Ileana D'cruzIleana D’cruz

Ileana D’cruz may be doing only a handful films, but that’s the way she likes it. After being part of the South industry, she made her Bollywood debut with Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi’ (2012) followed by ‘Phata Poster Niklla Hero’ (2013), ‘Main Tera Hero’ and ‘Happy Ending’ (both 2014), ‘Rustom’ (2016) and recently ‘Mubarakan’. We catch up with her at a production house’s office, where she’s promoting her next, ‘Baadshaho’.

You are playing a badass character in ‘Baadshaho’.
I love the fact that I am doing something which I wanted to for a long time. I was surprised when Milan [director, Luthria] offered me the role. As it is a central character, I am aware that it comes with a certain responsibility, so I had to contain my excitement. I irritated the hell out of the director by asking him to start the film as soon as possible. It was an emotional journey for me — from being excited to breaking down on the last day. I cried like crazy when Milan announced on the speakers, ‘That was Ileana’s last shot.’ These are the kind of roles that are liberating and I hope our hard work pays off.

You’ve done six films and have always played the leading lady. Is that a conscious decision?
Yes. There have been lots of films which were offered to me that had great scripts, but I said no to them. I don’t want to be part of a film, where I have nothing to do. I am a selfish actor. I want to have a stellar role in a successful film. I would never settle for anything less. I compete with myself and push myself to breaking point to get what I want.

Most of your films have been an ensemble cast. Does it ever get to a point where you question your screen time?
Like I said, I’d do a film only if my character adds value to it. My intuition plays a strong part in selecting the films. I took a long time to say yes to Barfi because there was Ranbir [Kapoor] and Priyanka [Chopra] in the film so why would someone look at me? At the end of the film, I wasn’t even getting the guy [laughs]. All the films that I have done are because of the strong intuition.

You are a private person and avoid media glare.
I like to disconnect when I am not shooting and I am selective about the people I want to spend time with. I can’t make small talk. If I am at a party, I should know someone or else I drag a person along. Otherwise, I’d be awkward standing in a corner looking like a fool. I can’t sugar-coat and praise people for the sake of it. It’s not that I don’t love to socialise, but not as often as other people would do.

Would you ever open up about your relationship with Australian beau Andrew Kneebone?
I doubt that will ever happen. I’ve been working in the industry for 11 years. It’s taken me a lot to understand the working culture. We actors get a lot of love, but at times, we get double the amount of negativity for no reason whatsoever. There are times when the comments become nasty. It’s not fair for him to go through it. He is a normal person and is entitled to his privacy. I have had people coming and telling me that he is not an Indian and I find it stupid. He is someone who has been special to me and I don’t want to be in a situation where my family is targetted for no fault of theirs.

Do you discuss these issues?
Initially, we did because there are a lot of Hindi phrases and words that he doesn’t understand [laughs]. But we tend to ignore it most of the time. For us, the most important part has been accepting each other. There was a time when I had to explain to him that people will speak rubbish, but you and I know each other and that’s what matters. I feel it all boils down to commitment.

Does he give you a feedback or opinion on your films?
Yes sometimes. But we are clear that this is my line of work and he has his own, which is photography. We don’t interfere in each other’s professional front. In fact, my family gives me a lot of feedback. I do not like to be told what to do, but in the end I take my own decisions.

Do you plan to get hitched anytime soon?
I think marriage and live-in relationship aren’t really different. It is just a piece of paper that separates the two. Marriage is great for a lot of people. It changes a lot of things between two people, but I don’t look at it in that way. My commitment towards him is not going to change.

Have you ever thought about the fact that married actresses don’t get work?
It is an accepted norm that this is the way the industry functions. I can either accept it and move on. Or choose to fight it for the rest of my life. I’d choose the first option. We have had many instances of actresses, who have been super talented, but they didn’t get offers as after marriage, which is unfair. I am happy with the work that I have got so far. Personally and professionally, I am in a great space. There are no complaints.

Riya Sen and beau Shivam Tewari

We can’t help but notice the timing of Riya Sen’s ex flame Ashmit Patel’s announcement that he had popped the question to girlfriend Maheck Chahal. It came a day after Riya tied the knot with beau Shivam Tewari.

Riya’s wedding in Pune was a private affair attended by family and close pals. Ashmit has reportedly said that he went down on his knees while holidaying in Spain with Maheck.

Almost a decade ago, a controversial MMS featuring Ashmit and Riya had gone viral. Though Riya had denied that the woman in the clip was her, Ashmit had confessed on TV it was Riya.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one of the most critically acclaimed actors working today. His work ethic and talent truly elevate his performances. He is so good that even when he shares the silver screen with bigger actors, you tend to pay more attention to him than anyone else. Yeah, that’s how natural he is.

And now there are rumours floating around that we might soon see him playing Telangana’s Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao. That’s cool, isn’t it? Well, we can’t think of anyone who could portray his character as well as Nawaz can.

Last year, filmmaker Madhura Sreeghar officially announced that he would be producing a biopic on KCR. And the pre-production work was already going on in the background. Then there was speculation that Rajkummar Roa might be seen donning this role, however, latest reports squashed that rumour.

According to TOI, Nawaz might be seen filling the shoes of the Telangana CM. “The makers are considering three actors at this point and Nawazuddin tops their list because of his uncanny facial resemblance to KCR and acting prowess, of course. They want to be fully prepared with the script and other modalities before they formally approach him. However, Nawaz is already aware of the makers’ interest in casting him and he has started watching KCR’s videos to pick up his mannerisms,” a source close to the unit revealed.

Nawazuddin was in Hyderabad promoting his upcoming film ‘Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’ which is already being talked about as one of the hits of the year. The actor also went and visited the CM’s camp office as well.

When asked about working on the film, Nawazuddin Siddiqui said, “As of now, I have no information regarding it. Great films are made in the South, and if I am offered a good script, I will definitely lap it up.”

The film is said to showcase a different side of KCR’s life that many are not aware of. The script is already done and the shoot will start as soon as the cast is finalised.

Aamir KhanAamir Khan

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, whose production house is coming up with “Secret Superstar”, says the film has a lot of “secret” superstars.

“Secret Superstar” is a story of a girl who dreams big to be a singer, but is held by the pressure of her family, therefore, secretly reaches her audience on social media. The role of the aspiring singer Insu has been played by Zaira Wasim, who earlier was seen alongside Aamir in “Dangal”.

The film has been helmed by debut director Advait Chandan.

“I would like to say Kiran and I feel we are so fortunate that such talented people have come to us with material that we have loved and it’s great for us to be able to make films, introduce films, give opportunity to creative talent like Advait,” Aamir said in a statement.

“‘Secret Superstar’ as the title in the film refers to Zaira and of course, Zaira is a huge star but it’s no longer a secret. She was a secret superstar until ‘Dangal’ had released. But I must tell you that ‘Secret Superstar’ has got many secret superstars in it.

“Slowly one by one we will be revealing each one of the superstars as we go along this journey and Advait is certainly one of them. When you see the film you’ll realise what a beautiful story he has written and how well he had made the film,” he added.

Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Zee Studios, and Akash Chawla, “Secret Superstar” is slated to release this Diwali.

Hindi films now portraying women in a progressive way: KareenaKareena believes a modern Indian woman plays diverse roles in her life and she considers herself to be one

Kareena Kapoor Khan says she is proud and happy that Bollywood filmmakers are now showing women in a progressive way in movies. The actor attributes this change to the influx of young writers in films. In an interview to PTI, Kareena says, “One can definitely see a change in the way women have been portrayed on screen in the Hindi film industry.

“The roles are now written by young directors, who have been successful in highlighting the personality of women who are hardworking and successful. Films have now been portraying women in a more progressive manner.” The 36-year-old actor, who was last seen in “Udta Punjab”, welcomed her first child, Taimur Ali Khan, in December last year. Talking about balancing her work and motherhood, the actor says, “I have always maintained a personal and professional life but now it’s more difficult as Taimur is too young. I try to strike a balance. I have a great support system with (husband) Saif and my family.”

Kareena believes a modern Indian woman plays diverse roles in her life and she considers herself to be one. “She is a multifaceted woman, lives her life to the
fullest and fulfils her choices with confidence and style. I am proud to be a married, independent and working woman. I carry that with great honour and pride. Despite being married, I work and have my own identity.” Kareena is all charged up to begin work on her next project “Veere Di Wedding” alongside Sonam Kapoor and Swara Bhaskar.

However, she did not comment on the reports of her signing a biopic by Omung Kumar, another movie with Salman Khan and Karan Johar’s next. Meanwhile, the “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” star is the muse of designer Anita Dongre’s autumn winter campaign #IamAND, which celebrates the multifaceted personality of the modern Indian woman.

“AND is one brand that has changed the fashion scenario in the country. With its new campaign, the brand conveys a very strong message of celebrating the multifaceted personality of the modern Indian woman, which I truly identify with,” says Kareena.

We totally love dragons! We really do. Every time one appears onscreen in ‘Game of Thrones’, setting people on fire, it gives us a warm feeling inside. Daenerys’s dragons are fierce, but let’s not stereotype them, because they are not the only dragons around in the world of film and TV!

Even the word ‘Dragon’ invokes and sense of ‘power and fear’! Insert a fire-breathing behemoth or a sage-eyed, scaly guardian into a movie or television series, and you just know you are bound to watch it.

Across generations and cultures, dragons have always appealed to people of all ages and why wouldn’t they? They are magical, mythical, spellbinding creatures who can sometimes even talk in our language and communicate with us. Not all dragons are born with Dany’s temperament; they can be naughty, protective or even shy. The heap of movies with cool dragons across various decades supports this fact.

With Daenerys’ dragons stealing the show in the latest episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7, we thought this would be the perfect time to examine the many ways in which Dragons have been portrayed in cinema.

Shy: Elliot – Pete’s Dragon

Pete's Dragon(c) Twitter

Would you believe that dragons can also be shy? That sounds crazy, right? Who would ever believe that a monster of that size, that wipe out the greatest of warriors, could ever be shy? Well, meet Elliot from the blockbuster film, ‘Pete’s Dragon’. He is a friend to Pete, an orphaned child who looks up to him for advice and friendship. He is shy around new people and rarely confronts people he doesn’t trust. Don’t believe us? Then watch Elliot and Pete’s camaraderie in the film ‘Pete’s Dragon’ and experience a new side of these awesome beasts.

Fierce: Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion – Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones(c) Giphy

When the ‘Mother of Dragons’ calls for her children – Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion, no army in the world can stop the awesome threesome. The sheer size and fire-breathing capabilities make these dragons a force to be reckoned with. The way Drogon, the oldest of the three, wiped out the Lannister army in the latest ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 episode, truly showcases the sheer terror these dragons would fill in the hearts and minds of its enemies.

Clumsy: Toothless – How To Train Your Dragon

How-to-Train-Your-Dragon-(c) Twitter

Now, a Dragon being clumsy can be a real problem. Their sheer size coupled with scales of steel and lungs full of fire can often be a curse instead of being a boon. One such Dragon, Toothless, who stars in the blockbuster movie – ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ is exactly that. He’s lovable and loyal but he’s also like a big, big dog who doesn’t know his size and strength.

Naughty: Dragon – Shrek

Shrek Dragon(c) Giphy

Few movies portray dragons as female creatures. And Shrek featured a very different version of a dragon that was pink and had strange eyelashes. Sounds like one hell of a dragon! And that’s not it; the film also showed her falling for a talking donkey! Interesting, ain’t it? In the later instalments, the dragon plays an integral part in the story. Her antics in the movie and over-protectiveness towards Donkey were the highlights of the film.

Evil: Smaug – Lord of the Rings – Desolation of Smaug

LOTR Smaug(c) Ghiphy

No other dragon symbolizes evil as well as Smaug from the Hobbit trilogy. The Dragon’s lust for gold and vengeance was so accurately portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch that we were totally mesmerised. Smaug’s golden eyes, a voice that could scare the hell out of anyone and a terrifying demeanour makes him one of the coolest dragons in film.

Huma Qureshi is known to keep her distance from the media. Perhaps to avoid some unwanted, sticky questions.

So it came as a surprise to see her personally call media folk for the screening of Partition: 1947. When a film is releasing, stars do anything and everything.

Almost a month after its release, director Madhur Bhandarkar has not given up on Indu Sarkar. He is still hosting special screenings, which are usually held prior to a film’s release.

Yesterday, he was in New Delhi for a show held for political bigwigs. Several Turkman Gate victims, who were a witness to the massive slum demolition drive that took place in 1975 during the Emergency, also attended the screening.

Karan Johar and Simi GarewalKaran Johar and Simi Garewal

Veteran actress and celebrity talk show host Simi Garewal and Karan Johar attended the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne recently. After hosting the awards event, Garewal was told that KJo was keen to anchor the show.

This didn’t go down well with her. She took to Twitter and wrote, “After I finished hosting IFFM Awards @karanjohar told festival director, ‘Next year I want to host the awards.’ Another takeover?” KJo’s chat show, Koffee with Karan, took over from Rendezvous With Simi Garewal.

It appears that the veteran host is still bitter about the filmmaker ruling the chat show scene on the same channel her show used to air years ago. Garewal has been retweeting comments by her followers on social media, who have been praising her and saying that Johar is more keen on hosting than filmmaking.

Gordon Ramsay participating in an epic cook-off is nothing out of the ordinary, but this particular episode was a little different, and very hilarious. Instead of facing off another professional chef, Ramsay went head-to-head with his friend, and ‘the second most competitive Brit on the planet’ David Beckham.

For this week’s episode of Gordon Ramsay’s show ‘The F Word’, he invited Beckham to his kitchen and both of them competed to see who could make the best risotto, and the competition was fierce, as you would expect from two people who are at the top of their respective fields.

As soon as they began cooking, the two best friends started trolling each other continuously to throw the other one off, all in good fun, obviously. Beckham took at dig at Gordon saying “He’s not a chef anymore, he’s a TV host.”

Ramsay just couldn’t stop asking questions, which made an exasperated Beckham ask, “Are we going to talk all the way through this?” To that, Ramsay responded, “The idea is to talk as much as I can to put you off, hoping that your slip up, burn something, and I sneak in from behind and win.”

Gordon further tried to irritate his friend by chopping really loudly, which made Beckham take a blow at him saying that his wife Victoria Beckham complained that the fish Gordon prepared for her last week was undercooked. The competition is heating up and these guys are not messing around.

Beckham even brought out the big guns and made a fancy pea puree. In the end, both dishes looked really good, but Beckham’s asparagus and corn risotto looked a tad bit more appetizing than Ramsay’s creamy crab risotto. But that’s just going by the look of it.

For the final taste test, both of the dishes were presented to Muhammad Ali’s daughter and former professional boxer Laila Ali. Praising both of the risottos, she ended up declaring Ramsay’s dish as the winner. After all, he is the professional chef, obviously he won. But the most surprising part of the whole video was when he didn’t drop a single f-bomb.

Sorry, Becks.
