With the sweltering heat offering little respite to Mumbaikars, Pulkit Samrat is determined to come to the aid of those who are constantly on the go. Having been witness to the exhaustion that drivers of autorickshaws and taxis face while ferrying passengers, the actor plans to make water readily available to them.

Pulkit Samrat, it is learnt, will rope in people to be stationed at select signals in the city and offer bottled water to drivers. In order to make the process seamless, he is also connecting with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to procure the necessary permission. Talking about what inspired him to partake in the endeavour, Samrat says, “While travelling one day, I saw a fair number of rickshaw drivers struggling to cope with the heat. I could offer the water I had in my car to a few, but realised that many more could benefit if I did so on a wider scale.” While he hasn’t decided the locations in the city that his team will be stationed at, he intends to immediately start the practice at signals in Bandra, Andheri, Mahim, Juhu and Oshiwara.

His team is working towards understanding both, the number of taxis and rickshaws registered with the RTO and the budget that a venture of this nature will require. However, he isn’t perturbed about the cost.

“It’s just water. How expensive can it be,” he questions. At a few places in Bandra, Samrat says his team has already sprung into gear by offering drivers and traffic police constables water since the past few days. His family members in Delhi have also been involved in the activity on a small scale. “We will continue to do so throughout summer. I will promote this concept on social media so that more people can participate in making their work easier.”

Actor Pulkit Samrat recently wooed people’s hearts with his amazing comic timing, acting chops and his romantic avatar in Fukrey Returns. The handsome hunk yet another laughter riot, Veerey Ki Wedding with Kriti Kharbanda and Jimmy Sheirgill released last week. Giving some insights into the film and how his personal life grabs more space in the news than his work, and also about always being compared with Salman Khan, the 34-year old bares it all in this candid interview with mid-day online.

Was it difficult to play Veer’s character or you just have that Romeo in you and it translates onscreen?
Yeah, the ‘chichora’ part was really fun and the chemistry shared between Geet (Kriti Kharbanda’s character) and Veer is very volatile. Geet is a very strong headed girl and also has a mind of her own and Veer on the other hand is also a very talkative boy. He helps a lot of people by hook or by crook, but mostly by crook. So, when such chemistry is there, it’s kind of nice to play it on screen. This was for the first time that I am working with Kriti and it was a fabulous experience. She is very natural on camera and when you get to work with an actor of that calibre it becomes very easy for you. The give and take in terms of acting becomes interesting.

Was it difficult to break the ice with Kriti?
Not at all. Both of us connected on the Delhi factor because even she hails from the capital. I didn’t know this until I saw her having food. I thought to myself, “Yeh toh dilli vaalon ki tarah khaati hai yaar.” (She eats like a Delhiate) and then she said yes that she was born in Delhi. And we got it all out in our characters in this film.

Now that we are talking about a wedding film, do you personally believe in the concept of marriage?
I don’t believe in the concept of marriage. It is just for the society – a legal certificate to show the society. Love is the base of every marriage and I believe in the concept of love, yes, if there’s love that escalates to the wedding then it’s a different thing. Going ahead if I fall in love then let’s see how it goes ahead.

You’ve played romantic heroes and done comedy capers, aren’t you afraid of being typecast?
No… I’ve done Fukrey which is a slapstick comedy and a rom-com. I’ve done Sanam Re. So, I think I’ve been doing different kinds of roles, so there’s no fear of being typecast.

Do you think romancing onscreen is easier than off-screen?
Romancing is extremely difficult on screen because you are surrounded by so many people, a camera zooming onto you. And the smell of cow dung, mosquitoes on the sets, it gets very difficult to get the romantic expressions. But at the end, it’s because of these things that it translates beautifully on screen.

A lot has been said and written about your personal life, does it affect you?
Yeah, it does but you know workplace is the best place to divert your mind. It’s a different world altogether. Where you are enjoying your craft and are away from all the hustle and bustle.

You’ve got a good physique and people see the younger version of Salman Khan in you, so what kind of equation do you really share with him?
The phenomenon of comparing has always been there. He’s a good human being and people love him. Although I love him and he loves me too, I want to create a mark of my won and wouldn’t want to get my personality and talent to get overshadowed.

Your views on celebrating Women’s Day.
I hate this gender discrimination. Why a day to celebrate them… We should always celebrate it… They are a creation which is very unique. Why one day for men and women day? But, it’s good that people are changing their mentality and have gone ahead. It’s commendable to see slight changes.

Three years after his divorce from Shweta Rohira, actor Pulkit Samrat says he believes in love but is unsure if he still has faith in the institution of marriage. Pulkit had married long-time girlfriend Shweta Rohira in November 2014 but they split a year later. When asked whether he still has faith in the institution of marriage, Pulkit told reporters, “I don’t know. In love, definitely (I have faith), but I don’t know if that certificate means something right now where I stand. So I don’t have a comment on that. But maybe later…” The actor was speaking at the trailer launch of his film, “Veerey Ki Wedding”, here today. The

“Fukrey” actor said being single, he would now grab unconditional love from wherever it is coming from, including his pet. “Someone asked me yesterday, how are you going to celebrate this Valentine’s Day as a single (man). I said I’d rather be with my dog because that’s a hundred per cent, sure-shot guaranteed affair that’ll last forever, nothing else will. Wherever you get unconditional love, just grab it.” The film also stars Kriti Kharbanda, who most recently featured in “Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana” opposite Rajkummar Rao. The title bares an uncanny resemblance to the forthcoming Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer “Veerey Di Wedding”.

Pulkit said there should be no confusion between the two films. “There were five Bhagat Singh films, which released together. They had a similar plot as well. Here, only the title is similar. The makers had the title already and then the other one got announced… Both are different films.” The film is scheduled to be released on March 9.

Pulkit Samrat

Pulkit Samrat’s temper tantrums and his antics has drawn the wrath of the shutterbugs in the city. Pulkit, had gotten in several fights with the photographers be it at events or at the airport. He had even got into a scuffle and several verbal spats with them.

This has led to the shutterbugs giving him a cold shoulder, now that he is promoting his film, ‘Fukrey Returns. According to a story in DNA, “Recently, when he posed at an event, barely a couple of shutterbugs clicked him. “His arrogance has led to the lensmen not clicking him at the airport too,” says a source.

The ‘Fukrey Returns’ trailer depicts how Richa Chadha, playing the notorious Bholi Punjaban, gets her revenge from Ali Fazal (Zafar), Pulkit Samrat (Hunny), Varun Sharma (Choocha) and Manjot Singh (Lali), who had plotted against her in the first part. The sequel retains the quirky plot line of Choocha getting weird dreams and Hunny being able to spin a sure-shot winning lottery number from it.
