Actress Kangana Ranaut, known to speak her mind despite the reactions her words elicit, says it is difficult to remain “headstrong” in Bollywood as there are always people who try to make one “feel insignificant”. But she continues to fight it.

“Being an outsider in the business, I have fought to carve a niche for myself. I have also been opinionated and I choose to express my views openly,” Kangana told IANS in an email interview.

“In our industry, it becomes difficult to remain headstrong as you are often judged for not following the status quo. There will always be a segment that will try to make you feel insignificant, but it is important to channel your strength and confidence and work hard to triumph. It’s important to grow a distinct voice to break the clutter,” added the National Award winner.

Kangana, a Reebok brand ambassador, is a part of the second edition of the brand’s #FitToFight campaign, which fights looming gender demons of eve-teasing and pay disparity. The actress has been actively talking about her struggle in the industry as well as her relationships with actors like Aditya Pancholi and Hrithik Roshan. She tagged filmmaker Karan Johar as a “flagbearer of nepotism” during his chat show. Does she consider herself “mentally tough and fit to fight”? “Absolutely,” she said.

“My experiences in life, on the personal and professional fronts, have helped shape the individual I am today. There have been moments in my life when it was very difficult to continue working in unfavourable conditions. But I fought my way, to make a mark for myself.

“I realised the importance of being tough, both mentally and physically, which encouraged me to deliver my best regardless of the odds. In my journey, I learned that challenges may always beset you, but if one is strong-willed and determined, you can overcome them,” added Kangana, often tagged the “Queen” of Bollywood.

In her last released film “Simran”, she played an imperfectly perfect girl who wants to lead life on her own terms. Does she think such characters hardly exist in real life where girls are always following the norm? “My career trajectory is full of characters and films where I am trying to redefine the conventional heroine tag. I think it is important to reinvent oneself continuously and diversify your craft.

“I have been fortunate that I have worked in path-breaking films such as ‘Fashion’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Queen’ and ‘Simran’ where I play individualistic characters. I do know ‘Queen’ had a strong impact on viewers. I always choose to do roles where there is a message being delivered that makes the viewer think differently and shapes their choices,” said the actress, who will next be seen in “Manikarnika”.

She also feels “there are many women who aspire to dream bigger and better” and she is one of them. Kangana, who comes from a small town in Himachal Pradesh, says her circumstances never discouraged her from chasing her dreams. “I encourage women to believe in their strength and value their hard work. My motto has always been to follow my own path and not succumb to norms. I believe it’s important to celebrate yourself and grow with each experience,” she said. This is what she is trying to promote with the #FitToFight campaign.

“I hope to inspire other girls through my stories of courage, faith and conviction. I truly believe in the limitless potential that every woman possesses to be physically, mentally and socially fit. I do hope my story and journey of facing adversities, fighting obstacles and emerging stronger and fitter, will inspire other women to be Fit to Fight,” she said.

On Monday, at MAMI there were only women panelists belonging to varied fields. It was a treat to watch such talented women talking about women empowerment and speaking their hearts out about the drastic gender inequality in the field of Indian cinema. ‘Lights, Camera, and Equality’ is the motto of Oxfam- an international confederation of the charitable organization. Bollywood members like Shabana Azmi, Kiran Rao, Nandita Das, Manisha Koirala and Kriti Sanon amongst others were present at this occasion. Ecstatic about the collaboration, Kiran Rao says it’s a great ‘synergy’. Further talking about Oxfam, Rao adds, “Oxfam’s initiative is to get together women and talk about gender issues and how much change you are going to make to the world.”

Veteran Shabana Azmi affirmed that the change has started, though it’s just a ‘drop in the ocean’, it has begun. So, as an extension to this topic, mid-day exclusively got in touch with the actresses present at the Oxfam Best Film on Gender Equality.

When quizzed Kiran Rao, who does she considers the powerhouse of an actress from Bollywood, with the immense crowd-pulling potential to cinema halls, she said it would be difficult to take names, but spoke about the actresses who made a mark with their roles.

“People like Vidya Balan, Rani Mukherjee, Kangana Ranaut, Alia Bhatt are the ones, who’ve chosen roles that are outside of the expected game. When a very very glamorous actress decides that she wants to be a farmer, a house-help in the film. Maybe they’ve chosen a role, which is not like the stereotype, we see in Hindi films. I think they are definitely pushing the envelope.”

Rao spoke at length about Kangana Ranaut. “With every film she does, she tries to do something. She chooses films where women play a crucial part, and it’s not that they are extremely heroic. They maybe anti-heroes. You see a woman thinking big and making decisions for their layered personality, their character. I think those are the women who are pushing the envelope.”

Neha Dhupia, too, mentioned Kangana amongst other actresses, for being influential women. She determinately said, “I think there’s Alia Bhatt, Kangana Ranaut, Deepika Padukone. I take Deepika’s name again and again because I was floored by what she did in Piku. That’s one of her best performances as far as I’m concerned. Yes, there’s this opportunity of magnum opus like Padmavati waiting to watch out, but she played it even beautifully in a small film, so I think these three women can for sure.”

The 90s diva Manisha Koirala, too, considers Kangana Ranaut as a powerful actress apart from Deepika Padukone. “There are some really strong actresses coming forward and portraying themselves in a different way. I love Deepika Padukone very much because she’s upper-talented and spoke about depression. She was able to come out of that glamour and class and finally put across her issue and she could have had a real problem…”

“And of course, Kangana has always been there. More and more women could come forward and stop playing blame-game and (was she hinting at Hrithik Roshan and Kangana row?) probably finding a creative solution to the situation because I believe there is more way of coming out with peaceful solutions to every problem,” added Manisha.

However, present at the Oxfam event was a young actress from the current crop, Kriti Sanon, who went the neutral said, ” I think we are in a time where content is something that pulls the audience to the cinema halls. I think that’s a good change, where the film is not actor-dependent, it is but not so much, and that kind of balances out the equality thing that we have.”

kangana_adityaKangana Ranaut recently made a startling revelation in a television interview stating, “Aditya Pancholi got an apartment for me but didn’t allow my friends to come there. It was a kind of house arrest. Then I went to meet his wife. His daughter is a year older than me. I was a minor”.

Narrating the incident, she revealed, “I remember going to his wife (Zarina Wahab) and meeting her, and I was like ‘Please save me! I’m younger than your daughter. I can’t tell my parents. She said to me that they were relieved that he was not at home otherwise he raised his hand on domestic helpsand others. She said it’s actually good for us if he is not around, so I can’t help you”.

Now, Aditya and his wife Zarina had sent a legal notice to Kangana. Aditya spoke about the same to a leading daily, “I am not angry, but I am definitely hurt by Kangana’s act”.

He revealed, “The legal team sent Kangana and her sister Rangoli notices, but their response wasn’t up to the mark. We asked them to apologise unconditionally on the same national platforms where Kangana made those derogatory remarks against me. Eventually, her sister and she dragged even my son, daughter and wife into all this. That’s the reason Zarina and I decided to file a defamation case against her, which is both civil and criminal”.

Asked if his complaint is related to Kangana’s controversy with Hrithik Roshan, he stated, “My case against Kangana has nothing to do with what is happening between Hrithik and her. Hrithik can deal with his own issues, but I’m clear that I will not keep quiet about whatever is bothering me. Cases are fought on merit and evidence. Remarks and statements will not come handy in the court of law, proofwill. The onus to prove her merit lies with her. Once the case is up for hearing, we’ll know”.

“Kangana has no right to talk about my family and me in such a manner. Why should I shut up? If I don’t fight for my family, who will? If someone makes remarks about my family, should I lock myself up in a room and sit tight? Someone has to put an end to her lies, and the only way to do it is through the law. I don’t want to stoop to her level”, concludes Aditya.

Hrithik Roshan recently gave a tell-all interview to a popular news channel and a host, where he explained his side of the story in the big Kangana Ranaut vs Hrithik Roshan fight. Hrithik, denied being involved with the actress and has sought help of the police force to help him sort out his mess. He also feels that his silence was being misconstrued as his weakness and that he has now decided to speak up. Soon, after this interview aired, Bollywood celebs decided to show their solidarity for Hrithik and decided to stand by him. Not just actors, but even actresses posted their thoughts about the Kangana-Hrithik fight, but it was obvious that their views were partisan.

Hrithik, however gave another statement asking his friends to not take sides. The most vocal support that he received from the fraternity came from Farhan Akhtar, who is known to voice his opinion on ‘women oriented’ issues. However, all seems to be forgotten as Hrithik was seen partying with Farhan Akhtar, Farah Khan, Tabu and few other friends from the industry. Filmmaker Karan Johar was also spotted at the soiree and he shared a pic with Hrithik on his Instagram page.

Seems like all is fine now that the industry has decided to back Hrithik and cheer him up from his personal woes. The past few years have been tough on Hrithik due to personal and professional issues. His film ‘Mohenjo Daro’ bombed badly at the box-office and his wife of 17 years, Sussanne Khan decided to separate from him.

The controversy between Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan won’t die down soon. On the contrary, it continues to scale new heights. After his elaborate post on Facebook in which he refuted all allegations from Kangana by stating that it is him who is the real victim and urged people not to term the controversy as a lovers’ spat, Hrithik opened up about his alleged relationship with the actress in an exclusive interview with CNN-News18’s Bhupendra Chaubey

After maintaining his silence for the longest time, Hrithik Roshan has finally opened up on his and Kangana Ranaut spat. The saga seems to be a never-ending one. In an interview to a leading channel, while speaking about the accusations made on him by Kangana and sister Rangoli, he was prodded if it was the Kangana factor which led to his separation from Sussanne Khan.

It was in 2014, that Hrithik announced his separation from his then-wife of 17 years, which took the nation by storm. For the maiden time, he bared it about his divorce from Sussanne and it’s not due to Kangana.

Confirming about the same, he stated, “Absolutely not. Sussanne has been very very vocal about this. She has been very vocal. And I feel like laughing at people. When people get divorced, it is not always because of infidelity by the man. That is just such a small minded assumption. I am just trying to say that there are many reasons why people would like to live separate lives. Infidelity is just one of them. So the general assumption was, ‘Ah he is the superstar, he must have done something wrong. She must have caught him..’ That is not the case. We are great friends. It is between us. The reason that we decided to live separately may have been an inspiring reason, how do you know?”

The estranged couple is often spotted holidaying at exquisite locations with sons Hrehaan and Hredaan. Apart from vacationing together, the duo is also spotted for luncheons and dinners in the city.

The spat between Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan seems to be getting messier with each passing day, leaving Bollywood and their fans perplexed about what’s going to happen next. Controversies are pouring in with each new development and the nation is visibly divided between who is right and who is wrong.

What started as a candid mention about a ‘silly ex’ during one of her interviews has become a matter of grave importance and it will be a lie if we say that we are not interested in knowing how the upcoming events will unfold. Almost everyone is curious to know who is telling the truth, and while Kangana has been vocal about her side of the story since the beginning, it is only now that Hrithik has spoken up about the issue. He finally broke his silence on Thursday, revealing certain details that we weren’t aware about.

Ever since this controversy played out in full public view, fans have been taking sides of their respective celebrities and in all honesty most of the views were emotion-driven. Not many focused on the facts or details that were revealed throughout. Even most celebrities chose to stay away from this discussion. Also there is no denying that from the beginning of this controversy, people have conveniently charged guns towards Hrithik, making him the bad guy without any strong evidence. Not that we are trying to demean Kangana but at least, let’s not jump to any conclusions before the issue is sorted out. And that’s exactly what actor Farhan Akhtar too appealed to his fans in a moving Facebook post about the whole issue.

Without naming the two parties, Hrithik’s ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ co-star expressed his concern over how some sections of media have “consciously or unconsciously, pushed one side of the narrative WITHOUT having or presenting any evidence to back the claims being made by the woman. They’ve accepted her story at face value.” He even raised the issue of discrimination against the other party.

He further states that “Although it is true that in most cases it is a woman that has been wronged, there is a difference between ‘most’ and ‘all’.” He also points out the various details that most of us either forgot to notice or didn’t care about while taking a stand on behalf of our favourite celebrities. He even urges people to not take sides since no one knows what the truth is. This is what he posted on facebook.

Other celebs too commended Farhan’s words and shared similar thoughts.

Beautifully  written Farhan….it’s important…it’s true! https://t.co/zoY4VKahfw

Well written and very fair Farhan. I concur. https://t.co/NXBUAiLq3O

— Yami Gautam (@yamigautam) October 8, 2017

In fact, actress Yami Gautam too took to Facebook to share her thoughts about the entire controversy, which is only worsening with each day. She even urges people to not make it a gender war.

This particular bundle of dirty laundry seems to be getting dirtier by the day. The more you think it’s over now, a new chapter of the story unfolds, giving the public and the tinsel town all the more fodder to gossip about. Too much drama, too many talks but we still don’t know who is right and who’s not!

The messy affair between Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan and leading heroine Kangana Ranaut is out in the open for everyone to see, comment and analyse. It all began when Kangana had candidly started talking about her ‘silly ex’ during interviews with the media just before the release of her film ‘Simran’. Some considered it a mere publicity stunt while some sympathized with her story.

But never once we heard Hrithik utter a single work. However, last week, Hrithik finally decided to share his side of the story. Firstly he released a full-fledged strongly worded statement on social media saying, “Civilization suffers. Closer to home, families suffer. Children suffer,” giving us an idea about why he has finally decided to advocate his case.

Here are some of the highlights of the actor’s statement which have set tongues wagging:

‘Dragged into a dirty perverse mess’:

“I don’t see any grace in adding to this circus by testifying in defence of my character in a situation that I have no involvement in whatsoever. I have been dragged into a dirty perverse mess without a choice in the matter. This is something that is not of my making”

‘Never met her (Kangana) one on one’:

“The truth is, I have never met the lady in question one on one in my entire life. Yes, we have worked together, but there has been no meeting in private. That’s the truth.”

‘Aware of my faults. I am human’:

“Please understand, I am not fighting against an allegation of an affair. Or being childish trying to uphold a ‘good guy” image. I am very aware of my faults, I am human.”

Hrithik Roshan and Kangana (c) Twitter

‘No Evidence’:

“An alleged 7-year long, passionate affair between two high profile celebrities with no trail left behind. No evidence, no paparazzi pictures, no witnesses, not even a memento in possession like a selfie taken at the alleged engagement which is claimed to have happened in Paris in Jan 2014. Nothing that constitutes an exchange or any sort of proof of a romantic relationship.”

‘Photoshopped Image’:

The only so-called proof presented of this alleged “relationship”, was a photoshopped picture in the media. This was immediately exposed, the very next day by friends including my ex-wife.

 ‘No Paris proposal’:

“My passport details show no travel outside the country in Jan 2014, which is the date that this alleged engagement supposedly took place. In Paris.”

‘Harassed for 4 years’:

“I have been harassed by this for 4 years and the well meaning and probably necessary social bias towards women has deemed me helpless in defending myself.”

Read the full statement here:

However, this was just the tip of the iceberg, as Hrithik also gave his first TV interview since the controversy started and here’s all that he revealed to Arnab Goswami:

‘Have never had a fight in my life’:

“I am not a confrontational person. I have never had a fight in my life – neither with a man nor a girl. Even in my divorce, there was no fight. I know that there is absolutely no grace in what I am doing right now. There is no grace in sitting here and testifying for my character and making myself sound right and good and true, and by implication, making someone else seem wrong,” he said.

‘Afraid of being misconstrued’:

“I was also very afraid. I’m afraid that my words would be misconstrued. If I come across as strong they might term me as aggressive, if I show emotion they might term me as weak, if I show that I am vulnerable, they say ‘he’s looking for sympathy.”

Hrithik Roshan and Kangana (c) Twitter

‘Things were affecting me’:

“I need to say what I want to say, but I have to keep living up to this star thing of mine. I have to be cool and not give any attention to something that is not important, but after a while, I realised I was pretending. It was affecting me, it was affecting my community, it was affecting my sense of well being. That’s not being a hero, that’s being fake.”

Upon being asked as to why there was no police complaint throughout the drama, here is what he said:

“I didn’t want to name her. I could have replied, I could have made a phone call, I could have sent an SMS saying ‘come over’, but thank God I didn’t. I didn’t want to associate with this at all. I am a creative person. I have kids. I had no interest in this. Until it started manifesting in the outside world. I can handle things in my inbox. I deal with my problems. I can just brush it aside and move on.”

Hrithik Roshan and Kangana (c) Twitter

It was interesting to see how during the whole interview Hrithik avoided calling Kangana by her name and kept referring to her as, ‘the lady’, ‘the person’, ‘the girl’ and so on.

Interestingly, all that Hrithik’s statement has done has snowballed the entire issue into something even bigger than before. The ball is in Kangana’s court now and we can’t wait to see the scorching forehand with which she hits back.

Check out the whole interview here.

Filmmaker Anurag Basu, who directed Kangana Ranaut’s first Bollywood film, Gangster (2006), is happy to see her grow as an actor. “Kangana is fantastic. She is growing with each film. I remember, before we started shooting for Gangster, we had a workshop. I saw a spark in her, but had no idea that she will become such a huge star. I feel proud when I look at her growth,” says Basu, who also collaborated with Ranaut on Life In A Metro (2007) and Kites (2010).
