‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’
A; Action
Director: Kushan Nandy
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bidita Bag, Jatin Goswami
Rating:  3 stars

A major issue with a film without any moral compass/centre whatsoever is that it’s unlikely to generate much empathy among its audiences, whether for the situations on screen, or the characters concerned. Anybody can be shot at, and die, or not; and since all of them are bad guys anyway, who cares? That’s a bummer.

Be that as it may, this is that dystopian, guilty-pleasure, very ‘male’ movie, if you may, that gracefully avoids descending into obvious misogyny, and which you wish to access precisely for the grime, sex, guns, and a dark-grey world, where practically everyone is so frickin’ twisted in the first place.

The ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ in the boondocks is incidentally Babu Bihari, the sharpshooter (Nawazuddin Siddique). Forget small-town, this is almost a rural film. The sharp-shooter has made a name for himself in his UP hamlet over years. One of the young lads (Jatin Goswami) is Babu’s shagird in disguise. He looks up to him and hopes to beat him at his own game. What’s the game, really?

Well there isn’t quite a well thought-out modus operandi frankly, besides that Babu does the hit-job and heads off to a home far away in the fields that no one knows of. Perhaps even that doesn’t matter, since North India is cinematically very much the Wild West, where anything goes, and the boys have a lot to learn from Dirty Harry flicks playing dubbed in Hindi on their television set.

Oh, and another thing about this film’s genre. The gun-slinging hero is usually supposed to be a stylized action-star, walking in slo-mo to scintillating notes on the slide/electric guitar. There’s none of that here. There’s hardly any background score. If anything, Nawaz—the diminutive, casually soft-spoken Everyman in shirt and lungi—is the opposite of obvious swag. You’re naturally drawn to him nonetheless because you simply can’t take your eyes off his understated presence. This is not the first time. He literally stoops to conquer.

The beauty of this film is also the sort of fresh talents you see around the li’l guy—the cop character is a complete champ, as is Babu’s competitor, or his wife, or the politician…. Together they represent a rather rooted, moody film with a fairly recognizable family tree, some of which show up in obvious nods/tributes to pics like Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya (Babu and his wife at the door, when he returns home), or Gangs Of Wasseypur (the camera gazing at a naked man washing clothes by the tube-well, instead of a woman). Soundtrack sounds slightly Vishal Bharadwaj.

Actually, come to think of it, if you took out all the characters and crime-history from Gangs Of Wasseypur, you’ll come close to this. Given what a masterpiece Gangs was, that’s a pretty good compliment by the way!

barfani-song-aThe Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer film ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’, has already become the most talked about film mainly because of the intimate scenes. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bidita Bag will be seen sharing several intimate moments in the film and that had invited the wrath of ex-CBFC chief, Pahlaj Nihalani. The makers had appealed to the FCAT and the has been cleared by the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) with ‘eight minor, voluntary cuts’.

Since the film got attention because of the racy nature of its trailer and songs, actress Bidita Bag spoke at lenght about the ‘love making scenes’ in the film. In an interview to Mumbai Mirror, Bidita Bag says, “Phulwa, my character in the film is very unusual. The first two takes were looking very innocent, cute and lovey-dovey. The character’s boldness, the rawness, her overpowering personality and her passion was not showing. So I insisted on retakes to bring about that rawness. Also, I was cast opposite Nawazuddin, a perfectionist. While kissing for the camera, two people shouldn’t merely be rubbing at each other’s lips. A kiss should be true to the characters they are playing.”

Despite this being her first film with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the actress had no apprehension or qualms about performing intimate scenes before the camera. Bidita has often mentioned that Nawazuddin comforted her and their chemistry stems from there. Chitrangda Singh, who was formerly signed for the thriller, had already shot for the intimate scenes earlier. As she is no longer a part of the film, Nawazuddin had to re-shoot for the scenes with Bidita. Now that The Tribunal has passed the film without cuts, the intimate scenes can be seen in theatres.

Produced by Kiran Shyam Shroff and Ashmith Kunder, directed by Kushan Nandy and written by Ghalib Asad Bhopali, ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ is scheduled to release on August 25.

barfani-babumoshai-bandookbaaz-0001Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer “Babumoshai Bandookbaaz” has been cleared by the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) with eight “minor and voluntary cuts”. Its team is happy, says writer Ghalib Asad Bhopali.

Bhopali told IANS: “We are very happy because all the cuts are very minor. Now, the audience can see what we wanted to show through the film. However, we are still waiting for certification, hope we will get it soon this time.”

The film’s director Kushan Nandy tweeted earlier on Wednesday: “FCAT clears ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ with eight minor, voluntary cuts. Despite Pahlaj Nihalani’s last letter to stop it. See you on August 25.”

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which was earlier headed by Nihalani, had demanded 48 cuts in the film, which has intimate scenes, to get ‘A’ certification.

The director also gave a “big thank you” to the ones who supported him “throughout the entire battle”.

Nawazuddin also tweeted saying: “Thanks FCAT for clearing ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ with minor voluntary cuts. The film will now release with its original flavour on August 25.”

A rustic drama, the film also features Bidita Bag.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one actor who has been appreciated and loved not just by his fans, but by the entire Bollywood fraternity also. His versatility has been remarkable – from acting like a total ‘dabang’ in action packed movies like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, to donning a comical and a goofy role in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. Not to forget his kickass performance in the movie ‘Kick’, where he definitely proved that he’s not less than any of the Khans, any day.

‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ is his upcoming action-thriller movie and is directed by Kushan Nandy. The trailer is out now and you can obviously predict that it’s going to be his one of the best we have seen so far. The movie is set out in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the accent and style surely reflects that. The trailer is filled with humorous dialogues and has some wild action romance. Also, before the release of the trailer, Nawaz apparently posted an image of him posing in Salman Khan style with a caption: “Jane kyun sab humko ‘Bae’ bulate hain… matlab #BesharamBabu , kal trailer lekar aayenge”. No wonder he’s a ‘bae’ of the entire nation.

The movie also stars Bengali actress Bidita Bag (the leading lady) who replaced Chitrangada Singh along with Divya Dutta  who is impressive as always. It’s set to hit the theaters on the 25th of August.
