, painter, editor, columnist, and filmmaker Pritish Nandy just added another feather to his already feathered cap.

The Government of Bangladesh has invited Pritish Nandy for a special State honour on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Liberation struggle. The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, who is also the National Convenor of the Friends of the Bangladesh Liberation Struggle, recently wrote to Nandy saying that though it is forty years late, it is never too late to recognise and honour someone who did so much for their freedom struggle.

The awards ceremony, held only from this year on December 15, is to honour those who participated in the liberation struggle of Bangladesh and helped the nation become free. Pritish Nandy will be attending the event along with his wife Rina. Talking about the honour Nandy says, “‘The birth of Bangladesh was a miracle. Most wars end in stalemate but Indira Gandhi won it decisively and with amazing precision. I was proud to play a role in the making of a new nation, a nation born out of the love for a language and a proud culture: Bengali.” This year marks the 40th anniversary of the formation of Bangladesh.

Nandy, barely entering his twenties then, was one of the most ardent campaigners for a free Bangladesh. He reported first hand on the war for freedom, translated the works of the then little known poets of the Bangladesh movement who are now iconic figures in Bengali literature across the border and got them published from London, Chicago and other parts of the world to bring focus to their war efforts, and was one of the central figures of the movement when he lived in Calcutta in the early seventies.

All the leaders of the freedom struggle were his personal friends, including Sheikh Mujibur Rehman who became the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Interestingly, the man who subsequently assassinated him, Major Dalim was also known to Nandy during the freedom struggle days when he came to Calcutta as a young army officer for medical treatment after a serious grenade injury. Nandy was a leading poet then and some of his own poems in the book Madness is the Second Stroke were inspired by the Bangladesh war.

The famous British painter Feliks Topolski collaborated with Pritish Nandy to bring out poems from Bangladesh, a book of poems from London. Nandy is one of Indian poetry’s most celebrated name whose books, record albums and readings have drawn him an iconic following and won him the Padma Shri and the EM Forster Literary Award at an age most people barely begin their literary career.

Nandy launched his production company Pritish Nandy Communications Ltd, in 1998, which has made over 25 films over the past decade including (Kaante, Jhankaar Beats, Chameli, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Shabd, Pyaar Ke Side Effects) now acclaimed as cult movies. His next production, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, starring Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan rolls next year.
