While many people feel that the content on television is getting regressive with each passing day. But Neha Marda, known for shows like Balika Vadhu, Doli Armaano Ki and her latest gig in Zee TV show Piyaa Albela, doesn’t agree with this

Female actors are bigger heroes of the small screen, says Neha Marda. The actress is happy that the roles for women are “growing better and better” with time. “Small screen has made female actors bigger stars. Females are like the heroes of the show. The roles for women is growing better and better,” Neha told IANS.

While many people feel that the content on television is getting regressive with each passing day. But Neha, known for shows like Balika Vadhu, Doli Armaano Ki and her latest gig in Zee TV show Piyaa Albela, doesn’t agree with this.

“The kind of shows and issues that are portrayed is commendable. There is awareness because of TV. It is inspired by real life incidents. The fact that such shows get TRP is because these issues happen, we are just shooting it out,” she said.

The storyline of Piyaa Albela also touches upon the dowry issue.

Neha feels “lucky to be a part of shows that touch social issues like child marriage, domestic violence and now dowry”.

“It is important to show what is wrong in the society in order to correct it,” she added.

Be it Karan Wahi, Karan Singh Grover or Gurmeet Choudhary, several actors take a leap to big screen from television.

For Neha, Bollywood is not a deliberate effort.

“But, if I get a chance I don’t have anything specific in mind. I am an actor, I should be ready to do any role that comes my way. If I think I can do justice to the role, I will do it,” she added.

Actor Disha Patani says she enjoys playing dress up for traditional Indian weddings and she personally pays a lot of attention to make-up, accessories and hair colour during such occasions. “It is so much fun to dress up for Indian weddings. Not just the huge list of ceremonies to attend, but these days we also have different wedding themes — from grand traditional heritage set up to seaside affairs…we have a host of options.

“That also gives us a chance to dress up differently and experiment with our overall look. When it comes to creating a look, I pay a lot of attention to my make-up, accessories and hair colour,” said the “Baaghi 2” actress.

Sunil Grover seems to have let bygones be bygones as far as Kapil Sharma is concerned

Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma

After extending an olive branch to Kapil Sharma by wishing him good luck for his new show, his former The Kapil Sharma Show co-star Sunil Grover on Monday wished him — his “brother” — a happy birthday. “Happy Birthday Kapil Sharma. May God keep you healthy and happy brother. Love and wishes,” Sunil tweeted.

Last year, Sunil walked out of the hugely popular comedy entertainer The Kapil Sharma Show after Kapil allegedly verbally abused him and hit him with a shoe during a flight. Their professional split was widely talked about, and they were both quite vocal about their animosity.

Kapil’s show ran for a while after Sunil, who played Guthhi, walked out, but then he brought the curtains down on it.

He has recently made a comeback on the small screen with “Family Time With Kapil Sharma”, but Sunil is not a part of the show.

Before the show began, Sunil was asked on social media about why he is not a part of it.

He had replied: “There are more people who asked me the same question. But I did not get a call for this show. My phone number is the same.”

Kapil then responded by saying that has “nothing personal” against Sunil.

“Please do not spread rumours that I did not call you… He is lying. I called him 100 times and sent my people to his home. Even I went to his home to meet him for the show but now I will not let anybody take advantage on my name. Enough is enough,” Kapil said.

Karan Johar’s one-year-old daughter Roohi recently called him papa for the first time. The filmmaker tweeted, “She said papa. It’s time for my mini meltdown (sic).”

Karan Johar, who is a proud father of twins Roohi and Yash, says just because he is a father now, doesn’t mean he will make a children’s film. Karan made his directorial debut in 1998 with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji-starrer “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”. The first half of the blockbuster focussed on friends on a college campus.

Years later, he made “Student of the Year” that revolved around students played by Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. What about a children’s film?

“Just because I am a father, I don’t think I will be making a children’s film. I will make those films that have appealing stories. It is always story dependent. I produce those films that are entirely dependent on my intuition… when I read it or synopsis that I fall in love with and want to take it further,” Karan told IANS.

Meanwhile, KJo caught up with his Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) actor Fawad Khan in Dubai recently. Designer buddy Manish Malhotra shared pictures on social media.

Harshvardhan Kapoor kicks off prep on Olympic medalist’s biopic in London, adopts lean frame to showcase shooter’s teenage days

Harshvardhan Kapoor

Having chosen a biopic for his third film, Harshvardhan Kapoor is aware that recreating Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra’s journey will be a tall order. The biopic, we hear, will trace Bindra’s transition from adolescence to adulthood as he trains to be a professional shooter. Stationed in London, Kapoor has already begun prepping for the role — he is working on achieving a lean physique to portray Bindra during his teenage years.

Abhinav Bindra
Abhinav Bindra

Reveals a source, “While a portion of the film will see Harsh as 17-year-old Bindra competing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, it will then progress to chart his growth as he bags the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Since the film traces his 18-year journey, Harsh will be required to lose weight first to look like a 17-year-old and then put on a few kilos to ape Bindra’s look in his late 20s and early 30s.” The insider adds that prosthetics and VFX will be employed to make his physical transformation seamless.

Harshvardhan Kapoor is currently shedding the kilos to attain a physique with zero per cent body fat. “We have designed a 90-minute workout that is a combination of free weights, sprints on a treadmill and functional training. This is in addition to cardio, weight training and Vrikshasana [a form of yoga that Bindra recommends],” says one of the actor’s trainers.

He adds that the youngster is also honing his mental skills. “We are working towards helping him get a higher attention span. The average attention span of an adult is 15 minutes. Harsh needs to have a 60-minute attention span. This will help him in perfecting the nuances.”

Rumoured to be upset over non-payment of dues, John Abraham terminates contract with co-producers of Parmanu; Prernaa Arora claims she is seeking legal recourse

John Abraham
John Abraham

Rumours of all not being well between John Abraham and KriArj Entertainment, the co-producers of his film – Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran, have been doing the rounds for the past few months. Now, it has been learnt that tired of the film’s release being incessantly delayed, Abraham has terminated his contract with the studio and intends to release it under his banner, JA Entertainment. A trade notice has been issued on the subject.

Prernaa Arora
Prernaa Arora

It may be recalled that the movie, which revolves around India’s nuclear bomb test explosions conducted in Pokhran in 1998, was originally slated to release on December 8 last year. However, the release was then deferred to February, only to be pushed further to March 2. Since Prernaa Arora’s [of KriArj Entertainment] co-production Pari was releasing on the same day, Parmanu was postponed once again to April 6. Finally, it was to hit screens on May 11.

A source revealed that besides being upset about the constant change in plans, John Abraham was also unhappy with the non-payment of dues by the co-producers. “The constant delay has been a worrying factor for John. He has also been having creative conflicts with the producers as there is no clarity on the promotional strategy. That aside, Prernaa’s company had not cleared their dues,” said the source.

Arora, on her part, claimed that Abraham hasn’t fulfilled his end of the bargain, and termed the termination “illegal”. Stating that Zee Studios are KriArj’s partners in the project, she said, “JA Ent has kept making unreasonable demands for money from us, which are outside the scope of their initial understanding with us. This has made it clear that they are trying to defraud us by attempting to wriggle out of a legally binding contract. (sic)” Arora added that they are taking legal recourse.

Esha Gupta collaborates with Delhi NGO to provide funds for appointing teachers, improving facilities for schools in Bijnor

Esha Gupta
Esha Gupta

A series of entrepreneurial endeavours behind her, Esha Gupta has consistently been working towards upgrading the lives of the less privileged. After having announced the creation of an academy that will look into the requirement of Indian footballers struggling with monetary concerns, Gupta has now adopted two villages in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district to promote education.

Esha Gupta admits that the project is ambitious, but is prepared to devote her attention towards it. “There will be logistical issues, but I will personally look into it. Everyone has the right to education. There are many children in small towns who want to study and make a meaningful career, but don’t have the required amenities. If I can help them, I will feel privileged.”

The project, which marks Gupta’s collaboration with Delhi-based NGO, Pehel, will see her provide financial support to schools for the provision of basic amenities. Even though the actor hasn’t visited the town, her team has helped her zero in on the villages that require her attention. “There are three schools across two villages that we are supporting. Either they are far away from the primary residential area, or simply lack basic facilities. In both cases, they needed to be upgraded,” she says.

A source close to the actor tells mid-day, “Esha will provide funds for the appointment of teachers in the villages. The NGO will shortlist qualified teachers, who will be deputed to the locations. While Gupta will also enable the schools in purchasing projectors, the NGO will also raise money to build better toilets and open a local library where the children can study.”

The project will kick-off this month, with work on her football academy commencing in June. “Esha will travel to Bijnor soon to look into the nitty gritties.”

Sunny Leone on why she feels she received brickbats earlier in her career

Sunny Leone
Sunny Leone

Hate mails and criticism were part of what Sunny Leone faced much before she made the transition from an adult film star to Bollywood. She says the brickbats didn’t come her way because she is in India, but due to the mindset of the society as a whole. Sunny’s life story is set to be unveiled in an upcoming biopic Karenjit Kaur – The Untold Story of Sunny Leone.

“Many people have the misconception that people started criticising me when I decided to come to India, but that is not true. I started getting hate mails and criticism when I was around 21 years old.

“So it has nothing to do with the country, but society in general. That was the first time I faced real hatred,” Sunny told IANS in an interview.

The show Karenjit Kaur, which will soon start streaming on the OTT platform ZEE5, revolves around the journey of Sunny, who was born as Karenjit Kaur in a middle class Sikh family in Canada.

It will trace her transition from being a little girl to becoming an adult film actress and from there to her rise in Bollywood.

“Like many families, there are some problems in our family too. There is love, hate, emotional moments in all our lives, but our parents protected my brother and me from all the negativity, as much as they could.

“But at the age of 21, when you see people are saying really nasty things about you, it affects you so badly… I was vulnerable and broken from within emotionally,” said the actress, whose sensational dance moves have added glamour to songs like “Baby doll”, “Laila main laila” and “Pink lips”.

On how her parents dealt with the hate that came her way, Sunny said: “Reverse psychology always happens and that was definitely the case with me and my parents. They were thinking that if they forcefully stop me, I might just gain more curiosity and then I might not return from that world.

“Of course, I went to a different direction that my parents did not want me to… But I want to say that I love my life the way it is and everything happens for a reason. I have no complaints.”

Sunny’s big ticket to India came with a season of Bigg Boss, after which she landed her Bollywood debut with “Jism 2”.

Since then, the actress has appeared in several films like Ragini MMS 2, Ek Paheli Leela, Mastizaade, One Night Stand and Tera Intezaar.

She has also appeared in youth television reality shows like MTV Splitsvilla, Box Cricket League: Season 2 and Man vs. Wild with Sunny Leone.

Unapologetic about the choices she has made in life, Sunny says she is glad a show like Karenjit Kaur is an opportunity for her to express herself.

“When the producers of the show came to us almost a year ago, they wanted to unveil the real me. There is a curiosity about my life and there is a person who is not what you see on the internet.

“I know I could have kept my personal story to myself, but you see, through this show, I am actually getting a chance to express myself, my real self,” said the young mother of three children.

Sunny and her husband Daniel Weber become parents of three children – Asher, Noah and Nisha. They adopted Nisha, and their twin sons were born via surrogacy.

She wants them to enjoy the freedom of choice when they grow up.

“Adulthood is a phase where people become rebels at times and one cannot do anything with that, can we? As a mother, I want them to be good people who do not hurt anyone physically and emotionally.

“My kids should not cheat anyone, they should not steal from people… I may or may not agree with their choices in life but as individuals that is their choice. I think all I want as a mother is my children should not go through such hatred from the society that I faced,” she added.
