Arjun Kapoor could reprise the character played by Nivin Pauly in the original

Arjun KapoorArjun Kapoor

The coming-of-age romantic Malayalam film Premam (2015) is being remade in Hindi. Arjun Kapoor has emerged as the top contender to reprise the character played by Nivin Pauly in the original.

Though the makers have not made any announcement, those in the know say Arjun is gung-ho about the film, which traces the love life of a person from adolescence to old age. Arjun is also said to be part of the Hindi version of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy (2017). Is he the go-to actor for South remakes?

Arjun has been filming for his next Namaste England in which he reunites with Ishaqzaade co-star Parineeti Chopra. They will also share the screen in Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. The release of Namaste England, directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, has been preponed for October 19 during the Dussehra weekend. The sequel to 2007’s hit Namastey London was scheduled to be released in December.

Owing to the smooth shooting schedule, the makers have decided to release the movie earlier to the planned date, a press release said. The team of Namaste England has been filming in never-seen-before locations of Punjab. They recently wrapped up their last shooting schedule. The film traces the journey of two young individuals from Punjab to England.

Two weeks ago, Arjun Kapoor came to his half-sister Jahnvi Kapoor’s defence when an online portal splashed her unflattering photographs in an offensive way. Arjun retweeted a news portal’s post about Janhvi sporting a “sexy dress” as she reached Arjun’s home. She was seen sporting a white cotton dress with a low back. His post read, “You know what, f**k you man, f**k you as a website for highlighting or bringing it to anyone’s attention and it is shameful that your eye would go searching for something like this. Shame on you… This is how our country looks at young women. Yet another shining example. Ashamed by this (sic).”

The bash was attended by the music show’s host Aditya Narayan among others

Aditya Narayan and Jayas Kumar

Jayas Kumar, the wonderkid from Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs, turned seven over the weekend. His birthday gifts included the launch of his single and a website. The bash was attended by the music show’s host Aditya Narayan among others. Neha Kakkar, who was Jayas’s favourite judge, wished him on social media by writing, “I love you.” Jayas was five when he was part of the reality show.

Speaking of Aditya Narayan, the singer-host said in an interview with an online news postal last November that entertaining people is not an easy job to do. Aditya is currently seen in Entertainment Ki Raat, which includes entertaining segments like stand-up comedy, rapping, drop the mic and celebrity chat segment. Asked about it, Aditya told the portal, “Entertaining people is one of the hardest jobs to do. It requires a great team effort, time and dedication.” He is joined by artistes like Ravi Dubey, Dipika Kakar, Karan Wahi and Raghu Ram on the show.

“It is a wonderful concept. The focus is not just on comedy but entertainment in general. It’s a wholesome family entertainment show. People can watch it after coming back from work and unwind for an hour. We have a bunch of entertaining people (in the show). We gelled well,” said Aditya Narayan.

“I have known them, but the nature of the industry is such that we get to interact more with the people whom we are working with. I have known these people for a while now. It’s only when we are getting together that we end up spending so much time together. They are really good at what they do. I respect them,” he added.

Asked about his interest in doing non-fiction shows, he said: “I am primarily a musician. Any reality show doesn’t take much time to shoot. Also, the money is good.” When asked when singers act, they generally take up films related to music. Why not do something different, he was quizzed. To this Aditya replied, “Do you expect someone like Tiger Shroff, who is doing so well in action films, to do a comic caper? No, right? It will be a good change, but nobody will watch the film. People will only criticise and laugh at him. Then trolls will happen and people will say he is terrible.”

Aditya Narayan is the son of playback singer Udit Narayan and Deepa Narayan. He is an actor, television host, composer and singer. He acted in the films Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai, Pardes and Rangeela as a child artiste and made his debut in a leading role with the 2010 film Shaapit.

Nobleman is an adaptation of the play Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare and will be set around a posh boarding school

Kunal Kapoor

Actor Kunal Kapoor will be next seen in debutante Vandana Kataria’s drama Nobleman, which tackles the issue of bullying. The film is an adaptation of the play Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare and will be set around a posh boarding school. It deals with adolescent issues, coming of age and bullying in today’s world.

Kapoor will play the role of a drama teacher, with a mysterious past, in the film. As a teacher, he has radical ideas on bringing about change in education and schooling. “This is a film I feel very proud to be associated with. Both Vandana and the script, are unique and have something important to say. What drew me to this script was, that it touches upon themes, very few films have had the courage to address. And after doing a version of Macbeth in ‘Veeram’, it also gave me a chance to dive into another Shakespeare classic, Merchant of Venice,” Kapoor said in a statement.

The film will be completely shot in idyllic Mussorie and will also feature actors Ali Haji, Mohammad Ali Mir, Muskaan Jaferi and Shaan Grover. The film is produced by Yoodlee Films. Kataria, a National Institute of Design graduate, has worked as a production designer in many films. In 2008, she won a Filmfare award for movie Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye.

“Bullying is a dysfunctional addiction that society is slowly but surely coming to terms with and insisting that it is no longer acceptable. Noblemen gives us a glimpse inside the bully’s and the bullied person’s minds. Having studied and lived in a boarding school, I know how important it is to want to fit in and how easy it is for bullying to flourish. This film is a dramatic representation of that world, its issues, adolescence and the loss of innocence,” Kataria said.

Aaron Eckhart and Courtney Eaton will be portraying the lead characters in the real-time thriller “Live!”. The film will be helmed by Steven C Miller from a script by Jeremy Drysdale, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The story follows a disgraced cop (to be played Eckhart) who is racing against time to find the police commissioner’s kidnapped daughter after killing her abductor.

With the young woman having only 80 minutes to live and a crazed killer after him, the cop has to team up with an online reporter (Eaton) who wants to broadcast the chase live. It will be produced by Myles Nestel, Craig Chapman, and Skip Williamson along with Martin Sprock, Chris Tuffin and Renee.

The project had been stuck for several years due to issues in scheduling, financing and a shift in directors. The film is expected to start shooting in Alabama next month.

After CBFC demanded several cuts, Omerta director Hansal Mehta glad with the reviewed decision

After the Central Board of Film Certification demanded “a series of cuts” in Rajkummar Rao’s Omerta – which is based on British terrorist of Pakistani descent Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh’s life – director Hansal Mehta was forced to knock on the door of the Revising Committee.

“I had gone to the Board asking for an A certificate, but the Examining Committee demanded a series of cuts. I even lost track of the number. The Revising Committee was understanding. They only asked for two edits,” says Mehta. He reveals that one of the demanded cuts involves a scene showcasing full frontal nudity. “It’s a violent sex sequence which they found too rough for general viewing. The scene is not about sex, but aims at depicting the mental state of my protagonist.”

The second sequence, he adds, is one that showcases the protagonist urinating in prison while the national anthem plays in the background. “That, apparently, is nconstitutional. So we had to let it go,” says Mehta, adding that the cuts don’t hamper the narrative.

Blast on location in Wai as elaborate war sequence goes horribly wrong, cast and crew of period drama escape unhurt

Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar has been shooting for Kesari, which is based on the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi, in Wai over the past four months. The unit of the period drama was in for a shock yesterday when a massive fire broke out on the location in the early evening.

A source says, “Anurag Singh [director] was filming a war sequence on location when one of the bombs, being used for the scene, exploded. Within a matter of seconds, the entire set was gutted. Most of the lighting equipment and cameras were lost in the fire. Fortunately, not a single person of the 100-member-strong unit was hurt.”

Kumar, who usually shoots through the day in Wai and flies back to Mumbai on his chartered chopper in the evenings, had left for the day around 3.30 pm. “None of the primary actors were required for the shoot. Akshay filmed his portions by late afternoon and then the director proceeded to can the war sequence with the additional artistes,” adds the source.

With the set now destroyed in the fire, the team has the challenge of recreating the Gulistan Fort — one of the key sites of the battle. “Since a 10-day shoot is yet to be covered, a new set will need to be recreated. Though it’s too early to say, the makers are now considering building the set in Film City in Mumbai.”

Confirming the news, the police officials of Satara said, “The fire department of Bhuinj and those of surrounding areas were alerted [about the incident]. By evening, the fire was brought under control.”

As teaser of Sanju receives appreciation, Ranbir Kapoor on how he was hesitant to take on Sanjay Dutt’s role for biopic

With the teaser of Sanju having released yesterday, Ranbir Kapoor’s seamless transformation into Sanjay Dutt has been appreciated by his fans and naysayers alike. While director Rajkumar Hirani was convinced that only Kapoor could do justice to the multi-dimensional character, the actor revealed that he was initially hesitant about taking up the role.

“When Raju sir [Hirani] told me about this film, my first instinct was that I won’t be able to do this. I felt I didn’t have the courage and the acting chops to pull off this role. This is not just an acting gig for me. I took up this film as an opportunity to be part of a story of someone whom I consider my icon,” said Ranbir Kapoor of the project that will arguably go on to become one of the landmark films of his career.

Although he knew Dutt socially, Kapoor said the script brought to the fore the different facets of the star that he was otherwise unaware about. “As a family friend, I have always known a different Sanjay Dutt. As his fan, I knew him as a style icon, knew his mannerisms and his swag. But when I read the script, it shocked me. From his drug [abuse] to his terrorism controversy, from his equation with his father [Sunil Dutt] to how the passing away of his mother [Nargis Dutt] affected him, everything shocked me.”

The biopic, which also stars Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Paresh Rawal and Manisha Koirala in prominent roles, sees Kapoor sport six different looks as he traces Dutt’s journey from a 22-year-old debutant in Rocky (1981) to his release from jail in 2016. Talking about the physical transformation that he had to undergo for different portions of the movie, Kapoor said, “The shooting of the film was spaced out, so we had enough time to prepare. After every segment, I almost had a month to prepare for the next avatar. So, in that sense, it wasn’t difficult at all.”

Mid-day says: Sanju teaser a stunner
“Apna life full saap seedi ka board hai — kabhi up toh kabhi down,” says Ranbir Kapoor right at the onset of Sanju teaser. No whitewashing or glorifying here; if the teaser is any indication, for Sanju, director Rajkumar Hirani goes back to what he does best — say life’s simple truths with a pinch of comedy. While Abhijat Joshi and Hirani’s sharp scripts may have been the star of their previous outings, the sole star of the biopic is Kapoor. He slips into the character effortlessly — from being the burly-framed, long-haired Dutt of the early ’90s who lives life with abandon, to the slightly hunched 58-year-old incarcerated actor who has learnt life lessons the hard way. With Sanju, Kapoor may get that elusive hit. But more importantly, Dutt may get the perfect comeback film, even without featuring in it.
