Kangana-pinkActress Kangana Ranaut, who never minces words, has opposed the threats issued to “Padmavati” actress Deepika Padukone, and said patriarchy in the society needs to be attacked. Kangana was at Reebok’s Fit To Fight Awards here on Thursday night when she was asked about her thoughts on the threats issued to Deepika over the controversial film “Padmavati”.

She said: “It is absolutely wrong, but I feel it is not something which is very surprising. When my sister was in school, she faced an acid attack from a student and now when I am in a professional environment, a superstar is trying to put me behind bars. So, this is very common that happens in our society. “I feel we should not attack individuals, we should attack patriarchy and chauvinism. For individuals, we can call them out and say whatever you are doing is not right.”

“But I feel this is not restricted only to boys, it implies to girls as well, so we have to attack that view point and we are doing it whether with our work, speech or films. And that is why I feel films are an important medium, because we as an industry can reach out to people only through our films.” Kangana is next working on “Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi”.

Reacting to comparisons between her look for the movie and Deepika’s get-up in Padmavati”, Kangana said: “Our film is a different film. It’s a film about a warrior queen who fought against British empire. I feel we should feel ashamed that we didn’t make any film earlier based on her life. “I think we should honour real heroes like Rani Lakshmibai, which we are doing through our film. In future as well, we will make an effort in that direction and all we need is support from the media.” Kangana’s “Manikarnika – The Queen of Jhansi”, directed by Krish, is scheduled to release in April 2018.

Deepika-VishalShooting for Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan starrer has been deferred amidst concerns surrounding Padmavati’s release. mid-day has learnt that the cast and crew has been asked to reschedule the dates that they had allotted for the January 2018 shooting leg. Sources say Padukone is “emotionally affected” by the political climate that has led to her receiving death threats.

Bhardwaj’s publicist confirms that his production, which is being helmed by Honey Trehan, will now kick-off in March. A source tells mid-day, “Deepika wishes to take a break before returning to the set. She wants to be mentally prepared for the film.” Further, a fair share of time will also be spent on training Padukone to wield and shoot a gun, the source adds. “To add to the delay, Bhardwaj has decided to revisit the script. He wants to ensure that he has everything in place before they roll.” Bhardwaj’s publicist however suggests that the film will roll as previously planned. “We never announced a date,” she argues.

padmaThe Bombay high court on Thursday asked where the country was headed while alluding to “open threats” made to stall the release of the film Padmavati+ and the announcement of a reward to “kill” its lead actress Deepika Padukone.

“In which other country do you see threats made to artistes and performers? It is distressing to know a person makes a feature film and several others work tirelessly towards it but are unable to release the film for public viewing because of continuous threats… A feature film cannot be released in this country. What have we come to?” asked a bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and Bharati Dangre.

While pointing out that threats are being issued openly and shown on television, the judges said people are taking pride in announcing rewards for killing artistes and performers. “Today somebody says, ‘I will give a reward if you get a performer, artiste, actress killed’… Even chief ministers are saying they will not allow release of the film in their states,” said Justice Dharmadhikari, adding, “This is censorship of a different kind. If this is happening to people with financial strength and backing, what about poor people?”

The court’s remarks were made while it rapped CBI and state CID for their failure to trace the absconding killers of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare despite being given time to crack the cases. “The crime is committed in 2013 (Dhabolkar) and 2015 (Pansare) and you are still finding them (the killers)?” asked Justice Dharmadhikari. The court is hearing pleas by their families to monitor investigations into the murders.

“In other parts of the world, a truck with weapons drives into people. In less than 24 hours, the person is caught dead or alive, identified, a role is attributed and the whole country is alerted. They take it as an affront to the nation. We have not learned anything from the attack on the Parliament and on a prime minister,” the judge added. PM Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984.

While Anil Singh, additional solicitor general for CBI, said “sincere efforts are being made”, senior advocate Ashok Mundargi for the state CID assured the court that the probe was on the right track. “We have not made success but have not given up,” Mundargi added.

The judges, though, said they would not allow the matter to linger for years. “In this country, do you want a situation where people cannot voice their opinion? We can’t allow constitutional rights to be taken away like this. Every time a person says he or she wants to voice their opinion, somebody says ‘I won’t allow it’,” said Justice Dharmadhikari. The judges questioned whether any senior officer of the agencies had bothered to find out why the probe has made no headway and if it is being scuttled.

The judges said those who “openly and boldly” voice their opinion are being targeted by “people who won’t like their opinion” and threatened with elimination by fringe groups. “That is what is disturbing us. We have been noticing that at the core of all these crimes is the bold attempt being made by fringe groups to attack those who voice their rational thoughts, feelings and expressions,” they added.

The court said the country cuts a “sorry figure” with bold threats and attacks on people voicing their opinion. “We cannot take pride in being the largest democracy in the world when we are repeatedly confronted with incidents and happenings day in and day out,” said Justice Dharmadhikari.

The judges said it is time superiors of both agencies “guiding and directing the investigation should take the lead and take stock of the situation”. Assured by Singh and Mundargi that a meeting would be convened with the secretary (home), DGP, and joint director, CBI , the court deferred summoning them and posted the hearing on December 21 for an update.

Virat-Anushka-flatOver the past few days, Bollywood and the cricket world have been abuzz with rumours of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli tying the knot in Italy this month. In the latest development that borders on confirmation of their wedding plans, mid-day has learnt that select residents of Badrinath Tower at Versova, the highrise where the actor resides, have received invites for the nuptials. We hear the star’s father, Ajay Kumar Sharma, has been personally calling up the star’s neighbours and extending invitations.

A source reveals, “The star dad has made calls to some building folks, inviting them to the wedding that is slated for next week. As everyone cannot travel to Italy, he was keen to make them aware of the developments and seek blessings for the couple.” The source adds that the neighbours have been requested to keep things hush-hush considering the media attention surrounding the impending marriage.

Speculation about the couple solemnising their relationship arose when Kohli, in October, bowed out of the ODI series with Sri Lanka scheduled for December, citing personal reasons. The stories gained credence last week when Sabyasachi Mukherjee was spotted exiting Sharma’s house, sparking rumours that he is designing her bridal trousseau. Eyebrows were raised when Kohli’s childhood cricket coach Rajkumar Sharma too reportedly applied for leave this month.

As is with most celebrity weddings, there has been no dearth of contradictory stories — with some stating that a popular Juhu five-star has been booked for a three-day affair and others alleging that the couple will have a court wedding in the city on December 12 or 18.

However, sources close to the star insist Italy is the destination of choice for the couple. Call it coincidence, but interestingly, Sharma’s mentor Aditya Chopra tied the knot with Rani Mukerji in a hush-hush ceremony in Italy as well.

saif-ali-khanSaif Ali Khan’s latest outing ‘Kaalakaandi’ has been the talk of the town ever since its inception. The actor, on Wednesday, launched the film’s first trailer that has been creating all the right kind of buzz. At the launch event, the actor expressed his delight over the current showbiz scenario. Talking about the possibility of his film clashing with the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’, Saif said, “If ‘Padmavati’ comes in (on 12th January), we will think of shifting our release date. I hope we don’t have to do that. ‘Kaalakaandi’ is a film I am proud of.”

While admitting that it is good to see films release alongside each other and do good business, he said that filmmakers are wary about it and take it into consideration. “It would have been nice to see Kaalakaandi releasing with Padmavati, as it shows that we have a film industry which makes a different kind of movies. Personally, I feel it’s good time to have films releasing alongside one another. But filmmakers are wary about it and you need to take that into consideration,” He said.

padmaStating that a tourism-oriented state like Goa cannot afford law and order problems, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday said he will “look into” the demand of the BJP state women’s wing to ban the screening of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Padmavati’.

Parrikar was speaking to reporters in Panaji after a delegation of the Goa Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Mahila Morcha led by its president Sulakshana Sawant met him at his official residence to demand a ban on the film’s screening in Goa.

The delegation also claimed that it was portraying distorted history. “The other issue about this controversy is a law and order problem, which Goa can’t afford in the tourist season. A touristic state has to be peaceful. So we will look into both aspects of it.”

“As of now, the censor board’s certificate is not granted, so will take a call after it is granted…whether they take into consideration all these aspects and edit the film accordingly,” Parrikar told reporters after accepting the memorandum submitted by Sawant.

The Chief Minister also said the issues raised by the delegation, including wrong portrayal of queen ‘Padmavati’, was also justifiable. “This is the country’s history, where we believe that she committed ‘johar’ to protect herself. Anyway I will not go into what is there actually in the film. That is for the censor board to look into,” he said, complementing the Morcha’s members for raising a “right issue”.

“My personal opinion is straight that history should be portrayed correctly. If history is portrayed in a wrong way, then people’s sentiments might be hurt,” Parrikar said. In their memorandum, the Morcha’s members said the film “distorts history” and “wrongly links adored queen Padmavati with Muslim ruler Allaudin Khilji, who was an “aggressor”.

“It has been a habit of filmmakers to distort Hindi(u) icons and traditions in the guise of creativity. History has depicted ‘Padmavati’ as having committed johar to escape dishonour. Large sections of the Indian people adore queen Padmavati for her valour and chivalry,” the memorandum read. “The release of the controversial film is likely to hurt the sentiments of a large section of society creating unrest in peaceful Goa. The sentiments of women have also been hurt by the wrongful portrayal of queen Padmavati in poor light and association with Khilji is unacceptable,” it added.

Sharmila-Tagore“His death has still not sunk in,” says Sharmila Tagore on the demise of her “Aa Gale Lag Jaa” and “My Love” co-star Shashi Kapoor, whom she describes as the “most handsome man” she had ever seen.

“I don’t think I enjoyed working with any co-star as much as I did with Shashi Kapoor… His death has still not sunk in. Even as I’ve been busy with various things during the past few days, my mind has been going back to all the wonderful times I shared with Shashi,” Sharmila said.

The actress recounted her special bond with Shashi, who died on Monday. He was 79.

“While I shared only a professional rapport with my other co-stars, with Shashi I also socialized. We did meet over dinner and drinks. And it was always a pleasure to meet Shashi and his really wonderful wife Jennifer.

“They complemented each other perfectly. Seeing Shashi and Jennifer together was so gratifying. I don’t think Shashi ever got over her death. It broke him and turned him reckless about his life. He became suicidal. It was sad to see him let himself go… I still remember how handsome he was. My God! He was the most handsome man I had seen.”
Her first meeting with Shashi was when he visited the location of her first Hindi film “Kashmir Ki Kali”.
“We were shooting the song ‘Isharon isharon mein’ with Shashi’s brother Shammi. I couldn’t concentrate on my romantic poses with Shammi.

“The director Shakti Samanta had to ask Shashi to leave. The funny thing was, before I could confess I was a fan, Shashi started telling me he was a fan of my work, having seen me in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Apur Sansar’. That charm completely won women over,” she said.

Sharmila said she counted Shashi among her close friends.

“We got a lot of opportunity to work and spend time together as most of our films were shot outside Mumbai over a lengthy period of time. I remember we were all together for ‘My Love’ in Nairobi. Likewise, my other films with Shashi which were shot in places as far-flung as Rajasthan and Canada.

“I remember we were shooting ‘Paap Aur Punya’ in Rajasthan. Shashi’s children and my son Saif were all there. Saif, who was very small, became very fond of his Shashi uncle. In a sequence where Shashi was being hung by a noose by the villain, Saif, unknown to the camera and crew, toddled up to the villain and bit him for hurting his favourite Shashi uncle.”

She says his charms worked with the young and old alike.

“We did a lot of films together, some of them like ‘New Delhi Times’, ‘Aamne Samne’ and ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’ were good, some really awful. Not too many of them worked at the box office, which is a pity, because among all my co-stars, it’s Shashi I enjoyed working with the most.”

DF1_ShaTill 2013, Shahid Kapoor was taken as a chocolate boy hero but, he soon changed the game by doing films like Haider, Udta Punjab and Rangoon. And now the actor is no more known as only chocolate boy hero. Now, he is known as one of the serious and dedicated actors in Bollywood.

In an interview with a leading tabloid, the actor shared his experience of filming swordfight sequences. He said, “Sword fighting is a very defined skill… We’ve done it in a very raw manner. As raw as it could get. I lost four kilos in five days.”

He went on to add, “I don’t find physical challenges as challenging as I find understating the psyche of the character that you are meant to play and be true to him and be able to find all the layers in him.”
However, currently, the film is on hold due to controversies and CBFC fiasco and the makers are yet to give a final date for the release.
