The poster for Casablanca, a 1942 World War Two romantic drama, was one of Bill Gold’s first assignments. His design became iconic

Bill Gold, one of Hollywood’s best-known creators of film posters, has died aged 97. The veteran illustrator had a hand in more than 2,000 posters, including those for Casablanca, Dial M for Murder, and Dirty Harry, BBC reported on Monday. Gold began work at the film production company Warner Brothers in the 1940s. His task was to create artwork that didn’t give away a film’s storyline.

The poster for Casablanca, a 1942 World War Two romantic drama, was one of Gold’s first assignments. His design became iconic. Gold also designed the poster for Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller Dial M for Murder. He was a frequent collaborator with Clint Eastwood. He worked with the actor and director on dozens of films.

The poster used for the 1971 film Dirty Harry was said to illustrate the actor’s gritty persona. Although Gold officially retired in 2003, he continued to design posters from his Connecticut home. His last poster was for the 2011 Eastwood biopic J. Edgar, about the long-serving FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.

Gold’s design used a picture of Leonardo DiCaprio’s angry face as a likeness of Hoover.

In her role as the UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador in India, Dia Mirza has often voiced her concern over plastic pollution in the country. At the IIFA press conference in Delhi, she took her campaign — Beat Plastic Pollution — a step further as she found support from her friends in the film fraternity. Actors Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Kartik Aaryan and filmmaker Karan Johar joined hands with Mirza to bat for the cause.

Dia Mirza lauded her colleagues for adding their might to the movement, which, she believes, is the need of the hour. “Having celebrities lend their voice to the movement will help us tremendously in expanding the reach of the cause. It will help in influencing and inspiring millions of followers that these stars have. The enthusiasm that Ranbir, Shahid, Kartik and Karan showed in understanding the pertinence of the campaign, is exciting.”

Karan Johar turns 46 on May 25. The filmmaker might ring in his birthday with his close friends in New York this year

Karan Johar

Karan Johar turns 46 on May 25. The party-hearty filmmaker is known to throw the mother-of-all bashes at his home. Recall the Valentine’s Day party for singles this year? But those in the know say KJo might be flying to his favourite city, New York, to celebrate his big day with his band of besties, which includes Manish Malhotra, Shweta Bachchan Nanda and Kaajal Anand.

On the work front, Karan Johar is gearing up for the release of his upcoming anthalogy ‘Lust Stories’. Karan’s short film Ice-Cream features Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani and Neha Dhupia in lead roles. Lust Stories include four short stories; each of them has been directed by Karan Johar, Zoya Akthar, Dibakar Banerjee and Anurag Kashyap. The film Lust Stories will release on June 15 on Netflix.

Throwing some light on the concept of the film, he said, “We all know film is called ‘Lust Stories’ so the film is about love and lust. I think it’s exciting that we all decided on this theme together and thought that all directors would have an individual interpretation of love and lust so invariably when you have given choice between love and lust, more sensible people will choose lust only because it’s infinitely more exciting than love is.”

Karan said just like men, even women have the right to seek pleasure. “My film is about seeking pleasure. It’s also about the fact that it’s not just the man’s right to seek pleasure, it’s also a woman’s right.”

Alyssa Milano, 45, said that after suffering a miscarriage in 2011, she became pregnant with son Milo

Actress Alyssa Milano says she suffered from postpartum depression that led to her checking into a psychiatric ward. The actress penned an article for Time magazine discussing the suffering she endured following the birth of her son, reports dailymail.co.uk. “My generalized anxiety disorder was most likely triggered by my postpartum depression and my journey with mental illnesses began with my journey into motherhood,” she wrote.

Milano, 45, said that after suffering a miscarriage in 2011, she became pregnant with son Milo.

She said: “My miscarriage was heartbreaking, but this pregnancy was beautiful… Following this idyllic image of motherhood, I wrote a strict birth plan: no induction of labour, no pain medication and no c-sections.”

She was forced to deliver via C-section due to complications.

“That first night, after we returned from the hospital, I suffered my first anxiety attack,” she recalled.

“I felt like I failed as a mother, since I was not able to give birth vaginally or nourish him with the breast milk that had not come in yet.”

Although she recovered, she suffered another attack when Milo was struck down with a fever while she was preparing for a new show, reports dailymail.co.uk.

She said: “As we began filming, my anxiety worsened…Every day, I would drive to work and think about all the ways that Milo could die in the hands of his caretakers.”

The actress says she then sought professional help.

“One early morning, I went to the emergency room at 2:00 AM, asked for a psychiatrist and got help. I felt as though I had no choice: I asked to be committed; I stayed in a public psychiatric ward for three days.

“At last, I began to feel as if my pain was recognised, but it wasn’t easy.”

While Jackie Shroff feels immensely proud to be called “Tiger’s father”, neither does he advise much to his son regarding his film choices, nor is he worried about his career

Jackie Shroff
Jackie Shroff

With several films in the pipeline and one releasing in June, veteran actor Jackie Shroff is living one of the busiest phases of his life since the last few months. He says the equation with his directors, co-actors and level of sincerity, gives him the satisfaction to keep going. Jackie has been in the industry for three decades.

Asked about what keeps him going, he told IANS: “See, I live in the present. I believe that we only have today, this moment…so live it to the fullest. As a human being, I have so many relationships with my directors, co-actors, family, friends… people around me in short. Being sincere towards people gives me satisfaction.”

Coming from a humble background, Jackie believes that whether it is fame, money or becoming the actor in one of the world’s largest film industries, it just happened to him. Therefore, he takes everything lightly.

“I never dreamed to become an actor. I did not come from that background. So everything that people say I achieved is actually the gift of the Almighty. So I take them lightly.

“However, since our profession involves effort and money of others, if my film is earning enough money to bring profit to my producer, I am satisfied. Because people’s happiness gives me a certain kind of satisfaction. Then their (producer) happiness becomes mine,” said the father of popular young actor Tiger Shroff.

While Jackie feels immensely proud to be called “Tiger’s father”, neither does he advise much to his son regarding his film choices, nor is he worried about his career.

“The training for a little child to deal with the world started from the day I left him to the kindergarten school where he survived for hours without parents. I have seen him growing physically stronger with his extensive training.

“Tiger has grown up seeing success and failure before his eyes. So he knows to take the risks, reciprocate love and not to take failure to heart,” smiled the multiple award-winning actor.

Jackie will soon to be seen in the film Phamous, has shared the screen with actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Jimmy Shergill, Kay Kay Menon and Mahi Gill.

Phamous, releasing on June 1, is directed by a young director, Karan Lalit Butani. Was he confident about the project?

The Parinda fame actor said: “This is a good time in our films because of these talented young kids. Of course, they are great talent and I have faith in them.”

Apart from promoting the film, Jackie is busy shooting films like Paltan, Saaho, Firrkie, Paandi Muni and Tigmanshu Dhulia’s web series Criminal Justice.

How does he manage to play so many characters simultaneously?

Jackie said: “I am one of those actors who used to work for three films simultaneously. We are used to dealing with such a rushed schedule. I am pretty much capable of compartmentalising everything in the head.

“We are playing so many roles in real life in a day- I am different when I am giving a media interview from when I talk to my director. I am different when I talk to my children to when I talk to my wife. So instead of analysing too much, I just do it!”

Dangal actress Sanya Malhotra on how her equation with family and friends has remained unchanged despite her success

Sanya Malhotra
Sanya Malhotra

Dangal fame actress Sanya Malhotra, who currently has three films in her kitty, says her sense of achievement does not go to her head as her family and friends keep her grounded. She is currently busy working with National Award-winning filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj for his upcoming project “Chhuriyaan”, and has already finished shooting two films. She shot Badhaai Ho with Ayushmann Khurrana in her hometown Delhi.

On the experience, Sanya told IANS: “Delhi is the city I have been born and brought up in, so it holds a special place in my heart. This time when I visited the city for the shooting of my film, it was a very special feeling altogether.

“Dangal has changed our lives and when I was shooting on the streets of Gurgaon and NCR areas, it was like coming back home… However, the best part is that my friends and family keep me grounded.

“My equation has not changed with my close people. Neither my family nor my friends treat me like a ‘star’ and I love it that way.”

She says while shooting, she used to visit places like the Moolchand flyover in Delhi for the ‘chhole bhature’ along with the film’s director and Ayushmann.

“Nothing has changed in the Delhi girl in me. I think with success, you can stay grounded if only people around you make you feel that.”

Sanya has also finished shooting the film Photograph, directed by The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra. She features in it with Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

She says working with three different directors with a distinct approach towards storytelling taught her a lot on the job about her craft.

Being an outsider in the industry and not having formal knowledge in films, is it an easy task to choose the right script?

“I think I am pretty instinctive about choosing a script. If I like the story when I am hearing it, and as a performer, if my inner voice says, ‘Let’s do it, it will be fun’, I just go for it.

“I do not know much theory to analyse. I just see then how I can contribute to the script,” she said.

Sanya has loved Bhardwaj’s work.

“I loved Maqbool, which is one of my favourite film of Vishal sir. When ‘Haider'(2014) released and I went to watch the film in the theatre, I was blown away by the performance of everyone in the film.

“I remember telling my friend how I wish to work with this director who has the ability to bring out the best from every actor in his film,” said Sanya, who says the reality that her dream has come true within just a few years since then, is something that’s yet to sink in.
