Assamese actor Utpal Das says he would like to work in Bollywood but only with challenging roles. “I’m interested to work in Bollywood. I prefer roles which challenge my credibility as an actor to cater to a wider audience of the entertainment industry,” Utpal told IANS.

Utpal, who has featured in films like Dhan Kuberor Dhon, Raamdhenu, Borolar Ghor Durjon and Konwarpurar Konwar, feels “there is abundance of talented people in the North East region who are deprived of the acknowledgment they deserve due to various reasons”. “This is an unfortunate case but with keen interest and proper channelisation of talent management groups or bodies, this aspect could be changed of talent growth and facilitating the right talent for the desired requirement,” he added.

The actor got associated with Pantaloons for Bihu Xubhojatra. The fashion brand, from Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd, celebrated 10 years of opening its first store at DT Tower, Guwahati by thanking the people of Guwahati for their love and support with a 2.5 km long Bihu Xubojatra earlier this month. Utpal said the event was one of its kind.

Ileana D’Cruz finally broke the silence on her pregnancy rumours

Ileana D'Cruz
Ileana D’Cruz

For a while now, there has been speculation about Ileana D’Cruz being in the family way. What fuelled the buzz were the pictures she was sharing on social media. The Raid actor was seen in loose, flowy outfits and netizens even noticed a baby bump in one of the pictures she posted.

She posted a picture of hers, captioning it “Inhale the good sh*t— —Exhale the bullsh*t.” Take a look:

The actor later took to social media to finally end the chatter. She wrote, “Not pregnant” and posted another pretty picture of hers.

We hope Ileana also tells us whether she is hitched or not to Australian beau, Andrew Kneebone, who she referred to as ‘hubby’ on social media earlier in the year.

She has always kept her guard up when it comes to personal life and has time and again made it clear out there that she does not want her private space to be a part of “rubbish gossip columns”. She said, “It [my personal life] is sacred for me. I don’t want it to be served on a platter in a gossip column. I don’t want it to be part of such sections in a newspaper. It’s an important part of my life, and means a lot to me. I do not want it to be served on a platter in a gossip column. I don’t want it to be part of this gossip section in the newspaper. It’s a very important, sacred part of my life – and it means a lot to me.”

The “Raid” actress said that there are many layers to her personal life and “people will end up reading so many skewed versions of it if I talk about it”.

Pulkit Samrat to quench the thirst of taxi, autorickshaw drivers by providing bottled water, free of cost, at signals; approaches RTO for permission

Pulkit Samrat
Pulkit Samrat

With the sweltering heat offering little respite to Mumbaikars, Pulkit Samrat is determined to come to the aid of those who are constantly on the go. Having been witness to the exhaustion that drivers of autorickshaws and taxis face while ferrying passengers, the actor plans to make water readily available to them.

Pulkit Samrat, it is learnt, will rope in people to be stationed at select signals in the city and offer bottled water to drivers. In order to make the process seamless, he is also connecting with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to procure the necessary permission. Talking about what inspired him to partake in the endeavour, Samrat says, “While travelling one day, I saw a fair number of rickshaw drivers struggling to cope with the heat. I could offer the water I had in my car to a few, but realised that many more could benefit if I did so on a wider scale.” While he hasn’t decided the locations in the city that his team will be stationed at, he intends to immediately start the practice at signals in Bandra, Andheri, Mahim, Juhu and Oshiwara.

His team is working towards understanding both, the number of taxis and rickshaws registered with the RTO and the budget that a venture of this nature will require. However, he isn’t perturbed about the cost.

“It’s just water. How expensive can it be,” he questions. At a few places in Bandra, Samrat says his team has already sprung into gear by offering drivers and traffic police constables water since the past few days. His family members in Delhi have also been involved in the activity on a small scale. “We will continue to do so throughout summer. I will promote this concept on social media so that more people can participate in making their work easier.”

Yo Yo Honey Singh on his admirers lauding his comeback songs from Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety

Yo Yo Honey Singh
Yo Yo Honey Singh

A popular notion that exists about musicians in the Hindi film industry is that they have a short shelf life. But Yo Yo Honey Singh defies it. The Punjabi composer-singer, who was a rage in the Bollywood music fraternity between 2012 and 2015, stopped churning out music three years ago. While his fans wondered why their favourite artiste wasn’t releasing songs or performing live, in late 2016, Singh attributed the sabbatical to his struggle with bipolar disorder.

He continued to keep away from the limelight and media. But his comeback vehicle, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (SKTKS), was testimony of the fact that neither time, nor the growth of other Punjabi artistes, could smother the love that laces Singh and his fans.

In an exclusive chat with mid-day, he thanks his fans for their support and discusses future projects.

Edited excerpts from the interview:

Your comeback songs, Dil Chori and Chhote Chhote Peg, have crossed 300 million views on YouTube. How did you manage this despite being away from the hurly burly?
I feel blessed. My fans have been my biggest support. The unconditional bond that we share isn’t defined by a timeline. I am thankful to Bhushan Kumar for giving me a chance to contribute to SKTKS’s soundtrack. I love the way it has been shot.

During the time that you were away from the spotlight, did you work on your craft?
I was never away from work. In fact, as an artiste, the downtime served as a learning experience for me. Over the last couple of years, I have only grown closer to music.

What did you miss the most when you were away?
The euphoria of performing on stage and interacting with the audience live is what I miss the most.

Do you plan to hit the stage anytime soon?
I am taking life one step at a time. While I have resumed recording in the studio, I will hit the stage soon. Right now, I want to empower myself with more music that I can take to my fans when I go on stage.

What will we see more of – film songs or singles?
The world is my oyster. Right now, I am imbibing international tunes. I am creating both, singles and film songs, on a daily basis. Let’s see what releases first.

Many new Punjabi artistes have earned a name in Bollywood. Do you fear the competition?
Not at all. I feel all musicians who create music and deliver hits are inspiring each other to do better work.

Salman Khan is accused of running his Toyota Land Cruiser over people sleeping on a sidewalk outside a bakery in Mumbai’s Bandra on September 28, 2002

Salman Khan

A Mumbai court on Saturday cancelled the bailable warrant against Bollywood actor Salman Khan in connection with 2002 hit and run case. The bailable warrant was cancelled after Salman’s bodyguard Shera stood as his surety.

Last week, the court issued a bailable warrant against Salman as he did not complete the procedure of providing surety on the past two dates. However, the bailable warrant stayed later after the lawyer had assured that the actor would complete the procedure.

On October last year, the Supreme Court heard the plea filed by the Maharashtra government, challenging the acquittal of Salman in regard to the case. In December 2015, the Bombay High Court acquitted Khan of all criminal charges on account of lack of substantial evidence in the case.

The Bollywood actor is accused of running his Toyota Land Cruiser over people sleeping on a sidewalk outside a bakery in Mumbai’s Bandra on September 28, 2002. One labourer died, while four others were injured in the accident.

Kriti Sanon, while praising the move, stressed on the need to fast-track rape cases, so that justice could be served to the victims in a proper manner

Divya Khosla

The Centre has given its nod to an ordinance to amend the existing Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act, allowing courts to award death penalty to those convicted of raping minors, and Bollywood is all praise for it. At the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Awards 2018 function, former actress and producer-director Divya Khosla also spoke in favour of the ordinance.

“I feel that parents should give good education to their children. Our Prime Minister is being cursed by people, which is not right. Parents also have a duty to understand their responsibility. Also, I feel women are considered very strong. But there are such people who consider women as physically weak. Hopefully, the law will serve as a deterrent for them,” Khosla said.

Filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, who made her debut with the 2016 hit comedy-drama ‘Nil Battey Sannata,’ backed the Centre’s move. “It is a good thing that such laws are being created so that all men should respect women. But on the contrary, every law has good and bad aspects. There is also a need to consider this as well,” she said.

Calling for social change, she urged other filmmakers to throw light on sexual assault issues, as it was necessary to change the mentality of the society. “I have always made films for social change. ‘Nil Battey Sannata’ is one of them. I believe that in the future, if necessary, we will make such films by taking a social change in the country,” Tiwari added.

Actor Shahid Kapoor, who won the Best Actor Award for the film ‘Padmaavat’ at Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Awards, also welcomed the central government’s move to award death penalty to child rapists.

“A very harsh punishment is required to create a certain mindset in the people who even think of such horrifying crime. It is important to put something very strong as an example for them. I am very happy that the issue has been brought up. People cannot ignore it now since wrong things are happening every time,” the star said.

Actress Shilpa Shetty also lauded the Centre’s move as well, saying, “I think it (ordinance of POCSO Act) is a good step. People who do such horrifying crime should be punished in the harshest way possible. The crime itself is so brutal.”

Actress Aditi Rao Hydari too voiced her support of the Centre’s move to punish child rapists and said, “I am very happy that such a step has been taken by the government. It is a victory for every girl and her parents in this country. It is a great day to get this news.”

Actress Kriti Sanon, while praising the move, stressed on the need to fast-track rape cases, so that justice could be served to the victims in a proper manner. Terming the crime as “animalistic and horrible,” she said, “Really glad that such a strong punishment would be given to such people. I am really happy that it has finally happened. I feel angry whenever I hear about such cases. But we have to fast-track such cases. I hope the government would address the issue for ensuring speedy justice to the victims.”

Actress Tamannah Bhatia slammed the rise in crimes against women as “disgusting.” “These are so disgusting and are heinous crimes. The idea of rape is itself not good. I am happy about the strong punishment under the amended law. Rape is a crime that should be given the most brutal punishment,” Tamannah asserted.

Meanwhile, veteran actress and prominent talk show hostess Simi Garewal welcomed the Centre’s move and urged the government to take strict action against the offenders. “This step is really good. I am unable to sleep at night when I hear about such cases. I don’t know what is happening in our country. This is not our India. The government should not only punish the guilty, but they should be publicly punished, so as to instill fear among the people,” she asserted.

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday approved the promulgation of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, for effective deterrence against the commission of rape, thereby instilling a sense of security among women and especially young girls in the country.

Taking cognisance of the recent incidents of rape in various parts of the country, the Cabinet approved an ordinance to be promulgated to provide for stringent punishment for perpetrators of rape particularly of girls below 16 years, and the death penalty to be awarded to rapists of girls below 12 years of age.

The minimum punishment in case of rape of women was increased from the rigorous imprisonment of 7 to 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment. In case of rape of a girl under 16 years, the minimum punishment was increased from 10 to 20 years, extendable to life imprisonment.

The Cabinet also decided to put in place a number of measures for speedy investigation and trial of rape cases. It was prescribed that the time limit for investigation of all rape cases had to be mandatorily completed within two months. Furthermore, the time limit for completion of the trial of all rape cases was ascertained for two months.

The Cabinet also provided for a six-month time limit for disposal of appeals in rape cases. In terms of gangrape, the Cabinet stated that the punishment for the gangrape of a girl under 16 years of age would invariably be imprisonment for the rest of the life of the convict.

Among other provisions of the ordinance, the Cabinet prescribed that there would be no provision for anticipatory bail for a person accused of rape or gang rape of a girl under 16 years. It was also provided that the court would have to give a 15-day notice to the Public Prosecutor and representative of the victim before deciding bail applications in the aforementioned category.

In order to give effect to the legal provisions and to improve the capacity of the criminal justice system to deal with rape cases, the Cabinet stated that new fast-track courts would be set up in consultation with the states/Union Territories (UTs) and high courts. It also mandated the creation of new posts of public prosecutors and related infrastructure in consultation with states and union territories.

The Cabinet also provided for special forensic kits for rape cases to all police stations and hospitals, forensic labs in each state and union territory and dedicated manpower for investigation in a time bound manner.

Furthermore, the National Crime Records Bureau was directed to maintain a national database and profile of sexual offenders. This data will be regularly shared with states/UTs for tracking, monitoring and investigation, including verification of antecedents by police.

The Cabinet also stated that the present scheme of One Stop Centres for assistance to rape victims would be extended to all districts in the country.

Soon after, the Centre submitted its report while responding to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, seeking the maximum sentence of the death penalty to those offenders involved in the rape and brutal murder of children between the age group of 0 to 12.

The Supreme Court’s three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra along with Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, fixed the matter for further hearing on April 27.
