Deepika was in New Delhi along with her mother and younger sister to launch a report on Public Perception Towards Mental Health in India by her foundation The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF)

Deepika Padukone

As multiple Bollywood films are celebrating how weaknesses can be turned into strengths, leading actress Deepika Padukone says it is important for celebrities to use their place of influence and power to bring about change in society. “I think it is extremely important for those who are in positions of influence or power to bring about social change. It is extremely important for them to speak up about whatever issue it might be,” Deepika told IANS in an interview.

Of late, film actors and filmmakers are attempting storylines which have a strong underlying message that can bring change in society. The latest example is Rani Mukerji’s “Hichki”, which talks about how a woman with Tourette Syndrome, a neuropsychiatric disorder, makes it her strength and becomes a teacher.

Deepika Padukone, one of Bollywood’s top-earning actresses, believes people can see if you do not have genuine connect or if it is not authentic. “For many years, people always said, ‘You know you are successful, you should do work in social sectors as well or associate with an NGO’. There were so many options (for me), but I didn’t feel like I was being honest to them.

“It didn’t come naturally to me until I came across mental health, also because of my personal experience,” said the actress, who had earlier opened up about her battle with depression. She feels speaking up for a cause has to be an “organic” process. “I don’t think there is any fixed time as to when one should do it. I think you should do it when you feel it is right.”

Deepika was in New Delhi along with her mother and younger sister to launch a report on Public Perception Towards Mental Health in India by her foundation The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF), which aims to reduce the stigma around mental health. The report’s findings indicate that a majority of people feel that mental illness is still considered a severe disorder like schizophrenia and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. But are celebrities not more prone to depression and stress, especially when they are constantly under the scanner, more so with the emergence of social media?

“No. I think I have understood the correlation between consumption of social media and when it helps. I always believed that whatever you consume, you consume in moderation. If you consume too much, it could have various sorts of impact, not just on your mental health but physical health too. I know people who are up at social media in the wee hours and probably letting it eat up their sleep time. As long as anything that you consume, whether it is social media or otherwise, is done in moderation, and you are aware about your social health, I think you are on the right path,” said the 32-year-old.

At the end of the day, the only thing that matters to her is “peace of mind”. Deepika said she wants to see India as the happiest nation in the world. “My vision for the Foundation is that we become the happiest country in the world. I see Bhutan having their happiness minister, and even some of the Scandinavian countries have the highest rate of mental happiness and I want India to be there, sooner or later,” she signed off.

All of us have developed an excellent rapport with each other which is sure to translate on screen as well.”

Entertainment Ki Raat@9 is slated to launch soon.

Indian-origin Canadian YouTube sensation, comedian and author Lilly Singh, also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, says people owe all children the chance to go to school. Lilly’s new campaign, which released on YouTube in India on Friday, gives viewers access to an exclusive YouTube playlist curated by Lilly to help engage and educate viewers about the impact of girls’ education. This new playlist spotlights organisations focused on girls education in India, and points viewers to a website where they can learn more about the cause and donate directly to Unicef India.

“When I visited Madhya Pradesh, district Harda in India last summer on my first Unicef field visit, I saw firsthand how access to education changed the outlooks for children and their families. We owe all children the chance to go to school,” Lilly said in a statement.

“When I returned home, I committed to help champion their cause on my own and with every resource available to me. I’m honoured to work with Unicef and grateful to YouTube for partnering with me to advocate for children’s access to education and to spread awareness about why it’s essential for local communities, India and the world,” she added.

Julia Paige, Director, YouTube Impact Lab, said, “We are absolutely thrilled to be supporting Lilly in her work to champion girls’ education in India.”

Daisy Irani said she was molested by an uncle during the shooting of Hum Panchhi Ek Dal Ke in 1957 in what was then called Madras

Daisy Irani, who featured in a string of Bollywood films as a child star, has opened up about being molested by her guardian when she was six years old. Irani said she was molested by an uncle during the shooting of “Hum Panchhi Ek Dal Ke” in 1957 in what was then called Madras. “Somebody asked me about the children (in showbiz) and I spoke about the incident. All I remember is that the man who accompanied me for the film shoot called me to the hotel room and later warned me against speaking about it,” she said.

In an earlier interview, Irani, who featured in films such as Dhool Ka Phool, Ek Hi Raasta and Naya Daur, had revealed that she was pushed into films by an ambitious mother. Her sister Honey Irani was also in films as a child artiste. “I was too young. What can you do? You are in a man’s world,” Irani told PTI. Irani, who is now in her 60s, said she was aghast recently when someone suggested that children should speak out if something like this happens. “…I was like have you lost it? Where and who to talk to about it? They (kids) know parents want this work, they are behind them,” she added. When asked whether she meant parents forced children to get into films or TV, she shot back, saying, “Of course, yes.”

“I had no idea when I was working with stalwarts like Ashok Kumar and all, I did not know who they were (sic). It was later when I grew up that I realised that they all were such huge actors. “You can’t say it is the mistake of the children. What is their mistake? When we were told you don’t have to go to school and do homework…we were happy we did not have to do our lessons, we did not know what we were missing out on.” Irani, however, believes women stars are smarter now. “Today, most actresses are very sharp and that is good, I am proud of these girls. Kajol is very courageous, she speaks her mind.” The actor also believes that more educated people are a part of the industry so there is more awareness. Irani made her last appearance on the silver screen in Shah Rukh Khan starrer “Happy New Year”.

“I have retired from films and I don’t want to do anything. My children are looking after me and that is a blessing,” she added. Her nephew Farhan, sister Honey’s son, who is vocal about gender equality said he was “heartbroken” to learn about what his aunt went through as a child. “Heartbroken upon reading this article but proud that my aunt #DaisyIrani spoke up. It’s tragic to see parents push their kids to breaking point in order to achieve success vicariously through them. This should serve as wake up call for the film & TV industry. Be aware. Be warned,” he tweeted.

Neha Sharma is one actress, who has stayed away from the big screens for quite some time but is quite active on social media with her fans. The gorgeous beauty shared a photo of her dressed in a sleeveless black pantsuit. Little did she know that social media would start educating her about moral policing. She received flaks for posting those sultry pictures.

With minimal make-up, nude lip shade and tresses let loose, Neha Sharma looked breathtakingly beautiful. She looked stunning in the seductive avatar. However, the trolls weren’t there to spare her. From blaming her to be this is a publicity stunt to dragging her parents in between for nurturing these qualities in her and endless criticism, the girl was bombarded with all such comments.

Lack of work opportunities is one of the reasons why Neha has switched to posting such photos, said one of the users. “Jb movies nhy milti to yhy sab krna pdta good keep it going better to take off those clothes too,” one user wrote, adding: “Once upon a time u were my favorite when I watched crook movie but now u r doing irrational things which is not look good on you like u r starving to get a movie (sic),” read the comment.

Neha was seen in the movie Crook with Emraan Hashmi. The actress has also worked in films like Mubarakan, Tum Bin 2 amongst others. However, she is yet to make a mark in the audiences’ hearts.

srk-rani-amir-salmanSalman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan might have not done a film together yet, but they have come forward to promote Rani Mukerji’s Hichki that releases today. All 3 Khans – the biggest names of India’s entertainment industry – are promoting their dear friend Rani’s forthcoming film and wishing her well.

The makers of Rani Mukerji’s Hichki are promoting the film uniquely by asking prominent personalities to share their untold weaknesses and how they eventually converted them into massive strengths. The 3 Khans have come together to share the journey that has made them inspiring success stories for generations.

Aamir Khan, who defines superstardom with excellence, revealed that the major hichki in his life is his obsessive personality! The actor confessed, “My biggest Hichki is my obsessive personality. I get obsessed with anything that I do. I am still dealing with this Hichki and my struggle to overcome it continues.” He has applauded Yash Raj Films and Rani Mukerji for taking up the challenge of making a film around a person who deals with Tourette Syndrome. He further adds, “Hopefully when I see the film, I will be able to address my Hichki, and improve myself.”

Salman Khan opened about how he took his work casually. He revealed, “I used to have a Hichki. I used to take my work very casually. Now, that has changed as I take my work with seriousness and sincerity now. Because, now I have realised that nothing is better than work. Kaam se behtar kuch nahi hain. I guess all of you should also take your work seriously and appreciate every day that you are working.”

Shah Rukh Khan is living legend today. The outsider, the path-breaker, the icon – Hindi cinema hasn’t seen a Badshah rule with such unparalleled love and success. Yet, early on in his life, Shah Rukh faced the biggest hiccup one could face – the sudden loss of his parents.

He revealed, “My greatest Hichki moment is the death of my parents. I was 15 when my father passed away and 26 when my mother passed away. We were not financially well off, and I was studying for my Masters degree then. It was very sad for us. The empty house without my parents used to come to bite us (my sister and me). The loneliness, pain and sadness of the loss of both my parents, could have been overwhelming enough to take over my life wholly. I decided to overcome this Hichki moment by letting acting fill up my entire life.”

Rani adds “Through Hichki, we have tried to bring to focus important social messages like winning over discrimination and not letting one’s weakness walk all over their dreams, their ambitions. It is extremely overwhelming to see all my dear friends and colleagues come forward to reveal how they overcame their weaknesses and inspire millions of people with their stories. I’m grateful to each one of them for their courage to speak openly about their struggles and victories.”

Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Maneesh Sharma, Hichki is set to touch the hearts of audiences as it releases today.

Seemingly, the photo was taken when Priyanka was just a few months old. Well, the actress is completely unrecognisable as a toddler.

“Major throwback. Mommy daddy and baby me.. I’d never seen this picture until now. The sketch behind us was made by my dad. Besides being a surgeon he was an extremely creative man. Digging the ‘stache dad,” this is what Priyanka Chopra wrote.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Chopra is currently in Mumbai and will begin work on her upcoming film, based on the life of astronaut Kalpana Chawla in the next month. Co-incidently, Shah Rukh Khan too will start prepping for Rakesh Sharma biopic. When original choice Aamir Khan was on board for the Sharma biopic, there was talk that PeeCee would play his wife. We hope the two space sagas do not collide at the box office as well.

RanbirWith the maiden schedule of Brahmastra wrapping up tomorrow, Ranbir Kapoor is gearing up to get into action mode. We hear the actor, over the next four weeks, will train in various Indian martial art forms, including Kalaripayattu and Huyen Langlon, for his superhero act in the Ayan Mukerji-directed film.

A source from the film’s team reveals that both Kapoor and his co-star Alia Bhatt are expected to return from Bulgaria by the weekend. While Bhatt will dive headlong into Gully Boy, Kapoor will begin his prep for the June schedule of the fantasy film. “Ranbir will train in Kalaripayattu and Varma Kalai. He is required to have the physique of a gymnast for the film, and these martial art forms will help him achieve that,” says the source.

Besides attaining a lean physique, Ranbir Kapoor will also have to pick up fight techniques for the action sequences of the Karan Johar production Brahmastra. Kapoor will require a ground training in Huyen Langlon, a popular form of martial art from Manipur that involves both armed and unarmed fighting.

A trainer in the know informs, “He only needs to pick up combat training tricks. He will be spending time in developing each skill required for the film’s action sequences. We will focus on Phunaba Anishuba [the unarmed style of combat under Huyen langlon]. Though a month is a short span of time, his team of trainers will take him through the basics of each form.”
